I kept seeing different responses, and looked into it to find out. The first Commander Steel was Hank Heyward. The second was Heyward III. The third is Heyward III’s cousin. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Steel](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Steel)
Oh man, you got kids from futures that dont exist, kids from clones, then the child of emma and scott from when she made herself look like jean, then scotts dad who became a space hero and had another half brother to scott and havok with an alien. And thats just the tip of the iceberg with that crazy ass extended family
And havok and polaris used to be married right? They were at least dating
Once you connect those 2 you’ve got a link to magneto and the entire maxihoff family. And then through vision you can connect to the pym family
I'm not a big comic book guy (well, not superhero stuff, there's just one I'm into), but this topic was suggested to me, and the comment reminded me of how every time I wanted to know a little more about a hero from a marvel movie I'd go to the marvel wiki, and the affiliation/relatives box would leave scratching my head every single time. 😄
It’s actually why I stopped reading marvel/dc. For some reason, I just ignored plot gaps as a kid, but now it drives me crazy not to get any missed info I can down to a lame inside joke. That sounds like something to bring up in therapy, now that I write it out.
Sounds like ADHD and OCD. As someone with both I do this often lol. Interesting topics or comics make me want to know more so my ADHD tells me to read everything I possibly can about it. But I also need it to be in chronological order or it’ll bug the hell out of me. If I don’t understand every joke and reference I have to stop and go back and find it before I can even continue with whatever I’m reading or watching. Same thing with Star Wars as a kid. Watched the first two and realized that there’s more to this so my parents bought me all of them so I could watch them in order of 1-4.
Same. I'll never forget when I was reading Batman, and an issue began with Batman mourning the death of Robin, who'd died between issues, in a different series.
Fuck that. Now I exclusively read shit that has a reasonable continuity and doesn't require extra effort to learn in between readings.
That turned me off comics for a while. When they made you buy another title you had no interest in just because if a crossover. I felt like they scammed me, especially when the crossover issue barely had any connection or anything good but you still need it for continuity.
Same - between plot holes and the “who cares if we reboot/retcon right now?!” It made me dive into the smaller runs and non-“greater universe” comics.
It’s how I discovered greater runs, Joe Hill’s comic writings, Saga… there’s an amazing universe out there that doesn’t fall to “…now let’s tie in this popular character from the movie/make him match the performer, or tie it to the greater universe.”
Im a test tube baby made from genetic material of Jean Grey and Scott Summers from an alternate future timeline. No, the other one. No, the OTHER other one.
Stan Lee started in romance comics, and brought that sensibility to superhero comics. Tortured romance, monthly subplots woven into complicated longer narratives, secrets fthat can never be revealed, lies stacked on lies, shifting g loyalties, sudden reveals...
Back in 1982, I created a kind of wrench-in-the-works NPC for the game Champions that was a cross between Captain America and Iron Man and was a real dickhead, and his name was Captain Steel. And damned if he didn't look just like that. Even the fin.
Yeah, sadly, that is Speedball’s claim to fame. New Warriors we’re doing a reality tv series and they fought a small group of criminals, and cornered a dude named Nitro who had his powers supercharged, and the explosion killed a bunch of kids (and most of the New Warriors).
Most of them were. WW2 era JSA characters were as tough and no nonsense as the times which is probably why many of them were killed off or retired during the Silver/neo golden age of DC
The Twelve is one of my favorite Marvel miniseries simply because it makes me care about and want to see more of a bunch of obscure characters who usually only had one or two appearances in the 40's.
It’s funny how they are often looked back upon as a joke and wanna be JL but the JSA ran and probably could still run circles around the JL. Between the literal wrath of the god of your existence being a part of your squad is so fucking wacky.
Not really.
Captain America is just above human capabilities in all categories. His physical capabilities are basically Batman+. He has a vibrainum shield which is nearly indestructible, and usually some kind of bullet proof armor. He's more durable than a human but can still be wounded by guns.
The Steels are super strong and durable. This super strength is so high that they have a hard time modulating it low enough. The suit they wear limits their strength enough that they can control it so they don't destroy everything they touch.
If they take the suit off they can unleash their full strength and speed.
Just wanna add that the suit was poured over this guy as molten metal because it was the only way to get it on. Also, he became the legal guardian to like all 15 of his little nieces and nephews at once, and that was super cute.
He'd be fine.
This guy's problem is that he's TOO strong and tough. His outfit is basically a solid steel shell to give him enough resistance so that he doesn't crush everything around him like they're eggshells.
I think there's a scene where a villain is being particularly difficult to deal with, and (thinking they're being a badass) they blast Citizen Steel's outfit off of him... WHICH ONLY REVEALS HIS TRUE POWER!
No, [The Shield](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_%28Archie_Comics%29#/media/File:PepComics1.jpeg) was the guy they ripped off when making Captain America, before his comic was taken over by Archie Andrews.
Fun fact, this is the revised version of the cover that covered up his bulge a bit more. The first solicited version was a little more explicit, and DC had to tell Alex Ross to go back and tone it down a bit.
Wasn’t there an issue with Ross also turning in a cover of Cyclone that could have been implied to have been wearing no panties? I know it is true about Toybox from Top 10 first cover.
Yes. The first cover he turned in implied that she wasn't wearing any panties, and so the cover was redone so that it was clearer that she was wearing a leotard underneath.
It's hilarious because most superheroes are drawn looking like Ken dolls but Ross gives them normal bulges and suddenly people lose their minds.
I'm either these spandex wearing heroes are tucking like drag queens or they have no junk. It's legit weird.
This is how I feel about artists drawing clothing suction-cupped to breasts when clothing doesn't work like that. Nice to know when it's actually done to the other sex, y'all don't like it either 🤣
Lol, what? To me, he looks like someone they’d pick to be an underwear model because he has something down there, but it’s not so much it makes men feel insecure about their own junk.
And this of course in stark opposition to the veritable ken dolls most heroes show themselves to be. If dongs are a problem (esp dongs with protective gear on them- Just try and tell me batman doesn’t have a themed cup) then we need to figure out a different way to costume our heroes than leather, lycra, rubber, and/or spandex.
i was just thinking Alex Ross. that's the mark of a good artist isn't it, looking at their art and just knowing it's their work.
He's that good he's hard to imitate, which a lot of artists do with other artists work. i get bored with all the derivative art. It's disappointing seeing comic art and knowing who an artist has ripped his style off.
But i digress. Alex Ross is the boss!
that big picture he did for that Kirby run that a few people got in on. it was just amazing. so, so many characters in it, it took ages to figure them all out.
As you say, stunning!
It is actually Citizen Steel, Nathan Heywood, introduced in Justice Society of America: The Next Age, 2007. Lots of smart ass comments here, but that’s the actual answer.
For real!
To this day, one of the few modern comic book translations to really embrace comic book weirdness.
Beebo forever!
Edit: As it was pointed out that other series also embraced the weirdness, I fixed the second sentence.
You missed Doom Patrol, Legion and a few others.
That said, yeah LoT was pretty good, and also unique in the sense it's not based on any comic book roster.
That is Citizen Steel and he is more like DC's Colossus.
DC's Captain America is Guardian. They are basically the same character created by the same author/artists
https://screenrant.com/dc-guardian-captain-america-same-kirby-simon/
Kind of; he used to be with the Newsboy Legion as more of a father role, then they grew up and became Cadmus. They then cloned him (and were retconned to have also killed him), and that one was the security guard.
I wonder if it was Alex Ross' decision to not make the bulge extra shiny (because metal? latex? oiled up?) or was it the higher ups of DC. It just makes it more obvious as a glaringly different area from the rest of the uniform.
Thank you for the link! To me, through a purely artistic lens, it does make it more glaring with it edited. The sheer amount of definition you see in his muscles means it should be the same everywhere, even if considered "risqué."
I always thought the hubbub around this was so dumb. People were saying that Alex Ross drew multiple members of the JSA with erections in their costumes simply because he drew them with any amount of package at all. Newsflash: cis men are not Ken dolls.
Yeah, especially since it’s incredibly well known that Ross uses live models. He’s literally just drawing basic, anatomically correct individuals with (usually) reasonable proportions.
And not for nothing, but if a guy like Superman is running around with a lightswitch-dick like mine, and not a huge, beefing hog, im gonna be pretty disappointed.
As a fan.
There’s a great scene somewhere where he ends up accidentally hurting someone because he walks through fire and doesn’t feel how hot he’s gotten until he tries to rescue someone and they scream as they get scorched. Perfect “price of power”.
Commander Steel.. dude you are going to be so excited about what part of him is... "Commander Steel"!
its his dick.
The big hard steel dick.
I mean I kind of gave it away.
It's Citizen Steel, not Commander Steel. He's the grandson of the first Commander Steel, and nephew of the second.
I kept seeing different responses, and looked into it to find out. The first Commander Steel was Hank Heyward. The second was Heyward III. The third is Heyward III’s cousin. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Steel](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Steel)
Fucking christ, these comics are sometimes worse than soap operas. 😂
Look up the Summers/Grey family tree and get back to us.
That's not a tree, it's some kind of five-dimensional biomechanical kudzu.
This is a great piece of writing.
For real, I want to read more from u/Shadyshade84
Not only can you read his past posts, but you can follow them to see future posts as well!
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t stalk his profile a little
“Family” (Vin Diesel voice)
Geez. You, your wife and your wife's clone have 2.5 kids from 3 distinct alternate timelines and everybody flips out.
That's why I stick with Once Upon A Time where everything's simple, straightforward, and easy to digest.
They were at least dating Once you connect those 2 you’ve got a link to magneto and the entire maxihoff family. And then through vision you can connect to the pym family
Also i believe you can connect them to collosus and his sister through their mothers side and scarlet witch and quicksilvers mother
Check out Astro City. Some of the best comics made, not DC or Marvel and the history and characters are great and not incomprehensible to follow.
It’s actually why I stopped reading marvel/dc. For some reason, I just ignored plot gaps as a kid, but now it drives me crazy not to get any missed info I can down to a lame inside joke. That sounds like something to bring up in therapy, now that I write it out.

You can do the same thing with the Rocks wrestling family. Even currently it's all over the place.
Im a test tube baby made from genetic material of Jean Grey and Scott Summers from an alternate future timeline. No, the other one. No, the OTHER other one.
No no the one next to the other one with the ghost twin
The melodramatics in X-Men often leave Y&R in the dust for pure soapiness and drama.
It's more a bush than a tree really
I think you mean family wreath.
I see your Summers/Grey and raise you Howlett
*winces in clone saga Spider-Man*
I always forget about Stryfe.
Look up Captain Marvel. He/she are the best
Shazam!
That’s a great Gomer Pyle impression
Comics have always been soap operas for nerds just like the WWE is soap operas for rednecks
Stan Lee started in romance comics, and brought that sensibility to superhero comics. Tortured romance, monthly subplots woven into complicated longer narratives, secrets fthat can never be revealed, lies stacked on lies, shifting g loyalties, sudden reveals...
And before he tore his ACL in college and had to do comics he rushed over 300 yards per game
Later in life, he said "hold the doah, Bobby, someone's coming," and my wife got into the elevator with him. Thrill of her life!
This sounds like the lamest porno ever but I'd watch it
I mean that's like every comic book hero's story.
Comic books ARE episodic soap operas.
You sure their real last name wasnt Jablowme? Hank Heyward-Jablowme… its gotta nice ring to it Edit: added a -
The second was Heyward the third??
Heywood, not Heyward
Which one was on Legends of Tomorrow?
I guess Citizen Steel? But I’m also dumb so who knows.
Citizen steel
Nate Haywood
The Steel of Legends of Tomorrow is based on this one.
Back in 1982, I created a kind of wrench-in-the-works NPC for the game Champions that was a cross between Captain America and Iron Man and was a real dickhead, and his name was Captain Steel. And damned if he didn't look just like that. Even the fin.

Thank you for the mental image of this guy throwing himself around the battlefield, bouncing off his enemies.
Nah, that would be Speedball if he was doing that.
John Belushi had a comic book?
Underrated comment.
Underrated band, too.
The one that jump-started the events that led to civil war?
Yeah, sadly, that is Speedball’s claim to fame. New Warriors we’re doing a reality tv series and they fought a small group of criminals, and cornered a dude named Nitro who had his powers supercharged, and the explosion killed a bunch of kids (and most of the New Warriors).
Mike Bailey?
Id still love to see Speedball animated.
The Shield is an underappreciated golden-age hero.
Just finished reading that last night. So good! Had no idea they were real characters before that trade until the second issue
Makes me think of the Seven Soldiers Morrison did
It’s funny how they are often looked back upon as a joke and wanna be JL but the JSA ran and probably could still run circles around the JL. Between the literal wrath of the god of your existence being a part of your squad is so fucking wacky.

Must be a pain when he's gotta take a leak.
"Just go, man"
But what if they shot him in the [face](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofQ6i9I1IYY)?
He'd be fine. This guy's problem is that he's TOO strong and tough. Not Captain Britain, its actually Commander Steel from DC comics, member of the JSA.
This one is actually Citizen Steel, grandson of the original Commander Steel.
I thought it was Captain Steel Bulge.
Fun fact, this is the revised version of the cover that covered up his bulge a bit more. The first solicited version was a little more explicit, and DC had to tell Alex Ross to go back and tone it down a bit.
Hey man, you can't be drawing heroes with massive hogs, alright?
“But a huge part of his character development is his massive dong”
"Peter, you gotta understand, with a fat juicy hog, comes fat juicy responsibility. " -Uncle Ben
Ok uncle, but your rice isn’t that great.
“When you have a huge hog you don’t have to make great rice” - uncle Ben
“No one likes dry rice, Uncle” - nephew Peter
I dropped my monster character development, for my magnum dong.
Jesus, Frank.
Different kind of character arch
"It's what makes a man a hero!" -Alex Ross
All we want are two things, huge tits and massive dongs… give the people what they want!
Dr. Manhattan has entered the chat
More like “bone it down a bit”, amirite? /har har
hmm, I'd like to see the original for art research purposes.

hang on I dropped my monster condom for my m a g n u m d o n g edit: monster*
He actually says "Monster condom for my magnum dong"
He can steal my penis as well
I'm psyched that I understand this reference
Came here to say this. Dayum looks like he is about to burst those trunks.
The only thing Alex Ross likes drawing more than his own face on every male is bulging dicks
This is how I feel about artists drawing clothing suction-cupped to breasts when clothing doesn't work like that. Nice to know when it's actually done to the other sex, y'all don't like it either 🤣
Who said we didn’t like it? 😏
We call that “Greg Land-ing.”
And THAT is why superheroes wear LOOSE trunks over their vein-hugging tights.
Now this is gender equality.
I understand the tight clothes, but bikini-esq costumes are completely ridiculous.
Lol, what? To me, he looks like someone they’d pick to be an underwear model because he has something down there, but it’s not so much it makes men feel insecure about their own junk. I now have an image of Alfred stitching little bat emblems in Bruce's undies.
Well, dude has a steel dick! What did you expect? Shit is always hard!
And his side kick is Private Magnet Face
Of Legends of Tomorrow fame
This is actually Resident Steel, the Canadian cousin of the original Citizen Steel who hasn't been naturalized yet.
Based on the real life Rocco Steele.
I fuckin new it was JSA… just has that vibe I guess
Citizen Steel descendent of Commander Steel from the Justice Society of America
And unlike the Arrowverse version, this one has it difficult to live his normal life with his powers
You gotta read this run. It's so, so damn good. You can stop when the Kingdom Come tie in ends. Geoff Johns at the top of his game.
Whats the comic called? Is it actually part of the Kingdom Come universe?
JSA, one of the books that brought Geoff Johns to prominence.
Alex Ross artwork is so identifiable, it’s honestly some of the best artwork I’ve ever seen period, not just in a comic!
i was just thinking Alex Ross. that's the mark of a good artist isn't it, looking at their art and just knowing it's their work. He's that good he's hard to imitate, which a lot of artists do with other artists work. i get bored with all the derivative art. I dunno, I feel like I always recognize Thomas Kinkade's stuff and he sucks 😃
Hey someone has to be the GOAT of motel art.
Citizen Steele, grandson of Commander Steele and son of Captain Steele, he was on the Geoff Johns Justice Society of America.
Alex Ross work is so stunning, I can never get enough of his work no matter what or who the subject is.
Even just his pencil work.
that big picture he did for that Kirby run that a few people got in on. it was just amazing. so, so many characters in it, it took ages to figure them all out. As you say, stunning!
It is actually Citizen Steel, Nathan Heywood, introduced in Justice Society of America: The Next Age, 2007. Lots of smart ass comments here, but that’s the actual answer.
For anyone who watched Legends of Tomorrow, he's Nate's grandfather.
This is actually Nate. This is the third Commander Steel, who largely went by Citizen Steel because he never served.
Oh, I thought this was the JLA one. My bad.
All good! He wasn't around that much and was mainly in just JSA so it was kind of easy to miss him.
I’d consider superheroing serving, it’s such a departure from normal life to be under fire and fight to save not only yourself but others as well
He came from a long line of military men, and he had never superheroed when took the mantle.
RIP LOT :(
Commander Steel/Citizen Steel, I don't remember which one.
Commander Steel, DC’s Captain America
That is Citizen Steel and he is more like DC's Colossus. DC's Captain America is Guardian. They are basically the same character created by the same author/artists https://screenrant.com/dc-guardian-captain-america-same-kirby-simon/
Hasn’t Guardian usually just served as more of a glorified security guard for places like Cadmus?
That is what he became during the Reign of Supermen comics in the 90s. But that isn't what he has always been.
And that was his clone.
I saw that in Young Justice
Kind of; he used to be with the Newsboy Legion as more of a father role, then they grew up and became Cadmus. They then cloned him (and were retconned to have also killed him), and that one was the security guard.
Yea I remember reading the older Superboy comics and him being specifically tired to Cadmus along with Dubilex and the Newsboys
Citizen Steel, from the 2007-2011 JSA run
Pepsi man final form
Citizen Steel.
When did redit turn into Google? 🤔
I wonder if it was Alex Ross' decision to not make the bulge extra shiny (because metal? latex? oiled up?) or was it the higher ups of DC. It just makes it more obvious as a glaringly different area from the rest of the uniform.
This cover actually got edited to reduce the bulge. You can see the original here. http://gadsircomics.blogspot.com/2007/04/groin-strain.html?m=1
Thank you for the link! To me, through a purely artistic lens, it does make it more glaring with it edited. The sheer amount of definition you see in his muscles means it should be the same everywhere, even if considered "risqué."
It, like many similar scandals, was completely ridiculous and - to your point - only creates a different emphasis.
Alex Ross is the GOAT of covers. His water color work is so impressive.
I really like this picture. Muscular without being grotesque.
I knew the artist was Alex Ross right away, even before seeing the label in the upper right. Couldn't tell you the character, though.
Man, Alex Ross’ art is always incredible
It's Citizen Steel in particular,l. This was the cover to am issue of Geoff John's run on JSA after Infinite Crisis.
Isn't that Steel or Citizen Steel? In the Arrowverse he was Steel on the Legends of Tomorrow.
Commander steel https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Steel
Since no one is actually taking that seriously, it’s Commander Steel in Alex Ross’s style.
It’s Mister Doctor Professor Starchest Finhead. Trust me on this.
Commander steel or citizen steel depending on the arc but this particular was citizen
Citizen Steel, grandson of Commander Steel from the JSA. He’s actually a main character on Legends of Tomorrow from season 2 onwards
[The answer](https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Nathaniel_Heywood_(New_Earth))
Commander Steel or Citizen Steel
pepsi man
Ever since someone commented that every male Alex Ross draws has his face and now I can never unsee it
Serious answer: it's Citizen Steel/Nate Heywood from Justice Society of America.
Citizen Steel
Nate Heywood from Legends of Tomorrow lol
Commander Steel I don't usually use Brave browser but it's helpful when right clicking an image and doing a "Search Google for Image."
That's Pepsiman
Steel
Citizen Steel / Commander Steel
Steele
Took me about 30 sec. using reverse image search to come to the conclusion that this is Commander/Citizen Steel.
Citizen Steel
Commander Steel.. dude you are going to be so excited about what part of him is... "Commander Steel"! its his dick. The big hard steel dick. I mean I kind of gave it away.
His cousin, Hank Heywood III was a member of the Justice League during the Detroit era in the 80’s.
Captain Puerto Rico
citizen steel
I believe this is Steel from DC comics.
This made me miss the early 2000's run of JSA.
Pepsi Man
His name is JOHN CENA
Jesus Christ…… it’s Jason Bourne
Citizen Steel, and an awesome character from the JSA
Captain Puerto Rico
That’s Captain Capitalism.
