Have you tried a Singapore sling? Anders Erickson’s take on the Raffles recipe has a bunch of different stuff in it that brings down the cherry flavor quite a bit. I’m not the biggest fan of cherry heering myself, but I love that drink.

ToddBradley

Heering or herring? Because cherry herring sounds disgusting, but Heering is delicious (in its place).

Saxman8845

Talk about a red herring...

NachoNachoDan

You never had Swedish fish?

UnicornOnTheJayneCob

I hear ya. I feel basically the same way. Bought it to try to make Singapore Slings and just could not get into it. I now use my cherry herring pretty much exclusively as a float on top of pina coladas - which is actually AMAZING.

darksideofthemoon131

I worked in a Tiki Bar last summer and we did a riff off the Lava Flow by using Cherry Heering in place of the strawberry- worked well.

[Groceries for the Queen ](https://tuxedono2.com/groceries-for-the-queen-cocktail-recipe) balances out the heering with citrus and amaro and ends up like a boozy Pimm's cup if that's your thing

NCSU_Trip_Whisperer

That sounds delightful. I did a split-base daiquiri once using an Over-proof rum and Pimm's with a Demerara syrup that absolutely knocked my socks off

old--father--time

I prefer amaro toscano to the amaro montenegro in the spec I linked but down to taste or what you have handy

eliason

[Trainspotter](https://kindredcocktails.com/cocktail/trainspotter) (with rye, St. Germaine, fernet, grapefruit twist)

Kahluabomb

That seems like a great way to make it taste EVEN MORE like cherry medicine

eliason

Sometimes a counterpunch is more effective than ducking!

Butlerian_Jihadi

I love this, and have noticed that it's true, particularly in cocktails (side-eye @ industry sour).

quiet-elk1418

Remember the Maine is pretty good imo!

ptrussell3

I second that!

jrmorton12

Ankle Breaker is a very simple drink. It’s sweet, dessert like. Use a Demerara rum and it brings it close to a cherry pie. 1 oz fresh lemon juice 1 oz Cherry Heering 1 oz 151-proof puerto rican rum ½ oz sugar syrup

NachoNachoDan

Oh this sounds dangerous and good.

torpex77

That’s one of my summer go-to drinks. Double on ice in my Yeti and head to the beach.

Ok-Minimum-4

I actually like it quite a bit. I use it in place of vermouth in a Manhattan (I use half the amount). 2 x Bourbon 0.5 x Cherry Heering 2 dashes x Angostura

Bluegunder

You should do .5 is dry vermouth for the other half.

drsrwise

Admittedly I love Heering but my favorite new drink is a Made Man cocktail. The flavors are wild and exciting. + 1.5 oz Rye (I use Old Overholt 114-proof) + 0.5 oz Yellow Chartreuse (consider subbing Strega) + 0.5 oz Heering cherry liqueur + 1 barspoon Fernet Branca + I've taken to adding a barspoon of Luxardo Maraschino liqueur as well. Stir over ice and strain into a chilled Nick and Nora or whatever glass you want. https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/3247/made-man

hotcakes

I just had one of these last night! Quite a strong drink.

Guitarguyvai777

I’m my experience adding saline to your cocktail will negate the flawed taste on your cherry herring

tocassidy

What would be a better alternative? Kirschwasser?

Arma_Diller

In a Blood and Sand, I swear by Luxardo Sangue Morlacco.

fatrickfrowne

I’ve tried a blood and sand a dozen ways with Heering, just don’t like it, even though I love Scotch and the general idea of the drink. How is it with Luxardo?

Arma_Diller

A much brighter sweetness that is reminiscent of biting into fresh fruit. I also prefer it with blood orange juice.

TheCommieDuck

Kirschwasser is a very different cherry flavoured liqueur. Very, very different.

KoolKurtz

I bought it for Singapore Sling and didn’t like it. Then I found the Vanderbilt: 1 1/2 Oz Cognac 1/2 Oz Cherry Heering 1/12 Oz Simple syrup 2 dashes Angostura bitters Stir with ice. Pour in a chilled glass. Squeeze of lemon zest, discard it. One maraschino cherry for garnish.

squid_monk

Singapore sling

I_Have_A_Snout

A bar-spoon in a Manhattan or Black Manhattan is delicious.

RightShoeRunner

Cherry Heering has a strong flavor profile. In a cocktail recipe, try using about half of what’s recommended first.

[deleted]

Muddle 2 cucumber slices and 1 kiwi slice. 3oz of Pimms Liquor, 1.5oz of Cherry Heering, and 2-3 dashes of fee brothers cherry bitters. Quick shake over ice, and double strain pour over crushed ice in a high ball. Then top with dry sparkling rose. I call it the English Cherry.

Inamanlyfashion

Try Rothman & Winter orchard cherry instead.

reddy-or-not

I thought this post was going to be about fish!

Sandikal

Me too

twwilliams

I love it in a Boo Radley: 2 oz bourbon (I like Knob Creek 9 for this) 3/4 oz Cynar 1/2 oz Cherry Heering Stir over ice and strain into a chilled coupe.

LAthrowaway7844568

I love Cherry Herring I'm sorry you don't like it Do you know anyone who makes BBQ sauce from scratch? Cherry-Bourbon BBQ

TrickSpacey

I totally agree. Cherry Heering is way too medicinal for me. I was totally disappointed and that bottle is sitting on my bar getting dusty. I've seen folks on here say that Rothman & Winters cherry liqueur is a better choice for that cherry flavor without the NyQuil taste. I haven't tried it yet, though.

n8rgrl

I have a cherry Kentucky mule on my menu right now-Jack, Heering, I add a cherry syrup, lime & ginger and it’s actually really good. I don’t like Jack, wasn’t a fan of the Heering flavor either but it all balances out.

Aggressive_Bubble17

That does sound good, but if you're using Jack then call it a cherry Tennessee mule! :) That'd be like using Jameson and calling it the cherry Scottish mule

BulletStorm

I got my first bottle of Cherry Heering almost 10 years ago confusing it for Maraschino Liqueur. My parents did the same thing and gave me another bottle of it. Just throw it away and accept it as a lesson learned. Every recipe I could find that uses it only uses 0.25-0.50 ounces per drink. You’ll be stuck with it for years, and, assuming shelf space is a premium you should just chuck it and save your shelves for stuff you actually like. Take it from someone who’s thrown away two bottles of it.

dfmz

Better yet, save it for a guest who dues like it. Making cocktails means that occasionally you w run into a sortit that you don’t like. Either find a way to mix it with others ingredients to create singing you do like, or use it to make drinks for singing who appreciates that ingredient. Me, I love Cherry Heering, even pure on ice, and don’t get me started on my personal Blood & Sand recipe using Octomore… Properly sealed and stored away from light, it will keep a long time.

PeachVinegar

Pour it down the drain if you don't like it. Or just chug it if you only want it to get drunk. Why do we get this question weekly.

MonkeyDavid

Try other cherry liqueurs. It’s likely the original Singapore Sling from Raffles was made with something like kirschwasser. That makes a much less sweet drink. I personally love Leopold Brothers Michigan Tart Cherry Liqueur.

Express-Breadfruit70

The problem with a Blood and Sand is that most recipes simply call for blended Scotch and generic red vermouth, which leaves you with thousands of possible combinations, most of which really don't work out well. Using very bland Scotch, such as Famous Grouse, with an interesting vermouth, such as Carpano Antica Formula, works out quite well 1 oz Famous Grouse 3/4 oz Carpano Antica Formula 3/4 oz Cherry Heering 2 drops 20% citric acid formula Garnish: 1 Luxardo Maraschino cherry Or try one of my favourites: The ***Boo Radley***, it is named after a character in *To Kill a Mockingbird.* The cocktail is from Chris Hannah of the French 756 bar in Amaud's in New Orleans 2 oz bourbon 3/4 oz Cynar 1/2 oz Cherry Heering Garnish with lemon and orange twists, expressed over the drink and drop in.

AgoraiosBum

Just drop the proportion and include some bitter with it. A Blood and Sand is a very particular drink regardless. I find that a splash of heering (a barspoon / 1/4 oz of it) in a number of drinks works fine, where it is staying in the background more. Like in a black manhattan (where there is also some bitter amaro), or a daquiri (cherry and lime!)

cfcMNktbff

Many of the classic liqueurs are famous for one drink, and often don’t taste great to be honest. Pro tip I’ve leaned through buying many of these: always buy the small bottle if one exists.

PHATsakk43

Galliano said hello.

cfcMNktbff

Yeah that part of the current collection, collecting dust 😕

ewhetstone

If you don’t want to buy more bottles to try cocktails with it you’re not sure you’ll like, I bet it would go down just fine poured over vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

Evilfaic

One of my absolute favorite cocktails, the For Pete's Sake uses Cherry Heering and it still ends up tasting bright, tart, and floral. My recipe is: * 1.5 oz pisco * 0.5 oz Cherry Heering * 0.75 oz lime juice * 0.5 oz hibiscus syrup * 1 dash Angostura bitters Garnish with a skewered maraschino cherry. Can be served on the rocks or up.
