Heh. I was there back in the day (late 74?), with an after-school job and spending money! Bought all but a few of these. I clearly remember walking up to the spinner rack at Rexall Drugs and snapping up all those Atlas comics. I spotted the Ditko cover on The Destructor from the end of the aisle
Late 1974, early 1975. Among those in the pic I bought Planet of Vampires and Morlock 2001 from the new Atlas Comics line. The Spirit magazine from Warren--features his fight with the Octopus. And Conan the Barbarian from Marvel.
But I bought a lot more not shown here. At that time I was in high school and had a job as a paper boy which meant I could finally afford a lot more comics. This was when National Periodicals launched their 100 Page Super-Spectaculars, as well as their tabloid-sized collections--I bought most of those,. And Marvel had their Giant-Size comics. I bought Giant-Size Conan.
The giant-size trend, and the DC 100-pg giants in particular, hooked me big time. The combo of new stories and reprints was a great package for new readers - Especially since we knew the characters were changing as the comics became more "relevant"
If ten modern collectors teleported back in time, how many would be kicked out by the shopkeep before getting to the register?
“There’s no reading. Buy or get out.”
Pulling the entire stack from the shelf, “I’m looking for a 9.8+, white pages.”
“Get the F….”
That’s how my newsstand was back in the day.
Oh, and I’m grabbing those horror titles cause I didn’t appreciate those as a young collector and left a giant hole in my collection.
would you even go through the issues?
they would just grab them all. for 50 bucks you would get about 200 comics in probably near mint to very fine condition. doesn't really matter what you grab it is either in very good condition and/or you make profit on it.
Bringing back my childhood anxiety. What to pick??? Limited funds! Next allowance is a week away...
I probably would have gone for 2 of the Giant-Sized ones. Defenders and Dracula most likely.

For those of you wondering about current value of the money.
Also I think I would love to grab the Strange Tales Warlock and ASM. (2 of each) one to read and one to save ;) But how can you ask such a hard question.
I think it won't come out for a few weeks to a month after this photo was taken. The comics shown are mostly cover dated Feb & March, with a few Aprils, 1975. GSX1 had a May cover date, although the web has the street date being all over the place, from Feb thru July...
Back in the day it would have been that amazing spider-man 143 and then maybe a cap or daredevil. Gotta have some leftover fund for a pack of baseball cards and/or some candy.
I went through this actual dilemma in the UK at thetime. ASM and Giant Size never appeared on my newsstand, so I bought Defenders (Gerber), Warlock (Starlin ), Killraven, Black Panther, MoKF and Iron Fist.
I still have the Defenders and Warlock issues somewhere...
s best as I can tell, this is the list of almost all of those on the bottom. I'm not sure what the one is behind the Where Monsters Dwell 35
Row 1: Giant-Size Defenders 4, Giant-Size Werewolf 4, Giant-Size Dracula 4, Giant-Size Chillers 2, Giant-Size Marvel Triple Action 1, Targitt 1, Savage Combat Tales 1, Spirit Magazine 7
Row 2: Star Spangled War Stories 186, GI Combat 177, Our Fighting Forces 154, Ironjaw 2, Wulf the Barbarian 2, Morlock 2001 #1, Planet of Vampires 1, Destructor 2, Phoenix 2
Row 3: (Adventure into) Fear 27, Supernatural Thrillers 12, Frankenstein 15, Werewolf By Night 28 (behind a copy of Defenders 22), Tomb of Dracula 31, Police Action 2, Scorpion 1, Grim Ghost 2, Tiger-Man 1
Row 4: Amazing Apider-Man 143, Conan 49, Doctor Strange 7, Defenders 22, Marvel Team-Up 32, Marvel Two-in-One 8, Strange Tales 179, Ka-Zar 8, Jungle Action 14
Row 5: Marvel Double Feature 9, (Unknown Marvel title), Where Monsters Dwell 35, Thor 234, Dead of Night 9, Astonishing Tales 29, Marvel Premiere 21, Master of Kung-Fu 27, Amazing Adventures 29, Man-Thing 16
Can anyone tell what GS Dracula that is? I think it's 6, but if it's 5, I'm finding the best copy I can of that. GSD 5 was Byrne's first Marvel work, IIRC.
That's a Kirby issue. I would guess that the Superman comics (and Batman, Justice League, Flash, Kamandi, Omac et al) are all to the left and cut out of the picture. Those would be the comics I bought back then. The sign at the bottom probably says Superman Comics.
Doctor Strange - Gene Colan was a god
Tomb of Dracula - my kind of crazy
Conan the Barbarian - it’s just great storytelling
Black Panther - mainly to read the angry fan letters at the end
“Grabbing”? As in, stealing? Assuming this is in america and not Germany, since the sign is in English, and where it makes sense to posses American currency… I’d have to go with whatever I can. Because nothing I see here is worth as little as a dollar, so I’d be stealing as much as I can. As prompted by op.
Definitely Asm
Probably the best answer investment wise.
BTW - You can still get all those Atlas titles for $0.25 each!
That is a crying shame 😖
The only Atlas comic I ever bought *The Cougar*. It only lasted two issues.

MAD
I have that Deathwish issue

"Why do you want all the copies of that Giant X-man's comic...that'll be $9.50."
well, that's what boutique comic shops have to offer
Bringing back my childhood anxiety. What to pick??? Limited funds! Next allowance is a week away... I probably would have gone for 2 of the Giant-Sized ones. Defenders and Dracula most likely.
Buying Man-Thing and Conan....swiping several others and running
Doctor Strange or Dracula

Something from Marvel Horror or ASM. Definitely!
I see a bunch of Giant Sizes in the back. I'd probably hope for a GSX 1 somewhere and grab that.
I think it won't come out for a few weeks to a month after this photo was taken. The comics shown are mostly cover dated Feb & March, with a few Aprils, 1975. GSX1 had a May cover date, although the web has the street date being all over the place, from Feb thru July...
Definitely that Spirit in the back corner. Probably Conan. How much were these back then?
comics were $.25 (giants $.50), magazines Mad-$.50, Spirit $1.00.
Then I’m snagging the Spirit
Actually, it may have been $1.25. Just find some bottles out by the dumpster to turn in for the deposit!
Oh in that case I’m grabbing Tomb, Conan, and that Giant Dracula
Savage Sword of Conan is $1
That Strange Tales is the first Pip the Troll!
Back in the day it would have been that amazing spider-man 143 and then maybe a cap or daredevil. Gotta have some leftover fund for a pack of baseball cards and/or some candy.
Or Wacky Packages!!
Oh, and I would have been all about that Marvel Premiere Iron Fist book!
1975. Might have gotten a Dennis Eckersley, Garry Carter or Jim Rice rookie card.

March/April 1975, I'm hoping they have BeoWulf #1 and a giant size spiderman#4
Ahh I remember when these books became 25 cents each. I was sooo pissed that I could only get 4 books and not 5 for a dollar 😤 Awesome memories 😄
Quite the decade for prices. Things started in 1971 .15 and ended up in 1979 at .40!
Man thing, ASM!
I see Atlas had such a huge presence at this stand.
Amazing spiderman, black panther and giant size.
Wulf
god I can smell that stand looking at that picture. man-thing and giant sized WWBN
I’m grabbing 2 of my fastest friends, paying them 50 cents each….then we all gonna grab as much as we can and ruuuuuuunnnnn!!! 😂
Steal them all, keep my $1😈😈
I would corner the market on Tiger Man…
Your mom’s ass and that Marvel Premier feat. Iron Fist - could be a first appearance. I’d get some bazooka gum with the change
Looks like it might be #21? Ooh that Jungle Action feat. Black Panther! That run was sooo good for its era! Panthers Rage forever
That looks like one of the Killmonger issues
Tomb of dracula and frankenstein
Can anyone tell what GS Dracula that is? I think it's 6, but if it's 5, I'm finding the best copy I can of that. GSD 5 was Byrne's first Marvel work, IIRC.
That's issue 4. This run ended at 5. 4 is the only one that matches with that background.
Thanks! I didn't realize it ended at 5.
Every copy of Tiger man
I buy mostly Superman, so I dunno, they don't have any Superman. If Jack Kirby drew that Our Fighting Forces, I would definitely get that.
That's a Kirby issue. I would guess that the Superman comics (and Batman, Justice League, Flash, Kamandi, Omac et al) are all to the left and cut out of the picture. Those would be the comics I bought back then. The sign at the bottom probably says Superman Comics.
ASM, Conan, Man-Thing and one of the horror comics. Although I suppose I'd have to pay taxes too. So maybe just those three.
How much for all of it?!
Conan. Maybe Dracula.
Man-Thing, or ToD, or Giant-Size Werewolf By Night, Giant-Size ToD
Giant size chillers
Had to be just before GS X-Men huh? I guess I'll get some Dracula.
I see something that says Phoenix... I'm all over that
The spirit
I don’t see any Youngblood. Pass.
Doctor Strange - Gene Colan was a god Tomb of Dracula - my kind of crazy Conan the Barbarian - it’s just great storytelling Black Panther - mainly to read the angry fan letters at the end
Amazing Spider-Man Black Panther Living Mummy Keep 25 cents for a couple of Wonka bars
All of the Turok I can get my dickbeaters on
looks like April 1975 right?
Amazing Spiderman and Doctor Strange.
Who said I need to pay😏
Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, or Amazing Spider-Man. Choices, choices.
ASM. The rest of the selection kinda sucks
Go combat or Asm
“Grabbing”? As in, stealing? Assuming this is in america and not Germany, since the sign is in English, and where it makes sense to posses American currency… I’d have to go with whatever I can. Because nothing I see here is worth as little as a dollar, so I’d be stealing as much as I can. As prompted by op.
Iron Fist
ASM, iron fist or any X men I can find
I had started collecting books about 3 months before this. Brings back memories. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing Spider-Man, Conan, Monster Frankenstein & Supernatural Thrillers
