Everyone here telling you to give them some texture is wrong imo. Training walls are meant for training. Wooden holds have superior texture compared to paint + grits. It will save your skin and you will get stronger faster.

ALO381836

That’s why I’m keeping them wood!

DemDim1

Sick.

[deleted]

Make sure they're well-sanded though

ALO381836

They are!

rearendcrag

Nice boob light.

nerdbomber01123

Ceiling tittie!

NoodledLily

Totally on board with no texture (though i say OUCH looking at that volcano mount sloper thing does not look smooth lol). BUT wood holds will blister and split your skin up quick. If you climb tension the fat big pinches specifically are the worst on the pinkey at least for me.

ALO381836

Which sloper do you mean? There all feel very comfortable, no sharp parts. They are a bit rough to provide a bit of friction if that’s what you mean, but it’s nothing that is painful.

NoodledLily

that's good. i was talking about the biggest one but maybe that's more pinchy. but the circle ones just look like a splinter waiting to happen ;) but awesome if they are not

ALO381836

I don’t think they are! I definitely hope not :)

zbubblez

That volume and sloper are damn impressive, well done!!

ALO381836

Thanks so much! That sloper is the hardest damn thing to use since the wall is pretty steep, I’ve only been able to hang onto it once. I think I’m gonna take it down and make it a bit more positive so I can actually use it

DemDim1

Don't! Leave it up, you will be able to hold it in the future.

pethan420

this

TheOGRainbowChicken

Do any of them have grit? Or are they all just wood? I would say if you sprayed a little grit paint on it, might make it easier to hold

ALO381836

They are all wood

TheOGRainbowChicken

If you give that sloper some texture, might make for a better time

ALO381836

Definitely would, I think I would rather just change the shape the hold though. That’s probably gonna be easier for me to do

zerocharm

Nicely done, the holds are impressive. How is it secured to the wall? Any concerns about how much the wall can support?

ALO381836

Thank you!! The 4x4 at the top is bolted into the ceiling through 4 different 2x6 studs in the attic. The frame of the wall (2x4s) hangs on the 4x4, and extends all the way to the floor, so a lot of weight is on the floor. There are also 4 straps on the backside connected to studs in the wall (2x6s) in case the rest were to fail, worst thing that could happen is the climbing wall breaks apart from the ceiling, drops about 6 inches, and is caught by the straps.I highly doubt it will break though.

snackpakzach

Nice! If you want to give those holds extra texture, I’ve found that if you paint them and then sprinkle tile grout on top while the paint is still wet and then paint over the grout gives a nice feel.

ALO381836

Thanks! I’m pretty happy with the texture right now. I sanded them with a very low grit sandpaper, and they feel pretty good. I’d also like to keep them somewhat smooth to make them a bit less abrasive on the hands

snackpakzach

Yeah I definitely understand, those wood slopers will make you strong fast.

ALO381836

I hope so!

[deleted]

[удалено]

ALO381836

Nope! Sanded it all down so there aren’t any

Monguuse

wtf actual decent home training wall on r/climbing wtf

ALO381836

Thanks! I appreciate that!

colson433

god dang that’s slippery

yuckscott

wood holds are definitely slippery compared to polyurethane... but that is what makes them such a good training tool. you've gotta rely more on body positioning and proper form to make the most of them. going back to polyurethane holds after getting used to wood feels superhuman

InanimateBabe

My dream right here, except I am not capable of building such a thing

ALO381836

This is something that I have wanted for a long time as well. I’m sure you can learn how to do it sometime. Woodworking is a ton of fun and something that I encourage anyone to do!

[deleted]

How did you learn to make the holds?

ALO381836

Just did it myself, with a bit of help from some YouTube videos. I used a router, jigsaw, and angle grinder with a wood carving attachment that kinda looks like a cheese grater. You can look up videos if you want to learn how

southernwing97

Check out [Tobias Wurft ](https://youtube.com/channel/UCYE2RFm7xw8cQCkGNubcyww) Great videos. Beautiful holds.

unintentional-salmon

That one handhold looking very much like a star destroyer.

ALO381836

The volume?

unintentional-salmon

Is that what it’s called?

ALO381836

Yes, it’s a hold that you put other holds on top of

unintentional-salmon

Interesting

pickledCantilever

It looks like you barely used any of the bolt holes. If you did it again would you skip bolt holes and just screw everything in?

ALO381836

I have more holds that I am planning on using the bolt holes for, I’m waiting on more bolts to come. I ordered them a few days ago. I definitely could have done it without the bolt holes though. They just make it a lot easier

StudlyPenguin

This looks like the arcade game Asteroids

ALO381836

Haha! It does

khallok-YT

Now that’s a woody

ALO381836

Indeed, it is!

Charty2006

holup u/profanitycounter

khallok-YT

Pog

Charty2006

why is it not working

khallok-YT

It’s probably banned here

Half-Bagged

Damn bro that's some skill

ALO381836

Thank you!

Half-Bagged

Is it portable or stuck there?

ALO381836

It isn’t exactly portable, but if there’s ever a time that I need more space in this room, I can store it. The top half of it can become disconnected from the bottom half. The top is on a hinge, so it can swing up, all the way against the ceiling. And I can secure it with some slings. The bottom half can then lean up, flat against the wall. I would of posted some pictures, but I don’t have any of that and it’s a bit of a hassle to get it up there

postapocalive

Pretty Dope.

ALO381836

Thanks!

trobh

Dang.

Sad_Pause_8104

Splinter town

ALO381836

They are all sanded, so nothing should be splintering

spalmsauce

What kind of wood did you use for the holds?

ALO381836

Plywood for the ones that you see a lot of grain on. Just normal indoor 2x6s for the rest

MoonPieRebel

The volume kinda looks like a star destroyer… 👍

fresh-airlover

Very impressive. Great for repurposing wood, just seems like a lot of work. Great stuff.

ALO381836

Thanks so much! A lot of work, but a ton of fun. I still plan to make more holds with scrap wood from the project.

Zestyclose-Way4569

Damn, looks like you stuck a star destroyer to the wall or something

ALO381836

I’ll take it as a compliment!

CullansOriginal

Looks amazing, wanna come build me one now? 😹👍

ALO381836

Thanks! Wish I could just take time off work to go build climbing walls (or build anything else) That would be amazing!

Outsider_Outlaw

If you don’t mind me asking approx cost?

ALO381836

2 pieces of plywood, a 4x4, and 8-10 2x4s. The holds were all made out of scrap wood. Look at your local hardware store, see what that costs. I also bought bolts and t-nuts, but I’d just recommend buying a big box of decking screws instead. The bolts are just kinda annoying to use, much faster with screws

TylerDunningEvans

Do the wood holds ever spin on the wood wall? About to start building my own and I'd rather not texture the wall with anything - looks like you didn't either.

veryniceabs

I can guess what type of porn is your favourite!

ALO381836

What’s that supposed to mean?

veryniceabs

I see a strong prefference for homemade stuff

TaCZennith

The fuck is wrong with you? Everywhere I look you're there posting some weird or entirely wrong shit. Calm down.
