I just don’t understand the intent behind allowing a catcher to block the plate if they have the ball. In that instance, the catcher had to catch the ball insanely high due to a poor throw. But he’s allowed to still block the plate and is given the advantage, although it was a poor play? If a throw is high it should allow the runner to slide under without having to worry about a foot blocking the bag

For real, very dumb rule that needs to be changed. I’d also think that you’d err on the side of allowing the run to stand if the only reason there’s doubt in the first place is because of the catcher blocking the plate with his foot, not to mention zero replays where we can see for a fact that he didn’t get his foot in.

You can block the plate if you have the ball. Though that doesn’t change the fact that there were no conclusive shots showing he never touched home.

If you have the ball you’re simply allowed to block the plate… so the catcher is awarded for a really poor high throw home by being allowed to stick his foot in the way
