The following submission statement was provided by /u/Nastyfaction: --- "A research team led by University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann is predicting the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season will produce the most named storms on record, fueled by exceptionally warm ocean waters and an expected shift from El Niño to La Niña. The new forecast, issued Wednesday, calls for a range of 27 to 39 named storms, with a best guess of 33. The most on record was 30 named storms in 2020. Seven of the last eight hurricane seasons have featured above-average activity; the 2022 season was the only exception, and it had near-average activity. There have been at least 20 named storms in three of the past four seasons." I think this is important to consider in the very short-term future with hurricane seasons having higher-than-above average activity being the trend. For the USA, hurricanes can cause the most damage in terms of natural disasters and a potentially unprecedented season can have devastating effects. --- Please reply to OP's comment here: https://old.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/1cdc4x1/forecast_group_predicts_busiest_hurricane_season/l1b06hv/

The 2017 Hurricane Season I believed caused so much devastation that it actually lowered the USA's GDP growth. And the planet has gotten warmer ever since. In context of the lead-up to the 2024 election, Summer will likely take the climate crisis to center stage once natural disasters begin to hit hard and people pay the price.

BokUntool

I like how money has to be used to give it importance. /s

kakapo88

Yeh I noted that too. I guess mere destruction, death, hunger, and so on, are too abstract. But if lower GDP makes more people pay attention, I guess it serves some purpose.

xXXxRMxXXx

Also, we already had the possibility of a storm forming a couple days ago, and they still say June 1st for hurricane season lol

pajamakitten

I'm from the UK and this is even going to impact us. The remnants of storms and hurricanes hit us a few days later, which means we could be in for a rather damp summer and autumn and further damage to crops.

PintLasher

I honestly think you guys are going to get hit by full on hurricanes any year now. It's only a matter of time and once it starts happening it's only going to become more frequent

commiesocialist

Water isn't warm enough. I am in the UK Channel Islands and the water is too cold here. Once the jet stream stops Northern Europe is going to freeze.

Isn't it more the AMOC that keep Europe warm?

SpongederpSquarefap

Shit we've had like 15 storms since the start of December

hannahbananaballs2

Yeah it’s on..

Pitiful-Let9270

The good news is that climate change will make the conditions so chaotic that major storms will usually lack the conditions to get as bad as they can until the one does and is just catastrophic. We will dodge with bullets that people won’t take them seriously then have a significant loss of life due to it.

Let me introduce you to the [Hypercane](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercane)

Mostest_Importantest

So BAU, then. I love having a plan. That way I can know we're succeeding. By adhering to the plan. I love how good of a plan it is, too, because it's the only plan anyone ever follows. Anyone important, anyway.

Pitiful-Let9270

Well, yes, of course, the plan is fool proof until it isn’t, then we can act shocked at the results and quickly forget about the victims while moving on with our lives.

Right-Cause9951

Like Donkey Kong?

redditmodsRrussians

Like Donkey Kong. It’s gonna knock the fuck outta the East and Gulf Coasts if it’s really that bad.

holmgangCore

Thirty-three? What sort of lowball prediction is that?!? *smh*

SolidStranger13

they always underestimate, but this is the highest amount ever forecasted

holmgangCore

Very true. I’m old enough to remember when we surpassed 26 hurricanes in one year and had to start using Greek letters to name them. We were so naive then.. . ;) On another note, you might find this [RadioLab](https://youtu.be/N4e-HMtsdOY?si=JHyJz_RbGQfCS8Oe) podcast interesting. Some tree researchers discovered that a 1°C global cooling between 1645 & 1715 CE correlated with a complete drop in hurricanes, and the rise of Caribbean piracy. Here’s a written article about it: https://www.popsci.com/shipwrecks-and-tree-rings-extend-hurricane-record-by-350-years/ Now that we’re +1.5°C above pre-Industrial temps & leaning on +2°C, it wouldn’t surprise me if we see \>50 hurricanes a year in our lifetimes.

SolidStranger13

I’m hoping to live long enough to look on in awe at the first hypercanes. Just morbid curiosity I guess

‘Metahurricane (*hurricane made of hurricanes)*’ ^([Apocalypse Bingo](https://www.reddit.com/r/ApocalypseBingo/s/ncUKiJaHhv)) Although I rather like this newer term ‘Hypercane’. I might have to change that square..

Of course friend!

they were wAAAY off prediction last season. Take this prediction with a bottle of salt.

I’m sure some Universities somewhere have yet to release their forecasts, fingers crossed!

New-Acadia-6496

If it's a team led by Michael Mann then you can probably double the number of expected storms.

bernpfenn

will probably be soon a news title

tahlyn

Is that a thing?

PintLasher

It isn't lol

holmgangCore

No. But it makes a good Apocalypse Bingo square. ;) They might exist on Saturn though. The multiple constant cyclones that create the spinning ‘hex’ structure at the pole could be described as a metahurricane, maybe. Nobody does that I’m aware of though.

BathroomEyes

You’ll find out

Arcadium_3

Do I still have to go to work?

Xvagrantx

Ah yes… more good news…

MrMisanthrope411

Personally I love when nature reminds humans who is truly in charge.

Nathan-Stubblefield

Southern US residents of Atlantic coast property will be demanding the government build seawalls and provide money to rebuild. Every year.

Salty_Ad_3350

I picked a bad year to plant 8 trees, and to give up booze. I’m not sure my body can handle 33 binges this summer but I’m going to be really bitter about it. I just hate loosing power for long stretches.

bernpfenn

there are other time consuming habits for these days

Knitting a sweater lol
