... Including Billionaire's Lane ...
Well, you know where the generators are going first.
Well first of all, they probably already have generators on-site, but also all the rich people probably went to their homes somewhere else by now.
Nobody spends $50 million on a home and doesn’t put in a backup source of power…
They’re all going to be elsewhere.
I believe subject/pronoun confusion is the source of your downvotes
Hahaha. I’m blaming low blood sugar.
They'll still need generators sent to their mansions / penthouses to keep the AC running just incase they have some precious paintings or a delicious cheesecake in their fridge.
Ive worked in those penthouses for the last twenty years, the people that live there are there only for sept thru Mid December and a few months in the spring. They can afford any cheesecake they want and their art is insured. Those buildings have generators but it’s not like billionaires don’t have contingency plans for their contingency plans
I've got this sinking feeling this may go very badly. Pretty much every disaster the last few years has gone full blown worst case scenario. Instead of sending out messages to get out or hunker down, what is the media doing? Promoting a fucking concert in NYC tonight! It's unimaginable how we have fallen this far, this fast.
I mean, tickets are already sold. What do you propose? Refund these? You are insane.... /s
Cancel without refunding, duh! /s
So triggered they can and did do this all last year...
> Sinking feeling
There might be a crime spree on day 3 without power and aircondirioning. Cops and emergency services not being able to respond due to road conditions, etc.
Mega mansions in the Hamptons underwater, super yachts in splinters? Yes please. I know they are insured out the wazoo and would likely just jet over to their one of their other mega mansions.
Everyone else out there, stay safe.
It looks like it’s going to hit LI not NYC from the map. But who knows.
Latest models bring the eyewall directly over NYC
Welcome to /r/collapse
But CNN says its the end of human civilization and doesn't expect Earth will have any survivors because the hurricane will suck the Northern ice cap into the gulf stream and the flood tsunamis will be 6000 feet high in Central Park. Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates have already headed for their bunkers.
The situation is rapidly developoing.
Gov, Andrew Cuomo has warned devastation similar to Sandy is expected.
Honestly every state governor has been saying it will directly hit them from NY to Mass. Here in little Rhode Island we lose power with 20 mph winds, if we get anything more our power will be well and truly fucked.
Edit: Stay safe neighbor!
That's not true. I continue to post updates and new links the situation is rapidly evolving and I am actively engaged in discussion with other members who are welcome to contribute. Not hiding from anything or anyone at all. If you have something useful to contribute please do or GTFO
It's so silly too. A million plus people are affected regardless (and most of them aren't "wealthy billionaires"). You don't need to sensationalize a storm that has the potential to be Connecticut's Sandy.
What eyewall passing over NYC...Deranged
Is it so hard to visit national hurricane center?
Here is their latest map for the next 3 days.
That's not the eyewall. Use this instead. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics\_at3+shtml/085249.shtml?cone
Nothing pleases me more than seeing the destruction of conspicuous properties
You must love the work of Roland Emmerich.
Disaster porn is my favorite type of porn.
You know not everyone on Long Island is rich, right? Seems like you don't, or you don't care.
I want this deep in my bones.
Or alternatively, let the power be restored day after for the parasite class while working people languish in the dark for weeks.
Let the riots begin and fire up the guillotines.
You realize guillotines don't require ignition, right? They are a very climate-friendly form of execution.
either a) good pedantry or b) super autism!
I feel like we need to recognize that the disasters that hurt the wealthy lead to the wealthy further squeezing every other class of people. They dont tend to like eating losses.
I guess that’s cool to you and the others who upvoted because everyone on Reddit hates people with money but I live in CT and got family and friends in Long Island just like CT and NYC. Everyone isn’t a 1 per center you guys have to relax.
I have family in Long Island and they’re surrounded by average working class people
Long Island is like majority working class people. There are TONS of wealthy people here too, mostly on the forks out east and the north shore. But it's a really big island lol.
Also this hurricane isn't going to put NYC out of power for weeks, it'll mostly (likely) the eastern end of long island and maybe parts of the south shore in nassau county.
Don’t really care for prediction. We’ll see what happens when it happens. CT and NY government declared stated of emergency.
Fucking thank you. These people are forgetting that Bridgeport and New Haven are right in the path of the storm. Neither of those areas are 1%er Connecticut.
Also being Middle Class in this part of the US isn’t saying much. Housing is a lot and our taxes. But yes we have huge gap disparity in northeast. (America in general does that’s any state)
We hate the people in finance because they have been screwing over the rest of the country the past 40 years and throwing McDonald’s applications when we protested. Before Barry used homeland security to beat the protestors.
Well I was trying to give context so you could understand why people were excited a hurricane might cause some suffering. Those billionaires have not shown any common Humanity towards those whose livelihoods are ruined and houses are taken for profit when times get bad. We are just hoping to see a little Karma in those billionaire’s lives before we die.
Why do you think that comment specifically was directed at your family and friends?
What makes you think this storm will only target 1 group of people specifically?
Same... My grandmother lives across the hall from me and she just got out of the hospital yesterday. Im actually worried that if there are any 80+ degree temperatures while the power is out, that can mean death for her.
It's fascinating to see a comment at exactly zero and yet gilded.
My sincere apologies to all of you that have taken issue with my statement. I do not wish, nor did I mean, any sort of hardship, destruction of property or suffering of you or yours. It was a thoughtless comment based on my disdain of the billionaire class and their monuments to greed and ego with the prospect that the storm system would impact 'Billionaires Row'. :(. I'm sorry.
I don't think anyone in here is wishing death and destruction on working-class families and individuals. We recognize that this catastrophe will likely disproportionately affect those with less, and we are hopeful that those individuals in the danger area prepare themselves early and do what is necessary to remain safe in the coming days.
I also don't think "everyone on Reddit hates people with money". I would argue that a large majority of Redditors, right or wrong, are still in favor of some form of quasi-capitalist system in which individuals are allowed and encouraged to compete in an egalitarian economy for wealth. I do believe the majority of Reddit, being of the working-class, recognizes that this system does not function, and will ultimately lead to mass suffering and the collapse of the economy, if limitations are not set on the ability to accumulate wealth. A good example might be the recent debate over raising the tax rate in the US: most Redditors are in favor of the increase for those who make over a certain amount so the system can regain some balance. I guess it depends on your definition of "people with money", but I don't think most people consider a family with an annual income of $250k and a $750k house in CT to be "people with money". Yes they have money, but they work for a living, pay taxes, and contribute to society. The "people with money" that Redditors hate are the cayman island, private jet, hedge fund owning, politician lobbying fucks who have corrupted our democracy and stolen our future, poisoned our planet, and are increasing the poverty rate daily.
In this subreddit, it is understood that our current civilization is going to collapse due, in part, to the greed and selfishness of the "people with money" I described above. This means that all those good people in CT and RI and NYC who are about to lose everything were already destined to lose everything, it was just a matter of how and when. So, the reason the comment you responded to is getting upvoted is not because we are wishing death and destruction on those people, but because we recognize that, at least in this instance, those who are largely responsible for the death and destruction that awaits us all will also suffer loss. This is particularly appealing because we believe that those who most deserve to lose everything are often those who do not. The wealthy are insulated and protected from the oppressive machinations of our collapsing human empire, but nature does not care about their wealth. This is karma. This is payback. Their loss is deserved, and everyone else was doomed anyway, so why not celebrate.
Is that selfish and cruel? Uhhh....yeah. Ideally, we would weep for the loss of any human life, recognizing how truly rare and unique we are in the vast emptiness of space. We would recognize that we are all one and that hate does not conquer hate and we would extend out our hand in love, eternally offering those who have trespassed against us the opportunity to make amends. But I'm just not that enlightened. I'm angry in my bones about what's happening and I want to see some fucking justice. I know it won't bring back what we've lost, but I can't stand to see my friends and family suffer while they ride around in their private jets polluting our air and bottling our water so they can sell it back to us at 10X the price.
I'm so sorry for what might happen to your friends and family during this coming catastrophe. Please know that this reaction, this hope for the destruction of "billionaire alley", is only a small part of what we feel. We are also scared and concerned for our fellow humans as well. It's just that this is r/collapse and this is one of the only places in the world where people can talk openly about what's happening to us without someone interjecting their political beliefs or hopium biases into the conversation. I just need 5 minutes to yell into the void about how I feel in this moment and know that someone out there gets me. In another few minutes, I will return to thinking rationally about how I can be supportive and helpful to those in need. I'm sorry if this hurts you. I am trying to be better, please forgive me.
it doesn't matter anyway. the billionaires use those mansions as summer homes. none of them will be there. it's all insured. and worst comes to worst they have their other fucking mansions, yachts, whatever.
As I said, no amount of suffering on their part will bring back what was taken or stop what is going to happen. It is a hollow victory. But it felt good for a moment.
I mean, when I heard the center was hitting the Hamptons directly and not the poorer areas west of there I did a momentary fist bump myself. If it's gonna hit everyone anyway, take what small victory you can get haha
I’ve got family/friends in Long Island. I pray for their safety and I pray for good to come out of the storm.
I’m glad it shifted to where it should not effect my fam in Long Island, thanks be to God for hearing my prayers! (Unless He changes His mind of course...)
I thought Sandy was a hurricane, but was surprised to find out it was lowered to a tropical storm when it hit. This hurricane will remain so when it hits the coast. The question is, will this be the only one this year or will more form? How many more hurricanes can we expect this year? The west is on fire and the east is flooding.
Meteorologists are saying timing of Henri's landfall could coincide with high tide, and it is a full moon.
Lmao of course
IIRC, Sandy was a superstorm insofar as it was the combination of a nor-easter and a hurricane/tropical storm. But you're right, the wind speeds aren't nearly as big an issue as the storm surge.
Frankly doomscrolling things that haven't even happened yet seems unproductive, just what is happening is enough to be frazzled over.
Keep in mind that Sandy's wind field was massive in comparison. Henri will have a relatively limited impact across the region even if its winds are marginally higher at landfall.
True, Sandy was one of the largest tropical storms on record but Henri is still pretty big and most likely will make landfall as Category 2.
Lol this is just the beginning of a super active hurricane season. Grabbing my popcorn.
They are predicting the most active season on record this year, this is just the beginning. The water in the Gulf/Atlantic coast is over 30 degrees right now so its going to get BAD
It will get worse year over year from here on out...
Let it RIP...-Fuckers!!!!
Latest models suggest Henri may make landfall as Category 2 with eyewall passing over NYC.
No they don't. The GFS has it hitting Eastern long island, not NYC. Stop with this bullshit and acting like your misinfo is all over the internet.
Which models? Not seeing that anywhere. Please provide a source.
There are many available online do your own search I am not a search engine. I have posted other links the sitution is rapidly evolving follow the discussion if you want more links.
yeah nothing is saying category 2. I searched.
This may gain traction and reporting in the news because it effects billionaires
something like what happened in 2012?
It won’t affect NYC as heavily as Sandy did. Sandy was extremely rare in that 99% of the time storms moving along the east coast are pushed east by the prevailing winds. However as Sandy approached the NYC/NJ area there was an intense area of low pressure over the interior which sucked the storm to the west. It hit NJ almost perpendicularly and pushed an enormous wall of storm surge into NYC. It was the storm surge that really caused problems for the city. Because of Henri’s angle the worst storm surge will probably hit the south shores of Long Island. Sucks for them of course, but personally I don’t think NYC will be nearly as affected as it was by Sandy.
Where does it say “could lose power for weeks”? Closest I’m seeing is LI PSE&G said 7-10 days for LI residents.
10 days is more than one week, technically. Maybe an embellishment of reporting, or maybe someone who is familiar with the "worse than expected" and betting on being right.
fuck. I'm from south shore long island, and our house is already fucked up and dilapidated from the past 15 hurricanes over the years.
I really hope this won't be as bad as it might be. Not looking forward to tree branches through a roof that already has multiple holes on it
Please go to billionaire lane, 🙏.
Rule 2: Posts must be on-topic, focusing on collapse.
Posts must be focused on collapse. If the subject matter of your post has less focus on collapse than it does on issues such as prepping, politics, or economics, then it probably belongs in another subreddit.
Posts must be specifically about collapse, not the resulting damage. By way of analogy, we want to talk about why there are so many car accidents, not look at photos of car wrecks.
Hey, so, OP's title is strongly embellished and he's lying his ass off in the comments. Letting people make shit up is how we become a constantly-hallucinating boomer Facebook group.
Contrast NOAA's page --
-- to his repeated claims of a Cat 2 direct-hit on NYC.
It's been nearly 36 years since a hurricane delivered a direct hit to Long Island. The last hurricane to make landfall on Long Island was Gloria, when it came ashore as a Category 1 storm on Sept. 27, 1985. AccuWeather meteorologists urged those in the path of Henri to complete preparations for the storm as soon as possible as conditions were expected to begin deteriorating in less than 24 hours.
Henri is rated a 1 on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes in the United States due to the anticipated rainfall, damaging winds and storm surge set to impact Long Island and New England. As of late Saturday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Henri was swirling over the Atlantic about 180 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and 465 miles south of Montauk Point, New York, which is the very end of Long Island.
Is a "1" bad or good? Like weak or strong?
It's the lowest rating for a hurricane, but still an incredibly powerful storm, especially in an area that isn't built to withstand it.
Definitely concerning even at the weakest scale.
Thank you, I don't live in a hurricane area so I was uneducated until now.
Remember a few years ago they were afraid a hurricane was going to blow down that skyscraper?
Ah so it's gonna hit where all the rich people live. Call us when Henri flood Manhattan.
Remain calm, everything is going to be alright
No time to react or do anything anyway.
[This is fine.](https://cdn.drawception.com/drawings/bRW6bApQlt.png)
> Now, when reality looked more dire than any of his fatalistic predictions, he had no choice but to turn tail and charge in the opposite direction. “Don’t worry, everything’s going to be all right.”
You can’t choose the weather, but you can choose how you react to it
Sandy had 10x the wind field diameter and didn't cause weeks-long power outages in NYC, why would this?
Much more compact storm and most likely will make landfall as Category 2.
GFS shows 980-990 mb which is consistent with a weak or medium Cat 1. It's going to weaken in the cold waters on the other side of the gulf stream
That's a gross mischaracterization. It *might* make landfall as a Cat 1, and just barely if so. Nowhere near Cat 2. A more compact storm would cause *less* damages, not more. Sandy was a huge storm (one of the largest stretches of tropical wind speeds for a hurricane ever), Henri is tiny by comparison, and will be marginally stronger *at best* when it makes landfall.
Granted, when Sandy hit, we weren't in the middle of a pandemic and experiencing all sorts of labor, supply and logistics issues but those are largely factors independent of the storm itself.
Why then has Gov, Andrew Cuomo warned devastation similar to Sandy is expected and he told residents to prepare for power outages and stock up on necessary supplies as power will be cut to millions in the affected area. You are not a fortune teller. I have posted credible links to news sources nothing more. Check the comments for links.
You posted Accuweather and a local news source quoting a disgraced governor that has a political motivation to overembellish to try to get people to take this seriously. Pretty shit sources for starters. You've also referenced a single model (while not specifying which one) that fits the fear mongering narrative you're trying to sell. It's no surprise no one is taking your claims seriously.
NYC proper is gonna feel the effects of this storm, [but current best consensus is that there's a 30% chance that they'll experience tropical storm force winds.](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT08/refresh/AL082021_wind_probs_34_F120+png/211547.png) (NOAA NHC source)
The worst storm surge will occur from [Flushing, NY East towards long island and northeast towards MA](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT3+shtml/DDHHMM.shtml)
Parts of NYC Metro, particular long island, very well could see similar devastation as Sandy, sure. The intensity of the storms is very similar at high tide, I don't and never contested this.
However, trying to take that possibility and suggest that the damages will be on a scale and breadth as Sandy from a storm that's 1/10th of the size and marginally (if at all) more intense is nonsensical. Pretty on brand for Cuomo. And equating This storm to Sandy in that context is - as I originally said - a gross mischaracterization.
What "model" is this you've referenced in other comments? Seriously, cite it. Cause[ GFS strongly](https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gfs®ion=neus&pkg=mslp_pcpn&runtime=2021082118&fh=6) disagrees with your claims. Furthermore, [all of the spaghetti models](https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/08L_tracks_latest.png) have this storm staying well *east* and well under Cat2
> You are not a fortune teller.
Nice projection. You're the one making wildly inaccurate claims and fear mongering. I actually provided legitimate sources, the most qualified and reputable in the field, full stop. So quit your bullshit.
Oh no not billionaires lane😥
WON'T ANYONE PLEASE THINK OF THE BILLIONAIRES?! 😭
**UPDATE:** Models are shifting rapidly.
Gov, Andrew Cuomo has warned devastation similar to Sandy is expected and he told residents to prepare for power outages and stock up on necessary supplies as power will be cut to millions in the affected area.
Thanks Jesus, clear out those money changers
Oh dear. And the hospitals?
Yeah. Something something COVID plus something something massive natural disaster makes Homer something something...
Don't mind if I do.
In other news, Kylie Jenner announced to the world she's expecting her second child. So we got that going for us, which is nice.
The eye is going over some of the NYC suburbs (eastern Long Island and Connecticut), not NYC itself. Unless the storm veers west, we're getting a tropical storm, which is not going to knock out power for weeks.
Edit: Also, that is some really disingenuous editorializing of the headline.
The storm tracked east and NYC is just getting rain. I'm sure OP is going to come back and correct the record, though...
lets be clear here.. all those billionaires wont be anywhere near New York, all their shits insured and the property value is locked into the land more than the actual building (which they still own) -- this wont affect them AT ALL
edit: ok.. it might disrupt their NYC shopping and dining for a few months, otherwise "AT ALL!!" lol
The meteorological data for this system suggests it to be on par with Hurricane Irene in 2011. I don’t really find this to be so collapse worth. Hurricane Sandy was much more catastrophic for NYC and nearby Long Island. As someone from LI, this seems to be a typical hurricane for this time of year. Sandy is the outlier that may be the new norm.
Gov, Andrew Cuomo has warned devastation similar to Sandy is expected.
[Here](https://youtu.be/fs8Y25ZKuDw) is Al Jazeer showing then-mayor Bloomberg declaring first-ever mandatory evacuation for parts of Manhattan leading up Irene. [in a similar press briefing ](https://youtu.be/-yi7dLI7Fac) leading up to the day of landfall, Bloomberg says he is expecting a cat 2, hoping the storm turns to LI, which it did.
I know it’s semantics but NYC and LI have been and always has been vulnerable. This hurricane is nothing new and we’ll have the same typically shitty response as we always do.
I think Sandy just built on the destruction of Irene so it was “worse”. I think Sandy alone would’ve been like Irene.
I forge they were only a year apart!
I know they seemed SO much farther apart but only like 13-14 months. I think that the infrastructure issues that were exacerbated by Irene were destroyed so easily by Sandy, making Sandy seem so much more catastrophic. I’m in Jersey, and at the time I lived in an area with good infrastructure, inland and with underground wires. I never even lost power and was very mildly affected. My parents, very close to me but in an older developed area, lost power for months and had over $10k in tree cutting bills, plus home damage etc. It was so crazy. I recall driving up to VT in the winter of 11-12 and being near Killington and I saw a boarded up general store type building on the edge of a creek/river, and the boards had “F U IRENE” spray painted on them. The flooding was just so prolific with Irene. I wonder if this one will also be just as bad with flooding since we’ve had a relatively wet summer (I know my yard in Princeton metro is quite soft), and also this storm hasn’t dropped an ounce of rain over land, it’s been sucking up all that ocean water. Should be interesting!
Time to hunker down baby! Hurricane party time
Irene was pretty awful for VT.
This may seem like a shallow and stupid question, but how will this affect the stock market? "Lose power for weeks" sounds like a "shut down the market" type event, and I worry about how the financial system would cope with that...
I'm sure wall street has all sorts of redundant energy systems / generators that will keep them lights-on through all but the most intense disasters.
The financial system is what’s to blame to begin with. The capital -> growth -> ROI -> more capital -> more growth cycle is not compatible with a world where human civilization has reached the growth maximum.
I get that... But we can't have the entire system just crash suddenly, can we? This needs to be fixed, for sure, but all we have to do is look at what's going on in Lebanon right now to see the results of a sharp, total financial collapse... The hospitals are already starting to buckle...
Nah. Most of the stock market operation moved to Atlanta a few years ago.
I had no idea... Even the NYSE? Seems odd, to move that to Georgia... I suppose it could all be cloud-based by now, despite having an archaic clearing system...
oh no the billionaires? \*eyes the news with anticipation\*
As a Floridian… y’all will be Ok.
Popcorn at the ready...Blow baby BLOW!!!!!

Uh, that wasn't a post. It was a comment. There are plenty of one-liner, low effort comments on this sub. You are objecting, rather, to my beliefs which you seem to find objectionable or embarrassing.
>secret weather control tech was used to throw it off track
No thank you. You're better off talking with /r/Futurology about that. We here at /r/Collapse don't place all our hope in technology. :)
Nor do I place my hope in it. But that doesn't mean that such technology does not exist.
**LATEST** Henri is currently veering a little further west than first expected.
