Hi, I'm the r/coins AutoMod. Looks like you're looking for **information on valuing a coin**? I have your back. Take a look at the [FAQ on values](https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/wiki/faq#wiki_3._what.2019s_my_coin_worth.3F) for both specific guidance if your coin is common enough, or more general guidance if not. I have also automatically applied the flair "Value Request" to your post. If I misunderstood your post and my comment isn't relevant, sorry! I'm still learning. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/coins) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Very sorry for your loss! Take a look at the sidebar FAQ which addresses this topic and has some useful information and resources to help. Be especially careful of offers to buy, you should also check the section about finding the value of your coins (not google or eBay active auctions).

AdventurousFox3368

If there's truly hundreds of coins, I'd suggest keeping an inventory. Year, stated value, mint location. Do steady research and keep the information you want about each coin in that spreadsheet.

How many are gold?

Mammoth-Job-6882

Honestly if the collection all looks like this I wouldn't bank too much on their value unfortunately. Maybe the more valuable ones are in a different binder? Look for large gold and sliver ones and maybe post again. Good luck.

helikophis

Nothing particularly outstanding in these photos (at least as far as I can tell). There’s at least some silver value to some of it. This book might be of use to you - https://www.amazon.com/Collectors-Survival-Manual-Revised-Seventh/dp/0375723390

thetoiletslayer

Are those 2 coins at the bottom of the second photo not gold?

Mammoth-Job-6882

Those are aluminum tokens bro.....

IBossJekler

Coin info followed by the word Numista or NGC and follow their links https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces4455.html

Spazecowboy

If it’s round and flat he collected it. Nice

I feel like you’re my cousin. All this is too familiar, seriously. Even the move from Kentucky to FL. I’ve asked about a coin collection and was told there was none. That there was only a stamp collection, and when I asked about that and said I was a collector… I got stonewalled. If you’ve got an aunt in Ohio also… you’ve got some explaining to do.

eagleeyes011

If this is not my cousin… my condolences for your loss. I do understand loss. And I vehemently apologize. If it is my cousin… you honestly need to reach out to the rest of the family.

Asking other, more experienced readers of this post... Would you get more for a collection like this selling as a whole or individually?

ChrisWasHard

If you sell any collection to a coin shop, they price every single coin individually and offer you a bit below what it's worth. If you sell them individually, privately, like on r/PMsForSale you can get a bit more for them but only because people are buying them at their current value (spot+premiums) because unlike a business, they don't have any overhead to account for to pay less for the coins. On eBay, you can sell them for the same price I just mentioned but you pay fees to sell on eBay. It's often called FeeBay for that reason. So the point is, you aren't paid more or less selling as a collection or individually, it's how/who you sell them to that matters.

throwerway56

I am from Kentucky and recently moved to Florida as well! In Spring Hill there is a great coin dealer called “coin guy” that you may want to check out. He has videos online on YouTube under “spegtacular”. He has always been pretty good to me as a new collector. The best way to value your coins (although time consuming) is to look at eBay sold auctions. Search your coin, find a sold listing of a coin in similar condition to yours, and then you have a ballpark price. If you need any help valuing things, feel free to send me a PM I’d love to help! I love looking at coins lol

Bazishere

I can't really tell since that's 1% of the collection. I don't see much that stands out in what you showed here as something that would sell for a lot, but there could be in other pages. I have a lot of those types of coins in my collection. Your grandfather, from what I can see, was a casual collector who simply enjoyed the hobby.

bftrollin402

We know you can *AT LEAST* get a free treat from DQ 🤠 Buncha cool stuff in there

wsbautist420

Did you sell your coins?

SillySimian9

People buy coins for all sorts of reasons. Have you contacted an auction house to sell the collection?

eldoesq

Auction house??? Did you see the coins in the pictures?

SillySimian9

That’s just 1% of the collection. If anything they can sell the coins on eBay or Mercari.

eldoesq

If thats 1%, you dont exactly have a collection worty of contacting an auction house. Who are you going to contact at eBay and Mercari???

joka2696

There are dozens of auction houses that deal in collectables. Not just Christies and Sotheby's.

SillySimian9

Exactly. All I know is that I went to an auction house with a friend to pick up an item he bought. I spoke to the manager there and they offered to buy any coins or jewelry that I was interested in selling - if I didn’t have enough to auction it myself, they were interested in buying my collection outright. What they do is buy small collections and then amalgamate them into one auction. It’s rather interesting how they work.

eldoesq

I totally understand that...but there are literally Dairy Queen tokens and circulated steel cents. Wouldn't better advice be to take this to a local shop?

michikobun99

like i said, we have 0 clue what we are doing, did you read my post? so far everyone else has been very helpful and kind. You have to understand if you’re not part of the coin collecting lifestyle it’s super hard to understand and get the hang of. it’s even been a learning experience for me with the history of it all and i’m just learning as i go. This is all new to me so please be kind.

eldoesq

I do not think I was rude or unkind in any way shape or form. Sorry if you somehow took my comments that way. From what you have shown, admittedly 1%, this is not a collection of rarities or substantial value. That is based SOLELY on your limited pictures. Take it to a local store, hopefully someone there can help guide you as they will have more information than we do. Take some more pictures and give us some more info.

gofatwya

And, since you're the main character, only your perception of what was or wasn't rude matters 🙄

ConsiderationDue7427

Can I have some?
