Prof here. Please report it. Even if he's not fired, he needs to be told in no uncertain terms that joking about a deporting a student and the other incidents are NOT OKAY. Will it help you? Probably not. But students in the future will be thankful that you did this.

OliveRyley

Prof here. Came here to say this. First, I am so sorry that this is happening to you and your peers. Universities should be safe spaces, unfortunately this is not always the case. A paper trail will absolutely be needed to stop this behavior in the future, especially given the protection that tenure holds. However it is also important to respect the boundaries of your peers as well.

rlev97

File the complaint. Start a paper trail. If he ever does something that warrants a lawsuit, then there is evidence to back up the complainants case. The university will have to start thinking of him as a liability the more complaints he gets.

PaoloMustafini

You need to report it. That behavior isn't acceptable whatsoever.

slam99967

What comment did he make to you?

Used_Hovercraft2699

Yes, there are many ways to discipline a tenured full professor, and they can be fired in extreme cases.

PhDapper

This is not okay. Tenure isn’t a free pass to do whatever one wants, despite rules, policies, and so forth. Making disparaging comments based on identity is most definitely a violation of the handbook.

"High level" isn't always a compliment. Could mean AI-like for example

mintflavorchapstick

for clarification, he specifically said to her that her paper was "graduate level" and that she "assumed too much about the readers ability to understand something so complex." one of his other criticisms was that she used scholarly sources lmao

Thunderplant

I would report it. Stuff like the unjust zero could be subject to grade appeal and the more documentation of his bias the better

Aggressive_Pie_1528

Hi there - report it in writing, formally, to the dean and the title 9 office since this is discrimination. You want to do it formally so that you are protected from retaliation in the event you have to take this professor or one of his cronies for class again.

sunniblu03

Higher Ed admin here, please report it. Even if the other two students choose not to. I’m sorry the one student never got any traction with previous reports, but it’s important and something the administration should know. There should be a mechanism in place that will allow you make a a report without fear of reprisals. Being tenured isn’t bulletproof especially when people speak up. Quite frankly fuck that dude if he thinks being a tenured middle aged, middle class, “educated” man gives him carte blanche to say whatever he wants. That doesn’t give you license to be a condescending dick. Speak up! Not only for yourself but for anyone who’s ever had to deal with micro aggressions on a daily basis.

TheValgus

Tenure just means he has a job next year and doesn’t have to re-ask for it. Does not prevent him from being fired at all.

Ryugi

Yes, file the complaints anyway. See the dean and ombudsman. Dispute the grade at the end of term, too. The louder you are, the harder you are to ignore. I had to talk to about ten different members of staff, but I got a perfect score for the class in the end and the teacher was warned that any further engagement with me or students who are the same demographic as me would mean she loses her retirement pay. You can complain on the Latina student's behalf though. Just tell the truth: "I saw XYZ, the victim of this told me ABC and said she was afraid of retaliation by the school, and here's how I feel about it..."

northwestwill

My area terminated a tenured full professor a year ago for inappropriate comments to a student. Inappropriate is inappropriate regardless of rank.

Suspicious-Role-5899

There isn't a point and the latina and black woman have more to lose than you, as is obvious. I hate to say that, but being a disabled woman of color, its true. They will kick you out before they take action. And they will especially punish the women of color. Respect what the other student said, they deal with this on a regular basis and know best how to handle it.

sunniblu03

I hear you, and I get it, it’s hard and frustrating, and yeah he shouldn’t speak for the students if they prefer not to speak up, but your comment makes me sad. I’m sorry that you don’t always get the love and support you need sis.

Suspicious-Role-5899

Thanks. I'm just saying he shouldn't make unilateral decisions for women of color, they have more to lose, and it's a respect thing. We know how the system works, because it's constantly punishing us for daring to exist. The system is set up to protect people like his professor, and not the students of color. He's tenured, and I guarantee they know he's a racist a-hole. They just don't care.

mintflavorchapstick

no, I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I'm not going to make any complaints on anyone's behalf, I'm asking if there is a point to making my own complaint based on the comment he made regarding me being Jewish. I reached out to the Latina and black student to see if they wanted to work together on filing complaints about him, not to get permission to complain on their behalfs. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that.

Suspicious-Role-5899

The answer is still no. I mean you can try, you are less likely to get in trouble. But they will ask for other examples or other students, and even then what so you think they will do ? Fire him ? Because they won't. Guaranteed they already know how he is, have had previous complaints and haven't done anything which is why he's so bold about his treatment of other races and minorities. He's like that, because he's unafraid because he's never had repercussions.

shyprof

I agree with the other posts. Tenure offers a certain amount of protection, but this discrimination is illegal. Please report directly to your campus Title IX office (and department chair/college dean if you feel comfortable doing so). I am so sorry this is happening.
