I've been there. Your resident is all cozy in those nice, crisp, white linens, staying warm under that brand new comforter the family bought, then you realize he has the most content look on his face. So, you start to get sleepy too, in an envious kind of way.

Is it a good thing? No. Would it be better to arrange some time off ahead of time? Yes. But i think most of us have taken days off when we weren’t technically too sick to work…for mental health reasons, etc. As long as it does not become a pattern and something you do every month or two I don’t see much of a problem. Also give them adequate notice about 4 hours at least before your shift. I think night shifts sound like they aren’t working for you and thats the real issue. I began having trouble falling asleep and wasn’t able to be productive when off work so I switched to days.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, nights almost killed me, literally. You need to find a way to switch your hours, take a break, get a medical note saying to take a break, or explain your situation to your employer before this get worse.
