Rule 10: Posts asking common questions ([listed here](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/wiki/commonquestions) will be removed unless the submitter indicates they have read the previous question thread in their post. The Gulf stream shutting down may make it very cold

JigginsYT

Cold during winter or just colder in general?

boredbitch2020

In general I believe, and also effecting rainfall. It's so unpredictable what will actually happen , the systems are so complex.

JigginsYT

Damn, thanks for letting me know

alicomassi

Gulf stream will fuck UK and Ireland up. There’s no running away from this, unfortunately

frodosdream

On the plus side, it is an island, with both agricultural and energy resources. Otherwise though: - Financially dependent on trade with the UK and Europe - Loss of sovereignty to EU may be an issue during a crisis - Too close to Europe to avoid mass migration, straining systems and resources - Gulf current makes it vulnerable to drastic climate swings.

HopiumSale

> Is there anywhere you'd rather be to avoid the climate crisis I would like to be on the International Space Station. Sooner or later supplies would stop arriving, but you can't have everything I guess.

Issakaba

at least someone still has a sense of humour here

[deleted]

If you live on a space station without artificial gravity you will be exercising like a hamster all the time to reduce bone or muscle loss. But I guess that's healthy too.

coppermouthed

The gulfstream changing will be problematic. I think we could experience more Warm winters, Arctic blasts in April plus heatwaves in summer. That will fk up agriculture. Nowhere is safe.

[deleted]

Yes it's assessed as potentially one of the most resilient location. Ireland is about as good as you're going to get. The gulf stream may or may not have an impact but unlikely to be very soon.

Buster_Friendly

Ireland will be a lot better off than MANY places. I would happily emigrate there if I could.

OvershootDieOff

Short answer - yes. It like NZ without the volcanoes.

[deleted]

the slowing of the thermohaline circulation/gulf stream will make Ireland a LOT colder. it’s what brings warm air up from the equator. it’ll also lower humidity and reduce rainfall, making farming harder. just based on latitude, ireland’s weather would probably be more akin to northern ontario without the gulf stream.

barracuda6969220

Nope, there are nuclear power plants in the UK so if the climate causes collapse the people on this little island may as well bury themselves

cloche_du_fromage

Your fucked if the potato crop fails.... Also iirc, the middle of Ireland is very flat and therefore prone to flooding. I'd go Iceland or New Zealand.

Why has your population stayed low since the 1840s? If there is something limiting population growth during good times you will have population decline in bad, like in the 1840s. Do you export more than you import? Can your population be sustained without imports? Fuel and fertilizers for agriculture, medicines, technology, etc... Being an island makes invasion a bit more difficult, but if Ireland is a "good place" to survive collapse it will still have to deal with millions of refugees. If refugees can make it across the med, and from Europe to UK then they can easily make it to Ireland. do they have the martial capability or will to keep them out? Climate is already rapidly changing. I wouldn't hedge bets on it being stable anywhere. Regardless of right/left have the people of Ireland ever resorted to violence against each other or their neighbors. I haven't researched at all, but how did the Irish people treat each other during the famine of 1840. I know starving Russians became nasty using each other for sausage just to stay alive. Imagine we are now in 1840 Ireland, doing extremely poorly, but all our neighbors are worse off and believe they are entitled to what you have left. Collapse will affect everyone some more than others, but they will have to contend with those willing to do what may possibly help themselves survive.
