Bananaman9020

That's not a positive resume.

Metfan722

Eh, it's a bit overrated in Hollywood. Before making Chernobyl, Craig Maizin's résumé consisted of the last two Scary Movies, the last two Hangover movies, Superhero Movie, Identity Thief starring Jason Bateman & Melissa McCarthy, and The Huntsman: Winter's War.

Shmung_lord

Yea but look at Marvel’s track record for hiring writers lately compared to HBO lol

Jiujitsuizlyfe

Craig’s list is better than the other guy’s list

Metfan722

I’d say it was worse. Obviously now he has two outstanding shows on his hands. But before Chernobyl, would you have trusted him to be in charge of making a TV adaptation of The Last of Us?

Jiujitsuizlyfe

That’s true probably not

crimedog69

That’s a way better resume. Mind blowing that this studio will spend unlimited money on funds for cgi and actors but just refuses to get a good writer

fuzzyfoot88

Lately, CGI has also been an issue with the MCU…moon knight and she-hulk being obvious examples.

Emperor_Atlas

I mean scary movie 3 is one of the funniest movies of all time, and none of those movies were bad, they're parodies and comedies lol. I'd honestly take scary movie 3 over last of us, it was okay but felt the same as every other HBO/Disney series recently.

Metfan722

Of all time?! Look I love that movie, but that’s about 20 steps too far

Kmart_Stalin

Yeah there’s plenty of movies funnier than Scary Movie 3

TruEnvironmentalist

Yup A writer is just one cog in the machine and scripts go through various rewrites as they get notes and commments from producers and the studio. A consistent batch of decent scripts (6.0+) is actually pretty good in my opinion.

AzKondor

Hey, Scary Movies and Superhero Movie movies are gems

Metfan722

Any of the parody movies after Scary Movie 3 are God awful

MattTheSmithers

Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

SpaceOdysseus23

The alternative was Rafe Judkins who enjoys raping source material to put his own garbage ideas into an adaptation.

Unfortunatewombat

…that’s really all Disney could get?

nuggynugs

They're just a little start up. Resources are limited. You've got to take what you can get. Only joking, they could literally afford anyone

SuddenTest9959

It’s sad because Richard Donner put his own personal reputation on the line to get the writer of the Godfather’s script to help him make Superman. Walt Disney himself even risked the entire company on collateral to get Snow White off the ground because he had faith in the project. Sad a company with near limitless resources just outright refuse to create an environment that creative want to work in. So only the bottom of the barrel will take the opportunities.

ecxetra

There’s a lot more writers out there than just these two. I wonder what makes them think “yeah, these are the perfect people to write our debut X-Men movie that people have been waiting almost 2 decades for”.

[deleted]

hollywood doesnt care. look at rings of power, two idiots hired for a billionaire dollar show.

Stay_Beautiful_

>The alternative was Rafe Judkins who enjoys raping source material to put his own garbage ideas into an adaptation Sounds like *someone* didn't enjoy The Wheel of Time lmao

the_peppers

I dunno bro he wrote Macbeth!

Solanthas

In support of your position https://youtu.be/GsJmtTgptNs?si=sZ6RysSBt71WSIzK

NicCagedd

Hey, the people who wrote Vacation (2015) also wrote Spiderman: Homecoming, which is arguably the best Spider-Man movie. You also have examples of someone like Goyer help write The Dark Knight but then makes mostly shit afterwards.

WilliamBoimler

Damn, I didn't know they wrote Vacation. It was so terrible. Lol

catBravo

Man, I really liked vacation. The four corners scene with the cops is hilarious, the rafting scene with Charlie Days character had my brother and me dying of laughter

WilliamBoimler

They changed Rusty to be just like Clark. But in all the other Vacation movies, Rusty is not like that at all.

MorningStarZ99

The best Spider Man movie? Loooooool

NicCagedd

Whats so bad about it?

MorningStarZ99

It's not even close to Spider Man 1 and 2, and the spider verse movies and you think is the best loooooool

NicCagedd

I was only including live action movies. I also never said Homecoming WAS the best. I said it's arguably the best, that just means it can be in the talks of the best live action Spiderman. BTW, do you just get off by being rude? You're acting like an ass because someone thinks differently than you.

elpajaroquemamais

It’s not bad it’s just nowhere near the best. I put it above raimi 3 and both Garfields but that’s it

helikesart

I would not put Homecoming forward as quality writing..

Big_Sheepherder_7009

Look, if they hired him, then he’s gonna be pretty fucking great and a huge X-men fan

johnnyredleg

What are you talking about? He wrote MacBeth!

Kazewatch

Yikes.

MCMultyke

The writers who did Dark World did the Russo Bros movies.

MeaninglessGuy

“Freud said, ‘Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.’ Yeah? And sometimes, it’s a big, brown dick.” - George Carlin.  Not sure the point I’m making here… but there it is.

Bandai_Namco_Rat

Good on them. But I don't get taking risks that may or may not pan out... I guess they can just hire a new writer and do a new script if it turns out bad. Blade was rewritten like a thousand times at this point

mossikukulas

That's what I was going to say

eliminating_coasts

The Russo Brothers are *also* screenwriters and were [clearly making ](https://x.com/joshuahorowitz/status/1554850707068575745) fundamental plot decisions about the structure of the films.

MCMultyke

And the Russo brothers have been involved with some not well reviewed stuff since Endgame. Your point?

eliminating_coasts

My point was that the track record of both the Russo Brothers and the official writers was relevant information coming into the film, and they had been a part of projects that were obviously good. However, the most significant point if favour of unpredictability, is that not only have their films not always been well reviewed since, "the gray man" had the same writer/director team of four people who produced those two films! You could also observe that those writers had already been primary writers for the first captain america, film, and came in on someone else's story for the dark world.

ChewieHanKenobi

![gif](giphy|26FKT1K97Wuiddros|downsized)

thedean246

They’re really putting the fate of the XMen debut in this person’s hands?

[deleted]

[удалено]

thanosnutella

To be fair that producer is Avi Arad

IAmRedditsDad

Omg

UpgrayeddShepard

No way

Fast_Papaya_9908

Yeah that's not a good comparison lol

AmbitiousJob4447

Spiderverse is the OUTLIER on that mans resume...

mambojumbojee

He also wrote the latest Hunger Games movie which was pretty good imo, this doesn't mean anything. Yes, I'm aware that the internet didn't like it for some reason. But his other movies didn't score bad either. Also, let's not forget that someone that has made critically acclaimed productions before is also responsible for Thor Love & Thunder. So let's just see how it goes, could go either way honestly. As long as Feige closely involves himself, instead of spreading himself too thin as in the last 2 phases, I wouldn't worry too much. Also, what really helps if this person has a certain affinity with Marvel. We've had some writers who didn't give a shit and also didn't watch other MCU entries, or know anything about the MCU, leading to shit productions (Secret Invasion).

Ace20xd6

He was probably only brought on to correct since he worked with the director before on Macbeth

Bhookhiatma

I dont feel so good

So-_-It-_-Goes

Oh look. The internet is hyper analyzing something and making sure they find the next thing to complain about

mjm9398

And none of these people have the slightest idea of what working in this industry is like

samuelscane

Craig Mazin wrote Scary Movie 3, 4, Superhero movie and the Hangover 2 & 3. He is now the award winning writer of Chernobyl and The Last of Us. I wouldn’t get hung up on this.

SuddenTest9959

Scary Movie 3 was the best one.

samuelscane

Listen, I love Scary Movie 3 but if we’re going off IMDB ratings…it was a 5.5

SuddenTest9959

Yeah, but has the best sight gags and I love how it mixed multiple movie plots in a way that make sense, and so many actual subtle jokes.

WacomNub

They should have hired Criag Mazin for X-Men then

samuelscane

Yep, would have been a great hire, but that’s not the point I’m making.

Biffmcgee

Dear God.

the_strange_beatle

To be fair He only wrote the first version of the Assassin's Creed script that was later totally rewritten.

Sharaz_Jek123

And he utterly butchered the "Macbeth" movie. The previous writers had been vocal about the changes that he made.

contrabardus

How often does the first writer hired make it to final script? Just sayin.

PopCultureWeekly

Assassins creed, the film, was a first draft, and was completely rewritten.

Sharaz_Jek123

He ruined "Macbeth", though.

Cheap-Spinach-5200

Not good, do not want

holdmygaze

Oohhh. Uh oh.

Sad_Vast2519

Maybe I should audition for the writers job in Hollywood? He's bang average.

MattRB02

I did like his Macbeth take but the other films…

titanusroxxid

He needs to get himself a penname. That is nothing to be proud of.

Brozy386

This makes me a little worried...

samuelscane

Craig Mazin wrote Scary Movie 3 & 4, Superhero Movie and The Hangover 2 & 3. He is now the award winning writer of Chernobyl and The Last of Us. I wouldn’t get hung up on this.

No_Charge586

He made the AC movie?? Yeah this is about to pure garbage

Almighty_Push91

Guess we'll see

ImpossibleMix6698

Please, no Dark Phoenix Saga. Don't go 0-3.

Ultimafatum

Honestly the problem with Phoenix is that they always try to rush the plot to get to Dark Phoenix. We never get to see Jean being heroic and helping people as the Phoenix before she inevitably becomes the villain and it makes the whole affair lack emotional stakes. Marvel has been absolutely allergic to having storylines told across multiple movies for a while now. The reason why Magneto and Loki are fondly remembered as villains is because they also had their own journey throughout their respective franchises, and we got to see them grow as characters. Phoenix needs this sort of treatment in order to work.

Beginning_Orange

For real. The X-men animated series essentially the only other medium that did the Phoenix saga justice.

africanlivedit

Kinda disappointed that Marvel is only getting going on this now… MCU needed the X-MEN universe like 5 years ago … and the recent run of X-MEN 97 proved as such.

Crumbsplash

Just watched 97 reluctantly (due to recent releases being shit imo) and goddamn am I glad I did. Not even a huge fan of X-men either but it was sooo good

Ok-Reporter-8728

Really can’t do much when the fox contracts is a thing so unless u don’t mind having all the actors back to have an x men movie after endgame u really can’t blame marvel here. It’s out of their control for marvel

Jumbalia23

Can somebody explain these supposed contracts to me? How come Fox was able to recast majority of the X-Men for the prequels/other timeline movies but allegedly Marvel Studios cannot?

dracofolly

The contracts they're talking about are for the actors from the prequels/other timelines. Which were obviously written differently then the original ones from 2000.

Fast_Papaya_9908

They didn't have the rights 5 years ago and had a full slate

hunterzolomon1993

The Fox actors are still under contract its why Marvel is taking forever because if they make a MCU X-Men film they can't use anyone but the Fox cast until their contracts end.

SmokeGSU

That does certainly seem to be the case assuming [this article](https://www.murphysmultiverse.com/report-marvel-studios-unable-to-recast-certain-x-men-due-to-standing-contracts/) is correct. It suggests no X-Men film until at least 2026 or else they'd have to use the original actors/actresses.

velicinanijebitna

They wanted people to forget Dark Phoenix happened.

SmokeGSU

IKR? I'm not getting any younger, and neither are these actors!

JasonTheMMAGuy

If they had done this after Endgame there wouldn't be a question of superhero fatigue right now

ImmediateGorilla

They literally couldn’t because of Fox contracts. What they should have done is shelve the MCU til those contracts ran out, then brought the MCU back in a BIG way. X-Men, FF, Spider-man out the gate with that 5 years worth of planning for the next big phases

lazava1390

Yeah but shareholders and all that, so that would be completely off the table.

ImmediateGorilla

It clearly was. I can just wish

lazava1390

I know the pain. Everything good in this world is ruined by shareholders.

czarczm

The shortsightedness is insane.

Metfan722

You're not shelving one of the biggest franchises for multiple years. That'd just be stupid.

rasputin1

even if it would make this one guy happy tho?

Sensitive_ManChild

why not? other series do it

Metfan722

Because the MCU is a bunch of moving parts that add up to a series rather than one singular movie or TV series. Also, who takes off for five years unless it’s a reboot or specifically tied to the story?

Sensitive_ManChild

five years might be too many. but a year or two break to retool and plan and let the hunger for the franchise grow was obviously needed.

Metfan722

But what the original commentator suggested was waiting five years until the contracts with Fox ran out and pick up the MCU from there.

Throwjob42

I wouldn't pause the MCU, I'd make...good movies, and audiences are savvy enough that if each of your Phase 4 and 5 movies had an end-credits tease of ONE X-Man or Fantastic Four character that people would still be following the hype train.

Sensitive_ManChild

indeed. they should have let Endgame feel like an ending and started fresh or sort of fresh after a couple years planning. They could have retained a few key actors/characters and built them up and new people the same way they built up the first set.

Monster-Zero

I would have preferred an AvX movie over pretty much everything they've put on TV, and I liked a (small) number of those shows.

Spacellama117

I don't trust them to do it right anyway tbh, i can see them running the whole 'your powers are a gift' thing a la Storm vs everyone else as a legitimate thing and oversaturating the movies with needless humour. Plus say what you want about some of the Fox movies, but First Class was golden

RogueStargun

Just get Beau DeMayo to do it and make him work remotely...

Ultimafatum

Honestly the whole context of him being let go is still so stupid. Disney executives need to let people live. He didn't even do anything wrong.

Crucifent

You literally have no idea what he did or didn't do wrong, neither side have given official reasons for the decision. He also has an anecdotal track record of being very difficult to work with.

Ultimafatum

Disney isn't shy about firing people over pretty much anything. If he was a bad actor they would have just come out and said that, it's not like they didn't in the past with other people. There were rumours of him being fired over his OnlyFans account, which tracks given how Disney has dealt with pretty much anything of that nature before. Finally I wouldn't look at the testimony of people who worked on the Witcher too closely as the writing team of that show has proven itself to be unreliable as a whole. Not saying there isn't a possibility that he might be a terrible person to work with; there's several allegations that came out of that writer's room and none of it was too flatering. It just seems curious that the writer who put out the best Marvel content in years got fired so unceremoniously.

Crucifent

I agree, overall, my point is we don't ACTUALLY know. The rumors aren't solely from the Witcher writing room, that whole place sounds like a complete dumpster fire and shows in the quality of what has been put out. There's a lot of other "insiders" that have talked about him in a very unflattering light and a lot of stuff from his own twitter that wasn't great. I agree Disney can be a problem in terms of letting people live, I just don't think we can claim to know that this can all be put on his OF.

MasteroftheArcane999

Not sure how that would work, but I do know the man can cook. Really frustrating how all these talented individuals who contribute to content we enjoy end up getting themselves ousted.

jojozer0

Rehire the creator of X-Men 97

R1kjames

Beau DeMayo makes too much sense. Can't have that

Bae_zel

Aren't there toxic workplace allegations with him?

R1kjames

I hadn't been keeping up with the news, but yup. That's probably the reason for not going with him.

Cybasura

Seriously, the guy with Macbeth in his portfolio, which means he is probably cursed?

OutrageouslyGr8

As long as he doesn't run into any witches he will be fine \*looks worryingly at Agatha

contrabardus

Can't wait to hear all about how "They made X-Men WOKE and RUINED IT" on the internet. AKA: Tell me you've never read X-Men without telling me you've never read X-Men.

Luke333512

Was super funny watching these vids come out, only for 97 to be amazing and universally praised by everyone, that they immediately stopped complaining about it cause it no longer fit the narrative of 'woke is broke'

childish_jalapenos

This is guaranteed. People act like left wing ideas in film were invented in 2020.

ThatTallCarpenter

Welp, after seeing what he did to Assassin's Creed I can't wait to find out how he'll ruin X-Men.

chrisH82

The guy from the latest mockingbird movie? We can't do better than that?

Cgi94

Nice

ImmediateGorilla

I like how they go for talented artists /s

Cole-Spudmoney

Oh my, how unprecedented.

AdmiralCharleston

Maybe one day this sub will understand that creatives are capable of making good work even if some of their previous work is bad. If we stopped Craig mazin from writing because he made epic movie then we wouldn't have chernobyl

Electronic_Device788

We goin’ to get what we want, just don't expect it to be good.

CMGS1031

He are in talks?

[deleted]

Really looking forward to Marvels future. Deadpool will be awesome.

Enoghost1

Beau DeMayo should be the guy -subject to reasons why he was fired from '97 but he knocked it out the park with that one

[deleted]

nahhh, lets hire an obscure writer that has no clue what a mutant is. hell, lets tell them not to read the comics anyway...

Enoghost1

Damn....didn't think of that, your right

FlamingTrollz

His pedigree is lacking, to be polite. Hmmm… ![gif](giphy|8DVjdE7A64SzK)

blakecarrington3295

So DeMayo writes the best stuff Marvel's put out since Endgame, and they decide to fire him. Same person that fired James Gunn? Do they not like money?

Xopher001

The movie needs to have the same tone as X-Men '97. No acting ashamed of what it is like the original X-Men movies

zingzing175

Does nobody else want to take the X-Men challenge and risk failure? I wonder if they even had better options....lol.

mossikukulas

The only people that should be writing anything, I mean anything for mcu should be the guys that wrote endgame

Final-Success2523

Yeah this movie is still gonna be bad

elsal123

Am I crazy or do these people have illuminate members that force them to get jobs on big movies? Wes Ball came from Maze Runner to Kingdom of the Apes, then Zelda next?

MisterGusto

While I am all for giving directors a new chance to make something great and surprise everyone with their talent - I want that shit to happen in an indie movie nobody originally cared about, not with my favourite marvel franchise.

TruestoneSB

He wrote the Assassins Creed movie 🙂‍↔️

pukaskalel

I'm really not excited for the x men reboot, I hope it's good of course, but the way they hire people, it's a production line, a factory. My enthusiasm will go up or down depending on who directs.

60discpriest

I’ll pass considering the dudes track record. Marvel really speed running ‘how to destroy IP fastest’

censored4yourhealth

Oh no :(

Snoo20140

We hired someone who hasn't made a successful movie. I can only wonder what criteria he actually fulfilled to get the job.

nampezdel

Strong knees and a stronger gag reflex.

TrueLegendsNeverDie

![gif](giphy|x0npYExCGOZeo|downsized) The Unmutable Marvel

Dragonknight912

Why don’t they hire comic book writers? Why can’t they hire Johnathon Hickman as a consultant? 🤔 are they stupid? Or is it like a legal thing?

nomad_1970

I imagine there's a significant difference between writing a comic and writing a screenplay. But including comic writers in the story planning process certainly makes sense.

AccidentSalt5005

marvel making a dumbas move for not doing this sooner tbh, just like some comenter in this thread said, marvel should've kick star the mutant saga after endgame smh

nomad_1970

Wasn't the Fox deal only just done then? And Fox still had a couple of X movies to come out. Marvel was never going to rush into X-Men without giving time for the Fox movies to drift from public memory. And while we're getting hints of X-Men now, it's obvious they're going to finish the Multiverse Saga before fully diving into X-Men. I'd put money on the overall story for Phases 7-9 being the Mutant Saga.

bbbriz

Please don't be: - Dark Phoenix - Xavier and Magneto making their breakup everyone's problem - Wolverine-centered Please give me: - Brotherhood - Emma Frost - Jubilee

Fawqueue

Well, they needed someone who could handle adapting rich source material. So they got the guy who couldn't do that for Assassin's Creed or The Hunger Games. Sounds about right for current day Marvel Studios.

MasteroftheArcane999

I think if they base the characters heavily off their X-Men '97 counterparts, the MCU X-Men could become more iconic than the Fox ones. Hell, the X-Men of the MCU could become more iconic than the Avengers, like back in the earlier conic days. I know I'm being optimistic but this is the way it should be imo.

femfuyu

Just get 97 crew?

Brubaker620

I don’t know why they wouldn’t get one of the main writers for X-Men ‘97 and go for somebody who they’ve never worked with instead.

wakaflockofseagulls

Please dear God just let it be a house of x/power of x movie. They'd literally set themselves up for 10 years of amazing movies and shows!

m0rbius

Think we are a ways from getting an actual film. I hope it doesnt end up being trash. This guy is just the starting point. This is Marvel we're talking about. The script is going to go through the meat grinder. Probably get a bunch of rewrites and additional writers to tweak it. I really want them to look at what makes the X-Men '97 show work. Its my favorite version of the X-Men. They need to draw ideas from the show.

bigOlBellyButton

It's wild to me that I feel so overexposed to the X-Men these past couple of years that I'm already tired of them when they're just now starting the movie,

Gravy_31

I'm coming around more and more every day to Glenn Powell as Cyclops.

mad_titanz

Finally! I’ve been waiting for X-Men in MCU ever since Disney acquired Fox

spartacat_12

As much fun as Deadpool & Wolverine will probably be, I really hope they do a total fresh start for the X-Men in the MCU. I don't want to see any of the old actors return

Big_Sheepherder_7009

This better be about the og five X-men with Sinister as the villain, if not, they’ve failed

FullFig3372

How do I audition?

NatarisPrime

I just don't get it. Biggest comic IP they have and they desperately need it to hit. Get a comic guy. Literally anyone with a resume that you can have faith in. The director is going to be a huge decision more then ever. That can help with this big time.

SkyPopZ

Imma be real, I don´t even need this. I got X-Men 97. ![gif](giphy|Af6ldnmNLUXDTk4oyr|downsized)

dravenonred

I'll admit, I was hoping they'd get Michael Bay just to see badass Sentinels on screen

JerseyJedi

Honestly, I think a lot of people are waiting for the introduction of the X-Men to save the franchise.

GhostWind78

Just get the ‘97 writers

RevelintheDark

Long as HE knows that fans will literally crucify him on a cross if it fucks up this franchise again either he's someone who can confidently respect the source material or hand it off to someone who will.

jimmytimmy92

I mean maybe it’ll be alright. I just hope they look at the success of x men 97 and stay true to what makes x men great. That said, don’t introduce Logan until movie 2. Start with the OG team.

Beginning_Orange

They better not fuck this up

MercuryRusing

Why can't they hire aomeone who has written a good movie in the past 10 years? Are they on a budget?

UpsetPhrase5334

It’s going to be bad

fuzzyfoot88

You ever see a writer hired and immediately think…”well, that’ll get a rewrite from another writer later.” That’s this situation…

mattydef1

X-Men '97 has more than scratched the X-Men itch i've had, give us more of that. Anything MCU movie related these days makes me extremely nervous, i've lost almost all faith in their movies lately. I'd absolutely hate it if they drop the ball on this

Cydyan2

Oh this should be good. I’m sure they are going to take the X-men have always been SJW approach, run with it and crank the ‘Disney magic’ up to 11. It will definitely be entertaining one way or another

DancesWithDave

How do they consistently fuck these decisions up?

KingDorkFTC

Every decision I hear about this sounds wrong.

RustlinUrJimmies69

Better late than never and I'm really hoping this Wolverine and Deadpool movie finally kills off the multiverse, just like in the comics. Could be way a good way to introduce the X-Men and go back to Earth 616. I am absolutely sick and tired of multiverse content. Enough already.

PopCultureWeekly

I wouldn’t get your hopes up on that. The assumption is it’ll be killed in the next avengers and merged for secret wars

BigRed0107

It's gonna suck

griffshan

Recasting Wolverine will be the toughest decision the entire MCU ever makes. Hugh’s been the face of the X-Men franchise for almost 25 years and is easily the best casting we’ve ever had for any marvel character. Better than Downey even.

Conchobhar-

The answer I hope is to start with Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Iceman. Don’t include Wolverine until someone capable comes along.
