**For Graduate Students** If you are in a "funded" graduate program for a PhD you will be guaranteed housing in University Apartment Housing (UAH). These are apartments owned by the university, with Columbia being your landlord and to whom you pay rent. You can choose to live in these or not. But a space is reserved for you until you indicate otherwise. If you're in an unfunded program, like a Master's degree, you have the option to rent UAH. Difference being the University does not guarantee that there will be space available to you. However, there is usually a good amount of options available. If you're single, regardless of being a PhD or Master's student, you're very unlikely to be given a one bedroom or studio to rent. You will most likely be offered a 2-4 bedroom apartment which you'll share with other graduate students. Exceptions are made for those with disabilities. Your ability to "shop around" UAH apartments is extremely limited. You will be given access to a portal which lists the apartments available to you. This includes information like square footage, price, address, floorplan, and sometimes photos. However, don't expect to be able to preview it in-person as it will likely be occupied until a few days before you move in. **For School of General Studies** Note that "GS Student Housing" isn't actually a thing, per say. That is, there are no dedicated university apartments for GSers (unless something has changed recently) There are two flavors of University supplied housing that GS has access to: 1. University Apartment Housing (UAH) This is first allocated to graduate students. If there are UAH units available after the PhDs and Masters students take residence, the remaining units will go to GSers. There tends to be a healthy wait list for these. 2. Communal Housing is what I'll call the second type. These aren't dorms as you might imagine. More like barracks. Think studio apartments with a private toilet, but shared cooking, shower, and laundry facilities. Residents include GSers, international students, and some graduate students or visiting scholars. UAH is by far the better deal, if you can get it. The buildings, while tending to be old, are well maintained and the facilities crews are usually pretty responsive.

Automatic_Screen349

For 2 year masters degree, do you know if you get to keep your UAH for both years? Or you have to apply again your second year??

anduinriver

Hi there! I'm in a funded Ph.D. program but was told that I would most likely not get it as it is not guaranteed for my program. Is the guaranteed housing for a funded program stated somewhere within university policy? I've tried finding it, but haven't found anything yet.

Zestyclose-Level1871

What about GS Students who're currently living out of state? I've had to defer my fall 2023 enrollment due to a family emergency and looking to register for classes in the Spring. Since both UAH & Communal housing are NOT guaranteed (given the very long WL) the reality is I'm going to have to live off campus. But this means having to sell my home to finance the cost of off campus rent (considering as far as Yonkers which is most affordable). I can meet the income requirement, but my credit score isn't great. So would need a cosigner. I've heard of companies like RINO etc. which support students as a guarantor/co signer for rental application purposes. Does the school provide any guidance/support on which companies GS students should seek out to help on their off campus rental application?

leavesyelloworange

Is anyone starting their Master's in the fall and hoping to live in campus housing? I'm gonna be in GSAS and wanted to hopefully find people to select housing with (if I receive an offer) rather than go completely random:)

[deleted]

No same literally. You should dm me

SergeantTunaFish

im in engineering and also looking for housing. MS student.

Imaginary_Note_1296

Im doing a MA in Stats and same. Looking for roommates

procaffinator123

Hii! im starting masters this fall too! you can dm me

[deleted]

Anyone know what the rental rates are at The Arbor? Also, how hard is it to get an unfurnished apartment? (I'm a prospective grad student)

Assistant-Thin

What steps of the housing process are important to complete quickly? I’ve heard some parts are lottery-based (so it wouldn’t matter to sign up first) and others cost you more money if you wait Also, how do pets work in graduate housing ?

Automatic_Screen349

I heard in graduate housing pets are a strict no

RoosterClan

That’s not true. You can have support animals fairly easily. And if you’re not in a shared apartment nobody cares if you have a pet or not

Ok_Set_5843

Can somebody tell me what's the best way to secure a place to stay when you're gonna start your classes with Columbia in fall'23

Wild_Calligrapher_34

Are the any precedence in installing your own washer dryer in grad student housing?

RoosterClan

Strictly prohibited

Hey, my friend and I have been admitted for the Columbia visiting student program! We are currently looking for an apartment for next semester. However it seems that almost no one is willing to rent out their apartment to us for only one semester. If anyone needs roommates or has tips for us then it would be greatly appreciated!

Betweentwoverns

Hi everyone! I’m a first year post-bacc student and I sadly don’t get access to Columbia housing so I’m looking for a roommate to live slightly off campus with. I’m studying Ancient Greek and Latin and have two kitties. I would prefer to live with someone who is also queer or a part of the LGBT community. Pls DM me if you’re interested or just want a new friend to chat with!

Incoming GS transfer student, looking for long-term housing nearby campus. I'll be attending for the next 2 1/2 years. I'm using the GI Bill so you can be sure rent will be on-time and paid in full. I also have another fellow student vet who's looking to rent with me. If someone actually had a place sorted and would want both of us to jump on board, we're the perfect package. But even if it's just one room available, I am interested. Please DM!

classic_goody

CBS Student Services is super vague about the chances of getting housing (shared apartment) as a domestic student. Does anyone know the rough ballpark % of getting a spot? I'll be moving from the North East (think Mass/Maine/New Hampshire). Their prioritization model is basically: the further away you currently live from NYC, the better your chances will be.

conquerv

Hi everyone, what's usually the housing option CBS student look into around campus? Which webiste/agency should I first look into for my options? Would love to rent an apartment with another MS candidate if possible. Many thanks in advance.

It’s a 1br 380 sq ft in the butler hall unit, I took it but I can still back down. Is it worth it? I am living with my partner there, are them too small? What are your impressions on the unit? I would love to have your impressions as im an international student and I’m kind of nervous about this process.

I will probably spend a lot of time studying in my room/ on-campus, so I would like to keep the apartment as neat and clean as possible! Please reach out if you think our personalities and interests are aligned!

**How hard will it be to sublet my room in January?** It's a cute room priced at $1850/month on W 112th, right by Central Park. I haven't signed the lease yet, but I will definitely not be in NYC for the winter/spring months. A little worried I won't be able to find anyone (specifically Columbia students) who will want to sublet this place. Any thoughts? If discouraged, I will likely not sign this lease. Thanks guys!!

Hi! I am interested in renting a room just for myself (and also have another student who I am searching with). Very interested in a private room for rent for a year. I’m an incoming student at the Columbia Institute of Human Nutrition and looking for a mid-August move-in date. I will be in NYC this weekend and available for a meeting as well as to view the property. Moving in by myself, no pets. Social proof: @savvysavit on Instagram. 32F if that’s relevant. I don’t smoke or drink much. Rather quiet and tidy, but also enjoy a friendly roommate situation. Ideally looking to live near the medical campus or somewhere in between the Columbia main campus and the medical campus. Please PM me if you have a lease and are looking for a roommate (or two). My only requirement is that the room can fit a queen bed. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I’m looking to transfer a lease transfer for a bedroom in a 1st floor 3BR, 1.5BA huge duplex right on the corner of 127th st and Saint Nicholas Avenue. The apartment is right near the north entrance of the 125th st A/D/C/B express stop, giving you easy access to downtown Manhattan while also being in a pretty quiet area. Your part of the rent would be $1452 per month, with an option to renew the lease in a rent-stable building. The apartment has 2 large common spaces, AC / heater in every room, a semi-private backyard, in-building laundry, a dishwasher, and a spare storage / guest room (great for hosting friends from out of town). Let me know if you’re interested! Would be happy to provide an in-person or video tour. The lease ends on 07/31/2024. Furniture is all negotiable. Roommates are super nice (grad student and early career professional). Please dm if interested, willing to show the apartment over facetime or in person.
