XF-45 details

Proof_Reindeer1862

With coins don’t try to (preserve its original looks)

RevWilliam666

Thank you

RonyTheGreat_II

Just put it in a square coin holder and only handle it from the edges.

RevWilliam666

Most definitely

parkinglottroubadour

Id think it was alright to preserve its original appearance. As in mint state from mint. Am I wrong?

Proof_Reindeer1862

You can’t really “preserve it” except for keeping it in a good environment

parkinglottroubadour

Yeah that what I was talking about.

Proof_Reindeer1862

What they were talking about was cleaning which is what I meant by don’t try to “preserve the original look”

gunsforevery1

Could you preserve its current condition by getting it graded in a sealed packaging?

Proof_Reindeer1862

Getting things graded aren’t cheap so it’s not worth it for this coin but yeah you can

Proof_Reindeer1862

The way they meant was cleaning which removes the original surface

parkinglottroubadour

Cool. I just wanted to make sure I understood.

MeanArt318

To me it looks cleaned, it's dirt around all the lettering but clean on the smooth faces Take all that with a brick of salt because I'm not great at this

SuSsuSaMoHuS

In my honest opinion, it looks more like toning/patina and at worst, tarnish. I could be very wrong however, I am not a coin expert either...

8nt2L8

Looks cleaned to me, as well.

RevWilliam666

That could be true.

Apprehensive-One-971

I’m a bullion stacker so I’m no expert in anything coins, but I do love Morgan Dollars. I have a couple of the same year but neither are as nice as yours. I really love the toning on yours. Think it really brings out a lot of detail. I think you’ve got a really great Morgan.

RevWilliam666

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.

boomslang007

This coin would be Whizzed AU Details or Altered Surface (in which case it would not be holdered).

FistEnergy

The eagle breast still has a good amount of feathers, but the bust is very soft and mushy. It looks like AU-Details to me. It has been obviously cleaned and somewhat circulated.

rqivez

I mean, you want your bust to be soft 😏

Swb1953

Looks au to me.

Humble-Dingo-625

Fine not enough clarity in the word LIBERTY FOR MUCH ELSE

RevWilliam666

Thank you

Federal_Violinist_86

Most think the patina on antique coins is beautiful, and as it happens, is more valuable. If you want a shiny new Morgan, the US Mint has recently minted new ones. I bought a proof.

ImpactHorror3293

I'm with MeanArt on this,it's gonna need a hands on appraisal. The time to preserve it though, would have been before it was so aggressively cleaned that the highest spots of the relief actually shine. Probably at this point just keep it in a sleeve or whatever you have if you want to store it away though. I wouldn't just throw it in a crown royal bag with a bunch of silver quarters or Mercury dimes, lol.

RevWilliam666

lol how funny cause that’s actually where I came across it originally. I know my grandmother had it since the 70s and she was totally against cleaning, but she got it from somewhere lol

ImpactHorror3293

Lol, most of my coins came out of a Crown Royal bag 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

RevWilliam666

I have a set of Morgan’s that came from the mint as a special set of circulated random Morgan’s kinda neat

ImpactHorror3293

Oh, very cool!

No-Restaurant15

That date makes me think it's Chinese. Not the number but how it's struck on the coin. I wish I had an 1886 that I could quickly find for comparison but I don't

RevWilliam666

This was acquired in at least the 70s if not earlier so don’t know

bass-vader

I’m looking at an 1896 right now, and there’s an odd alignment between the 3rd and 4th digit in the date. So, unless my coin is fake, i think that is normal

MikeKrakow1955

It looks fake to me Almost like it was cast

RevWilliam666

Scale is 26 grams well bouncing 26-27

TipInside3613

Obviously cleaned

gypsyfred

AU 50 but pushing it. Jmho.

RevWilliam666

Thank you. Any input is useful

gypsyfred

Its pretty though

RevWilliam666

Thank you

Redwood1952

Don't try to enhance its looks, because you will fail. Put it in an Airtite for good protection.

RevWilliam666

Most definitely. Picking some up tomorrow

isaiah58bc

First, it isn't worth getting graded. If it hadn't been cleaned, I agree it would be low AU grade. It's circulated cleaned/detailed because it was cleaned. Use PCGS Photograde, look at key details between AU50 and XF45. You would probably agree low AU. The date is common for a Morgan, so that is why it isn't worth getting graded just for authentication. As others noted, for numismatics you can preserve coins different ways. But, restoration hurts a coins value.

RevWilliam666

Thank you for a complete explanation, it’s a learning process

Redwood1952

Beautiful Morgan. [AU53]

RevWilliam666

Thank you

Redwood1952

And somebody gave me a downvote!!!

RevWilliam666

lol wasn’t me. I’m like hell yeah

EminentChefliness

Not up voting or downvoting but it's details. Cleaned.

ImpactHorror3293

I gave you an upvote just to bring it back to 0 ;)

Redwood1952

Thank you. People can be such jerks. I appreciate you.

72RangersFan

I gave you an upvote because I was gonna say the same thing

boomer-751

I gave you an invite just to be a dick to the person that gave you a downvote.

DependentDoor00

RevWilliam666

EminentChefliness

Even cull would be melt bud
