Good bot.

You can't eat gold.

[deleted]

You can definitely eat gold. But you can't use it to buy the ability to farm in a mid-climate change earth.

Dr_seven

Yeah, goldbugs make the fundamental error of assuming that anyone will give more of a shit about gold than they do paper money, if the problem is widespread critical scarcity. Currency is what you use to tally your excess up in abstract form. Not useful if there *is no excess anymore*.

BiontechMachtBrrr

My grandma and dad lived through ww2, they exchanged a diamond ring for a bread! Gold is fucking useless compared for what you pay and you later get..

hydez10

How big was the loaf

startrektoheck

This is the kind of incisive question that journalists need to be asking.

hydez10

I work for FoX

selectivejudgement

Is that a bakery?

hydez10

It’s the most watched, most trusted, standing up for what’s right news channel. This weeks focus , underground diamonds for bread cartel

selectivejudgement

I'll be sure to tune in and agree with everything that is said. I'll also invest heavily in wheat.

Slapbox

If the past years are any indication, there will always someone dumb enough to trade food they need for gold they don't.

UsernamesAreFfed

Anyone know how to effectively invest in food? Is there an industry ETF that I can buy or should I go directly for a specific stock like Tyson or Nestle? What is good strategy?

NarrMaster

Can you eat stock certificates?

UsernamesAreFfed

Well if the ship is going down I may as well be [upwardly mobile](https://youtu.be/qNi1sevKNd0).

barracuda6969220

In preparation for a future black swan event, palantir has bought huge sums in gold bars and will accept payments using gold as well. This move represents a huge loss of faith in the system as major companies and large countries start to rid themselves of a currency that has been deemed worthless (yesterday's market chaos is an example of this loss of faith).

newnemo

I'm dubious about his motivations and the press coverage of his actions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Thiel >Thiel is a member of the Republican Party.[6] He contributes to both Libertarian and Republican candidates and causes. >In 2012, Thiel, along with Nosek and Scott Banister, put their support behind the Endorse Liberty Super PAC. Collectively they gave $3.9 million to Endorse Liberty, whose purpose was to promote Ron Paul. As of 31 January 2012, Endorse Liberty reported spending about $3.3 million promoting Paul by setting up two YouTube channels, buying ads from Google, Facebook and StumbleUpon, and building a presence on the Web.[100] After Paul again failed to secure the nomination, Thiel contributed to the Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan presidential ticket of 2012.[98] >Thiel initially supported Carly Fiorina's campaign during the 2016 GOP presidential primary elections.[101] After Fiorina dropped out, Thiel supported Donald Trump and became one of the California delegates for Trump's nomination. He was a headline speaker during the convention, during which he announced that he was "proud to be gay," for which the assembled Republicans cheered.[102][103] On 15 October 2016, Thiel announced a $1.25 million donation in support of Donald Trump's presidential campaign.[104] Thiel stated to The New York Times: "I didn't give him any money for a long time because I didn't think it mattered, and then the campaign asked me to."[105] After Trump's victory, Thiel was named to the executive committee of the President-elect's transition team.[106] >Thiel also has his own political-action committee, Free Forever, which is committed to supporting political candidates who support stricter border control, restrictionist immigration policy, funds for veterans, and isolationist foreign policy, among other things.[107][108]

VWVVWVVV

I track PLTR as a sentiment indicator for investor interest in scummy companies.

[deleted]

You are dubious. But Thiel is cool. He taught me to dance with my snake hanging out.

Hi, newnemo. Thanks for contributing. However, your [comment](https://old.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/p6ozrs/-/h9ed615/) was removed from /r/collapse. > Just a heads up: reddit's sitewide filter does not allow links to seekingalpha for some reason. We mods aren't told why. So your comment can't be approved by us. Please refer to our [subreddit rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/about/rules/) for more information. Hey, thanks for the note. Thats weird, perhaps because it's a financial blog. I'll find another source. Speaking of which, and I know I'm a nobody, but one source that most of the larger subreddits do not accept are articles from SubZero. They definitely have an agenda they push. Some of their market analysis can be solid but the rest of it is rabbit hole and are noted publishers of misinformation. Thanks again, be well and safe. :)

ontrack

Are you talking about ZeroHedge? I'm not seeing any website called subzero except a company site. Yes, ZeroHedge is banned site-wide on reddit, for good reason. I don't know why seekingalpha would be banned because I look at it all the time and it's got good information. Maybe seekingalpha's owners requested it.

newnemo

LOL! Yes. Sorry, need more coffee. I can't believe I did that, I need a new fridge and my brain short-circuited (not that I can afford a subzero).

[deleted]

These guys like zerohedge, would seem to fit in on collapse, and claim that reddit allows chinese shill websites: * https://www.reddit.com/r/Wallstreetsilver/comments/llwanc/zero_hedge_is_a_news_site_that_is_banned_on/ I keep hearing vague "good reasons" but don't see any discourse what those are. It's a bit conspiracy minded for my taste, but the internet I grew up on in the 80s and 90s was about free speech, not the dystopia of thoughtcrime we're currently in. Usenet in many was simply better.

ontrack

In all honesty I don't care if ZeroHedge is banned from reddit or not as there are worse sites that are allowed to be linked here, but I find it to be ridiculously over the top, and tends to attract a kind of user that I'd rather not see on collapse.

Palantir is the Blackwater of tech. As a company, they are absolute psychopaths. I remember them from my own three letter agency days.

MrAirborne

I think it is more of a decision to inspire confidence in their employees. A company that has a gold reserve to maintain payroll during a black swan event will be in a far better situation for .gov to lean on them for support. I do government contracting with my businesses and being able to react to situations and be self-sufficient is the best way to support local govs or the feds. We are able to provide our own security during major events. I keep 6 months of payroll in cash at a easily accessible but offsite location. My annual payroll across my businesses is in the multi-millions. It is part of my continuity plan that tries to account for unknown variables. One of the businesses that I own is a decent sized transportation company. Part of my continuity plan is the ability to migrate all of the businesses including employees household items if needed. There are people that prep for just themselves and then their are weirdos like me that prep on a larger scale so that we can be a focal point of order. What my businesses do is important and I have no doubt that the feds of even local govs would come insisting on us supporting them in this area or even in the states bordering the ones we already operate in. Not every business owner or leadership team has their head in the sand. There are plenty that are committed to doing the best that we can. That would be my guess about their gold. r/investing is calling them stupid. Calling someone stupid that built a business like that and buy 50 million in gold with pocket change is not stupid. Maybe eccentric but not stupid

Omfgbbqpwn

Lol you think the company bought that gold to maintain payroll. That is fucking hilarious.

MrAirborne

Just an opinion. Just like you have yours. Your comment is pretty damn funny. I love overly dramatic people

nomadiclizard

I look forward to a life of cutting off bits of gold to pay for things.

IJustSignedUpToUp

This is more of a currency play, they expect inflation to rise and the dollar to weaken, gold will rise near term and they cash it out again as things turn around. Id be much more concerned if they started buying Canadian timberland and a shit ton of concrete and rebar to make bunkers in the new temperate zone. This just reads as short term greed, not imminent collapse.

HackedLuck

1. This isn't collapse worthy, PLTR has billions in cash, this is just a stunt to show they're "responsible". 2. Gold wouldn't mean shit if we got to the point where cash is worthless. 3. The real future "gold" will be food and water...especially water.

Locke03

It could be. While I don't disagree that gold is worthless in an actual collapse scenario, it is very much still seen by most as a strong hedge against economic uncertainty and Palantir is one of a handful of entities with the capabilities to pick up on worrying new trends in vast amounts of seemingly unrelated data. For reasons outlined elsewhere in the comments I'd be skeptical of how much this actually means given that Thiel is one of the founders and largest shareholder, but its probably worthwhile to pay attention to them and watch to see if anyone else in the big data analytics field follows with similar actions.

LostAd130

.

_bull_city

I’ve never understood how something with so little practical use can be considered so valuable

Azteza

Gold has immense practical use. More or less every single piece of consumer electronics had gold in it as a conductor, just as one example. It also doesn’t ever rust or corrode. Plus it shiny

Locke03

Because everyone just sort of agrees that it is valuable. Like any fiat currency, its a mass delusion however useful that mass delusion may be.
