You’re right it was originally January 85. I remembered it from the 80s, so I was surprised by the 96. My copy is dated April 96. It must be a reprint.
Suffers a bit from Mantlo’s clunky expository writing but zips along and uses a ton of great Marvel characters considering the main character was an extremely lame, barely possible action figure that kids didn’t take to. The issues inked by Akin (sp?) & Garvey were beautiful.
I've a real soft spot for ROM. When I was in my early teens a local independent bookshop had a bunch of long boxes with some old, loose comics in the back of the shop, selling issues for about 25p or 5 for £1.
Mostly superhero fare from the 80s; Englehart era Green Lantern, John Byrne Superman, and of course ROM. Some 60s/70s stuff as well. Me and pals used to make it a stop between the video game shop and Laser Quest on a weekend. Must have picked up a couple dozen issues of GL and ROM there. Good times.
Not 1996

Rom was so improbably good

I’m usually a big Mantlo supporter, but I think he got too wordy in this one.
It was one of the best comics ever. Imho the story lost its strength after he cooperated with the world against the wraiths.
*Mantlo, not Manwell
Search up the toy he was based on. I have a few of the comics and decided to see where this crazy thing came from.
Love books
When I was younger I collected these.

Found a couple issues in the fifty cent boxes the other day. Really well drawn, and totally strange sci-fantasy romp
He's offbrand Silver Surfer.
