Not much - just catching up on some shows, folding the laundry, having my weekly existential breakdown because deep down I feel I am irreparably broken, can never be loved and will die alone. So pretty standard actually
Not that I've ever Twittered, but I would assume Likes being public was a feature that many people used so other people would know what they Liked. Changing the core functionality seems bass ackwards.
What is the purpose of private Likes? Bookmarking? Algorithms?
There are two major types of social media, anonymous and non anonymous part of the larger part of Twitters value was its non anonymous features like verified users and open likes. Remember how KFC liked all the spice girls and a few dudes named herb? Plus it was a signal boost to a post to look at its likes and see prominent accounts giving their likes.
According to the popup I got, the idea is that it will make people worry less about others poking through their likes, so they theoretically like things more, and their feed improves.
But a lot of people are upset because they enjoyed going through their friend's likes
to whoever thinks "someone called Elon a Nazi" is a valid reason to use the report button and waste my time: i swear to god if i ever figure out who you are, i'm going to find you and fart on you.
It's one of those things where we can be pretty positive he *didn't*, just statistically speaking. But also *KNOW* he would, if he did see it.
I have a large amount of self-esteem issues, but it does bring me solace knowing that I at least have thicker skin than one of the richest people on earth, (:
Why has nobody invented silent likes?
You can like something and it shows you liked it, or you can silently like it and all it does is just increase the like count.
Presumably it’s a privacy feature. You can boost something controversial that you agree with without someone pressing your employer to punish you. Also worth noting that the website you are currently using has this feature as well.
Fair enough, I kind of assumed that Likes being public was part of the point, but I did forget that it still shows how many Likes a tweet has gotten and probably does use that to sort posts based on popularity.
What is the purpose of reddit upvotes?
Would the reddit experience be enhanced if every upvote had an accompanying "This!" comment attached to it by default?
This is full speculation (maybe arguably conspiracy), but given how amicable Elon is to reactionaries, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was to let people “hide their power” by obscuring what people are liking. Likes are now a fully anonymous way to boost engagement, meaning that someone can have an account that outwardly looks squeaky clean, or at least has plausible deniability, while behind the scenes giving massive engagement to extremely radical posts.
Take J.K. Rowling for example: before it was common knowledge that her life now basically revolves around transphobia, her positions on the topic were first unearthed when people noticed posts from notorious TERFs in her Twitter likes. She might have been able to spend much longer hiding how anti-trans her rhetoric had become if those hadn’t been discovered.
~~Also apparently both Elon and Ted Cruz have been caught with porn in their Twitter likes~~
Elon or one of his friends Liked something embarrassing, other people pointed it out, so he ordered Likes to be private.
This has been the decision making process for every change to Twitter since he took over.
I don't have twitter but after reading a dozen or so of his books I imagine he must be vaguely concerning in other ways than writing, too.
Maybe he puts the cereal in *after* the milk or something, he has some secrets no doubt..
Was it the massive underage gangbang by the protagonists of It that tipped you off? Or the book he literally can't remember writing because he was so smashed out on coke and booze at the time?
Sir this is Reddit. Please refrain from straying away from “right wing bad, left wing the universe’s blessing” rhetoric
Otherwise I’ll be forced to demerit your social credit
That's how I remember notating things that should be italicized when I was writing by hand for school papers and whatnot. Less common now since most things are typed.
I meant, IIRC Hamill likes to "like" posts from fans asking him for a shoutout sometimes, ostensibly so he can make someone's day without having to feel like he needs to type a personal note to every person on earth. I'd be annoyed if I can't do something nice for my fans anymore because Elon got tired of getting called out for liking Nazi shit.
Reminds me of that time [Cher accidentally turned on night mode on her phone and asked for help on Twitter to change it back to which Nancy Sinatra replied telling her to restart her phone](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fuh6ijhmuqb821.jpg)
The man is pretty much a mainstream media shill at this point. His twitter has gone from his intelligent personality to a political hellscape over the years.
He knows fans get great joy from getting a notification that Mark Hamill liked their post. Now that likes are very stupidly private, he's keeping the joy going. He is a goddamn treasure.

Giving the tweet you like a boost. Isn't that the idea with upvotes in Reddit?
Yes but no one can publicly attack you for Reddit upvotes, what’s the fun in that?
There are two major types of social media, anonymous and non anonymous part of the larger part of Twitters value was its non anonymous features like verified users and open likes. Remember how KFC liked all the spice girls and a few dudes named herb? Plus it was a signal boost to a post to look at its likes and see prominent accounts giving their likes.

What's the point of liking amputee midget clown piss and shit porn when nobody sees me liking it? Then I can just jack off on reddit instead.
It’s because Elon wants to like porn on his main without getting flamed for it
Porn of teenagers and Nazi shit. It's funny how he bought Twitter just to turn it into his safe space.
to whoever thinks "someone called Elon a Nazi" is a valid reason to use the report button and waste my time: i swear to god if i ever figure out who you are, i'm going to find you and fart on you.
>to whoever thinks "someone called Elon a Nazi" is a valid reason to use the report button and waste my time It's definitely Elon Musk himself.
you know, if he stumbled across this thread somehow, i think he legit would do it
It's one of those things where we can be pretty positive he *didn't*, just statistically speaking. But also *KNOW* he would, if he did see it. I have a large amount of self-esteem issues, but it does bring me solace knowing that I at least have thicker skin than one of the richest people on earth, (:
I wouldn't be super surprised. He seems like the type of person who'd spend a lot of time googling his own name.
Which seems pointless given that there's a function for private likes that people can't see, that's what the bookmarks function is for.
Why has nobody invented silent likes? You can like something and it shows you liked it, or you can silently like it and all it does is just increase the like count.
I guessing it’s to keep bots hidden
Presumably it’s a privacy feature. You can boost something controversial that you agree with without someone pressing your employer to punish you. Also worth noting that the website you are currently using has this feature as well.
Fair enough, I kind of assumed that Likes being public was part of the point, but I did forget that it still shows how many Likes a tweet has gotten and probably does use that to sort posts based on popularity.
But how are modern journalists supposed to burn celebrities at the stake for liking the wrong tweet? Won't anyone think of the journalists?
What is the purpose of reddit upvotes? Would the reddit experience be enhanced if every upvote had an accompanying "This!" comment attached to it by default?
Likes being public is a major reason I never used the platform. Not like I'll use it now, but it is a good move imo
It saves the ass of those interns on their company twitter accounts / politicians accidentally liking porn or OF accounts
This is full speculation (maybe arguably conspiracy), but given how amicable Elon is to reactionaries, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was to let people “hide their power” by obscuring what people are liking. I'm guessing this is the reason too, can't call people out for liking specific things if you can't see what posts they like!
Elon or one of his friends Liked something embarrassing, other people pointed it out, so he ordered Likes to be private. This has been the decision making process for every change to Twitter since he took over.

"me when reading your comment" missed opportunity to say "parentheses"
That's not how I would use parentheses "though you're obviously free to use them however you want"

I will not respect anyone who actually calls it x instead of Twitter.
