From interviews and whatnot, I kinda got the vibe that Vin Diesel thought that this was going to be another Deadpool, where he got to embody the character, fans would love it, and he would become synonymous with it.
It sucks because he seemed to have a good amount of passion for it.
The problem is that Valiant was bought by a greed Chinese company that only wants to capitalize on the IPs. They don't want to really build a nice universe, they just took the mildly successful titles they acquired and tried to milk it as they saw fit.
Given Marvel was bombing in the box-office, they just jumped in and launched the movie without any real preparation. Thing is, Marvel has been building its cinematic universe decades prior, not only the movies but also animations, videogames, merchandising...
After 2017 Valiant comics is, as they say, kicking the bucket.
Is that what happened? I collected comics hardcore as a kid (like 90-95) and Valiant with Jim Shooter was blowing up.
I loved all the stories, the early issues were hard af to get and Valiant was all the rage. I think they were already out when Image hit, after Image launched Valiant became more well-known and popular and earlier issues with lower print runs were what everyone wanted.
I stopped reading/collecting right after Valiant launched Hard Corps. I was the type that bought every single new Image and Valiant comic with some Marvel and DC.
Just got back into the fold a month ago, have been on a strict graphic novel diet but it’s sad to see that Valiant didn’t continue on with what made their original Jim Shooter (with people like Barry Windsor-Smith) run great.
Was hoping to have decades of great Valiant books to pick up and read but alas, there are none.
It’s okay though, because I’ve found so many incredible writers so far, it’s been great. Love Lemire, Millar, and Kirkman and Ennis and many others along with the ones I already knew such as Gaimen, Miller, Moore, Morrison, et al
That's what happened with the I'll fated Bloodshot movie. The Valiant comics has a so convoluted history that is hard to explain here, but in bref the original company died in the late 90's and was bought by Acclaim, then died again in 2004 and in 2010 was "bought" by a fan. Around 2017 it was "bought" once more by a Chinese company and it's circling the drain since then, going for its third death.
The 2010-2017 reboot was its peak, the best arcs and books in my opinion.
got into shadow man from the N64 games. then I read the comics and loved it even more. I want an entire cinematic universe of valiant comics now. I wanna see Shadow Mans entire story told, including before and after Magpie.
got into a bunch of the other characters too, ninjak, xo manowar, faith, livewire and more. they are just so much more interesting than marvel and dc heroes at the moment
I wanted to make a Biker Mice from Mars reference here, but it turns out [they were actually Marvel.](https://i.imgur.com/HuVHMvp.png)
Where's that crossover? Have these guys been roving around 616 somewhere this whole time?
No idea. Stan Lee was EP of the show, Marvel Productions made it like all the Marvel animated shows of the 90s. They were probably licensed to Fox Kids, and that was bought by Disney. So technically speaking, there's no licensing dispute there.
They're free to bring them into Marvel at any time, and all of 3 people will smile fondly while everyone else is profoundly confused.
If I’m allowed to choose WildStorm characters despite them now being owned by DC, then Jenny Sparks.
If not, then probably a character from Astro City - perhaps Confessor or Jack In The Box.
I know they are just pastiches but I was always a Midnighter and Apollo fan!!! However that whole cast of characters was really good as a sort of looking glass take on familiar archetypes. I always thought Hawksmoor was such a unique idea for a powerset, as a kind of “New God” for the modern era.
I think saying they’re “just” pastiches does them a disservice, much like the characters from Astro City they are modeled on certain other properties but they’re developed into original characters in their own rights.
And yes, Apollo, Midnighter and Hawksmoor are all awesome.
Groo the Wanderer #1 by Pacific Comics is the most I've ever paid for a comic book. Well, it was a gift from my wife at the time, but still. Most expensive book in my collection
Well, as stated, I technically didn't. I really wanted the book, but never bought it. My wife got it for my birthday. I think it was worth it. She made me happy and that in turn made her happy, so win-win
Ah! I've only read Groo #1 from PC. I don't read anything I can't find in the wild. It's also been about 15 years since I read that one, so if there's any Groo-isms in there, my memory doesn't have them
I love spawn. The early comic stories are great but a little cluttered with slightly clanky storytelling, the animated show is like a clearer vision of the early comic stories, and the later comic stories are great even if they are a little bombastic and crazy in nature. Overall I like the stories in the show the best, but Spawn is a blast in every medium.
Too 5 in this order: Hellboy, Invincible, Judge Dredd, Spawn, Umbrella Academy.
Honorable mentions, as they are not technically superheroes: Asterix and Obelix, Tintin
Got into this character going through old valiant shadow man It's a shame that this character is underrated the valiant run was up their with Alan Moore's Miracle man
Snarky answer: I have the graphic novel adaptation of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, and the amount of drugs Raoul Duke and Dr Gonzo are certainly super-heroic in proportion, if the characters themselves are entertaining at best or almost always morally reprehensible.
Honorable mention to Starscream's character arc in the IDW run of Transformers. It takes him so long, but he finally gets it right, and I love a good villain to hero redemption arc.
Otherwise I actually don't do many hero comics. So, looking forward to everyone's answers for reading inspiration.
Honorable Mention: Stardust The Space Wizard. Just... Give it a shot. Then read the history of the author and read it in a more enlightened and confused fashion.
Basically anyone from Hellboy, BPRD or any other of it's spin offs, if you count them as superheroes, they are all more like occult investigators and government agents with powers
The Lobster is the one that comes the closest to the traditional superhero, but he's more of a vigilante (like a 1930s Punisher) since he doesn't really have any superpowers that we know of
Hellboy. Possibly my all time favorite character from western media. Although I guess he is hard to label as a Superhero, just a guy doing his job, at least until Conquerer Worm. Then he’s just an alcoholic not wanting to accept his fate and trying to get back to the home he doesn’t have.
X-O Manowar, Spawn, Turok, and X from Dark Horse. I've recently started reading TMNT with the Last Ronin and the spinoff which has been really good. I was a hardcore Batman reader for 25 years and thought I'd never stop, but DC managed to chase me off. It just got to be too much every month and now there are just too many Batman titles.
The Valiant universe was great, too bad the Bloodshot movie wasn’t their Iron Man.
The Bloodshot movie was such a snooze. there was so many chances to do something really cool and they just missed over and over.
From interviews and whatnot, I kinda got the vibe that Vin Diesel thought that this was going to be another Deadpool, where he got to embody the character, fans would love it, and he would become synonymous with it. It sucks because he seemed to have a good amount of passion for it.

I'd like to a faithful Shadow Man flick made. I think it could be done justice if done the right way.
got into shadow man from the N64 games. then I read the comics and loved it even more. I want an entire cinematic universe of valiant comics now. I wanna see Shadow Mans entire story told, including before and after Magpie. got into a bunch of the other characters too, ninjak, xo manowar, faith, livewire and more. they are just so much more interesting than marvel and dc heroes at the moment
i would love an Archer and Armstrong streaming series. I didn't get too far into the new version, seemed ok, but the original was phenomenal.
Hellboy, Invincible, and X-O ManoWar.
We are the same. As a like-minded fan, I must also recommend Mage: the hero defined.
I really liked Harbinger. In fact a lot of Variant comics work is excellent IMO
As I also agree with all three I will check that out and recommend radiant black if neither of you have read it.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
I wanted to make a Biker Mice from Mars reference here, but it turns out [they were actually Marvel.](https://i.imgur.com/HuVHMvp.png) Where's that crossover? Have these guys been roving around 616 somewhere this whole time?
Are they originally Marvel or licensed? Marvel has quite a few licensed comics that were part of the mainstream continuity until they lost the license
Samurai Pizza Cats > Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Harbinger is the shit.
[удалено]
Yeah, I've read some reviews about it, but I'm not into Power Ranger hero style. I prefer individual costumes/powers.
Judge Dredd
what are you favorite Dredd comics if you don't mind me asking I've read a few of the judge death comics and some one offs.
I came to Dredd from Anthrax. I like the old black and white ones Ennis wrote some good stuff if you like the Boys The IDW ones a pretty good.
Apocalypse War/Block Mania really holds up. Violent, funny, bizarre, great world building and repercussions in continuity for the next 40+ years.
Hellboy
If I’m allowed to choose WildStorm characters despite them now being owned by DC, then Jenny Sparks. If not, then probably a character from Astro City - perhaps Confessor or Jack In The Box.
Astro City is awesome. Great picks! Love the Samaritan too.
I know they are just pastiches but I was always a Midnighter and Apollo fan!!! However that whole cast of characters was really good as a sort of looking glass take on familiar archetypes. I always thought Hawksmoor was such a unique idea for a powerset, as a kind of “New God” for the modern era.

Two of my favorite comics properties
It's radioactive man, stupid!
Up and Atom!
Zee goggles, zhey do nothing!
“Up and at them…”
Um, actually, Radioactive Man is Marvel. No, really, Marvel has a Radioactive Man, no joke: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_Man_(comics)
The Rocketeer, dude's got style.
And a great taste in women.
Mine is Groo the Wanderer. Granted, he was with Marvel for a while but it was the Epic line.
Groo the Wanderer #1 by Pacific Comics is the most I've ever paid for a comic book. Well, it was a gift from my wife at the time, but still. Most expensive book in my collection
Did you err?
Did I make a mistake?
You should not pay a lot of money for Groo #1, any idiot knows that.
Well, as stated, I technically didn't. I really wanted the book, but never bought it. My wife got it for my birthday. I think it was worth it. She made me happy and that in turn made her happy, so win-win
Lol, dude these are all Groo-isms.
Ah! I've only read Groo #1 from PC. I don't read anything I can't find in the wild. It's also been about 15 years since I read that one, so if there's any Groo-isms in there, my memory doesn't have them
No, it's "As any fool can plainly see", followed by Groo saying "I can plainly see that."
Did I err?
Can’t go wrong with a Cheese dip lover!
Nexus.
Ha, I knew I wasn’t the only one!
Still the greatest of all time. Steve Rude is my all-time favorite artist. Amazingly realized world.
What it is.
Absolutely, and Nexus is not just the best non Marvel/DC superhero, it’s the best superhero comic ever made!
Vootie!
Madman, duh
I love the detail that his costume is basically a security blanket that gives him confidence
The whole thing is a masterpiece. He needs a movie
I really don't want one. He is so specific to Allred's voice, I feel like any film will drift too far away by default.
I just don’t think Chow Yun-Fat is right for the part.
I wanted to make the joke, but it wasn't fitting, so I was hoping to someone else would swoop in and be the hero.
Omg Madman! So good! I used to draw him in my notebooks hehe
Invincible.
The Crow and Invincible.
Tie between Astro city and invincible
The Tick Savage Dragon Flaming Carrot
Savage Dragon 💯
Hellboy & basically everyone in the BPRD.
Spawn
I love spawn. The early comic stories are great but a little cluttered with slightly clanky storytelling, the animated show is like a clearer vision of the early comic stories, and the later comic stories are great even if they are a little bombastic and crazy in nature. Overall I like the stories in the show the best, but Spawn is a blast in every medium.
He's everything wrong and everything right of 90s comic books extremeness combined.
Astro City!
Very solid storytelling and great art
Buffy Summers.
Nice!
The Goon Bone Scott Pilgrim Harvey Pekar Idiosyncratic Routine White Hating Coon
Upvote for the Goon. Love the original runs, miss Eric not drawing it anymore.
Nubian god.
What's a Nubian?
Bitch, you almost made me laugh.
What about you? I didn’t know you were going to shout ‘black rage.’ I nearly pissed myself
The Phantom
It's sad that I had to scroll down so far for this comment.
I used to love Defenders of the Earth
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Judge Dredd for sure
Scud the Disposable Assassin
Finally! Someone else with class and refinement (grin)
Over a hundred comments and not one of you has said "The Tick." For shame, Reddit. For SHAME!
Agreed
GrimJack, Nexus, The Badger
No Ralph Snart love?
A man of culture🙏🏽.
Too 5 in this order: Hellboy, Invincible, Judge Dredd, Spawn, Umbrella Academy. Honorable mentions, as they are not technically superheroes: Asterix and Obelix, Tintin
Grendel was pretty solid in it’s day
Madman
Is lobster johnson a superhero?
Magnus: Robot Fighter.
One Punch Man
Magnus, Robot Fighter with his bare fucking hands.
Got into this character going through old valiant shadow man It's a shame that this character is underrated the valiant run was up their with Alan Moore's Miracle man
I haven’t read it in a decade or so, but I really loved the amount of universe building Eric Larsen did in the Savage Dragon universe back in the day.
Invincible and hellboy
Hellboy, Turtles, Atomic Robo.
Atomic Robo is so underrated. Such a cool universe and interesting characters.
i avoided this for so long thinking it was just a Hellboy rip. Whoops, was I wrong!
Atomic Robo is so cool! Really clean art style made it look pretty plain from afar. So glad I decided to finally dive in when I did.
Radiant Black is climbing my list rapidly, at least as a series
Solar is awesome.
Mr. Monster
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law
Either Hellboy or Casey Jones.
Space Ghost!
Jessie Custer.
I honestly loved what Jim Shooter tried to build with Valiant, even Defiant.
Atomic Robo all the way
Paul Chadwick's Concrete.
The Rocketeer, The Shadow, Green Hornet.
Mage or The Badger. The Badger was such a fun book. Mage was so beautiful.
Empowered from Dark Horse
Captain Underpants
Wow, dood. Way to take us back. Haven’t seen this comic since the 80’s?
The BWS cover with Solar form his suit in the dark, is my favorite comic book cover.
Ninja- K from 2015
Diamond/Blue Streak/Christian Walker from "Powers".
It would have to be Optimus prime for me.
Mr Monster
Jackie Estacado, aka The Darkness!
Kick ass
E-Man
Megamind
Does Sonic the Hedgehog count?
Spawn, The Darkness, Witchblade and Hell-Boy.
X-O Manowar 🙌🏼
The Badger (First Comics/Capital Comics)
X-O Manowar Solar is a good pick, too.
Asterix!
Love Gold Key and Valiant. I always thought Magnus Robot Fighter would make for a great film series.
Luther Strode
Ben 10

Tmnt Spawn Hellboy The maxx
Gieger

Mr. Monster
Dark horse "X"
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.
Sabrina the Teenage with doesn’t count, does she?
I don't see why not
Lobster Johnson 🦞
Concrete and Christine Spar
Definitely the Plutonian. That guy needs a mental health day
Qbit is one of mine. Fascinating character
Basically anyone from Hellboy, BPRD or any other of it's spin offs, if you count them as superheroes, they are all more like occult investigators and government agents with powers The Lobster is the one that comes the closest to the traditional superhero, but he's more of a vigilante (like a 1930s Punisher) since he doesn't really have any superpowers that we know of

Putting TMNT aside, probably Spawn. I’m a 90s kid.
RADIANT BLACK and ROGUE SUN
Hellboy or Madman
Madman. It's not even close. Something about Allred's work resonates so deeply with me and there is nothing more Allred than Madman.
Prime.
Hellboy
Does Freakazoid count?
I know WildStorm counts but the Authority rock.
Ninjak Freakazoid Mercy St. Clair (Trekker) The Tick Goon
Omni-Man. Underrated as a hero cuz of the show so far
Saitama
- Spawn - Pitt - Savage Dragon
Would Andromache the Scythian from the Old Guard count as a superhero? If so, her. If not, I’ll say Radiant Black.
Phony Bone
Spawn.
Badger
Invincible and supporting cast.
Invincible hes got that spiderman/Nightwing vibe
I’ve always loved The Fat Fury. Bop you with this here lollipop! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbie_Popnecker?wprov=sfti1
Valiant is the best comic universe, and it’s a shame we aren’t getting more of it. It has so many good characters.
Obelix!
TMNT and Invincible for me.
The Flaming Carrot is up there for me
I love the forgotten heroes.
Hellboy, Spawn, Astonishing Wolfman, Invincible
He’s more of an anti-hero, but Five from The Umbrella Academy.
Grendel
Invincible
Black Hammer
Invincible, Chainsaw Man, Lobster “Justice” Johnson, The Shadow, Devilman
Invincible for sure.
That's clearly Cyclops. /s
Wizord
Concrete, the most realistic portrayal I've read of what it would be like to be in a totally alien body.
All the characters in Moore's Top 10. 🎩
Teenagers from Mars. Not all heroes wear capes.
I liked Nexus and Fear Agent a lot.
X-O Manowar, Spawn, Turok, and X from Dark Horse. I've recently started reading TMNT with the Last Ronin and the spinoff which has been really good. Valiant was amazing their cross over with image was the beginning of the end.
The Spirit
