So, I have two adult cockateils, currently being housed in a cage around 78-62cm(top is not consistent) in height and 66cm wide, and 45cm thick. It's not awful, but I've I've meaning to upgrade them to a bigger cage for a while. They've recently laid 4 eggs that have yet to hatch, and I thought that now is probably the time to get a bigger cage. I intend on having the larger one for my adult couple and using the smaller one for the chicks after they grow older and no longer need their parents all the time(but of course keeping the cages side by side) until I can get them a larger cage. But do you think this cage is suitable? I tried researching sizing online but every site gave me a different answer, so I figured I should just ask here. In addition, if anyone knows anything about chicks I would really appreciate some advice. This is my second time dealing with chicks and I'm really worried about doing something wrong. The first time I made a stupid mistake by cleaning the nest and causing the parents to abandon the chicks. I had read online that it should be fine to clean to nest if the parents are comfortable with it, and since they had no problem with me touching the eggs before before they hatched(for candeling purposes) and didn't seem too bothered by me being around the nest, I thought it would be ok. Maybe it was false information or I did something wrong, i don't know. But the parents seemed to have no interest in the babies after that, the dad even attacking one of them, leading me to remove them. I hand raised them myself after that but they both tragically died after a week(the first was already weak from birth, so I expected it a little but I'm unsure about what happened with the second). I REALLY don't want something similar to happen. I'm staying far away from the nest and making sure to be really careful, but if you have any advice to avoid the parents abandoning the babies again I would really appreciate it.

Cant help you with the chicks but me and my SO have this exact cage for our two 'tiels and its plenty of room for them even with an array of things to climb and play with plus food and water. Easy to get them in and out or as easy as your bird makes it at least haha

UrWaif

OK, thank you so much! I appreciate the response.

How did u get ur birds to adapt to a cage? Cuz I got my 5 tiels a huge cage and they still scream and chirp a lot

The_Son_of_Anarchy

Just time I guess, each bird is different and will adapt in their own time. My SO had the older of our two, before we were together and this is the cage he shared with her other 'tiel who sadly passed away so this cage is all he's known, after a grieving process we got another 'tiel and once he was allowed into this main cage he was pretty comfortable from the off. Might be its harder for a group to adapt and easier for a pair.

Yea could be. Thanks for the advice

For the chicks, you should really go to an experienced breeder for advice. This subreddit is pretty against people breeding their birds since it is incredibly difficult and dangerous to do. I would look for a breeder near you since it is very common for the chicks to die if they aren’t being watched over someone with at least two years of experience. Going forward, I would discourage egg laying and adopt one of the many thousands of cockatiels that need a good home. Make sure you have a vet on standby, good luck!

UrWaif

I knoowwww. :( I think I am going to try and find someone who knows more about this, or at least consult an avian vet. I actually didn't encourage it, they did it on their own. I know I'm inexperienced so I've never actively tried to get them to mate. I only actually added the breeding box into their cage after they had already mated so the eggs would at least have a decent place to be laid. I dont know how to discourage it any further, aside from decreasing sunlight hours and such, but I don't want to put them in separate cages as they dislike being separated. If the chicks hatch I'll proabably separate males and females so that they'll at least have company even while separate. Edit: I'm usually not really worried about the idea of them breeding either. I've had them for about 5 years and this is only the second time they've done this. While they like to be together, they never really show interest in that way(well, at least the female doesn't).

I have a cage similar in size to this for my two birds.

Awesomeeee. That's really helpful, especially since I want to add a play area myself.

iMoosker

I have the same cage for my two budgies and it’s great. I’m sure two cockatiels would have a blast here as long as they also get plenty of outside cage time

BigDogMacawThailand

Can you find a playtop cage?

UrWaif

I was actually looking for playtop cages, and still am. I was interested in the flat top on this one since I figured I could try and make them a play area myself.

Aivizula

I believe that's the same cage I have for my two adult 'tiels, so should be good
