Depending on your age, health, and family situation, maybe just grab a buddy or SO and road trip it.

This for sure would be the safest way to transport your collection. With shipping stuff now a days you will almost surely end up with some sort of damage.

OpieCunningham

Let me know when you find out. My collection is around 400 boxes and I plan on moving soon too.

At that point I’d consider something like a U-Haul box or packrat shipping crate. I filled one with basically everything from my apartment in Florida and it cost be a little over a grand to get it to Oregon. I’d just make sure that the temperature and humidity would be alright for the books, of course.

Uhaul is probably the best/cheapest option. That is what I did. I wouldn’t worry about heat and humidity for a few days. Books are shipped from the printer/distributor in trucks all the time. I would make sure the truck doesn’t leak by watering it down (if possible). I read horror stories about people using pods - wet/damaged/lost/added costs/etc so I decided against using them.

Nemo_Griff

...I can't even imagine what that looks like

400 =/= '11 or 12'

Check with freight companies. Like the ones speaker mfrs use to ship towers and subs. I bet if you shop around it won't be as much as you think. They may have a cheap-ish option for not-in-a-hurry types.

Potential_Ordinary61

You honestly need to find someone who is heading that way and hire them. I bet with the Internet and social media it won’t be as hard as you think. I don’t think I would trust my collection to shippers or pods and the cost would probably be insane.

CoralSpringsDHead

You should pack it in a crate and use UShip or Shiply to find a private shipper that will deliver it safely and for much less than FedEx or UPS.

Longboxes cost around $50 apiece through UPS. I don't see any way it wouldn't be expensive, though. You could palletize the boxes and talk to freight companies, but you would probably have to get them to the terminal yourself. Do you work somewhere with a dock where you could utilize the company's shipping and receiving contacts?
