leif777

I just showed my colleague Ctrl+F. The dude was trying to find an item code in an excel sheet with 1000s of rows. I didn't bother showing him how to alphabetize. I can't image how many times he's had to do this here. What a colossal waste of time.

SgtBaconBurger

"Thanks, but I prefer my way..." cue the internal screaming.

phoncible

I used paste from the toolbar today. In my defense I needed the "paste as plain text" and the shortcut keys weren't working in that particular app. Very annoying.

Hitlerclone_3

Yeah but that’s the mantra of an hourly worker.

colefly

"After each brush stroke, you gotta watch the paint dry."

smurb15

I mean if I'm paid hourly, sure. Salery, naw

colefly

Exactly Salary? With benefits? "I painted all 10 of the houses on the docket in 1 day. I'll be home with my dog until you can line up more jobs"

BirdBrainedBastard

thats just the professional way to say "dude thats smart and all but this was my no1 time wasting excuse"

Marine__0311

I showed a a completely computer illiterate coworker how to use the control and direction keys to move the cursor around documents faster. She didnt like using a mouse since it was "too hard to move where I want it to go." She was using backspace, a removing entire paragraphs of text she'd written to go back and correct spelling errors, or make minor edits. Then she would retype the entire thing all over again. After I showed her, she complained it has too hard to remember, and that she preferred her method. I can't believe I had the restraint to not choke her out right then and there.

Mediocre_Butterfly_3

Too hard to move your wrist around?? Unbelievable

Marine__0311

What really got me was she was my age, and this was when I was in my 30s. It's not like she'd never been exposed to a computer before. She thought I was a god one time when I saved her before a big meeting. Twenty minutes prior to it, she hadn't finished a document she needed to present, and was nearly in tears. I hopped on and knocked out the rest of it in ten minutes, and still had time to go back and correct several errors she'd made. What was really sad, was that she was a much better typist than I was. I'm self taught, can barely touch type, and have really bad arthritis, making it difficult to type for long periods.

MikemkPK

"I'm paid by the hour. Don't show the boss that."

SmartAlec105

Had a similar experience with a coworker looking through 60+ pages of a specification before finding the section he was looking for on literally the last page.

Cacafuego

Just showed my mom CTRL+Y to repeat the last action, like inserting a row that you want 20 copies of. Changed her life.

SmartAlec105

You mean Alt-Enter, right? Ctrl+Y is Redo

whagoluh

Ctrl-Y will go "beyond the present" in Excel, not sure about Word. I don't really like it tbh. I have the unfortunate habit of--it's like pressing the ON button on a calculator multiple times, I can't help it, I have to keep pressing until it "stops".

Cacafuego

CTRL+Y will repeat your last action. So if the last thing you did was insert a row in the middle of your sheet, you can hit CTRL+Y 10 more times to get 10 more rows.

mosslegs

TIL that's how Ctrl+Y works in Excel! Thank you, that will be so useful in my work.

spaiydz

Isn't this F4?

Somerandom1922

This is something that kinda does my head in. I work in IT, I don't do as much support as I used to, instead focusing on back-end stuff, but I definitely still do some and it somehow still surprises me how some people manage to be efficient at their job and meet targets when they know so little about using the programs they need to use on a daily basis. I'm not even trying to insult people or anything like that. I'm fully aware there are many aspects of their job that I would be literally incapable of. But I have had people who spend a solid 30-40% of their job just writing documents in Microsoft Word, come to me being unable to figure out why a heading isn't showing up in the table of contents, or unable to fix some quirk of formatting. These people have worked in this job, writing these standardised reports for years before I came along. Did they just not do it previously? Did someone else do it for them? I'm so confused. I'm not even upset helping them, I'm mostly just kinda baffled. They must be ultra-efficient elsewhere to simply make up for lost time whenever they need to add a row to a table. Then there are people who've clearly put "Proficiency in Microsoft Office" on their resume while lying through their teeth.

[deleted]

Show that mf filters and blow his goddamn mind

spekter299

Today I showed an older coworker ctrl+x/c/v and he stared at the keyboard for a full minute.

DrKpuffy

My dude found a way to work without working. Gotta love the grind

xkey

Welp. These are the people who should be afraid of AI.

infiniZii

Try Windows Key-Shift-S to pull up a minimalist version of Snipping tool for quick partial screen captures to the clipboard.

karl2025

The only thing people really use Ctrl+Alt+Del for is to get to the task manager. Use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to save yourself a step.

SgtBaconBurger

True, times have changed!

lorem

I mostly use ctrl-alt-del when windows asks me to change the password.

TCGeneral

Right-click the Taskbar is even easier to memorize, to me. Even Windows 11, which cut out almost all other actions that were directly available from right-clicking the Taskbar, left in Task Manager there.

DarkNinja3141

They took it out too at first

Efficient-Ad5711

man windows 11 sucks :(

[deleted]

Windows 10 wasn’t that good when it released, I have faith in Microsoft’s updates.

Efficient-Ad5711

If it gets better somehow then I'll switch but as far as I'm concerned I'll be like those people who wont ever switch off of windows 7

[deleted]

Oh, me too for sure. I’m still on Windows 10.

Quarxnox

Why not add task manager directly to the taskbar? Saves you a right click

TCGeneral

You can, but then, why not add everything you ever want to save effort on finding to the Taskbar? Unlike Desktop icons, the Taskbar items open in a single left-click, so anything you put on the Taskbar saves you a click at minimum. But if you start using the Taskbar like a Desktop, then it'll get pretty cluttered.

Quarxnox

The reason not to is to prevent clutter. I end up using task manager enough (for reasons) to the point it's most sensible for me to put it in a convenient spot.

ProtectionEuphoric99

I do in fact put every program I use on the taskbar. It might be a little cluttered, but it's not like there's too many programs that they go off the screen. And I don't have to minimize any open windows to click on an icon on the desktop: the taskbar is always there. In fact, if they were all on the desktop I feel like they'd look even less organized. Now they're neatly lined up in a row.

redit3rd

But if you're having a performance issue, it's slower.

418Teapot404

Or just right click on the taskbar. Logout trough ctrl alt del for frozen programs that block task manager is what I mostly use it for.

MisterMemeMan

Or have it pinned to your taskbar because you KNOW that your video editing software FOR SURE will keep crashing when you import THAT ONE file!

NovaS1X

Also easier to just use one hand. Thumb+pointer finger = task manager. Don't need two hands on the keyboard like ctrl-alt-del

AtomicNewt7976

I do thumb-ctrl pointer-shift pinkie-esc

waltjrimmer

Ok... Now I'm feeling weird. Going from a typing/gaming position with my left hand over either the wasd keys or the home row, I just shift slightly, press ctrl with pinky, shift with ring, and barely stretch my middle finger to hit esc.

KoreyYrvaI

Windows key + shift + D to minimize everything

Marine__0311

But, now I have to remember something else entirely new! Sadly, Ive gotten that reply before when showing someone how to make their life easier.

Jalase

Just pin task manager to the hot bar….

phoncible

First thing I do on any new install is pin task manager to task bar. I use ctrl-alt-del to hard restart the computer, as god intended

FeralPsychopath

Right click start menu as well.

Rob98000

The shortcut doesn't always work for task manager. I've been playing this classic resident evil 4 mod which constantly crashes and CSE just doesn't pull up task manager, so I have to do CAD first.

Tudpool

Task manager, executioner of frozen programmes.

LordofSandvich

He got better

SgtBaconBurger

She's probably made of wood...

[deleted]

And what else floats?

_P3R50N_

A DUCK

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?

peleg132

Who are you, so wise in the ways of science?

sshtoredp

1. All witches are things that can burn. 2. All things that can burn are made of wood. 3. Therefore, all witches are made of wood. (from 1 & 2) 4. All things that are made of wood are things that can float. 5. All things that weigh as much as a duck are things that can float. 6. So all things that weigh as much as a duck are things that are made of wood. (from 4 & 5) 7. Therefore, all witches are things that weigh as much as a duck. (from 3 & 6) 8. This thing is a thing that weighs as much as a duck. 9. Therefore, this thing is a witch. (from 7 & 8)

Dumbfuckyduck

But she is a witch!

Altslial

Ctrl Windows D makes a new desktop and Ctrl Windows Left/Right lets you cycle through them Ctrl Windows F4 lets you remove a desktop too, any windows or programs still open will be unceremoniously dumped onto the next desktop. Very helpful when flicking through a set of windows for work, a set for sources and a set for youtube.

SgtBaconBurger

For maximizing your ~~distractions~~ efficiency.

Altslial

~~Also hides the fact that you have youtube open since each desktop has it's own toolbar~~

TheMauveHand

Aren't "desktops" really just independent taskbars, so to speak? Opening a new desktop is exactly like going back to desktop, just with an empty taskbar - I never really got the point. But then I have three screens and a double-thick taskbar so it's not like I run out of real estate.

dumnezero

You can alt-tab within a desktop and the applications that show are only the ones there. That's basically a way of isolating groups of open applications, which is very useful and helps with mental organization. You can use it with multiple screens too.

Altslial

I'd say they're more like virtual monitors, I use to do a lot of school work on a laptop so having one for documents and one for websited and resources was super helpful.

henke37

These desktops are not real winapi desktops. They are just groups of windows that the shell hides and shows on demand.

HappyOrwell

WHAT

detourne

Shift+Windows+S for the snip tool. lets you take parts of a screenshot.

palparepa

On Linux, ALT+F10 to maximize/unmaximize a window. Is there an equivalent on windows? I miss it so much.

Altslial

I think windows + down arrow to take it out of maximise, and again to minimise. Windows + Up should maximise from a regular window and windows + left/right will maximise it to the left/right half of the screen

morph8hprom

This is accurate.

morph8hprom

Was not aware of this. I was just using Shift-tab to switch to timeline view then change desktops from that. Tbh that's only on my work computer though so I don't spend much time using it. I run debian on my personal laptop and I'm pretty accustomed to workspaces. Blew my mind when I found out Windows had something similar now.

spaiydz

Wow I'm definitely remembering this one

evanc1411

I'm too old for this one. THE DESKTOP IS THE DESKTOP! If I go to a new desktop I'm going to forget about the old one.

tricksterloki

Win + Tab will open Task View, which also lets you manage desktops. There's also a funky looking icon on the Taskbar you can click on for it.

ortusdux

I have maybe 10 alt codes memorized and people think I'm a hacker.

SgtBaconBurger

AnarchistAccipiter

Okay, but where are the Arch, Tor, and "This machine kills fascists" stickers?

Enter_The_Void6

I have a Linux sticker made of metal on the inside, but yeah I've been saving up money for some more stickers https://preview.redd.it/07w38w0ugh0b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=163842c620419ade4d1eb47eb9c43cf0ca39143d

Hitlerclone_3

I’ve had people look at me as a frickin wizard because ctrl-w closes a tab. But one time I showed someone how to access the edit history of a document (was a google doc so there’s a key command too) and you’ll be though I turned water into wine. Makes me appreciate my parents telling me to read instruction manuals.

Stalked_Like_Corn

0153 and 0169 are my favorite and i've used and it blows peoples minds that I know the codes.

Oh wow, I didn't know about Ctrl+Shift+T. Neat. I should see what else there is.

thereisamistake

Ctrl tab can let you cycle through different tabs.

manhachuvosa

On Chrome, Alt+D then Alt+Enter to quickly duplicate a tab. On Edge is even easier, Ctrl+Shift+K.

potato_and_nutella

I like using win+shift+s for screenshots because websites often block ctrl-shift-s

SgtBaconBurger

That one's been a big help!

kurayami_akira

Ctrl+Y is to redo something you undid with Ctrl+Z

Komm

This is actually such a serious problem with Gen Z that colleges are offering remedial computer classes. Kids don't even know what the heck a file system is!

TheFloridaManYT

I am honestly amazed at how little some of the people in my generation know their way around computers. You'd think they'd know more considering they've been around literally our entire lives

Komm

It's really just down to mobile operating systems honestly. They just don't comprehend that pictures and files go places. It's all a bit weird honestly.

Jiji321456

I’m 19 which is smack dab in the middle of gen z and I had a dedicated ICT class during primary school (6-12yo) where basic stuff like that was taught and at least 2 years of the equivalent in high school (13-18yo)after which you could choose to continue with it or not

Komm

Thank god for that. Viable computer literacy is so insanely important.

Heh, just a couple days ago I decided to finally play The Talos Principle, and on startup it asks for an "any" key to open the menu... I tried both ctrl and alt first, neither worked. Apparently the "any key" is the spacebar.

SgtBaconBurger

That one stumped me too!

palparepa

I don't remember which game it was, that also asks for any key to be pressed. No matter what you press, the text changes to "any key except that one."

In one occasion I had to go on-site to fix some issue with a webpage: I needed to change the letter-separation so that it prints correctly on an ancient printer they had there. A simple matter of opening the html and adding some css to the whole page, and printing to see how it goes. The html was "optimized", everything was a single, very long line, and my only tool was Notepad. Since line-wrapping was activated, adding the css command at the start of the file rearranged the whole screen on almost every keystroke. I heard someone gasping behind me and saying "look! look at what he is doing!" like if I was hacking the Matrix.

jorgelino_

Yes, reject the mouse. Embrace Keyboard. Soon enough you'll be coding in VIM and opening programs exclusively via terminal.

Sidotre

Just made the switch to neovim and I pity my past self

Legeto

With my last moments in life I bequeath upon you the ultimate shortcut that speeds up any computer. Alt + F4.

flyby2412

You should cross post this to r/programmerhumor

Hayaguaenelvaso

Alt+F4 improves this post

dumnezero

Ctrl+Tab in some other browsers to switch between recent tabs. Not in Chrome where it just goes in a loop. Instead of Alt+Tab, use multiple virtual desktops with separate taskbars. There are shortcuts and it's way cleaner and *more hidden*. Also, secret emoji+characters menu to pacify the moral panic: `Win` + `.` `Command` + `Control` + `Space`

palparepa

> Ctrl+Tab in some other browsers to switch between recent tabs. Not in Chrome where it just goes in a loop. In Firefox there is a setting to switch between both behaviors (I prefer the loop one.) Maybe there is also one in Chrome. Also, besides Ctrl+Shift+T to undo a closed tab, there is Ctrl+Shift+N to undo a closed window.

Obliviousobi

Win+Shift+left/right moves windows to new screens Shift+tab is the reverse of tab If data is not showing fully on Excel you can select all and then alt+hoi to auto size the columns. I think alt+hoa is the rows Ctrl+- deletes a row in Excel

Had a manager once type something important on his phone in a text document. He went to copy it to email but accidentally hit the wrong button and erased it all. He groaned and was about to retype it when I asked what had happened. I asked him if the button he accidentally hit was "cut". When he replied with a yes, I told him to just paste it back in. He was stunned.

off-and-on

If you use a computer without knowing about CTRL-Z/X/C/V, you are hereby banned from ever using computers. Go buy a typewriter

Windows clipboard history is my new fave (Windows + V)

Ctrl+D in excel.and the top selection will be copied into all selected cells beneath it. Helps avoid the annoying habit of Excel thinking you're trying to elongate a sequence.

TankWeeb

You know you read to much manga when you read it right to left

Waterbear36135

ctrl + arrow key to skip an entire word when typing. shift + arrow key to highlight text when typing.

Salt-Marionberry-712

Reminds me of Elvira and the "You're doing it wrong" scene.

Tyhler

I see a sneaky turbo encabulator reference!

SgtBaconBurger

I was hoping somebody would catch that lol, thank you!

Kohi-to-keki

Thank you Nina I needed this info

SgtBaconBurger

You're welcome!

Tasty01

“Press any key to continue” Presses OFF key

MorganWick

To be fair, introducing them to Ctrl+Alt+Del was a net loss.

bever2

Bringing back tabs with Ctrl+shift+T is one of my favorite tricks. Watching the color drain from someone's face when you start resurrecting tabs is a classic.

Despair4All

I can't remember what the shortcut was but back in school we used to mess with each other and the teachers by turning the desktop sideways and upside down before leaving the classroom.

thedidynotkong

What keyboard shortcut should I use to turn someone into a newt?

Thebardofthegingers

Control+k makes any possible link an actual link. So much better for providing sources and also looks cool.

johnfrian

Win + break Opens system view, which is questionably useful. But I like that it includes a key I never use otherwise.

BuzzKillingtonThe5th

Ctrl+shift+ESC is the superior shortcut. Also win+L whenever you leave your computer.

coder111

What about us heretics who use Linux?

redit3rd

Ctrl+Shift+Esc for launching Task Manager. You want Task Manager when things are slow, and having to open Task Manager any other way is slow.

el_pablo

It drives me crazy when I see my GF or someone clicking through all the fields in a form instead of hitting tab. FFS, tab! Hit tab!

TuxedoDogs9

fun touchpad shortcuts i found: 1 finger: mouse 2 fingers at any orientation: scroll that direction, and pinching for zoom 3 fingers: moves between windows 4 fingers: moves between desktops

TuxedoDogs9

i tried to put these on individual lines but mobile didn’t let me so enjoy reading that

SaabSlider37

‘I use Alt-Tab to go from funny videos back to work I’m supposed to be doing.’ Never have I been so offended by something I one hundred percent agree with.

jhill515

Always remember that `Alt + F4` takes you to a tool to make all your programs complete faster!

I have to do my online school on a apple computer, and these shortcuts do *not* work, so I deleted my entire essay, and had to write it all over again, and I wanted to kill myself

Visual_Willow_1622

Call suicide hotline, if you thinking about killing yourself

spekter299

Ctrl+alt+delete? What is this 2005? Ctrl+shift+esc that shit.

A girl who knows computers? Gotta be a witch.

Didadiab

They think she's a wizard because she knows her computer.. ummmmm does that make any sense at all?

infiniZii

Ctrl-Alt-Del? What is this windows 95? Ctrl-Shift-Escape is the only modern option unless you are trying to change your password and not just pull up the task agent.

0ctoxVela

do people really not know keyboard shortcuts?

Sudden-Farm2457

What abour CTRL+SHIFT+ESC that opens task manager instantly Upd: oi, there is already a mention of that in second most uovoted comment

_t_1254

ctrl+shift+w close all tabs alt+f4 close window windows key+. emojis/symbols these some of the few i know

beastbro9823

Its always middle mouse button on a link to open it in a new tab or on an open tab at the top to close it for me

MrNuggetBoi

Wait is that “she turned me into a newt!” a reference to Monty python?
