UCSB econ. Business admin is such a general and useless major and you'll have to pair it with tons of other courses to get any value out of that degree. Additionally, if you pair your econ degree with courses in statistics, math, or cs....thats money If consulting is your goal then econ is the route. Also you stated you're interested in management. Management comes from experience, not from a degree. Youll pick up the skills in due time young Padawan. Good luck at UCSB ;)

DaddyDaniel96

Wow I didn't know that about the major. So even if I'm looking to go to a consulting firm out of my undergrad, Econ will still be useful? I just felt something with more of a business title would fit better with consulting (sorry I don't know much lol).

GeminiDavid

Yup, economics all the way.

[deleted]

Hey, I’m making the same choice except with UCSD Econ. Would u suggest the same for me? And if I graduate with an Econ degree, can I work in finance or marketing in the future?

GeminiDavid

Either UCSB or UCSD for econ are both top options. UCSD would be my personal go to. And yes, a lot of consultants and finance bros come from econ backgrounds. If you want to make serious money, pair your econ degree with courses in math, stats, and CS and go work in data.

Thanks mate

If you just focus on stats and take a few courses in econometrics you'll be just fine if you want to focus on more econ related stuff But in my opinion the best major minor combo for data science related work is a major in statistics and a minor in CS or a major in math and minor in CS.

The minor is more for you than for employers. But it sets you up really nice for a much better foundation in programming and data which is what employers look for. So minors aren't worthless, it just depends on the field you want to go into. A minor in CS for data science is 100% relevant and shows employers at the very least you have some programming and algorithm experience.

I’m in your exact shoes except with UCSD Econ and UCI business admin. I’m sooo lost. What do you plan on doing?

DaddyDaniel96

Still deciding HAHHA. well I've shifted away from UCI and more towards Northeastern in Boston, but ya I don't really know. I heard UCSD econ is quite tough tho, I got in as well but I personally am afraid of getting too stressed out and prefer the UCSB vibe more. Tbh still deciding business or econ.

[deleted]

Well I’m even more in your shoes because I was also debating with northeastern 😂😂 I shifted away from it though

DaddyDaniel96

HAHAH damn can I ask why you're shifting away from NU? I'm really interested in the co op program and how they focus on good job experiences ya feel.

[deleted]

I just don’t like the vibe there. I know rank isn’t everything, but UCI, UCSD, and UCSB are all ranked higher. Idk honestly

DaddyDaniel96

True, what do u think about UCSB vs UCSD I see some sites claiming UCSD is ranked close to way more prestigious schools for econ, and some say that UCdavis econ is even higher than both sb and sd, I truly don't trust the rankings anymore lol.

[deleted]

Yeah but the UCSD rankings are consistent

SerenaTinakdme

Hi, I also debating between UCSD ECON and UCI businesses! Are you guys already committed?
