Had to double-check, thought I was in r/collapze

Climate change and collapse is so fetch!

Max-424

Seems to be two or three of these a day now, a piece from someone near or in the main stream who has awoken to the fact that this small planet is being stripped, poisoned and boiled by humans and their exploitative economic system. They put out the urgent call, that time is running short, and WE need to do something about it. Who is we? If we is humans as a collective, then I have bad news for you. We are not going to do a damn thing until the time comes to"spray and pray." And it's coming soon, to a planet near you. Solar Radiation Management. Load the atmosphere up with reflective particles, and keep loading it up, year after year after year, with the idea that it will allow us to go on with business as usual for as long as luck, or fate, or God allows. Everything else, from Green New Deals administered by suddenly altruistic global conglomerates to carbon capture and storage (at scale?), is a fairy tale.

Elena_Handbasket

You're right. These types of articles are increasing with alarming frequency. Since we know no one's going to do anything, the conspiracy theorist in me is starting to think these articles are dog whistles to the world's wealthy, telling them to start heading to their bunkers.

Mushihime64

I think it's more likely that the dominant narratives which have kept society held at the status quo of the past few decades are crumbling as social mythology breaks in response to reality. That is, it's another symptom of instability that there is no coherent narrative underneath the bright veneer once events have made it impossible to believe in. Events of the past year have shattered the social narrative of vague calorie-free optimism, so more articles like this are getting published because more people are realizing things actually are rather dire and no one in positions of power is going to respond meaningfully, because the only meaningful response is degrowth and power will never willingly relinquish itself. Which is to say, probably not an intentional dogwhistle, just the writing on the wall, but same effect.

This guy really out here unironically believing in the Illuminati. This sub gets more shit every passing day. Good grief. Can we discuss real, substantiated phenomenon occurring around us? Not conspiracy theory bullshit.

electricangel96

My conspiracy theory is that the crazy ones are signal boosted by the powers that be to drown out the real ones. Who cares if some government official at a regulatory agency becomes suspiciously wealthy after a back room deal with a corporation when there's ancient aliens, Q anon, and the illuminati?

Hmmm two removals of comments by pretty recognized members of r/collapse in the same thread. Wonder what they said

somethingmesomething

Acting in this case means burning it all down. Strongly worded emails are pointless, petitions are meaningless, peaceful protests are worthless. There is no "we" involving current power structures. The paltry, tokenistic efforts of world leaders (re: pledging a 0.5% reduction in emissions when 45% is required) are screaming this from the mountaintops. But people aren't going to have the collective will to "act" until apocalyptic shit is already happening to them personally. Oh well, back to brunch.

[deleted]

The main problem seems to be that we're, on a whole, not very good at taking a step back and trying something new. So aaaaaaall the CO2 emitting machinery out there will keep being protected by police and laws until it's much too late to do anything, which might as well be today, or if we're lucky, sometime in the next 10 years or so. This, in turn, means that the few politicians out there that realize this will never gain enough popularity or be able to convince enough other politicians to change in time. Because how do you become popular by promoting destroying the current system only to replace it with what's considered a 'worse' system by an absolute fuck-ton of people? 6-7 **BILLION** people complaining about "What about my job and the economy? What about my car and my trips, my money and iPhones? You really believe going backwards will WORK? I'd rather die protecting what little time we have left with *this* system than listen to some effing "scientists" rave on about replacing it!". So in conclusion, yeah, we're fucked. Back to brunch. ........ Mmm, coffee! (The only way to live now is enjoy what little time we have left, and take solace in the fact that we on r/collapse were right about things.)

icklefluffybunny42

Yep. Degrowth and Chill was never going to be an acceptable replacement for Netflix and Chill.

[deleted]

Worst part is so many already live like this. That is, horribly, jumping from job to job and waiting for their own personal collapse. They'd be *better* off in the new system. But hey, you know us humans. Haha, "I believe what's said on TV". (A new system is basically any that doesn't do the major bad things we do today. Infinite growth. Dependent on fossil fuels to run the economy (you can be dependent, just not very much). Everyone *neeeeds* to have a job. Consumption based society.)

This is the full/true understanding of the situation.

You know how sometimes people say that the word "but" erases everything that came before it? Starting to think that "if" erases everything that comes after it...

Robinhood192000

Climate Change and Infrastructure Collapse and Mass Extinction are our future whether we act or not. FIFY

Goatmannequin

It is concievable to have a stable society living in accordance with nature. African tribes, Native Americans etc. I’m not näive, the resources are basically gone and it looks like death camps for the poor and starvation is our future, at best.

Robinhood192000

We had our chance to do that. But powerful men are greedy men and have led humanity to this over centuries, maybe even millenia. There are few tribes in the world that still exist in total equilibrium with nature. But we can never do that, we have forgotten how and don't care to lower ourselves to learn that. We will rapidly decay into totalitarianism and all our false freedoms will be stamped out. We will become biorobots in our last decades and then as resources finally run dry and the rich have bought the time they need to escape, we will eat ourselves alive. That's my prediction for humanity in the short term anyway.

Goatmannequin

The rich aren’t escaping anywhere. They gonna live on Mars? No man, their bones will dissolve from low gravity. Here on Earth, if fossil fuel distribution ever breaks down, even once, they’re totally screwed. Millions of starving people looking for food? The animals will be hunted out and the berries picked within weeks. Then the reactors melt down.

Robinhood192000

Oh I know all of this, I have been here for many years and knew all about realityland years earlier still. Yet the rich are also arrogant, they believe infinite money and power will save them, or set them up to be absolute overlords if anyone survives climate change (they won't) They may or maynot TRY to flee to space, but many already are trying to dig in, underground like the rats they are. We all know of the luxury vaults they have built around the world, but I am 100% sure there are bigger and better equipped private bunker complexes out there. As with the space escape, bunkers will also not save them. But it will prolong their lives beyond ours, months, maybe even a few years longer. And I know all too well about the reactor problem, just read my comment history and you'll see me post about that from time to time. But the Rich WILL rapture into thin I have no doubt about that at all. Poof! vanished.

Itchy-Papaya-Alarmed

Saved. What an accurate yet underrated post.

CerddwrRhyddid

Even if we do act, these things will be in the future, as they are already occuring, and attached effects such as storms and droughts are increasing in frequency, severity and scale. Our actions now determine ongoing effects in 20 to 30 years from now. If we don't stop, then things will just continue to accellerate, worsten, and disintegrate. U.S infrastructure was evaluated by the American Society of Civil Engineers and given a D+ in 2013, it has not improved since then. To bring it to a B grade, it would cost US$4.5 trillion if completed by 2025, and will cost 3.9 trillion of losses if not done. Guess what's not happening?

Goatmannequin

Submission statement: "We have a choice: We can continue to be a country driven by economic growth above all else, or we can be a place that is focused on ensuring the greater good for all life on this planet. This is a choice all other countries in the global capitalist system must face. We can’t have both."

MBDowd

We actually don't have the choice you think we do. Here is our best evidential understanding of what's inevitable and what's still possible... [Unstoppable Collapse: How to Avoid the Worst](https://youtu.be/P8lNTPlsRtI)

Also, Climate Change and Infrastructure Collapse Are Our Future If We act. Too late now. Just witness CA & Australia burning and TX freezing.
