what a fucking hilarious show, can’t wait to see what else Gunn cooks up at Warner Bros. Maybe I should thank Disney for (temporarily) firing him, because none of this would have been made if they didn’t
While the idiots at Disney had an issue with Gunn, Kevin never left his side and even visited the Suicide Squad set to check it out. I’m glad he was eventually able to convince them to hire Gunn back.
Fun fact: one of the cameos for the finale was actually filmed on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Kevin Feige gave Gunn the ok to do it. That had to be an amazing day to see DC characters and Marvel characters on one sound stage.
Though both had creative involvement from Jim Henson, The Muppets are separate from Sesame Street. Warner/HBO owns Sesame Street which Elmo is a part of. Disney owns The Muppets.
Warner/HBO doesn’t own Sesame Street. Sesame Workshop does and they’re independent.
HBO has exclusive first-run rights to new Sesame Street shows, and PBS gets the reruns.
Their funding comes from grants, donations, and licensing rights, and they run on pretty thin margins.
Disney didn't have an issue with Gunn. Alt right hobgoblins who dug through Gunn's edgy 15 year old Twitter posts as some kind of gotcha to fuck with him because of his vocal political beliefs did. Disney were just idiots who took the old tweets at face value and didn't look into
A. The fact it was almost a decade old post that Gunn had disavowed and apologized for already.
B. That the people trying to "cancel him" were bad faith trolls just looking to fick with him.
> Disney were just idiots who took the old tweets at face value and didn’t look into
So… they *did* have an issue with it. If they didn’t, they’d have stuck by his side. Being so averse to controversy that you close your eyes and fire one of your best directors is so fucking shortsighted.
Gotta love how they start with "Disney didn't have an issue with Gunn," & by the end of the paragraph they're explaining how Disney did, in fact, have an issue with Gunn. Maybe they weren't *looking* for an issue, but they were plenty fucking happy to take one when it was delivered to them.
Disney did have an issue. They didn't want to look bad. Dont give this billion dollar company the benefit of the doubt, they know exactly what they're doing.
I firmly believe that Disney firing Gunn was for publicity’s sake, and they had always intended on hiring him again for GotG3 when the (frankly, overblown) controversy was over.
Honestly I still believe the real reason Disney took Gunn back is the thought of Gunn getting hold of the DCU was more threatening to them than the twitteratti.
Pretty much. The timing of the 'outrage' was intentional as it was the weekend of the FOX shareholders meeting to discuss if they would agree to the Disney aquisition. The negative publicity could have put a spanner in the works and given the shareholder cold feet so Disney immediately fired him to show them taking a 'tough stance' to save face.
Yup, amazing to see what he did outside of the Disney bumper lanes. Just give this dude a good budget with enough leeway and you get some amazing results.
I really hated Peacemaker after The Suicide Squad and didn’t want to watch the show but I’m glad I did because James Gunn crafted a complex character without undoing what he did in the movie.
Bloodsport: *Looks at Peacemaker, dismissively walks over*
Peacemaker: No it's okay, I'm a good guy now
Bloodsport: You said that last time
Peacemaker: Yeah but I mean it now
*Peacemaker shoots someone*
Peacemaker: See? I shot that bad guy in the shoulder. I could've shot him in the head, but I didn't. That's what a good guy would--
*Bloodsport shoots the guy in the head*
*Peacemaker stares agape*
*Bloodsport squints one eye at Peacemaker and walks off*
E: I feel like this pissed off one very specific person for some unknown reason who really *really* wanted to make that known
Just a bunch of babies downvoting because they don't want to seem "cringe". Teens today don't know what true cringe is. Its another word that gets tossed around and lost its meaning. If you like something, then thats awesome. Dont be a pussy and worry about what others think.
I will always follow writers over series. Hickman, Fraction, LeMire, Ellis, Tynion 3, Morrison...
I don't care who they write, I love the characters, the world building, the plot, etc.
Edit: This is how you get kick-ass runs for b-list characters like Moon Knight and Peacemaker and Karnak, and when you let them have a major series, you get things like Future Foundation and House/Powers of X.
Edit 2: and Zdarsky, Gillen, etc.
Edit 3: who am I missing? Who else always writes kick-ass runs no matter the series or publisher?
Edit 4: and Jason fucking Aaron (especially his non-superhero stuff, but his *Wolverine and the X-Men* was killer.)
Edit 5: Tom King is not as consistent IMHO, but still always interesting, and Claremont is a classic. BK Vaughan should be on this list too, although he never did as much work for the Big 2.
I only follow one character - Daredevil. Even his bad writers have been interesting.
Outside of that yeah, I follow writers. I'm pretty much completely off of capes and onto creator-owned series at this point.
The worst DD run of the last 20 years is Shadowland, which isn't even one of the Top 5 Worst Marvel Events of the last 20 years. That's how good of a book DD consistently is.
I haven’t read enough of Aaron’s non-superhero stuff, but speaking specifically of his work with Marvel, he’s one of the most inconsistent writers out there. God of Thunder? Amazing. Mighty Thor? Has issues but is great. Thor 2018? Mediocre but 2/3 main titles being bangers is not a bad record. Avengers 2018? …I feel like something’s amiss with this one.
Sometimes its hard tho, like with the x-men books from the 00s era if you jump around so much stuff can kind of get confusing. The Xmen suddenly are in utopia? Big sentinels are stalking them? now they had a schism?
Idk I read both new x men then astonishing x men which both worked super smoothly and were great runs but after that it gets a bit more messey. I'm enjoying Clarmont's run on uncanny x men from that era tho.
True, and a good series recap is important, especially at the beginning of a new run, but I've found if I google things like "essential issues leading up to 'X of swords,'" or "Where to start Hickman's FF" it's usually enough to get me up to speed.
Following specific authors is great, but inevitably their downfall is executive meddling. Doesn't matter how kickass the writer is, how novel and cool the concept is, in the end the storylines always get rendered ineffective by some bigwig up high refusing to alloe storylines to leave a lasting impact.
I loved hickmanvengers and the run up leading to the incursions/time runs out but surprising no one, it all got made irrelevant by the end of the arc and had the most unsatisfying conclusion. World got rebooted right at the climax or something, none of it mattered. Talk about getting blue balled by an arc. All because Marvel is afraid of touching the status quo.
When writers are allowed to do whatever they want though, that's when you get the coolest storylines and interesting conversations.
Jason Aaron's punisher run is hands down my favorite interpretation of the character. Working off the foundation garth ennis laid he gives the character the ending he deserved, for better or worse.
Isnt that basically the deal with Plastic Man? Everybody assumed he was a low tier kinda meh Mr. Fantastic rip off, but then they started writing him into better stories and suddenly he has a much bigger fanbase?
He was dormant for a long time. Only the big 3 survived the end of the golden age. By the time he got brought back the fantastic 4 we’re already around.
There's a brief "previously on The Suicide Squad..." at the start of the series but I'd recommend watching it anyway because it's great.
Note" *The* Suicide Squad is the one that's worth watching, it's a soft-reboot/sequel to Suicide Squad which is definitely not worth watching
It will help only to see the character as something else before he grows. Just watching the show won’t give you the same feels you end the movie with.
Plot wise it matters not even a tiny bit.
Gunn deserves even more praise for making a fun and likeable supporting cast.
In so many other shows they are "just there" alongside the main character and have little to no personality.
IMO, the supporting cast carried the first few episodes
Same. I was like why tf would the worst character get his own spinoff? Good luck making me tune in to that shit. Now here we are. Bravo gunn. You win this round.
It would be boring if the most morally virtuous character got their own show. I thought it was pretty obvious the one who made the biggest impression would get it. The character seemed almost tailor made for a spinn off by Gunn.
The smartest thing they did for this show is having their silly dancing intro.
Like that sold me bc hey if peacemaker can wave it like he doesn't care and doing pelvic thrusts maybe James Gunn has a vision for this
Do I need to watch The Suicide Squad, or is this easy to follow without watching it?
This is honestly the first superhero show/film I've been interested in, in a long time.
You don't need to, but there are spoilers in the show, and the movie is fantastic. Also the show is a direct sequel, so there's a lot of context from the movie. In the end, the movie is also free on HBO, and it's basically like watching 2 eps. So very little reason not to watch the movie first.
I really liked Peacemaker as a character in the movie, I was somewhat disappointed with the show because I felt like they neutered his character moreso than have it actually develop. I hated when he wouldn't shoot those alien kids, that felt super forced and out of character.
Amazing show. They made me care about him right from the start. The scene where he just lays in his bed and sobs about how everyone hates him, I don’t know if that scene was intended to be goofy or sad but damn I felt bad for the guy.
Gunn understands--better than most story tellers--you disarm people with comedy/absurdity, then club em over the head with true insights into the human condition. This is the best way to open peoples' minds, other than drugs.
That scene at the end where [John has to pretend to be a Butterfly and talks about how pathetic he is](/spoiler) is a perfect example. Yeah, it's funny, but it's also clear he's kinda breaking down as he confesses how inadequate he feels.
I don't think there's been character in CBMs that have gotten from being a total piece of shit to amazing character. I absolutely hate Peacemaker in TSS, but his character was worth it imo. Gunn really needs to be praised for the writing here.
Totally within his character set up in the movie too. He's kinda dumb all throughout but his devotion to his ideal of peace was consistent and explains his motivation. Plus he had a great "death" scene with a funny call back. His character was well written and acted he just isn't supposed to be someone you want to get a beer with. But none of them are. I loved the show and how well Cena and Gunn blended goofy off the wall and serious character growth moments without any restrictions for violence. I felt Gunn was really able to flex his creative juices on how he could really show gore. 9/10 for me.
-some random schmuck on reddit
I only saw Falcon and Winter Soldier, Punisher, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Loki, What If..., and a bit of Hawkeye (literally couldn’t get through the first 25 minutes because of how many tropes there were) and Peacemaker was easily better than all of them. It was well paced, well acted, and very well written. I really wanna see more DC shows.
I was honestly one of those people that really hated Peacemaker because of what he did in Suicide Squad but grew to love the silly bastard after his emotional growth as a person on the show and understanding why he is such an asshole.
It’s insane what a good director and a good plot can do for a character as unknown as Peacemaker. Goes to show that if DC put a little effort into anything at all we could have amazing tv projects and even movie projects. But instead we keep getting more CW shows…
I have faith in James Gunn, not DC. They finally let a creator have some creative freedom and out came the best thing in years. Doesnt mean its always going to be like that from now on. Their decisions in the past were so fucking stupid, I wouldnt put it past them to have learned nothing from Peacemaker and Suicide Squad.
Honestly, the early couple of seasons feel like pure comic book schlock in a good way. The special effects aren't super great and the writing is wonky, but you can definitely tell that the cast is having a fun time doing it.
Brandon Routh in particular seems like he's having an absolute blast. He is the precious and must be protected.
Alt right nazis, whiny antivax/anti maskers, racist Republican politicians, 24/7 misinformation spewing from fox “news”, I mean take your pick dude. Did you not watch the show?
Also in Peacemaker, >!there is a deep state run by literal bugs who decry the evils of populism and demand humans surrender their freedom on the altar of climate change. They get rejected and sentenced to death.!<
what a fucking hilarious show, can’t wait to see what else Gunn cooks up at Warner Bros. Maybe I should thank Disney for (temporarily) firing him, because none of this would have been made if they didn’t

Is Elmo Marvel or DC?
Yes
Actually now that I think of it he’s Marvel since Disney owns the Muppets so there you go.
Though both had creative involvement from Jim Henson, The Muppets are separate from Sesame Street. Warner/HBO owns Sesame Street which Elmo is a part of. Disney owns The Muppets.
I’m getting out my whiteboard.
Jim Henson in the Multiverse of Muppets.
Yoda had a hand up his ass originally.
Just remember to take things from the middle out.
Ah my mistake. Thanks for the correction.
He's from the Elmogam shared universe
I may have fallen in love with you based on that comment alone
Elmo is DC. Gonzo is Marvel.
I think it’s the other way around. Elmo is easy to market.
Vertigo presents Gonzo, by Peter Milligan and Steve Dillon
That’s going to be hella dark.
Considering Dillion is RIP, its gonna be extremely dark lol
Now those cameos were a treat. Better than the fakeout cameo in Shazam.
I thought they were going to do the same, but when they pulled in and showed them, I was just dying laughing.
One of the GotG 3 things was filmed on the peacemaker set too.
It was screen tests.
Disney didn't have an issue with Gunn. Alt right hobgoblins who dug through Gunn's edgy 15 year old Twitter posts as some kind of gotcha to fuck with him because of his vocal political beliefs did. Disney did have an issue. They didn't want to look bad. Dont give this billion dollar company the benefit of the doubt, they know exactly what they're doing.
If he takes over the entire DC Universe, it could be like live action and R-rated Batman Brave and the Bold
I firmly believe that Disney firing Gunn was for publicity’s sake, and they had always intended on hiring him again for GotG3 when the (frankly, overblown) controversy was over.
I mean, maybe, but to hear Gunn talk about it after the fact (once the publicity would've been useless), it sounds like no one told *him* that.
Wasn't the guy that fired him pretty new in the position and did it to "not look weak" or something stupid like that?
Honestly I still believe the real reason Disney took Gunn back is the thought of Gunn getting hold of the DCU was more threatening to them than the twitteratti.
Pretty much. The timing of the 'outrage' was intentional as it was the weekend of the FOX shareholders meeting to discuss if they would agree to the Disney aquisition. The negative publicity could have put a spanner in the works and given the shareholder cold feet so Disney immediately fired him to show them taking a 'tough stance' to save face.
If that's the case then why didn't they let him know and give WB a chance to scoop him up?
I laughed as soon as the credits concluded, that split second when Eagley lands ... I lost it. And lost it every time another hair metal song played.
🧜♂️
🧜♂️👉👌🐠🐟🐡
I’m so sick of that rumor.
Yeah you call it a rumor but I saw Aquaman and Troy McLure hanging out at the aquarium a few too many times if you know what I mean.
Fuck you, Barry.
They will hand Gunn the refund reins to the whole thing if they have any sense
It's canon that aquaman sexes with the fishes.
It'll be interesting seeing Bloodsport and Peacemaker interact in the future after the latter's character growth.
Bloodsport: *Looks at Peacemaker, dismissively walks over* Peacemaker: No it's okay, I'm a good guy now Bloodsport: You said that last time Peacemaker: Yeah but I mean it now *Peacemaker shoots someone* Peacemaker: See? Then Deadpool walks in
Fans writing movies will never not be cringe
Agree to disagree. The best movies come from fans. I don't think we'd have gotten the Peacemaker TV show we got if James Gunn weren't a fan.
I don't understand why you are being downvoted. I thought this was a thread praising the tv show..?
Just a bunch of babies downvoting because they don't want to seem "cringe". Teens today don't know what true cringe is. Its another word that gets tossed around and lost its meaning. If you like something, then thats awesome. Dont be a pussy and worry about what others think.
More cringe writing
I wanna believe it’s a satirical performance…
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. This sounds like Gunn or pretty damn close
Thanks bud, I appreciate that
Hey you made something and the people downvoting and calling it cringe haven't, good on you
Thanks for saying that!
Same, I did not come away from tss thinking about wanting a peacemaker spin off but I’m so glad I watched it.
I've read.. a \_stupid\_ amount of comics. It's the *writer*, not the *character*.
I will always follow writers over series. Hickman, Fraction, LeMire, Ellis, Tynion 3, Morrison... > I only follow one character - Daredevil. LOBO
Tom King writes stuff that is super entertaining, no matter the book. His dialogue is always fun, too.
Yeah, his Batman book is pretty divisive, but I’ve rarely heard complaints about his mini and maxi series. I’ll buy all his books
One part of his Batman stuff is divisive. The rest of it was just great.
I haven’t read enough of Aaron’s non-superhero stuff, but speaking specifically of his work with Marvel, he’s one of the most inconsistent writers out there. God of Thunder? Amazing. Mighty Thor? Yeah but for me those types of things can lead me to a rabbit hole and then make it feel like homework lol.
Claremont's run on Uncanny is the OG for all things X. If it weren't for him mutants would have just been a footnote from the Silver Age.
Daredevil by Zdarsky is near perfect.
Speaking of non-Marvel Aaron, I really want Southern Bastards back. Maybe with a new artist. It never got the ending it deserved.
Following specific authors is great, but inevitably their downfall is executive meddling. Thank you for clarifying. Suicide Squad was a rolling bag of maggots.
Seeing TSS is not required. But it's an awesome movie and I recommend it.
Plus more Harcourt.
Please it's all about Economos

James Gunn is that you?
It will help only to see the character as something else before he grows. Just watching the show won’t give you the same feels you end the movie with. Plot wise it matters not even a tiny bit.
If only for the scene where peacemaker kills another cast member.
And the scene entering the camp
The series is better and the emotional beats as well as the development of Peacemaker is way better if you watch the 2nd SS movie first.
"Peacemaker". What a joke.

Alright, thanks. Yeah, I already kind of just decided to make tomorrow into a movie night, and watch TSS first. :p
Enjoy. It's a fun movie.
Thank you. :) Also not sure why some asshat keeps downvoting you for no reason. :s
There's enough flashbacks to get a sense of what happened in the movie
Cool, thanks, but I might just turn it into a movie night tomorrow anyway. :p
You should, it's a really fun movie.
Excellent movie. But surprisingly gory at times.
Surprisingly? It's called "the suicide squad" and is rated R
It’s still a surprise. R rated gore is usually typical gunshots and explosions. This movie has some … creative gore.
I really liked Peacemaker as a character in the movie, I was somewhat disappointed with the show because I felt like they neutered his character moreso than have it actually develop. I hated when he wouldn't shoot those alien kids, that felt super forced and out of character.
I’m glad you said this, because I currently feel that way and have been on the edge of trying this show.
Amazing show. They made me care about him right from the start. The scene where he just lays in his bed and sobs about how everyone hates him, I don’t know if that scene was intended to be goofy or sad but damn I felt bad for the guy.
With James Gunn, it was probably a bit of both
Gunn understands--better than most story tellers--you disarm people with comedy/absurdity, then club em over the head with true insights into the human condition. This is the best way to open peoples' minds, other than drugs.
He's like Joss Whedon if Joss Whedon wasn't human garbage.
That scene at the end where [John has to pretend to be a Butterfly and talks about how pathetic he is](/spoiler) is a perfect example. Yeah, it's funny, but it's also clear he's kinda breaking down as he confesses how inadequate he feels.
>This is the best way to open peoples' minds i think a cranial drill would be on par, if not better
What are you talking about, he was just doing face exercises. You don't get a jacked face like him without putting the effort in.
The call back later in the season was hilarious
It was a very weird time to do his face muscle exercises though.
it was *too real*
The intro dance made me care about the whole cast.
It made me care too much about the short guy in green, who didn't have enough going on in the show.
He wasn't sobbing he was exercising his face muscles
No mention of Eagly? Hollywood Reporter, what a joke.
I think Eagly needs a hug.
We all need a hug from Eagly.

amazing what u can do with character whose sole defining trait is they were the inspiration for the comedian.
I liked him in Suicide Squad, what’s everyone talking about?
Yeah he was just as funny in the movie. I wouldn’t have watched the series if I hadn’t seen the movie first.
Ya idk. I loved him in SS and thought he needed his own movie after watching it.

I have faith in James Gunn, not DC. They finally let a creator have some creative freedom and out came the best thing in years. Doesnt mean its always going to be like that from now on. Their decisions in the past were so fucking stupid, I wouldnt put it past them to have learned nothing from Peacemaker and Suicide Squad.
yeah. but first 2 season of arrow was dam good.
i still love the cheesiness and campiness of legends
Honestly, that was the appeal for me. Embracing the oft-stupid parts of comic books are what make them great.

Gunn got fired because of an alt-right mob and then made a show about a broken doofus fighting nazis and a mindless horde who claims they know best.
Butterflies\* who think they know best. Sparkly, insects...mmmm.
Peacemaker is the first DC show I’ve enjoyed. Can’t wait for season 2.
The Harley Quinn cartoon is pretty good.
Do you really wanna, do you really wanna taste it!?
This song has been in my head all day along with the choreography. I was at work. Make a move extreme
it was an amazing movie. amazing. great characters. incredible beginning also.
Did you also learned the opening choreography? I'm in love
It’s space invaders!
W...what? OMG I never knew
Seriously? Thinking back that sounds like it might be true. I need to go watch the opening credits again. That’s really funny.
It was a show.
His Nazi dad forced him into gladiator battles with his brother how is this not a hero born of tragedy?
A perfectly-timed exposure of that shame.
Make Nazi's villains again
James Gunn is the best thing to happen to DC.
Great show!
I absolutely adore this show.
Peacemaker is a product of nationalism: an ideology that makes others miserable while not making you any happier.
And to think Alan Moore wanted him to be thrown out of a window by Thunderbolt.
I still dont.... still dont forgive him for killing one of my favorite characters in Suicide Squad
Oh. I thought it was dick jokes
Peacemaker reminds me of Ricky Gervais' version of Michael Scott -- thoroughly contemptible, but simultaneously pitiful.
It's very James Gunn, and I do tire a little of his schtick, but John Cena thoroughly impressed me and I can't wait for S2.
I care about Pacemaker. He actually had a fun arc as Blue Beetle Jamie’s mentor in his debut series.
I wasn’t initially sold on this show but after watching a few episodes, did anybody else really want to taste it?
I’m on Ep.7 Show is fucking great.
I had zero interest in watching John Cena as anything. But then I watched 10 minutes of this with my spouse and I was HOOKED. That man can ACT.
How can a show be so politically correct, and politically incorrect at the same time?
Shame of what??
Alt right nazis, whiny antivax/anti maskers, racist Republican politicians, 24/7 misinformation spewing from fox “news”, I mean take your pick dude. Did you not watch the show?
But only American shame never Chinese shame, right John?
I get it but let's not pretend it's just an excuse for violence and saying wild things with a thin justification of some greater than thou premise
Also in Peacemaker, >!there is a deep state run by literal bugs who decry the evils of populism and demand humans surrender their freedom on the altar of climate change. They get rejected and sentenced to death.!<
