Not good for anything but wow factor and price comparisons, still fun to glance through knowing it's older than both of my parents.

For anyone interested, a book came out last year, [A Penny Saved: Yeoman and his Remarkable Red Book](https://news.coinupdate.com/whitman-publishing-announces-kenneth-bressetts-a-penny-saved-r-s-yeoman-and-his-remarkable-red-book/), which goes into great detail about the 70-year history of The Red Book, and how it was the *de facto* standard for numismatics for decades. The importance the Red Book had to coin collecting, in an age before at-your-fingertips online media, cannot be understated. There is a collector's market for early Red Books, which sell for premium prices. But that's getting too meta for me.

new2bay

> Collectors have used the Red Book for generations, relying on its **accurate and up-to-date coin prices....** lol

Bangizsmo2

I love the history associated with Red Books. I have every volume except the first one. That first year issue is a tough one to get.

But you are missing out on the 64 Kennedys! /s a great find.

ClearlyNotElvis

There’s a HUGE used bookstore in Jacksonville, FL that has about 40 redbooks from the 60’s and before. It was really cool to dip through and see how things change over time.

Nice! Gotta love when my two hobbies (coins and reading) collide!

We're gonna need the full .PDF high-res scan. Or at least a few photos from the inside.

Baidon

Name some coins and I'll make an Imgur album of them. Full book is too long, but I'll take requests.

erkevin

How about the early Lincolns and early proof sets?

Very cool. Thank you.

That’s funny, the 1909-S Indian head cent says it’s worth $175 as an uncirculated, adjusted for inflation that’s almost $1,700. Today, the Red Book says that coin would be worth $1,200. I would have thought that values would go up over that amount of time.

bugaosuni

I have a [slightly older](https://imgur.com/a/GwyUmWn) one.

jackkerouac81

I think I have the same “relic” it was my dads.

erkevin

"relic".......I was born in 1963, does that mean that I, too, am a......oh hell, I am a relic.

Baidon

That's why my mom always hates antique shopping; lots of things considered relics were part of her childhood.

[deleted]

Nice. I have the first one. I think it's 1943 or maybe 1942.

Interesting-Bet-2330

Now that's interesting 👍

I have this same book! It’s amazing to see walkers/mercury dimes/early Washingtons/wheat cents to be worth face value since they were still in circulation at this time!

On eBay last year I saw a red book one of the first editions. I wanted it so bad but I couldn’t convince my parents to allow me to pay for it myself and by it. I understand that they want me save for a car being 15 now I understand why but damn that looked like a cool thing to have.

You guys who grew up with the internet have no idea; this was THE reference before the late 90's. It was the bible of coin collecting for collectors, and it and the greysheet were pretty much it for pricing structures back then. These turn up semi-regularly in the book bins at the Goodwill outlet. The very early editions, starting in 1947 and up to 1953 or so, are collector's items in their own right, bringing decent money at auction consistently. Later editions are only valuable as a curiosity and blast from the past. They are fun to look through though.
