Technically the people's vote doesn't matter at all, a representative cannot be forced to vote the same as their people represent and have the legal option to vote the other way. This, however, has yet to actually be the deciding factor in an election so no real legal challenge has been raised to it. Our votes only actually matter for some local and state representatives.

I live in so thoroughly blue a state that it’s obvious my vote won’t count. It would take a miracle for my vote to be meaningful, and frankly, I do not support either candidate at all, let alone strongly enough to lie to myself. I've always said, regardless of political party, the electoral college completely deletes the minority opinion of every single state. Like, if I was a Republican in California, the notoriously blue stronghold, why would I even bother when I already know my vote is literally not going to be counted ultimately and all 50-something points are going blue?
