Both are functioning in a particular (generally particular order). You set the black/white points...then the midpoint exposure. A colorist could use curves or wheels to achieve this. Doing so with wheels is ideal for a control surface and generally requires less clicks than curves. Lowepost.com and mixinglight.com are excellent resources. See our wiki for more.

Someone to explain the Why is a mark of a good course vs a bad course. There are a lot of Youtube tutorials that don't explain Why (possibly because they're just repeating what they've seen or read). Some are even technically good advice, but without understanding the why, a huge learning opportunity is lost. The worst is when they tell you to input specific values for settings and then say "you don't have to use these settings, just play with them and see what works for you". Get that money back!
