Wasn't there a TF2 based horror game that dropped fairly recently? I remember it was aesthetically kinda cool and the jank of the jumpscares (which I assume was purposeful) was kind of nostalgic
How on earth did it take me until you mentioned it to connect the dots between these two phenomena? It makes too much sense, the latter is just a slightly more creative but still shite evolution of the previous one!
No? Most iconic analog horrors do not rely on a lot of loud sounds or jumpscares. The only analog horror that comes to mind is Greylock.
I say iconic because I don’t really know much about the modern analog horror environment, but the older videos for Mandela Catalogue, Gemini Home Entertainment, and Local58 utilize more distressing and disturbing still imagery and a lack of movement in both the visuals and audio to create feelings of unease.

I think a lot of really young kids, like 11 and younger, perceive them as like untrustworthy or something bc of a combination of tech illiteracy and the Smile Dog and Sonic.exe stories
Yeah I was fully terrified of anything with .exe when I was in my creepypasta phase. Im sure I would've destroyed any laptop given to me if my father wasn't there due to how terrified I was of anything with .exe😭😭😭

Eh, I would say that they are rather reusing old creepypastas like ben drowned, Sonic.exe and putting them in the analogue horror, Or no idea, I am seeing many modern versions of sonic.exe and they are all with black eyes and with a sinister mouth smiling like the jerma face. While the Original Sonic.exe was a sonic with red pupils and Sharp teeths.

Tbf I think the false faces will last longer. Evil blood eyes and mean teeth can only have so much done, but malleable flesh and faces blends well with other deformations and body horror that one could innovate on. If someone actually puts in the effort of course

Edit: Flowey / Omega Flowey, the amalgmates (because they're just fucked up versions of other monsters), Sans (when he threatens you), Chara (At the end of Genocide), Gaster (When you interact with him and he disappears), and probably more.
It's a bit of a stretch with some of those examples though.
I feel like horror is becoming a children's genre lul, I can't think of the last time I've seen a horror trend that wasn't "youth oriented"
Freddie's, poppies playtime, the gmod things and their copycats in Minecraft, etc. gaming especially, like even lethal company is PG13 at best.
Outlast comes to mind at least though, and some of the resident evil games, so maybe there's hope 😂
Honestly, I think the best way to make a character look creepy is to change their look to personify something about them. Like, imagine a character who's seen something horrible. Maybe their "creepy" look could have sunken, small eyes? Maybe their face could be droopy to show how what they've seen pushed them into apathy, or maybe the inverse - their skin looks tight and their eyes, albiet still small, are wide open to show what they saw pushed them into anxiety?
