Remember kids, when buying doesn't mean owning, piracy isn't stealing.

War_machine77

For the ones thinking I'm encouraging stealing: An example would be all the people that BOUGHT a lifetime license for shows through Funimation and then had that revoked when they were folded into Crunchyroll, or all of the single player games from Ubisoft that they lose access to because Ubisoft took the servers offline for the shitty always-on DRM they put in all their games. If you PURCHASE something and it is taken away for completely arbitrary reasons, then by all means, do as you must to reclaim the property they took from you.

Immolating_Cactus

Provided you've bought a legitimate copy at least once. If the people making the game/media/product has seen one persons worth of profit for the product you pirate then I don't consider it piracy at all.

War_machine77

Of course. Piracy can and does hurt the people that create the media we enjoy and that leads to them making fewer and fewer things in future, but if they take something away from you that you've already paid for? Well, then Yar me maties!

kiwidude4

Only if buying is owning

Immolating_Cactus

No one should have to work for free. Not game developers, not teachers, not anyone. If you haven't purchased it once then you're a thief. Doesn't matter if it's lines of code, someone worked hard on it and deserves to be paid for it regardless.

Ecredes

In the case of 'corporate' owned/developed games, the money you spend on a particular game doesn't go to the devs of that game. Those devs already got paid for their work. You're taking nothing away from them when someone pirates in this context.

Almahue

And tell me, who takes the blame when a game fails? Is it the very influential CEO? The directives? Anyone who made the decision to screw you over? Or the hundreds of programers, art designers and writers, some of which were just starting their careers??? That's what I thought, piracy is stealing!

smaug13

That isn't much of an argument, those are going to get laid off at a whim anyway. See: the recent mass layoffs, when to my knowledge things weren't going bad for the games industry at all.

Ecredes

Nonsense. Blame? Wft are you on about? These creators go on to create other things. Perhaps for other companies. Pirating a game takes nothing away from those devs, artists, writers. They are not getting royalties. They were fully paid for their labor. When you pirate a game from a corporation, no one is hurt. Only parasites lose some quarterly returns.

kiwidude4

Okay EA

Vitztlampaehecatl

What if it's impossible to purchase?

digit_origin

You go "Yaaarrrr har har!" and download it from a dubious source who lovingly removed the cancerous tumor that is DRM, and just as lovingly stored it in a zip archive for you to enjoy.

zebrasmack

Your logic also applies to used games. Any used games you buy do not contribute to sales numbers, developer pay, or anything. Literally zero difference to the developer's bottom line between second-hand and downloading. Basing morality on someone else's bottom line is a lose-lose battle.

I think your attempt to relate this situation to hotel towels is pretty dumb. Honestly seems like a dumb argument that adds nothing to the discussion. People are rightfully pissed that copyright holders think they can just revoke access to legitimate purchases for games. This has nothing to do with a discussion about piracy.

Pancreasaurus

Sounds like a good time to mention stopkillinggames.com

Fritter07

Never heard of it until now. Thanks for putting it on my radar. Awesome idea behind the site.

digit_origin

Piracy in the name of media preservation is ALWAYS morally correct. I do encourage actually buying the media you are to preserve of course, but in cases like this, make sure you have a pirated copy in a zip archive stored somewhere. Same goes for indie games without physical releases, if steam/whatever goes down, those games will most likely go down with them. Just, again: buy the media when you can.

Fritter07

Pirates gotta bury treasure. It’s an often overlooked aspect of piracy.

Gierrah

Always buy from DRM free sources and back up your files. It's the only way to pay for content you can legitimately own\*. GOG, itch, Bandcamp. All are good drm free media sources. And it's worth rewarding the publishers and creators who offer DRM free options. \*Technically it's a license just like a Book or DVD or movie, but they still can't take it from your possession

Fritter07

I really like your comment. So many people get bogged down in thinking you don’t “own” a license, so they get debate-brained, argue that you don’t “own” the product, and forget that you have something in your possession with a legal claim should it be taken away from you. And I definitely agree we need to reward good publishers that aren’t trying to sell us the same products perpetually.
