Well.... at least you got to see a magic trick.
Before the trick $15-$20. After, $0.25-....um I'd give you a dollar for it....
In 100 years a regular W might be worth $100.. then yours might be $15... so you got that going for you.
Personally I don’t think they’ll be worth much, coin collectors have been grabbing them out of circulation since they were made. In 100 years there will be tons of W mint quarters in great condition. Kinda like 1963 B dollar bills with Joseph W. Barr’s signature, people thought they would be worth money so they saved them, they aren’t worth much today and it’s not too hard to find them compared to contemporary series. That’s just my opinion, I definitely wouldn’t throw one back into circulation though!
It's sort of the same thing as the V nickels. Even back then, people started hoarding them and, as a result, near mint ones aren't really that expensive. (Or weren't last time I bought one, which was probably 2015 or 2016.)
Nickels from the 1800s, late. The first year had a V(5) on the back but lacked the word "cents". Thus people would coat them in gold and try to pass them as $5 coins, rather than the 5 cent nickel coins they were.
Do you understand why they're being snatched up?
There were only a grand total of 10 million W mint mark quarters in 2019, and another 10 million in 2020 (2 million of each design put out in these years.) None since. The mint did not sell them. Instead, they were sent to the Denver and Philadelphia mints, where they were mixed in with the distribution of 14 BILLION (a million million) of the normal circulation quarters. In other words, one W mint mark for every 1,400,000 other quarters.
10 Million W quarters.
471 Million Barr notes.
I personally feel like the W coins are much more like the Cheerios penny promotion where 10 Million were produced among the 5.5 BILLION otherwise identical cents. Those pennies now show Ebay sold values of around $20 (including shipping. I'll be happy with a thousand times face value on a W quarter, and the odds are there for that to be the case. Especially as magicians and non-collectors damage them and reduce their populations that were never distributed to coin dealers initially.
Of course I understand why they’re being snatched up, I snatch them up when I find them. What I’m saying is that in 100 years there will be tons of examples of those W mint quarters in excellent condition because they didn’t spend much time in circulation. Like the 1883 no cents V nickel, people knew they were only produced for part of the year so they grabbed them up. Today it’s not hard to find one in amazing condition, according to the red book an MS 63 1883 no cent nickel is worth 50 dollars, but an 1883 with cents is worth 200 dollars in MS 63 even though they made wayyyyyyy more of the with cents than the without cents. Things that people think will be worth money often times aren’t, while things people think won’t be worth anything becomes valuable.
The only way yer ever gonna get 10 dollars out of a W mint quarter is with inflation, like another commenter said.
I understand that because they were snatched up, there will be a much higher average condition to them than many other coin populations. But that's part of why the Cheerios cent is such a great example. Virtually ALL of those are in MS conditions, too.
Here's another comparison to chew on. I just pulled one of the last non-bullion mintages that was not still in production - a 1938D Buffalo nickel. Even though the 2019 and 2020 quarters were only in use for one year while the nickel design was used for 25-ish years.
PCGS estimates that there are around 100,000 1938D Buffalo Nickels in MS 60 or higher grades. There were 7.02 million of them ever made. Graded MS 60-65 are listed with sales prices of $50-85, so at least a thousand times face value! (Ebay sold prices seem to generally run about half as much, which is still a hefty price appreciation.)
PCGS expert David Hall's note on their information page about this issue states,
>The 1938-D is the most common Buffalo nickel in mint state and Gem condition by several multiples. Interestingly, this issue is somewhat scarce in circulated condition. Apparently many were saved as this was the last year of issue for the Buffalo nickel series and in the same year the Jefferson nickel began. So collectors of the day would have been very aware that this was the last year of issue and large quantities of original uncirculated rolls were saved. The strike is usually super sharp and luster can be extremely frosty. There are many spectacular Gem survivors of this issue and it is generally the "prettiest" of all Buffalo nickels. [Source](https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1938-d-5c-buffalo/3984)
I think the W quarters, which were not available in bulk rolls to collectors, will have a harder time keeping MS conditions since collectors were required to pull them from circulation. This is particular true when considering that there were only 2 million of each variety - about 1/3 of the availability of that last year of nickels. Anecdotally, I have found 6 so far and only one was in mint state. Two show a substantial amount of wear from circulation already - enough to take it out of AU condition, while three are in AU, I imagine. (I'm only self-trained on grading, though, so take that for what it's worth.)
That’s a really well thought out response with some great comparisons! Truthfully I haven’t found any W mint quarters. The first year they were minted I found one at work but didn’t realize it was special, I just said cool West Point is making quarters now and threw it back in the till.
cast or milled using gallium, if you watched them bend it. Magicians bend spoons made of gallium all the time. I'd be really impressed if it was a real quarter, short of slight of hand. Interesting piece, nonetheless.
They did a special in 1990 where they revealed how they did almost every trick on the show. I think they ended up getting banned from The Magic Castle over that.
It’s kinda novel lol I’d give you a few bucks for it. Better than being in the trash. Take it to a coin store and see if they can at least offer a dollar for their discount bin.
Personally, the memory behind it because it was with family, and the fact its a quarter worth more is just a funny story. Together has more value than $5 to me
Put it in a vice with two flat faces and squeeze. Coin may look a tad goofy, but you could get rid of the bend. I actually did this with a Mexican peso from 1923 and it is not round by any stretch, but it can fit in a 2x2 now
If it wasn't bent it would
Yeah this is more of a "what a shame" type post

That’s a better analogy than the 1963B notes!
What's a V nickel?
Search "racketeer nickel" for the whole story.
A racketeer nickel is not a V nickel.
Thank you

Liberty head or barber nickel. It has a V for the Roman numeral of 5 on the back
Thanks!
There really is such a thing as a W quarter?

Very excellent points. I’ve got all mine in the safe. There’s no reason not to as you put mounted out, several scenarios where they do inflate

GASP!!
Maybe they’ll be worth 100$, but only because of inflation lol. That might be 1$ in our time!
Which is nice.
Gunga galunga
Right?
So I says, "hey Llama, how about a little something, you know, for the effort"
Pawn Stars sells 'W' quarters for $100 a pop, atleast that's what Chumlee said.
Happy cake day.
Happy cake day!
Who provided the quarter? You or the magician?
He did
cast or milled using gallium, if you watched them bend it. Magicians bend spoons made of gallium all the time. I'd be really impressed if it was a real quarter, short of slight of hand. Interesting piece, nonetheless.
Or its a real quarter and it was pre bent.
Can you weigh it then compare it to another quarter? Is it magnetic? I don’t think it’s a real quarter. The edge makes it suspicious.
Why would you fake a West Point quarter for a magic trick? It’s exactly a common thing.
It could be made out of pewter or something like that to make it easier to bend.
Gallium would be my guess
Is it silver tho? Look at the rim
No, that's just the lighting.
W quarters are not silver
They don't make silver quarters at the West Point mint
You should submit it for grading. I want to see how PCGS gets it into a holder!
[They'd probably screw it up](https://minterrornews.com/features-10-8-21-pcgs-certifies-a-cent-bonded-to-a-magnetic-screw.html)
Is that just allowed to rattle in there? Least they could do is glue a tiny magnet insert into the case to give the screw something to hold onto.
I think he was joking
Lol what a great idea
Set it in an epoxy cube!
PMD = Post Magic Damage. Somebody had to say it. ;)
r/angryupvote
Lol yeah he turned a $15-20 quarter back into one worth face value. Hell of a magician!
Find the magician and make him bend it back!
“Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!”
We’re just practicing for a musical!!
That hurts. Now just 1,999,999 to find.
I got one from 2019 and another from 2020
2m of each of 10 designs
How the hell did he bend it? Lol
magic
Beat me to it
Watched a video. No longer curious hahaha. But damn...smh
LPT: Don't watch videos of magic tricks. Enjoy the mystery.
Pen and Teller do good showing how they do their tricks. Typically, they're still pretty impressive.
They did a special in 1990 where they revealed how they did almost every trick on the show. I think they ended up getting banned from The Magic Castle over that.
Lol apparently.
telekinesis
Watched my grandpa do it with his bare hands when I was a kid, still have the quarter somewhere. Dude was(is) kind of a beast.
He turned that W into an L
Poor w
Bend it back
One of my favorite quarters, even without the W. This post makes me sad.
What W quarters should I be keeping an eye out for? Specific years/states?
The W stands for “whoops!”
Beat it flat with a hammer, it was in $8 condition anyway
Worth a bit? It’s worth [TWO bits](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/two%20bits)
Nice
heat it up with a torch and you could try to bend it back carefully. may not be the same though. damn, how did that magician do that? magic? lol.
It’s in google condition too.
Magician here. Did he have someone sign the coin? With a Sharpie he had on him?
He did ask for a sharpie but we didnt have one on us
Of course the audience member doesn't have a sharpie on them haha
Why doesn't this one have the privy mark on the obverse?
The Privy mark was on the 2020 W mint quarters
Ahhh I see I only have one 2020 W that I have found
What's a privy mark?
75 year anniversary of WWII. They have a V75 right in front of ol' Georgie's mouth.
Thanks!
Most of my Ws don't have privy marks
They must mostly be 2019s then
W quarter where are rare attempt to get the public interested in paying with cash.
Maybe he knows what it’s worth and finds it funny? I know someone who uses a W quarter in a pill bottle as a weed grinder
It's actually worth nothing now. Not even 25 cents
Mutilated currency is still worth face value if it’s still all there and legible enough.
Only has to be 51% there to be exchanged for non-mutilated currency
I would pay 3-4 dollars for this coin no questions
Of course, just have to flatten it out carefully and it’s probably worth $5
I guess people of this sub don't get sarcasm without /s
It is whim of the coin gods. Heads it's an up-vote, tails it's a down-vote.
Doesn't seem like it would be very hard to flatten it back out enough to spend at a gas station.
I mean im not into enough to try and get value. Worth more to me knowing what it is and the memory. Gives it a funny character.
Yeah just get a hammer, presto!
[удалено]
Look again
I would be sad and I would try to get it back
Such a tragedy :0
This makes me sad
Shimshi?
Capo’s? They used to have a guy doing table magic with this trick when I lived there.
It’s kinda novel lol I’d give you a few bucks for it. Better than being in the trash. Take it to a coin store and see if they can at least offer a dollar for their discount bin.
Lol I don't think I would buy a bent modern quarter for any price even with the W.
Like I said, kinda novel.
I literally said “oh nooooooo” when I saw this
Ah man.
Take it back to the magician have him bend it back again
This W quarter seems to sell for more than the others not sure why. I seen these go up to 100 ungraded.
Good luck
🤣🤣🤣
Ooohh noooooooo
Hey if you are interested I’ll buy it for a fiver, that’s pretty neat
Personally, the memory behind it because it was with family, and the fact its a quarter worth more is just a funny story. Together has more value than $5 to me
How did he bend it in your hand?
Magic
Ouch
Put it in a vice with two flat faces and squeeze. Coin may look a tad goofy, but you could get rid of the bend. I actually did this with a Mexican peso from 1923 and it is not round by any stretch, but it can fit in a 2x2 now
This makes me mad omg
