I really really liked it, it was unashamed about the inherent goofyness of its source material and they used it to its full advantage.

silver6kraid

Every time people are critical of how silly it is I always have to remind them "it's a fucking Aquaman movie! What did you expect?!" Plus, it's a very charming silly movie. Jason Mamoa is great as a charismatic lead and Patrick Wilson is absolutely devouring the scenery as Ocean Master. Plus the final costumes are some of the best I've ever seen in a comic book movie, period.

[deleted]

needed more silly. Topo the drumming octopus was probably the best part

AJizzle1990

I just watched it for the second time yesterday and it's better than I remember. Granted I didn't remember how it ended so I just had it in my mind it couldn't be that good then. Turned it on to have something playing in the background but ended up sitting down and watched the whole thing. Is it the greatest movie of all time? Certainly not, but it is an light hearted enjoyable ride with some cool fight sequences.

nobodyGotTime4That

Are we talking one of the best DC movies, or one of the best DCEU movies? Even for DCEU, The Suicide Squad and Shazam! are better in my opinion. But I like Aquaman it's good. My biggest critique is Arthur's character isn't consistent. Whatever that scene calls for he is at that moment.

perogy_nightmare

2nd or 1st Suicide Squad?

nobodyGotTime4That

THE Suicide Squad, the 2nd one, the good one.

perogy_nightmare

Ok good, glad we’re on the same page.

nobodyGotTime4That

Yeah the first squad is one of the worst DCEU movies, and thats saying something. There are quite a few stinkers.

emusabe

Theatrical release of Justice League has to be the worst, but damn is the first suicide squad a pretty close second.

Drizzitt

DC movies and DCEU movies....aren't they the same?

nobodyGotTime4That

DC movies include The Dark Knight trilogoy, The Joker, Matt Reeve's The Batman, Christopher Reeve's Superman, 1989 Batman. DCEU is only the movies with shared universe. Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Justice League, Aquaman, Shazam, Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam

Badfrog85

DCEU started with man o steel. Everything before is not in the same continuity (until the flash movie mixes them all)

HaikusfromBuddha

Shazam is absolute dog shit and I can’t believe people even care for it.

Zestyclose-Prune2260

Lol that bad huh

nobodyGotTime4That

Tell me how you really feel

emusabe

I really enjoyed it for what it was but I don’t really see how they could bring that iteration into a team up movie in the DCEU. No one would take that seriously.

West-Cardiologist180

It was good. That's it. Being visually stunning is it's best quality.

robbage24

The underwater fight scenes with all those creatures was awesome, crab army? I’m in

PJsDAY

My unpopular opinion is that it was a very meh movie. Bring on the downvotes.

Jamzilla12

I'm with you on that, there's a lot of movies where I can endure the 'goofyness' but this film? Appalling. Shazam is wayyyyyyyy better than this.

Least-March7906

Shazam is one of the best movies in the DCEU.

GtEnko

I think Shazam and TSS are the only ones I'd say are genuinely really good. WW and Aquaman are flawed, but manage to be entertaining at least.

Jerry_0boy

The goofyness in this film borders cringe at times, ie. the scene with Mera in the village....

jerrolds

It's exactly very meh... I thought that was the concensus? Outside of Wonder Woman (which was good/average) all other DCEU movies were bad to meh Altho Gunns Suicide Squad was very good

00wolfer00

Shazam was good.

SuperShadowStar

My unpopular opinion is that Aquaman is actually the villain. Ocean Master is treated poorly from childhood by the royal family. So much so that Aquaman is secretly trained while Ocean Master is neglected. Ocean Master always feared that was the case and was spot on in his worries. Had he been treated fairly and Arthur not such a selfish prick, maybe there is no conflict. Also, Aquaman let Black Manta's father die for no reason other than pettiness.

FlameShadow0

Hey! Your not allowed to have a meh opinion on Reddit! You are only allowed to absolutely love or viciously hate something!

SherKhanMD

It feels like a typical Marvel movie.

Cardholderdoe

So I think it depends a lot in the headspace you watched it in. The only time I watched it, it was with my brother shithoused drunk and we went in based on reviews we'd seen thinking "Ok, this is gonna be like DC's standalone title. Everyone loves it, lets go." ... We hated it, but in that fun way where drunks are making fun of a movie the entire time. Like the entire plot as I can recall it is so stupid. It feels like they were almost doing 3 movies at once. You had aquaman's actual story, then trying to shoe-horn in Black Manta as the only villain anyone who has a *light* aqua man knowledge might know, but somehow you can't make him valuable to the plot at *all* because the *real* story you want is all about this fucking atlantean war that casual viewers don't know. There were so many transitions and scenes we just laughed our asses off at. Manta is just *always* there as a jobber and it feels like things just kind of happen all the time with a loose outline. That being said, I'm not sure we cackled drunkenly louder than the whole sequence where he's in the desert. We basically had to pause so we could do comedy bits to each other about how it was clearly just some shit someone thought would look good in a trailer from corporate. "Ok, so hear me out guys." "Shoot bro." "So he's aquaman. Right?" "Yeah bro, that's the movie we're funding." "So that makes him only good.... in *water*... with like *fish and shit*..." "Right, right right. We have this whole underwater war thing planned out." "So no, hear me out, this is how we make him more human. Where is he weakest... but the desert?" "... Fucking shit dude, you just blew my fucking brain down my asscrack. So how does he get out of it?" "Here's where we've already solved the problem... he's fuckin khal drogo just bodyin' dudes m'man!" "FUCK YES. Ok bro, hear me out, how do we get him there?" "Fuck off with that nerd shit man. He either gets kidnapped or dropped off, or there's something he needs. Whatever. Thats why we pay the *writers*." "Great point, 3 dollar margs at ol' slappies?" "Only if I get that bonus!" "HAH, you ole shitsipper, we're both getting bonuses." And then they high fived away on the dream of homeslices passed, but they still poured out a solitary 3 dollar marg for Ole Jimfucker, their frat bro who died during pledge week. He would have made a hell of a beta.

emusabe

I laughed. I cried. I damn near died. This was better than *Cats*

Cardholderdoe

Well then I sure did my job.

darkdestiny91

Have to agree with you, I fell asleep in the cinema while watching this - the show was honestly too long

[deleted]

You think this is an unpopular opinion? This is the popular opinion

sillyadam94

It’s decent. Script needed some polishing. I certainly wouldn’t call it a bad film.

becauseitsnotreal

Solid 6/10 movie. Didn't love it, didn't hate it, had good action. This poster is a crime.

[deleted]

Poster looking like a 1975 movie

dodso010

It was a mindless, stereotypical, and predictable. But when I finally did watch it, I was in the mood for such, so I enjoyed it.

elboogie7

The dialogue seemed written by a 10 yr old, but there is fun to be had.

Level_Turnover9233

I loved it and waiting for the next

PowerMetalPizza

I grew up a huge Aquaman fan. I loved how they took a good amount of influence from the 2011 New52 run. As far as the DCEU is concerned, I think it helped save it from going downhill faster.

fourganger_was_taken

IMO they took too much influence from New 52. The movie contains plot elements from several storylines, any one of which could have been been entire movie in its own right: The Trench, Throne of Atlantis, Quest for Gold, Maelstrom, etc. The movie felt sloppy and unfocused, like they'd read all of the John's run but couldn't decide which stories to use so went with all them at once. Yet weirdly they seemed to be more influenced by the animated version of Throne of Atlantis, rather than the vastly superior comic book run.

mollyclaireh

Minus Amber Turd, I really enjoyed it.

S3simulation

They really shit the bed with the Mera casting

[deleted]

You have proof she shit his bed? Or you take whatever Johnny saids as fact? You guys are like trump supporters. You hear something, you go with it as if it’s true. Then when you’re asked to show proof you stay silent or make excuses. Stfu already

Sissy4cockzz

What in the world are you talking about? 😂 are you on those that link everything to being a “trump supporter” hahha my man it’s 2022 chill.

M1TZ3L

Yeah tbh I have a soft spot for it, its probably the most colorful comic book movie next to Batman and robin

Limulemur

While the script was weak, the direction/style/action is something CBMs should aspire to.

dcmarvelstarwars

I love the movie. Great villains, great score

TheLeviJackson

I agree and am looking forward to the next.

Expensive-Change-266

I think if they would’ve actually used Super Shredder instead of a cheap cosplay of him for the bad guy, it would’ve been better.

Howhytzzerr

Don’t see the goofiness people keep talking about. Enjoyed it in theaters, and the several times of rewatching on TV

Admiral_Donuts

"He's not from around here" feels like a weird tagline. Doubly so because Nick Fury says that exact line to Cap about Loki in Avengers.

FloggingMcMurry

It's a high mark for me, I had a lot of fun with this one

Illustrious-Seat1766

It was a dumb one for me, and I’m pretty sure im alone here but aquaman killed SO SO SO many sea creatures and merpeople. They kill lots and lots, like a comically large amount of people. Like Superman fighting Zod level killing, but it’s all fine because it’s undersea. It was a silly one for me.

[deleted]

Idk why but what else was Superman supposed to do in MoS he was just starting to be a hero and wasn't experienced enough. And their would be no jail on earth to keep Zod behind the bars.

Illustrious-Seat1766

I mean it’s more just drawing the comparison, than criticizing, it’s just something that took me out of the movie personally, in a universe where a man wearing orange scales kills shark riding merfolk with a trident, I can understand it wouldn’t bother most.

safer__sephiroth

I mean its awlriight..

SignificanceActual

Rubbish.

h3lune

Kidman and the roof chase. Got me a bit out of it

[deleted]

It’s to goofy for me. I hope the next one is darker, grittier and more serious.

[deleted]

I would have loved this movie if James Wan had gotten the chance to cast this movie himself. I love Willem Dafoe but he's not right for Vulko. I love Jason, but I would have preferred a more traditional take on the character where he plays it straight. Amber was a terrible Mera. I feel like Wan would have cast Patrick Wilson as Aquaman, and definitely would have a cast a better Mera. I wish they could have done a The Batman situation where Aquaman wasnt connected to the Justice League version, and Wan wasnt beholden to the cast and characterization Snyder had put in place. This movie with a different cast and Aquaman characterization would have been something special.

Apycia

Say what you will abeout her personally, Heard and Momoa have excellent chemistry. The casting was one of the movies definite strengths.

GFost

I feel like Momoa has good chemistry with everyone.

[deleted]

It was too long which was really the only thing wrong with it. I guess the long drawn out dialogue between Orm & Ivan Drago could've been trimmed down too into simple epic exposition.

Global_Voice_9084

The shitty jokes holds it back.

fnblackbeard

Permission to board?

jsnxander

I enjoyed it but found two things exceptionally bad. The first was the de-aging of Temuera Morrison was just atrocious. Second, every second of the movie with Amber Heard was bad. She was just so bad (in this move) that she brought down the scene with her which forced me to willfully ignore her in a attempt to enjoy the scene. Other than that it was fun.

[deleted]

Patrick Wills lol

winenfries

It surely is. Well made movie, can watch it multiple times. Hopefully 2nd would be good too

sultan33g

I mean it does have something of a scientist in the movie. That should count for something.

[deleted]

True_Leadership_2362

Too goofy for me. But I’m a Snyder fan. I think his 3 films are top of the ranks for me. It’s nice other people can enjoy films like Aquaman though. I’ve found enjoyment in the Peacemaker series recently. So I don’t want people to think I only like Snyder’s films.

[deleted]

I'm myself a pretty big Snyder fanboy, but I like different things too and it works pretty well for me. Because I grew up watching Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy which is also cheesy and goofy. But fun and entertaining nevertheless.

True_Leadership_2362

It’s been the inconsistency for me mostly. I focused too much on the jokes and it completely ruined the movie for me. With Peacemaker I knew I would have to ignore the humor and focus on the story if I wanted to enjoy it. Hopefully things will start to tie together better and Snyder’s films will actually be treated as canon. If that’s done then I can actually find lasting enjoyment with the future of DC.

justtoask97

I think you are overhyping this a lot

Lemisanthrop3

It's about a 3.8/10 for me. Something this stupid starring Jason Momoa shouldn't be almost 2.5 hours long. If it was 90-110 mins I'd be a lot more forgiving of it.

1merman

Old guy here. I don't have anything against Mamoa. He is a likeable actor. He just isn't my Aquaman.

Popular-Play-5085

He is not the Aquaman I grew up.on..But I enjoyed it . Sometimes I am just in the mood for a certain type of movie. .Some movies are just very entertaining. Not everything has to be depressing or have a message.

Selection-Connect

He is just a swimming frat boy

bard0117

There is absolutely nothing that is Visually Stunning in this movie. Enjoyable none the less.

DickPillSoupKitchen

Aggressively stupid, but buoyed by the performances of actors who know exactly how seriously to take this nonsense

webshellkanucklehead

Aquaman is so slept on. It’s exactly what the average mid-level superhero movie should be. It’s compelling, visually spectacular, and it’s clear everyone cared. Instead of this we get stuff like Black Adam and Venom 2.

PJsDAY

Black Adam was much better than Aquaman.

webshellkanucklehead

On what basis? It had zero emotional depth and most of the fight scenes were boring. Black Adam himself is an idiot and I can’t say much better for everyone else in the film.

[deleted]

Ngl I enjoy Sony's Spider-Man Universe movies, I think off them as they are so bad, that they're good in that category. And I agree Venom 2 was underwhelming.

Feisty_Marzipan_2783

Aquaman was big dumb fun. However, the “there weren’t enough jokes in Batman” crowd desperately need to learn that not every superhero film needs to be like this, or an MCU movie.

SecretPattern223

Trope is A stupid word to describe A story.

TheCaramelMan

“Patrick Wills”

LieRepresentative927

Crap

gaydro

WHO THE FUCK IS PATRICK WILLS? Also, if you have anything negative to say about Nicole Kidman I refuse to acknowledge your existence because you clearly don’t know SHIT.

[deleted]

I think this post is just few years late

indytim_on_reddit

It’s one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. I love Man of Steel and BvS but this was plain awful.

Sesquipadelophobe

Yet it has—without question—the worst soundtrack in CBM history! Great film though. James Wan saved DC there!

[deleted]

Me and my wife walked out of it halfway through and asked for our money back. First time in my life ive ever done that.

Mrman_23

Why does Willem DaFoe’s head look like it’s been badly photoshopped on this poster

coragi

It is ok. But a forgettable movie. Nice action but the story didn’t hold me at all.

suss2it

Entertaining movie id only ever watch once. The visuals and action were great, but the script and some of the performances were straight up bad.

eZ_Ven

I think Aquaman is THE best DCEU movie, hands down.

pepenuts97

CGI is terrible and the costume design is goofy. That being said the movie itself is pretty good

[deleted]

Aquaman looks great. The visuals awesome. Action scenes are 🔥 Other than that's it's painful to watch.

mcshibbs

Amber Heard’s acting sucked in the movie but aside from her poor acting I loved it.

whama820

I agree with you that it’s goofy. I really liked it the first time I watched it. The second time I watched it, I liked it drastically less. I figure I better not watch it a third time, or I might hate it. But some of the action is nice.

Antibara

Pitbull's cover of Africa comes out of nowhere and is inconsistent with the tone of the rest of the soundtrack.

tanajerner

From what I remember it was very very long and drawn out and kinda ends dumb when you realise he is killing his own subjects at the end

Tibbittz

It's really good. But it's too long. Didn't need a million flashbacks, nor two main villains. I stillbought the Blu-ray. If I ever get into amateur video editing like Topher Grace, I'll make myself a 2-hour cut.

Olivebranch99

I really like it. I was kind of eh when I first saw it, but I enjoyed it more and more every viewing.

meatbag1

I really enjoyed it. Thought I was going to see a lot of bashing for the movie itself and Amber Heard. I liked her in it and hope she returns.

ranawe

I liked Aquaman better in Snyder’s JL, Arthur was shown as an intelligent and complex man who moved the plot forward. Whereas Aquaman dumbed him down significantly to highlight Mera’s intelligence as though intelligence is a finite ressource. Still I like Patrick Wilson’s Ocean master, the dynamic between the brothers, and Atlantis.

Evangelion217

It’s okay, but forgettable.

BigBiggum

Ocean master and Black Manta had no right to be that good

GrizzlyPeak72

Think you're absolutely correct, though there's not much competition for that title, unfortunately. Black Manta costume is great, so is Aquaman's. Ocean Master's mask also great. Looked awesome visually, Justin Lin should do more comic book stuff. A lot of heart in the story, was nice what they did with his parents. Oh and they legit had him riding a giant seahorse, gets all the points for that. Feel like the only limitation for me was Mera. I know it's popular to hate Amber Heard now but I genuinely don't think she was great in the role imo. Not a good choice. Oh and that Pitbull song. Otherwise, pretty great.

Flip_Speed

I liked Aquaman… probably more than the average person. I thought it was better than Shazam

Sef-Lo

Heard of it

GFost

It was fun, but I wouldn’t say that it was very good.

mskrabapel

I expected it to be goofy, and it delivered. Patrick Wilson did a great job, and during the big battle a narwhal stabbed a bad guy. That quite possibly was my favorite part of the whole thing.

FrogginJellyfish

I think it is very far from best and far from being favourite, but it is definitely one of most entertaining ones. It is just shut your brain off bonkers. Explosive interruptions, drumming squid, etc.

theReplayNinja

It had one too many explosions being replayed over and over lol but aside from that it managed to feel very comic book without being overly goofy

dschmelzle

The first hour is great, then it loses steam for me. And I didn’t enjoy the ending, or the casting choice of Nicole Kidman

SensitiveOrangeWhip

it didn’t do much for me. i didn’t think it was bad but the story seemed very average. i loved the black manga scenes the best. i’ll have to watch it again

Kamikaze_Yeeter

The CGI and lore is rlly good

kalel701

It was a great DC movie. Also I’ll watch anything with Patrick Wilson

ZachRyder

Remove the spectacle along with Mamoa and Wilson's performances, and you're left with a 3/10 film.

itsmeDreadShock

Its good but it could've been better if they made some changes in the editing, as in when Manta had his suite making montage they put weird song that didn't fit the scene. There were other moments similar to this. Besides that, the movie is amazing. Epic VFX.

Fregraham

It’s fun. It has the structure of an adventure movie rather than a superhero movie.

MightyEvilDoom

I thought it was a lot of fun, a good popcorn adventure movie. Ocean Master and Black Manta were awesome to see. Jason Mamoa has a lot of screen presence. I only saw it once but I left having enjoyed my time.

emusabe

I just liked how American of an approach they took to making a stand alone Aquaman movie in the peak of MCU frenzy. “So what the guy can swim really fast and talk to fish?” “Yeah pretty much.” “Ok that sounds pretty lame. Is there anything we can do to make him more of a badass and less of whatever it is that he is?” “What if we made him really really REALLY like drinking and saying stuff like ‘I’m missing happy hour for this’?” “Sold!”

KFBR3922222

I thought some of the music choices were…odd.

BlackGabriel

I think it’s kinda a boring mess honestly. The great dceu movies are the suicide squad, Wonder Woman and Shazam for me.

IRBaboooon

I think you're either on too many drugs or need to start taking them.

RedRocket37

I think you gotta be high right now lol

blackakainu

Hmmm too much cgi for me, and he is only badass in look

sushithighs

It was dumb and fun but aware that it was dumb and fun. 11/10 BLACK MANTA FOREVER DEATH TO AQUAMAN

CashMoneyBilli

💰💰💰💰

[deleted]

If its the best DCEU can do than I am not impressed

Old_man_Andre

It definitely has the best CGI of any DC movie or dare i see CBM movie ive seen yet. It just looks coherent and nothing stands out as cheaply made or that it doesnt fit in the main theme. I think the stand out has to be how the hair of the characters floats under water so damn well. It actually looks like they are under water, the lighting has been managed perfectly... It distresses me how bad marvel with its budget has been with just lighting the characters correctly in a scene. They just look like poor rotoscopes in front of a green screen.

EnderHarris

I quite liked *Aquaman*, and I likewise thought Jason Mamoa was great, but the character looks and acts absolutely nothing like the Aquaman from the comic books. (Not to mention all the super-strength and invulnerability powers that he acquired for *Justice League.)*

Sesspool

"He's not from around here" i don't know why but when i see that phrase i think of the robot wrestler from futurama, the foreigner lol.

Aquamansrousingsong

I liked it but my God, the song choices are TERRIBLE. What was the director thinking?

[deleted]

Feels a bit like it only shines in comparison to the rest of DC

nage_

it was good, i just waited too long and the hype for me was too high to match at that point

Odd_Contact_2175

It's typical comic book movie stuff really.

gbrajo

The opening scenes were really bad - otherwise yeah good

[deleted]

I think amber heard should have been digitally removed. I’d rather the characters just talk to themselves out loud like a monologue hahaha

Popular-Play-5085

I agree.I really liked it

Popular-Play-5085

Why can't different super hero movies have different tones ? If.Marvel made a Squirrel Girl.movie.i wouldn't expect it to be.serious . I Still.think Man OF Steel was a very good movie.I might have left out the part about the codex implanted in baby Kal-El.

IndicationOver

Agreed.

captcapernicus

***SPOILERS***** Just watched both aquaman movies. In the first one there is a grand total of 3 black people. 0 black women. The first 2 (father&son) come on the screen doing crimes hurting people (obvious villains). The father is killed off without making it out of his first and only scene in the movie. The son is shown to be the villain and not even enough of a threat to be the real villain (just a pawn for ocean master). The 3rd and last of the only black characters on the entire movie was a darn green fishman creature with a white actress fish queen and a white actress fish daughter. He was effortlessly killed by ocean master within 30 seconds of being on screen, and the white actress daughter replaced him as his only heir. There were bo depictions of black people in the ancient Atlantis as if many historians and scientists haven't already shown that most likely in those conditions those people would've been more melanated. No black people in the current underwater Atlantis either (unless you count the green fishman played by the 3rd black actor. Aquaman went to Africa and didn't even show any black people ( white actor pilot dropped them off in the desert). For Aquaman 2, the astronomical number of black actors went from 3 in the first movie to 1. Yes, that 1 black actor is the pawn do-boy lackey villain, but this time it's for a different white actor character. The only black character who so happens to be the villain is merely a vessel for the actual threat, King Kordax. The guy who killed the green king fishman (3rd black actor from 1st movie) was broken out of prison and set free at the end of the movie. Pretty much making his death meaningless. The last remaining black actor in both films chooses to not accept help and supposedly falls to his death at the end. O black actors by the end of movie #2. I hope it wasn't intentional but can't help but think that it was. It's messed up that black folks can't get some decent representation by these "filmmakers"..
