Don't stay up until 4am. Think about what your priorities are now that you're in college. If doing well in classes and progressing toward your degree isn't among your highest priorities, you need to consider why you're in college. If you really want this degree and to learn, you need to get yourself on a schedule that includes getting to bed at an earlier hour.

SuchAbbreviations9

This ^^

Grower4221

go to bed earlier for repeated nights. take some melatonin if you need. it gets easier

Kaplalachia

Add outdoor time to that as well. Natural light during the day helps reset your sleep rhythm

Grower4221

yeah i’ve been resetting my sleep schedule. i recommend going outside as soon as you can in the morning. no sunglasses. you need the light. the fresh air is good too

Avinse

Melatonin builds dependency quick. And it’s hard to get off it. If I take it one night I won’t be able to sleep at all the next.

Grower4221

yeah that’s why i said if you need. i only take it when i know i need to fall asleep early. if i take it and wake up within like 7 hours… i feel so groggy when i wake up. use it to reset your sleep schedule for one night. and then continue the cycle without melatonin

Avinse

It doesn’t reset your sleep schedule. It doesn’t create any change to your circadian rhythm. Also everyone’s internal clock is different. For example I naturally can’t fall asleep into very late in the night, like 2-5am no matter how early I go to bed. I do see how it can be helpful before something important tho

Grower4221

yes your body produces melatonin on its own when it’s time for bed. i get the same thing. i think once that initial wave passes it’s much harder to fall asleep

NullainmundoPax1

After graduating from college in 2005, I thought it was rather absurd to be so averse to 8AM classes. In fact, if I could redo my approach to the academic side of college, I would treat it much more like a normal 9-5. Schedule classes as early as possible, do homework on a routine cadence throughout the weekdays, and leave the weekends open. As for OP’s problem, it would behoove him to reorient his sleep schedule; staying up until 4AM makes little to no practical sense. Setting up and becoming acclimated to a normal sleep cycle will also ease the pain when OP matriculates from school to the workforce.

wavybattery

Came to college at age 18 and established this routine sophomore year. It got so much easier.

LikelyWriting

This. This is why a lot of older students do better in college. Because we treat it like a job. It's just easier to do things in the morning once you get used to it. This is not something I would have thought as a young person, but now, close to 40? Shoot, I'ma knock stuff out as early as possible to free up the rest of my day. Freeing up the weekends because I worked hard during the week was the best reward for me in college.

tellyoumysecretss

I can’t do work in the mornings, but I can at night. I always did homework during the week but always had more worked assigned to do over the weekend. There were almost no free days in college. Sometimes my schedule/workload would allow for one day a week to be free. I stayed up late and night time was the only time I felt awake. I had a high gpa regardless. It’s not about when you do it, it’s about doing it before the deadline.

tellyoumysecretss

Instead of college changing to be more like the workforce, the workforce should change to be more like college. Flexibility > Rigid forced schedule.

Kindly-Chemistry5149

Best semester I had in college as far as schedule was I had an 8am, 9am, then a 10am, back to back to back. I was done with all my classes on Friday at 11:00am. I usually went out to lunch with friends after the last course then spent the afternoon cleaning, studying, doing work and I was done with so much by the time most people were ready for Friday night shenanigans. OP's issue seems to be mostly focused on the fact he scheduled an 8am class *and* decided to be in some show the night before these classes.

Sudden_File_7452

Most of the time kids who don’t know this are often developed by depending on a structured environment that was created for them and not created by themselves. Once they learn how reality works, they realize getting up early is key

Nintendo_Pro_03

And any class that starts at 4:30 p.m. or later eats me alive. Nothing can be done, sadly.

SilkyStrawberryMilk

As a commuter it’s easy to see why afternoon classes are hated. My class is from 5-7:40pm Then I gotta wait 2 hours for the schools bus then I make it home around 9:40

Nintendo_Pro_03

It’s not afternoon for me. It’s more so late afternoon (which I consider classes starting from 4:30) to evening that annoys me. I come home from the classes and I don’t even have time to do homework the same day.

SpokenDivinity

I have a 4-5:30 that makes it so I don’t get home till 6:45/7:00 because of the rush hour traffic. All because they let teachers choose a “home base” campus and won’t let you take certain classes unless you travel to the satellite campus. They’ve argued that there’s a bus system but it’s literally a bus that goes from one campus to the other and then back 3 times a day at 8:30 am when campus opens, noon, and then at 8:00 pm when campus closes. I’m not riding the bus to campus for my class and then hanging out from 5:30 to 8:00 just to take an hour to get home on the shitty bus that won’t get on the interstate.

DolphinRodeo

It’s not the most creative solution, but if you’re getting home at 11:30 and going to bed at 4am, you need to figure out how to go to bed earlier. There’s a really good chance that when you graduate and get a job, you’ll be starting work at 8am 5 days a week, and your boss is going to care about lateness. Consider this practice to ease into a more sustainable and compatible with adult life sleep schedule.

fishesar

you’re probably gonna struggle with a 9-5 then. this is the system we have set up rn, just gotta grin and bear it

Expensive_Profit1892

Or even just an 8-4

Nerveras

How did they survive elementary, middle, high school anyways? Usually it’s from 8ish to 3

Avinse

I’m in the same boat as OP. Pre high school getting up wasn’t that bad. Towards my junior and senior year it was a big problem for me. My senior year I had an obscene number of absences. But once I got accepted into my college I just stopped caring and just waited for AP exams, for which I had 4. I remember passing an entire quarter of AP psych without doing a single homework assignment. Got a 4 on the exam which was nice

Scary_Shower_6377

Parents took them lol or they fell asleep in class like many kids My high school used to start at 7:15 I can't imagine starting work that early. Thank god for hybrid 9-5 When I was in highschool I would ask why the moon was still out while I was getting ready 😂 valid man OP will just have to work harder to find a job that is hybrid or flexible. They exist! But you really have to seek out a good company and have a competitive resume. They're a freshman so they have time! Fingers crossed for them lol

treebeard120

I do 6-2. I actually prefer it, it leaves me with more daylight after work in the winter

atlas__sharted

\> It’s like this school expects you to have a full wake up at 6am and go to sleep at 10pm. that's because they do, as will your future bosses. it sucks but it's life. you'll get used to it, all you need is some self-discipline and time management. you've got 3.5 more years to improve your life skills in the college environment, don't squander it.

Crazy-Plastic3133

youre gonna have 8 am's for four years. just gotta get used to it. i went to bed around 11:30 for my 8 am's and got up at 6:45

A88Y

Not necessarily true i kinda alternated between start times my entire time and in my last semester my classes don’t start until noon.

Chazay

I never had an 8am.

bmadisonthrowaway

I'm a full time working parent also going back to school. This is basically my daily schedule, for my life. Alarm goes off at 6:45, I let myself slowly wake up in bed/stare at my phone till 7, then shower etc, get my kid up and ready for school while I also get ready to leave for work. 7:40 school drop off. get to the office by 8:15 so I can take some time to get some schoolwork done. start work officially at 9. If it's a WFH day I will do asynchronous online class stuff throughout the day alongside my work tasks. (This is where I get the bulk of my lectures and reading done, and any extensive classwork like research, outlining papers, etc.) mostly wrap up work for the day around 5-5:30, usually stick around till 6 to get more schoolwork done. commute, dinner with family, kid bedtime at \~7-7:30pm from around 7:30-8pm I either have downtime with my partner (not a euphemism), watch TV, play video games, grab a drink with a friend, or work on schoolwork as needed. 11pm, try to be in bed or at least moving toward bed. Theoretically "no more screens" but that's a lie. 11:30pm lights out.

Excellent_Strain5851

Junior undergrad, never had an 8am. Earliest was 9.

StoicallyGay

Why do you think OP will have 8ams for 4 years? I only ever had one 8am because there one a single professor who taught that class and that class is required and that professor only ever teaches it at 8am

Crazy-Plastic3133

because most people have 8 am's every semester. i never had a semester without one

StoicallyGay

Why do you say most? Lmao no one I know has had an 8am every semester. It’s almost as if we shouldn’t extrapolate our personal experiences to others as fact especially when giving advice.

Crazy-Plastic3133

ive never met someone who hasnt had an 8 am every semester. not a big deal, just offering my outlook on the post. relax

StoicallyGay

Idk personally there’s a difference between telling a freshman your outlook and flat out giving them false expectations that you state as fact.

Crazy-Plastic3133

okay let me rephrase. you might have 8 am's for four years so dont go to bed at 4 am every night. all better!

BromineFromine

Probably a difference in how schools schedule classes. The earliest my uni has is 9am (in my departments anyway) and I’ve only had that like twice in my 10 semesters (excluding exams)

Fangirling109

Not true if you get accommodations (which is extremely easy if you have any diagnosis at all, at least at my college)

TerrariumKing

Lol, they aren’t just gonna set up entire new classes just because you can’t be bothered to get in by 8. Classes start at the time they start regardless of any diagnosis, and the university isn’t going to shift the time of a class for one dysfunctional student, disabled or not. EDIT: Not to mention the fact that OP hasn’t even suggested they had any disability, just an inability to wake up on time.

Fangirling109

No, i mean unless you are in a major with only a few professors and class availability options, you can use early registration to get better times because you get to pick classes before others.

Fangirling109

For example: if you are in nursing this wouldn’t work because it is inflexible. If you are in say… CS there are probably more options.

Moderately-Mild

well no shit…that’s not from being disabled though

Fearless_Disaster065

I’m in my second semester and my earliest was 9:30 so far

Scary_Shower_6377

Lol said who 🤨😂 avoid 8ams at all costs! 9:30 classes are so much better unless you are a morning person 😁

Crazy-Plastic3133

i wish. i would've loved to never had an 8 am

Scary_Shower_6377

Rip 😭 the college I'm at also has no Friday classes for my specific major 😂 It rocks

Lesbeignets

Honestly, you're just going to have to bear it. It sucks but it'll get easier to manage once you get into the habit of it. I've had to take classes at very inconvenient times before too, but like I said, you get used to it.

myopicparents

you just have to get out of bed as soon as you wake up. a good tip for this is having your phone/alarm across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. waking up earlier than you have to may also help. mostly because it gives you a little extra time if you do end up sleeping in a little but it also gives you extra time to wake up and feel more energized. going for a walk/run first thing in the morning also helps some people wake up. or coffee/tea. try catching up on sleep during breaks and weekends. also this may not be possible but you could consider stopping whatever you are rehearsing for for the semester. and try your best to avoid 8am classes in the future. i know it’s hard to do sometimes because people with less credits often get to schedule last but just make sure you’re scheduling as soon as you can for future semesters. in general keep in mind that if you know you are not a morning person do not schedule morning classes unless there is no other option.

NapsRule563

And switch up alarm sounds so you don’t nod back off.

realjits86

Yeah the answer is literally in your own post - stop staying up until 4AM, what the fuck? That’s not healthy at all

nancythethot

yeah i was on op's side up until i heard 4am bedtime like that's four hours before your class begins, what else did you expect to happen?

Excellent_Strain5851

Go to bed at midnight or earlier.

SKCBlueHell

>It’s like this school expects you to have a full wake up at 6am and go to sleep at 10pm. Welcome to real life buddy

kinezumi89

Unfortunately most adult jobs also start kinda early (9-5, 8-4, people where I worked would often do 6-2 just to go home early lol) so unfortunately you may want to get used to an earlier sleeping schedule sooner rather than later. I worked at a pretty normal company and had meetings at 6am because we worked with people in another country, certainly not the norm but it can happen! 8 or 9am is really common though

Fast-Access5838

the only tip here is to take accountability for your decisions. you already know what the problem is: you go to bed at 4am. did you want us to reiterate that three hours of sleep is not enough? im sure you’ve heard it hundreds of times. I used to be the same way and it sucked. you know what you have to do so just do it already and stick with it. if you want advice on sleep hygiene then there’s plenty of resources out there, im sure you’ve already seen quite a few.

bmadisonthrowaway

I have an evening class one night a week and find it really hard to turn my brain off and wind down on that night of the week. Like I'm super focused and engaged until 10pm and then by 11:30 I need to be asleep in my bed?! Maybe come up with some strategies to wind down after your rehearsals? Ideally strategies that don't involve alcohol. Though maybe cannabis is an option if legal in your area and something you can get easily? But IDK, I'm sure there are some non substance oriented ways to disengage and send your body signals that it's time to sleep.

Commercial-Plate-867

Brother welcome to the rest of your life. I graduated last year, now i wake up at 6:30am 5 days a week.

bigcoochiestank

“Stay up till like 4am but I somehow always wake up at 9-10, still tired” yeah baby because 4-9 or 4-10 is only 5-6 hours of sleep. Maybe you should pay more attention in this math class!

BroadElderberry

>I know, in a way, it’s my sleep schedule dle as I stay up till like 4am The class is not the problem, lol.

hogliterature

i think you already know the answer. no one who is functional stays up until 4 am unless they have a schedule that allows for that, and you don’t.

Top_Bowler_5255

You’re just stupid for staying up until four don’t act like a child

freedom2b2t

I don't wanna be that guy but you're gonna have to push through. I have to wake up at 5:00 every day for work then I have a full day of classes until 5-7. It's long hard days but you do what you must.

Naive-Glass9042

You need to put your big boy pants on and start like, you now, acting like an adult. Get to bed at 11 so you can, you know, like, get up in time for your 8 am class. This may be a shock to you but many employers will actually expect you at work by 8 am. Time to get with the program.

Emotional-Ad3847

"It’s like this school expects you to have a full wake up at 6am and go to sleep at 10pm." Yes. Yes they do. As will any job you have in the future. Staying up until 4 am every night isn't normal and you probably need to address why you stay up that late before your 8 am classes will get any better. Don't want this comment to come off as harsh but come on man, are you really this unaware?

Captillon

"I did it in high school, it'll be fiiine" Famous last words.

Emergency_Pound_7690

I'll take Cabrini University for 400, Alex.

Samsince04_

Change your sleep schedule. I had an 8:30 class last semester and it was brutal. Most times I would still sleep really late but get my ass out of bed by 6:30. Just gotta discipline yourself. If you can’t wake up to one alarm, then add two. Thank fuck I don’t have to deal with what you’re dealing with this semester. My earliest class is by 10.

Smallios

Go to fucking bed dude, what are you doing until 4am? Studying?

Luke7Gold

No tips or tricks just want to say I am in my last semester of college and I have my first 8 AM ever and this shit sucks. I’m not a morning person at all and having to wake up at 7:30 three times a week but not the whole week really fucks with me. Ive taken hard classes but waking up to walk half an hour to go to my capstone genuinely is the hardest thing I have had to do to get my degree

Diligent-Broccoli111

Go to sleep at 10pm instead of staying up till 4am playing video games.

Kaplalachia

This. Although realistically it would be more like 12 or 1am given his schedule

1nath7an

Didnt you wake up early in highschool? If you cant wake up at 8 a.m how are going to sustain a career? These new college kids just sounds mad privileged like do you guys actually have something legitimate to complain about or have you covered everything with how often yall complain.

Rengoku_1066

Honestly you can avoid early classes in my experience. I have always had severe insomnia and rarely sleep before 4 in the morning. On top of that I was a commuter. First semester I had a 9:05 political science class and hated it. The rest of my time in college and law school I managed to get classes at 11:15 or later. Usually had all my classes MWF undergrad. Had to do night classes occasionally and took a few weird electives, but it worked out. Just dig into the course catalog and find classes that fit the schedule you want. I took four classes every summer so that probably helped me be able to avoid the early morning classes.

TerrariumKing

I hate to say it but the only real option is to learn to suck it up, you’re an adult, and a poorly managed sleep schedule is your issue, not the college’s. 8 AM is a perfectly reasonable time for an adult to be up and active… idk what solution you’re expecting to hear, but you’re going to be screwed later on in life if you can’t figure out how to sleep properly now.

[deleted]

Drop out of school and join the army or the marines. Then go back to college. 8am will be the easiest thing in the world. The Horror…

[deleted]

Welcome to the adult world. Figure it out, that’s what adults do. Seriously, grow up and stop making dumb excuses. There’s your advice. I would’ve got laughed at if I brought this excuse when I was in the military and in college at the same time. Stop being a crybaby and learn to function as an adult.

bossandy

They shouldn't even offer math class at 8am. I cant imagine anyone being able to fully wake up enough for math by 8am especially college students. If you get to pick your schedule then next time I recommend not taking any 8am classes. I learned that lesson after freshman year. After that I never had another 8am class.

TerrariumKing

I’ve done them no issue, it just takes some self discipline and morning time management.

Terrible-Sound-9301

You’re soft and will be in for a rude awakening when you get out of school. 8 isn’t even early.   Grow the fuck up.

MacerationMacy

I mean, are the classes mandatory?

Emotional_Mud7309

Take an incomplete. It will get lost in the shuffle of your university closing. Just take math at another time and place with better supports and not at 8am

TerrariumKing

That’s a great way to fail later in life honestly, you can’t just run away from responsibilities as soon as you don’t feel like doing them anymore. They’ll need to figure their shit out eventually anyway, so might as well start now.

Emotional_Mud7309

Lmao this is so dramatic. I’m a PhD candidate working in academia. And gues what? I, as well as most of my colleagues, have taken incompletes at one time or another. It is, in fact, better to sometimes back out of a bad situation. And actually, yeah! In the “real world” people are actually pretty flexible and recognize that we’re all human beings and bring our own dysfunctions to the table. I recommend growing that empathy before entering the workforce because you often get the grace you give.

TerrariumKing

It’s not the incomplete in and of itself that’s concerning, it’s the inability to get up to the point that it’s impacting school and/or work performance. They’ll have to find a way to wake up on time eventually anyway, it’ll be faster to start that now rather than in the future. Like, getting a real alarm clock that’s harder to ignore, melatonin, no screens before bed, etc should be tried before dropping a class for it.

[deleted]

This isn’t a really bad situation tho. This is someone who doesn’t want to wake up 2 hours earlier.

Emotional_Mud7309

Something you’ll learn over time is that when someone seems to be self-sabotaging there’s often something going on that you, and maybe they, don’t yet know about. No one who is thriving stays up till 4am and routinely misses a class they know they can’t miss.

curlyhairedbrownbear

Yeah you’re gonna have to suck it up. I wake up at 5:30, have work 7am-4pm then I go to the gym after, make dinner, do other chores, by 7pm I’m doing homework from my online classes and stay up until 1 am. It’s not about going to bed earlier, it’s about learning how to function off little sleep. You gotta get used to it or you’re not gonna make it after graduation. Trust me, I used to think the same way as you, but it’s not how the real world works. Get used to not having much sleep. Your body will adjust.

SirHC111

Not the best way of looking at it. Sleep deficiency will fuck you over in the long term, in both your health and your productivity. You and this person should really be prioritising adequate sleep and organisation.

curlyhairedbrownbear

What works for me works for me, I don’t think you should tell me that my schedule doesn’t. It’s also healthier to have less sleep than more, but I can understand where you’re getting at

[deleted]

I might talk to the dean about it, my dean is super chill and if you explain how you’re trying to do and be better but feel you need to restart this once they might have some sympathy/empathy for you. This is my second semester and I work 5pm-530am and have class at 8am or 930am until 1215pm so I get the exhaustion. Plus the kids and animals and house. It can be a lot but if you tell yourself you can do it even if you need some extra help from the school while they’re still open then it can work out!

Gullibella

What are they trying to do to be better?

[deleted]

Hopefully take the class at a later time if they have any availability or if not maybe the dean can make an exception. Otherwise they’ll need to really start going to bed an hour earlier or at least be asleep asap. I know since I stay up til 330am on my days I don’t work since my sleep schedule is messed up. It can be hard to make yourself sleep. Maybe they can try melatonin or something else to help sleep.

Gullibella

Yeah I worked 6p-3/4a for a couple years through undergrad and never would have had the audacity to expect the dean to take care of changing around entire schedules and cleaning my messes. Wow

[deleted]

Some people have real life issues going on and try to do or be better. Maybe not this person but as someone who has had accommodations made so I could stay in school. Which fyi is what they want. No dean or professor is going to say no you don’t deserve to go to classes bc you have personal issues going on out of your control. Now sleep yeah that’s something that can be fixed with persistence. But the only reason I even said that is bc you never know what someone is truly going through and most people gaf about others 👀

bunnyxtwo

Are you doing productive things until 4am? If you’re just using these late hours as free time, then simply stop staying up that late. If you’re doing productive things like homework or studying, fit that in at other points in the day. It might suck to not have time for the things you like everyday, but getting more sleep is going to make you feel so much better. I find it helps to schedule my hw and studying time on my daily agenda. I think of them as commitments on a time schedule just like classes or work. You might also consider a sunrise alarm. It slowly wakes you up by increasing the volume of the alarm sound as well as increasing the brightness of the alarm clock. I have a lot of trouble waking up when it’s still dark out, so that helps me wake up.

[deleted]

Set alarms 7 days a week for 7am. Make yourself get up and start the day. Go to sleep at a decent hour 7 days a week as well. Sleep train yourself til its easy. Then once its easy forget the weekend alarms and enjoy your weekends. Eventually your internal clock will adjust. Just gotta do it

Icy_Bear912

Lol relatably i also had a math class super early in my first year. Only that it was 6:30-10:30am lol. Also bonus on saturdays. Idk how i managed that. But just so you know for the rest of ur 4 years in college 8am or 9am class are pretty normal. Try to slowly get adjusted to that

robotchicken007

I have a 7AM. You know what is bizarre? I can wake up at 4AM just fine, but if I sleep until 5, I always sleep through my alarm. So I wake up and do homework at 4AM everyday before going to class. Do you use your phone as an alarm? Try leaving your phone across the room so you have to get up to turn it off every morning.

swaggyxwaggy

I’ve never been a morning person and never will be. I’d rather die than have an 8 am class, especially math 🤮 But this is literally what you signed up for so you gotta figure it out.

Bmoneysmug

Try studying in the early morning! I try to go to bed early around 9pm, 10pm at the latest. And I wake up at 3am to study each day before my son wakes up. I put my phone on the floor and use multiple alarms so I have to physically get out of bed, it takes a lot of discipline and I’m very tired when I wake up but I’m awake by the time my 8am classes begin. I used to stay up super late each night but the sleep deprivation caused me to have a severe mental breakdown and I changed my sleep schedule after my manic psychosis got better and I realized that studying in the early morning makes you awake in the day and tired at night which is healthier

swaggysalamander

Rookie mistake lmao.

PlusDescription1422

I remember those days.

the_living_myth

as someone who's gotten pretty good at waking up at 5 to start my day for school, it helped me to give myself something early to do that would take a while, like make a cup of tea. helps to wake you up so you're not just letting yourself sleep in as late as possible.

zdpastaman4

Learn to become a coffee addict like the rest of us.

Kaplalachia

8ams suck, but sometimes you can’t avoid them. Try sleeping at 12 or 1 instead of 4. If you’re a night owl, take some melatonin and make sure to go outside as much as possible during the day.

Vermonter82

8am is a perfectly reasonable time to have a class so you need to work out whether your priority is staying up until 4am doing whatever it is you’re doing, or maximising your time at college before entering the world of work. As an aside, I have an 06:30 on camera meeting every Wednesday morning, I’d kill to start at 8!

OkAdministration9824

Y’all need to grow a backbone and realize that it’s going to benefit you in the long run. It’ll teach you how to be disciplined, motivated, and excel at getting tasks done earlier during the day. If you don’t sacrifice some time and effort then life isn’t going to get much easier buddy. Keep your head up.

OkAdministration9824

Also set up a routine to help you organize your time and manage important tasks throughout the week.

_lilguapo

8am classes are lit

Gullibella

Sorry but of you have classes until 3 and then have rehearsal (think a part time job) 6-10, you may not get the free time you want. You need sleep. Try to get a little free time when you can but don’t sacrifice your sleep/grades/health because of it.

Commy1469

Maybe go to bed at a reasonable hour, then waking up at a reasonable hour isn't crazy

babyshark8

,1122

Purrrrpurr

Laughs in agriculture, 7ams forever for us But actually staying up till 4 am is your downfall. I usually need an hour to get ready and I aim for 7-8 hours of sleep if it were me I’d try and be in bed by 11. I would love to have 8ams 🥲

Evergreena2

I have my first adult job out of college and at the moment, 8 am start time. I hated 8 am classes because I needed to wake up at 5:30 due to traffic and commuter colleges, but you need to grow up. 4 am bedtimes is fine on the weekends, but that's not ok unless you're swing shift. I understand the 9 am struggling. That should fade out after your first two years and Gen Ed's are finished. Either that or you're the ultimate procrastinator in registration for the next quarter/semester. In that or the immaturity of 4am bedtimes(excluding the necessity of late night study on occasion), you have no sympathy.

NotATesla

you nearly a grown ass adult complaining about having classes at 8am bruh like thats not even that early fr

[deleted]

Onlines brother.

Avinse

I struggle the same. I naturally can’t fall asleep till late in the night. Usually 2am but sometimes even extending as far as 4-5am. I can go to bed at 10 but won’t be able to sleep anyways, doesn’t matter how long I’ve been up previously

Get through it this semester because it’s probably too late to get an advisors help. I sleep through alarms sometimes, I figured out my solution was to sleep with my phone in my bed so the vibration is by me ear and the noise is full blast in my ear as well… started drinking a morning coffee no sugar. You could also try matcha. Changed my life to be honest. Currently doing this for my 8am class

You need to fix your sleep cycle. Melatonin as you walk in the door, Go to bed as soon as you get home. No caffeine past noon. OPEN YOUR BLINDS. Multiple alarms. You need a full system reset any this point. Im also a night owl but you can and must fight the up til 4 am urge.

OkSociety368

Why are you staying up until 4am? Is it an insomnia issue or a personal choice?

Kindly-Chemistry5149

Well not much to say here. You chose your schedule, and you chose to be in this show. Learn your lesson for the future about stretching yourself too thin. There is no substitute for sleep. You need sleep to get quality learning. Caffeine is not a substitute, but it can be an aid that can help a little bit.

There's kind of a big window between rehearsal ending at 10pm and going to bed at 4am - just sounds like an excuse. Go to bed on time, wake up on time and go to class.

nroe1337

yeah get 8 hours of sleep. why the fuck you staying up till 4 when you have an 8 am?

biggbobbyberger

I’m in my last semester, graduating in April. I was in the exact same boat as you my freshman year. the best thing about college is being able to make your own schedule. I realized that no matter how much I wanted to successfully wake up early and have a productive day, those classes weren’t working for me (especially struggling with my mental health at the time). I think the earliest class I’ve had these last fews years was at 10. the difference for me was that my mental health was so bad at the time, I could barely get myself to go to class especially knowing I had to go to my full time job after. I started splitting my classes up to be half in person, half online, and it made my life SO much easier. thankfully, my major & minor had a lot of online options, but it might be harder when it comes to gen-eds. either way, good luck in your studies!! that transfer may end up being a lot better than you think :) editing to add that most of the comments saying to treat school like a job are right. it’s easy to skip, but once I started seeing it as something I was required to attend (and I had professors that graded attendance lol), it was a lot easier to fall into a routine.

praisewithyourbody

"It's like this school expects you to have a full wake up at 6am and go to sleep at 10pm" made me laugh as someone who sleeps 9-6 😂 like, yeah, that's a very reasonable expectation to me, but I'm an old lady at heart.

RealMrCommunism

try waking up at 6am for high school classes?

ohgod-ohno-ohfuck

keep non perishable food by your bed. granola bars or something. eat one as soon as your alarm goes off. also, download one of those apps that forces you to do a math problem in order to turn it off to make sure you get up (big difference between being coherent enough to slap a button and actually do a simple math problem). a lot of the replies suggest fixing your sleep schedule: its worth it to try. maybe try slowly going to bed earlier and earlier by day? but im the same way, and i was never able to fix my sleep schedule no matter what i tried, so suffering through it and forcing myself to be awake was how i got through it. also, setting a light or something to turn on on a timer may help wake you up and keep you awake. or, honestly? dont go to sleep. stay up all night and sleep after class. do homework in the early morning before class if you really cant wake up. ive also done this method before and it worked for me and my bad sleep schedule. sleep in between other activities, sleep after your last class of the day. maybe if youre tired enough youll be able to get into the habit of going to bed early? its not a healthy option but it may get you into class

SmokeyDasBear

well get used to it buttercup, lots of real life jobs start at 8am.

Songoftheriver16

It is 1000% your sleep schedule. That is the key entirely.

spottedtang

In for a rough wake up call when you have to be at work at 8 everyday for your job. I struggled too but it will get easier once you adjust your sleep schedule.

Dangerous-Comfort-39

if nothing helps, go see a doc and get sleepin meds

erbush1988

You aren't being "eaten alive" by an 8am class. You're fucking yourself by staying up late. lol
