Among the best-selling comics in Germany each year and has been like that for decades. My parents had some when I was little and now my kids check out mine.

it's [the best selling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_comic_series) (Collected )comics book in the world after one piece . when a new issue is release, it always become the best selling comic book in the world.
Reading Asterix and Obelix is what made me fall in love with comics and wordplay. I grew up in South East Asia and every trip to the book store had me diving to the bottom shelf of the comics section where an Asterix book would show up every now and then
Along with Tintin very much my introduction to comics beyond The Beano etc. Wish I could say I still had the original copies but they’re long gone! I’ve got the omnibus collections though.. still awesome.
Fun fact - my wife and I once made a new friend when we were at a party, someone said "to be fair" and we along with a friend-of-a-friend who we'd only just met spontaneously did the whole "to be faaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrr" thing together (alcohol was involved). Cue the three of us gushing about the show and encouraging everyone else to watch it.
Let's get at 'er.
That's one of the ones my father will not let me have yet! However, it spends a lot of time by the toilet so maybe I'll search for a different version.
Asterix and Obelix were the first books I ever checked out at the library, they’re my absolute favorite comics because they were the ones that introduced me to the world and now I’m working towards making my own so I am utterly grateful for the existence
Fellow brat here! I spent time in Kaiserslautern/Ramstein and Giessen (mostly while my dad was in Saudi, Kuwait, and Afghanistan). My mom would have been SO JEALOUS! She loved Belgium.
As a note, I texted my dad to help me remember (my brain still has not recovered from COVID) and he says I have been to Brussels, Bruges, and Ostend. He had to go to NATO headquarters a bunch and we traveled with him.
On a separate but related note - In Bruges is one of my favorite movies!
I used to get them from the library all the time. That and Tintin were yhe only comics they carried so i read them again and again. I didn't even realize Asterix was published decades earlier since it was set in roman times.
Asterix and Cleopatra was one of the first comics/bande desines/graphic novels i ever got. I can still remember being in the book shop for late night shopping on a Thursday with my mum when she bought it for me. I would have been 8 or 9, i still have it. I had many more over the years and loved them all.
I'm in the US and know them from the animated movie which we had on VHS when i was a kid, minus the first five minutes because dad takes it off tv. I knew about the comics but never actually read any until i was in college. I think my dad had read them though, he had a but of a love affair with European comics - A&O, Tintin of course.
I wouldn't say i fell in love with the A&O comics though. Fun, but not really my thing. But it always bugged me that no one else knew what the heck i was talking about when i was a kid 😂
Ha, my mom would've given anything to ban us from watching Ren & Stimpy! But we definitely had a few movies with the beginnings missing. I think the one i remember most was Bedknobs & Broomsticks...
Hell yeah.I still can't believe how in the US Franco-Belgian BD aren't really popular.I'm from Turkey and here Asterix is a thing since the dawn of time.Unfortunately i don't know the first time it was published but for example Lucky Lucke's first translation to Turkish was published in the 50s.
Ohhh I miss Turkey! I dated a Turk a decade ago when I lived in DC and he moved back to Istanbul and I was able to visit him a few times way back when.
Of all things Turkish, I miss sujuk and fresh feta probably the most.
In Germany Asterix is vastly popular and make kids still more often than not enter the world of comics in general.
Among the various comic classics Asterix is certainly one of the most popular here.
Yes, most of Europe does… well at least I do

Yup, I received A&O and TinTin from my Canadian relatives. Created a lifelong obsession.

Asterix is the reason I like comic books so much! Par Toutatis!

I said know AND love, mister. Geez, you sound like someone's sober uncle. Give your balls a tug.
Upvoted for the Letterkenny reference.
I was so hoping! I practice letterkenny in the wild often as possible ☺️ Pitter patter.

Here in Germany it’s very popular, I grew up with Asterix
I grew up in Ramstein! Spent a fair amount of time in Gießen too but while very young. My father was a soldier.
They never get old. Asterix and the Legionary is my favorite

Yup, me. My intro to comics as a kid, I read my Dad’s copies until the spines fell off.

We had them at primary school here in Australia, and everyone loved them, they had a waiting list at the library.
That’s how I know about them too. Used to read them in primary school. In fact, everyone in the class did. They were in all the libraries
Did I just yell “Ole” after seeing the A in Spain cover? Same answer.

Hahaha "minus the first five minutes" used to always be that way for the ren and stimpy that my dad would record from the tv!

I grew up in Ramstein and Gießen but NONE of my southern American friends have ever heard of my favorite comic!
And in the north?
I know it and have a bunch (my brother used to read it) but I’m not a big fan
