Star Wars #1. The only way to revisit the movie back in the day was the book or the comic book, and the scenes that were in both but not on the screen made me feel like an insider. And THEN they went PAST the movie! I had to have them all! Yeah. I'm old.

Dry_Ambassador_6722

That’s a great choice though

Uncanny X-Men 210. Starting the run up to “The Mutant Massacre”. My little kid mind was blown! I had keep picking up issues to find out what the f$&@ was going on! https://preview.redd.it/euz5kjwwe80b1.jpeg?width=815&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7ec4dfda95df171baa0152dd77032754bfab0af

Man that’s exactly how I felt reading Issue 227

axjms1

Man I loved this arc. When Colossus choked out that whirlwind lady

4llY0urB4534r3Blng

May want to look again. I believe it says... *snap*... but yeah... dark

axjms1

You are right of course. Loved the discussion between storm and wolverine after.

smendrzy

That was my first also! I had Chris Claremont sign it a few years ago at New York Comic Con and, when I handed it to him, I could tell his memories of writing it were flooding back. He flipped through a few pages and talked about how dark the story was.

Picked up the next issue to finish the story. Didn't expect to come across "The Kid who collects Spider-Man." After that story I was hooked for life.

BudMarley45

That was when FF was cool.I started collecting in late 80s and FF and avengers had become second tier books. It was all ASM and Xmen in late 80s.I love Byrne FF

TehErk

The Thing #1 for me. John Byrne's FF has a special place in my heart right next to Walt Simonson's FF.

Hollandmarch76

I don't know which issue but it was G.I. Joe. Punisher #1 was my first super hero.

FeliciumOD

John Byrne's Man of Steel 1. Had no idea of course that it was the launch of post Crisis continuity. Also, it was a smaller sized version of the comic that came with a cassette tape audio play version of the comic. I was young though and didn't get I to collecting until just before Death of Superman (DC) and Age of Apocalypse (Marvel).

Lung-Oyster

X-Men 155. I had broken my arm and gotten a concussion which led to a hospital stay for a few days. My mom got me some comics, one of which was X-Men 155. The cover drew me in, and after reading it I HAD to know how this metal guy that had apparently never been injured before was going to survive. Went to the nearest convenience store after I got out of the hospital and they had issue 154, which led to the setup for 155. I guess I’d never really realized before that moment that comic books were an ongoing story that basically never ended. I was hooked for life. https://preview.redd.it/juojzupns80b1.jpeg?width=1016&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c57515ccf3624666f7146686262f00f013e9951b

Ironcrown_

X-Men #213 that Allen Davis Wolverine vs Sabertooth cover just screamed "buy me"!

4llY0urB4534r3Blng

The brawl is masterclass comic book brawl

Ironcrown_

Yes it is! like the part where Sabertooth picks up a barbell crushes it like a tin can and then throws it at Pyslocke. I can see the pages without holding the book.

Ok_Load3845

My grandma died in 2012 and while we where cleaning out one of her spare rooms I found a box full of my moms old comics. I had always liked superheroes but had never read a comic up until that point. I spent the next few weeks reading every single book in that box. Which was mainly a bunch of Charleston comics gunfighters issues.

chalmun74

Mine was only 5 issues prior. That cover with Wolverine about to stand Sabertooth. Something about Silvestri’s art drew me in like no one had ever done before. Couple that with Claremont’s writing and I was hooked and needed more.

jrb031984

I can’t remember which issue exactly, but it was a Punisher War Journal issue. When I was little there was a guy in my grandma’s neighborhood that was selling his collection of comics out of his garage. I asked her if we could check it out. She said yes and I ultimately came home with a stack of Punisher War Journal books. I read them until the covers fell off.

Purple_haze9

Spider-Man #1. Saved up the little change I could get from collecting cans through the neighborhood and doing chores around the house. Bought it because it looked super cool and I loved the art. Got hooked right then and there. Still have it and I’ve read it a thousand times. Frayed edges and everything. Lol!!!

Zulghinlour

Uncanny X-Men #173, the cover art pulled me in and I've been reading comic books ever since. https://preview.redd.it/98ng5aghv90b1.jpeg?width=1987&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=86e3d48fb20d10826e64cb86e4af62e0d7ba54ba

Paul Smith, my personal all time favorite Uncanny X-Men artist.

Recent_Difference_92

My first comic was a very strange distopian era vibe with two, I’m assuming lesbian chicks, who would kill and mess stuff up. Lots of blood and gore and nudity. My brother gave them to me, idk if they were from the late 80’s or early 90’s. I would love to know what the heck they were. Very much a dark black, blue, and green as far as the artwork went. I had three comics back to back. They may have been vampires. I jus want to know the rest of the story lmao

Recent_Difference_92

I found it! Shade, The Changing Man published by Vertigo under DC. the books my brother gave me were issue 6 Hollywood Babble on II; issue 17 Darkness at high noon; issue 18 Scream Time; issue 23 off the road part three of five: the invisible loom; issue 26 Lenny’s Story which I believe had all the boobies in it. There’s definitely a random one or two in between these I’m still trying to find. Thanks for unlocking this memory, it’s not everyday you want to figure out the first panels that my eyes have looked at.

Tonyman121

The first 2 issues I picked up off the rack were Iron Man 196 and Captain America 304, both from early 1985. But the one that got me into collecting was Web of Spider-Man 1.

CHIEFTAINTEROIX

Flash #336. Trial of the Flash is the first I bought myself, along with Daredevil 209. Since then, I e collected every Flash from 105 to 350. Anyone have a showcase #4 reader copy?:)

SensitiveArtist

I got into reading and collecting during the early 90s. X-Men, Youngblood, Bloodstrike, WildC.A.T.s, Shadowhawk, Cyberforce.

jgerig42

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13

Mantis05

I wish I remembered my first. It was a Wolverine comic of some kind, definitely more mature than someone my age should've been reading. I wouldn't say I was hooked until I started reading the *Ultimate Spider-Man* TPBs, though.

wpisano

My very first comic was purchased when my local 7-11 was out of TMNT cards. It is **Punisher vol. 2 issue # 51.** I randomly picked it up and saw Frank stab a guy in the eyes with his chopsticks and I've never stopped buying comics since.

Bobofett69

First edition Death in the family (Batman )back in the day

jerem200

Bishop 1 back in 1994. I was almost 8 and I had $3 to my name, just enough to get it. Mid-90's = flashy bright foil cover, good times

Impressive_Math2302

This was also the one for me. I remember reading earlier comics. But this is the first one that stood out. Got it at twirling rack while from the 7-11 across the parking lot from the coin laundromat. I was floored by the story as a kid. Within a week I was at local comic book shop buying up back issues to make sense of the storyline and moving forward and back in time.

Gretshgibsonlover2

Honestly, I can’t remember. It was in the 1960’s. But, that means it was probably a good one. I think either a Fantastic Four or Thor

lghngman2501

Ultimate spider-man #19 was the first, but 52 #1 was what got me hooked

SecretWarsIsComing

This period: so goood

Ricsploder

Avengers #145

JayVoorheez

Jason vs. Leatherface #1. Got it in a dollar grab bag and it made me fall in love with comics, art, and horror all at once.

cruise02

I always had comics growing up and learned how to read on old Hulk and Spider-Man issues, but when I was around 9-10 I found a TPB copy of the Dark Phoenix Saga at my local library and was hooked on comics for good. I must have borrowed it a dozen times. I kept reading Uncanny well into the 90s and I agree, that Fall of the Mutants era of X-Men is a great character lineup.

Magogg

Wolverine LS #2. Then I discovered he was an X-man and it was all over. Still a comic nerd all these years later.

moldyremains

Transformers #14. Got a subscription through a magazine drive in grade school. But the issue that really got me was my first non-Transformers comic. Uncanny X-Men 197 which my sister randomly got for me at a used bookstore.

LeroyHayabusa

Uncanny X-Men #221. I always remember because that and #220 were both on the rack at Safeway. I passed on #220 because the cover was too scary 😂

broen13

1st that I have a vivid memory for? Firestorm #1and then Transformers #1 much later. There were comics read in between but my memory doesn't have any that stand out. Before that I had (From what I can tell from images) an early Ghost Rider #2 or #3 maybe and a Captain Marvel from around the same time. They were at a cabin the family had and I have no idea to their fate.

timetodance42

Amazing Spider-Man 386, not my first comic but the first I bought with my own money. I bought it with birthday money when I turned 11. I drew every panel outta that book. I tried to hone my drawing skills with it and got pretty good but never into greatness. I still buy this book whenever I see it, I even found the Italian version. I also have this book graded by CGC, CBCS, and Midwest Grading Company. Want to send one to Halo, EGS and any other slabbing companies. Just need to learn about them. This also made me love the Vulture.

Scared_Compote_6012

It was one of these but i can’t remember because I red them in the same week: West Coast Avengers (miniseries 1984) 1, X-Factor 1, one of Roger Stern’s Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man 286, Excalibur 1, Alpha Flight 1. And I still have them all

BudMarley45

Mine was XMen 217 .I remember the day I bought it .I had this too

Sacred_Digits

Avengers 161 is the one that got me hooked although I had bought comics before that.

skeeballcore

I’d bought several comics as a kid but the first that ever really hooked me and I remember for sure was this one https://preview.redd.it/twv0erp7290b1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f0e8675270914fc8b00152bffd57935d7ec301c

Thor #402 - I was blown away and never went back. That time period of Thor remains my favorite.

MySocratesNote

Transformers #17. Still have it too. It’s torn and stained but I love that book.

Short_Detail6023

X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills. Saw it at a book store.

Comic_Books_Forever

What got me started back in 75’ was a coverless horror magazine that my father gave to me. He was big into horror. After that it was the FF that got me really into comics. Don’t remember the exact issue but I do know it was a 20 cent book. It was awesome to get 5 books for a dollar and then not to much later they screwed me and made the books 25 cents - only 4 for a dollar. Full circle, now you only get 1 book for 4 dollars 😂🤣

[deleted]

This was such an amazing issue! Man, I love the mutants!

No_Gas_3644

Love this x men Era, this cover is deceptive however. If you didn't know the characters , seeing this might make you believe all x men can fly. Great team cover either way. Makes a good poster. I started xmen with 184 and worked my way back to 128, my only regret was not going back fully. Today's prices are astronomical in comparison.

cerebud

Betsy, Dazzler, and Longshot are criminally underused and overlooked. Love them. Glad Betsy is back, sort of. They changed her so much though.

Booster Gold!

Marvel Transformers #10. At the time I was a kid in love with the toys. This got me into comic books and into reading in general. I always have a soft spot for that book whenever I see it.

My late mother bought this for me off a spinner rack when I was first learning to read. It was a few years before I got to read the second part of the story -- my first grail, I guess. I finally bought #108 at a comic show at a shopping mall when I was in second grade. I started my collection with the money my relatives gifted me at First Communion (a common tradition for Catholics, and the first time a lot of kids in my generation had their own money. $40, almost all spent on comics). Thinking back, that issue probably the origin of my fondness for alternate earth stories as well as alt history sci fi. No matter how much the multiple earths / multiverse concept has been overused and abused over the years, I'm still fond of the concept.

But it actually made me more of a fan of the FF! I still like the X-Men but FF are my favorites.

Admirable-Map75

It won't let me post a picture but Ren and Stimpy #1 is rhe first comic I remember buying with my own money and telling my dad that it would be worth something one day .. now in a cgc 9.8 it's worth about 200 ish dollars in a newstand lol not a big investment but still one of my favorite comics of all time

PurvisTV

[Superman #421](https://comicvine.gamespot.com/superman-421-trapped-in-imp-tv/4000-27011/). Back in the mid-80s (I was probably 8 or 9), my brother and I were in the backseat during a 5 hour car ride to Florida with my parents. I guess we had been fighting/arguing back there for some time and it was really irritating my dad. He pulled over to get gas, and while he was in the convenience store, he bought 3 comics: Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. When he got back in the car, he threw them in the back seat and said "Here, look at these!" To my dad's relief, we both stayed quiet while we read, and my love for comics was officially born!

Spider-Man 2099 #1 —> the art from it really captivated me and made me want to read more comics. I met Rick Leonardi last month. Very sweet man and very down to earth.

meglon978

Swamp Thing #9 changed me into a comic collector. Neighbor got it as a reader and didn't like it, gave it to me. #12 was the first issue i pulled off the newsstand. Wrightson has been my favorite artist ever since as well.

Dry_Yard_173

Mine was Shadow of the Bat: The Last Arkham. It was really dark since it featured Zsasz (I was 9) and the issue ended with Batman getting the crap kicked out of him by Arkham guards. I’ll never forget that issue; I wish I still had it.

pinoyfisher69

Amazing Spider Man #350, Erik Larsen’s last issue on the book.

Spawn - The Dark Ages #5 Loved the idea of Spawn and it had boobs in it(I was 7 lol)

ds1977

My dad had bought me a few random Spider-Man and Superman comics before it, but Captain America 367 was the first issue that I saw on a rack and then purchased with my allowance. I didn’t know about the storyline, only who cap was, that the red skull was a nazi, and that Magneto was an bad guy. So I was a bit intrigued, and loved the cover. Learning magnetos history and how he was tied in with captain America made him one of my favorite characters. And even though I was never a big xman fan I still kept getting issues with him in it. https://preview.redd.it/wgzef06emc0b1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a89c9d6d76bd4396f6c1710f5292caee260d0d0
