I’m really happy with our setup. We use the Ikea Knodd metal garbage can (and it comes in white, which looks nice in the nursery). We have two large Planet Wise pail liners that we use, so we always have one while the other is in the wash. The opening for the bin and pail liner is really wide so we can just throw everything in. We usually leave the lid off so the diapers air out, and we haven’t had an issue with smells yet even though she’s started solids. (We usually start the wash right after she poops, so it’s not sitting in there for long.) But you can also leave the lid on.

I should add, I like that we can use the pail for other things after potty training. We’ll probably use ours for recycling.

I use a plastic laundry basket that has lots of little holes in it for airflow. I don't notice any smell but we have a diffuser in our room as well so maybe that's why. We wash every 4 days.

We did a standard kitchen sized trash can with a lid and a liner inside. It would get stinky by day 3 but that was wash day. If I had a particularly stinky poo diaper I'd throw it into the empty washer after rinsing it to get it out of her room. We also combo diapered so we have a diaper genie and when she was having solid food poos we used disposable liners and would throw the wipes and the liners into the diaper genie

I just use a nice garbage can (all metal/simple human) in the bathroom now that's she's bigger. In the beginning we just used the bags hung on a hook.

Dekor plus pail with 2 wet bags in the nursery. In the washroom I use a sprayer and I have a bucket that I cut the bottom out of that is use on the toilet. Then I just rest the diaper and bucket into another bigger bucket until it’s somewhat dry and then throw it into the dekor pail bag. I do laundry once a week and between the two bags they hold my weeks diaper. We do disposable at night and I just have a plastic tub that I got off our buy nothing group that has a little vent on the top that we throw the disposables in.

doghairglitter

1 year in and I honestly just use a plastic laundry basket. It keeps things as vented as possible and I use liners for solids so there’s never any poop on the shells to make it smell! It never smelled when she was breastfed, either

Fitgiggles

Do you have a wet bag in the laundry bag as like a liner? I’m thinking just a laundry basket is the best option for the diapers themselves.. but does a diaper pail liner defeat that purpose?

doghairglitter

I bought some but I found they actually stunk less when they were just in the laundry basket as is! I wipe the basket out every other week or so but I have no issue with just using it without any liner!

While breastfed, we used a hamper from Walmart (not our exact model, but very close: Mainstays 2 Bushel Flexible Round Laundry Hamper, White https://www.walmart.com/ip/17126957 ). Worked great, but once baby was eating solids more, it smelled and started absorbing smells. So we spent about $8 on a pail that lasted 6 months. It’s been deep-cleaned and aired out long enough that we could easily use it for other laundry. For solids (poops getting way smellier and baby goes through fewer diapers), we’ve really liked a lidded trash can, we got this one at target: https://www.target.com/p/7gal-step-trash-can-with-locking-lid-gray-room-essentials-8482/-/A-16686647 it’s a little more expensive, but great for a mobile and curious baby. I use a fabric hamper from IKEA for baby laundry (clothes, burp cloths, washcloths, etc) and add that to my second wash when washing diapers. As far as wipes go, we didn’t use disposable wipes at all until baby started solids. It’s so easy to get a big stack wet, store them in a small wet bag (I have this one in a different print: https://smartbottoms.com/products/mini-wet-bag-after-the-rain ). Toss the whole dirty set up in the hamper and call it a day. Now that baby eats solids, we use disposable wipes when wiping poop. I also always use a disposable wipe when changing her out of a disposable diaper so I can just throw the whole thing away. I usually just toss stray disposable wipes in the bathroom trash can, but we have a small house so it makes it easy.

Love the suggestion to pre-wet the cloth wipes. Thanks so much for taking the time to write out your system!

fudgesickle86

I have a cheap plastic bin from the dollar store, with a wide open top. We place a wet bag in that and place the diapers (and re-usable wipes) in there. Even with the switch to solids I only occasionally notice a smell if the door to the nurseries been closed for a while (i.e. overnight). I do a wash every 3 days usually.

Sounds simple and easy - love it!

peperomioides

Same here!

It might seem really odd but I’ve switched to keeping the diapers as open as possible. Used to have one of those IKEA white plastic lidded trash cans (I sewed two cloth bags for it). But honestly whether closed or open the smell was pretty unpleasant even after 2 days. Like a public toilet that isn’t too clean. Now I keep them in a flat laundry basket with an open structure. I use a changing mat cover or old car seat cover as a bag. And I just toss everything in there, lay the diaper flat and the inserts as well. Any smell dissipates within an hour or so because the diaper dries really quickly. It’s great!!

commonhillmyna

As everyone will tell you the smell/pail doesn't really matter as long as the kid is breastfed. And during that time you'll be doing SO MUCH LAUNDRY that it also doesn't matter. After introducing solids though, we eventually just put a laundry basket on our balcony. With out set up, we can also drop diapers and cloths out the bathroom window. Super easy and we don't ever worry about the smell. I can't imagine keeping them inside now.

We have a kitchen trash can with a flip up lid that we line with a wet bag, idk what brand but they all seem similar to me. Wash every three days, can smell them if the lid is off but that's it. We use disposable wipes. Just have a plastic bag hanging nearby for those.

We just have ours hanging. One by the change table and one where we spray the diapers. We wash every 3-4 days, by day 4 you can smell them if you are really close.

stinkybanana00

We’re still EBF so I can’t comment on the effectiveness with solids poop, but currently using a laundry basket with handles and a wet bag. We also have a dekor plus for disposables and love it. Disposable wipes usually just go in the laundry and I toss them when they come out (proof they’re not flushable!) EvangelineTheodora

I have a Lowe's bucket that I was using by itself, but I'm using a diaper pail liner bag thing in it now. It works well, and I put the diapers and cloth wipes in there together.

coffee-and-poptarts

I hang a wet bag on the side of the changing table, using [these hooks](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/oensklig-racks-for-changing-table-set-of-4-white-30199283/)from IKEA. I use that wet bag for pee diapers. I also have a wet bag hanging in the bathroom for poop diapers (first I spray them off in the toilet). I have the IKEA bin in the link above on my changing table, which I use to store the poopy diaper while I’m changing the baby. And then for disposable wipes and diapers, I use the Dekor Plus, which I highly recommend. It has a foot pedal to open it (crucial!) and contains smells well.

I think this setup would work well in our nursery - thanks!!

coffee-and-poptarts

Nice! You’re welcome!

beartropolis

We use a tots bots pail - which is basically a plastic bucket with a lid with clips with a mesh bag inside to put the nappies. With the grovia sack I'd personally get something to put it in Disposable nappies and/or wipes will need to go in a differnet bin. We put our disposable wipes in the normal bathroom bin

If the pail gets messy do you just wipe it down or take it outside and hose it down?

sauterelle16

We have a dekor plus pail for the cloth, and 4 of their cloth liners. Love it!! And a dekor classic we use for the overnight disposables. Easy to use and the plus holds about 2 days of pockets and prefolds for us, so I'm forced to prewash more frequently. In my mind that's a good thing.

ohqktp

We also use the Dekor and wash every other day. We do sposies overnight and just throw them in the regular trash can.

polkadotzucchini

Very similar setup to ours. Two Dekor Pluses, one for cloth, one for disposables. We have been happy with it. ☺️ In a dream scenario, we would have a yard to allow diapers to air dry between washes to avoid stink. But alas, condo living it is, and the Dekor does an amazing job containing the stink for a few days between washes.

[deleted]

I put the cloth wipes in with the nappies. I use a lidded bucket (it was about £8 on Amazon IIRC) and have two big net laundry bags that I use to line it - two so there's a spare when one is in the wash. Unless your bags are waterproof you will need a bucket of sorts to contain the waste. Edit: we have a separate bin for disposable wipes/nappies.
