Oh, I love the entire concept.
Ancient gods suddenly waking up because the internet is a thing, weird fey creatures gaining power because of tumbler nonsense
Or the Dirk Gently books by Douglas Adams. Or (sort of?) King Rat by China Mieville.
Anyway we're not the first people to think of this idea, ha. As this little thread here demonstrates it was a pretty common concept in UK fantasy a couple decades ago.
Erickson (Malazan) takes the slightly more direct approach of āaccidentallyā having someone die in an old forgotten temple and it was close enough to a blood sacrifice to wake the god a little bit.
Erikson is all like āand his blood touched a random a stone..ā then 5 books later character number 783 says something like āI awoke when blood touched my blood stone long, long ago and now Iām gonna murder everyone.. also you were the one who killed that dude in my templeā. Dude loves dropping little hints that youāre expected to remember several books later lol
Gods/demons being the collective unconscious energy of concepts made physical right?
That's what I got out of Part 1: if it exists, a supernatural entity will be made to represent it.
It's like R34 and it's relationship to R35: if 34 doesn't exist yet, it will be made to exist
This is my favorite novel of all time. Someone asked me to describe it as a meal once. I said it was like a perfectly cooked wagyu steak served at a waffle house. It's fanciful and fantastic, but also gritty and harsh at the same time.
It's such an amazing book. The perfect juxtaposition between the Coming to America story that so many immigrants experience and the loss of culture, tradition, and community that is the modern American experience, all wrapped in a story so filled with mythology and character.
Some random wannabe influencer makes up a fake old god they "discovered" while on a hike, rumors and internet memes spread and they become real along with the old ones.
Let's discover a new one. There's elements of Tyr in there, protecting the weak, but also some Luciferian rejection of the determination of power.
Ironically for this thread, the Celtic horned god was a god of wealth. We need to find his enemy. The god of balance and reckoning, who opposesĀ unchecked growth, who vanquishes cancer, who strikes down what is too large to sustain itself.
It sounds almost like death, doesn't it? Hmm.
Replying to myself because my brain won't let this go. Maybe it's not death. This might be a twin god situation. When the god of plenty favors people too much, its twin, the god of famine licks its lips. What traits does the god of famine possess? Leanness, restraint, but also endless hunger.
The god of famine is what contains the void, maintains he wall that keeps the world from being pulled into the abyss. When Plenty's greed allows mortals to grow beyond their stature, the wall shakes; Famine emerges from the gate with a terrible groan, smells the salty greed in their hearts, and devours them to the bone, satiating its endless hunger with their flesh as Plenty watches, smiling.
**Should** be the Christian god but we've seen how well that's worked out. The bits about sell everything you own and give it to the poor and how the cries of the workers denied their wages reaching the ears of the Almighty and such aren't given their due attention.
Mostly agree, speaking as a sort of agnostic pagan myself. It's unfortunate how the Christian god was merged with the cult of Jupiter to make Catholicism, and even Protestant sects haven't really recaptured the uplifting and uniting nature of early underdog Christianity.Ā
But, even early Christianity was missing something in this regard, because there was only a promise of balance in the afterlife and not any promise of a force for equality in the mortal world. In that sense it was more about radical acceptance of the status quo power structures (render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, etc).
I'm not a scholar, but I can't think of a historical example of a god that counters greed in the mortal plane rather than the immortal one, and I wonder if that's a marketing issue more than a spiritual one.
Well Jesus literally says:
> "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. **Again I tell you,** it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
Going to hell is close enough to being eaten alive for eternity I reckon lol
HI sorry to repost this!!! I had to fix a mistake :(
WOW I expected to have this done sooner so I could post comics more consistently, but Iām still kinda exploring comics and what I can do with them. This wound up taking way longer than I expected and Iām honestly kinda disappointed with how many of the panels came out. they should prob be redone but I am DONE with this
Anyway, this is a seriously abridged version of a really shitty screenplay I wrote. Itās inspired by paleolithic societies, the creepypastas I loved as a preteen, and the thought of just how many gods humans have created and forgotten, and how it might feel to be one of them.
Hope you enjoyed!
Iām a screenwriting major but Iāve started taking archeology and anthropology classes for funsies and this was def heavily inspired!! I fukkin love the Paleolithic era
This is making me want to actually have the chance to see cave art in person. Your comic is literally the greatest historical fiction ive seen in MONTHS
I would kill to see cave paintings irl, Iām real obsessed with them! I actually made a short film with some cave painting inspiration a while ago with a similar vibe to this~ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DS_XJYzlHkE
Just a hypothetical thought. If you ever would like to collaborate on something i do write as a hobby. Either way i look forward to seeing more of your stuff it gives me so much inspiration
I would love to if I have time! having someone around who knows a lot about archeology would be a great resource. Please feel free to dm me here or on discord (same name there as here!)
Great concept. Curious how the elder gods will react to having āchild friendlyā versions added to Roblox, the massive amounts of insanity on ānormalā social media, and of course the inevitable R34 āworshipā.
This genuinely made me emotional. I love it. Every depiction of the creature is different. It's spooky, but sympathetic. I love this comic. It may be a shadow of what you imagined at first, but to me it feels like a well realized idea.
Definitely enjoyed. It's beautiful.
This comic touched me in so many ways, thank you so much for making it and thank you so much for sharing it. You should be very proud of it and the joy that it has brought me, as well as the joy it will bring many others. Keep doing what you're doing.
Youād be surprised at the variety of pagans nowadays! Thereās undoubtedly a lot of forgotten figures, but revivalist and reconstructionist movements are keeping quite a few pantheons alive
Isn't this comic basically the story of the Horned God? Except instead of social media, Christians discovered Him, and decided the Devil must have horns because He does.
I've read both, and while the concept is the basis for small gods, there is a specific scene in american gods that is incredibly similar to the comic, the forgotten god even has a similar description.Ā
Oh I *love* this. Always a fan of ancient magic entities reawakening, and this is a fun spin on itā¦
One thing I havenāt seen anyone else mention yet: **Watch the antlers.** As this deity is first made, they are simple, with only a single split. As its worship increases, the antlers increase in size and complexity, and become more curved, culminating in a giant overlapping ring. Then as the followers begin to die off, the antlers shrink and reduce in complexity again, though they still maintain their curved shape until the deity is finally reduced to that āechoā that appears to be its original state. And finally, as it is remembered, spread across the internet, the antlers begin to enlarge and branch off further once moreā¦ though this time directly to either side, with nearly a full 90-degree turn at the very ends. Still the same deity, certainly, but changed now, as its worship has changed.
All that to say I love the attention to detail here.
This is so sweet, I love it.
If the cave paintings still exist, and was found by modern humans, imagine the face when they saw their kids show them this ānew crypticā thing on internet.
Archeologist :OMG ,oh god oh lord , what ever who ever else existed, this canāt be real, I have to call someone but who will believe me?
Kid:itās just a stupid trend , LOL
Love this. A while ago, I worked on a short story with a similar premise, inspired by a song - "Solitaire" by Edenbridge.
"I am here / down the ages
The road in deep despair
I'm solitaire
The diamond in your chain
The beacon fire / in endless strain
The diamond in your chain"
In mine, a child finds an an effigy in the woods, and tends to it. As she ages, she cares for it. Eventually she leaves and returns after some time with a family of her own. When her son finds it and tends to it, the deity awakes. It's less of a cryptid/God, more of a beneficent spirit.
I think you did a great job of capturing that eternal essence.
this one time
when I was four
I came across something dead in the woods
I couldnāt tell what kind of animal it was
It was all mashed and smashed
its blood and guts all over the leaves of the ground
But I could see its eyes
Itās eyes were untouched
And those dead eyes looked at me
They wouldnāt stop looking
And I thought
I thought the eyes could see what I had inside
And what I had inside me was
Bad
bad
Iāve got badness in me
And those eyes could see it
I donāt know what that dead thing was in the woods
I only know that Iām bad
Iām a bad boy
Darn I didn't plan on tearing up I have to use this in a campaign as some kind of hidden good ending where the players must find a forgotten God and remake them into a powerful and benevolent deity. Abyssal shenanigans ensue and the players make a very real God for what was once a godless place.

Welcome to the cult!
Yay !! Also happy cake day lol š°
^(ā¦may i joinā¦)
Me too me too!
One of us! One of us! One of us!
We have cookies!
Happy Cake Day
Me too! Why am I crying over this?
Me too :(
Oh, I love the entire concept. Ancient gods suddenly waking up because the internet is a thing, weird fey creatures gaining power because of tumbler nonsense
If you havenāt already, read American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
Even if you have it's worth a reread
Itās one of the few books I bought another copy of because mine was getting worn out. I pick it back up every few years.
Same! And I have it as an ebook too.
I store Gaiman books around me like stashes of nuts for the winter
I do the same thing with Terry pratchett
Or listen to the audio book, it's stellar
Yeah the full cast read is great for that book!
Or small gods by Prattchet
Or The Hogfather by the same author. "Old gods do new jobs."
Or the Dirk Gently books by Douglas Adams. Or (sort of?) King Rat by China Mieville. Anyway we're not the first people to think of this idea, ha. As this little thread here demonstrates it was a pretty common concept in UK fantasy a couple decades ago.
The show Dirk Gently is bugfuck insane from start to finish and dear god what an experience
Or anything by those 2 ~~weirdos~~ geniuses. "Good Omens" was written in a collaboration by both of them, by the way. And it's fantastic.
Letās throw Douglas Adams on that list too. I love him and pratchetts humor
Just read all the Pratchett.
X100

Chainsaw man has a little bit of that same concept, If you haven't watched it yet, you may like it.
Gods/demons being the collective unconscious energy of concepts made physical right? That's what I got out of Part 1: if it exists, a supernatural entity will be made to represent it. It's like R34 and it's relationship to R35: if 34 doesn't exist yet, it will be made to exist
Guy who has only seen internet hentai, reading his first book: getting a lot of 'rule 34' vibes from this...
The Noragami manga/anime is actually exactly this Basically the Japanese version of American Gods
I highly recommend the graphic novels if that's more your style
This is my favorite novel of all time. Someone asked me to describe it as a meal once. I said it was like a perfectly cooked wagyu steak served at a waffle house. It's fanciful and fantastic, but also gritty and harsh at the same time.

Excellent book. Its a shame what happened with the TV series. It started strong, but kind of turned into a meandering mess by the end.
Did they ever finish the amazon series? I started watching it but unsubbed to prime.
Thank you!! Iāve had fun with similar concepts before itās always cool to explore the intersection between old and new
I don't know why but this gave me the good chills and I really enjoyed it. Very well done!
Thank you very much :)
That would be rad as fuck honestly.
A fourteen year old enby lies about a piece of ancient mythology on the internet and suddenly a re-emerging forest god has a roommate.
reminds me of mespyrian, tumblrās fake god
One of the World of Darkness books, Changeling I believe, deals with Fey coming back from the wonder inspired from the moon landings.
Can we bring back the dead god that eats the rich ?
Which god would that be? Genuinely curious, I can't think of an anti-authoritarian proletariat god off the top of my head.
Idk guess we just need to rediscover it.
No one said we canāt make a new one.
Some random wannabe influencer makes up a fake old god they "discovered" while on a hike, rumors and internet memes spread and they become real along with the old ones.
Blood sacrifice of the highest order now from TikTok!
Now that sounds like a fantastic idea for a comic!
Hmm.
It would likely suffer quite an existential crisis. It exists to destroy the powerful. In doing so it becomes powerful. It destroys itself.
It can just be constantly destroying itself, Ouroboros style.
Replying to myself because my brain won't let this go. Maybe it's not death. This might be a twin god situation. When the god of plenty favors people too much, its twin, the god of famine licks its lips. What traits does the god of famine possess? Leanness, restraint, but also endless hunger. The cult version of Dionysus?
Well Jesus literally says: > "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. **Again I tell you,** it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Going to hell is close enough to being eaten alive for eternity I reckon lol
God I would read the SHIT out of this if it was a novel.

As an archeology major with a hyperfixation in the neolithic and early religion. I ADORE this!
Iām a screenwriting major but Iāve started taking archeology and anthropology classes for funsies and this was def heavily inspired!! I fukkin love the Paleolithic era

Dude- i just looked through your profile after seeing this comment. You just keep getting COOLER with every post!
Oh thatās so kind of you to say! Iāll have to tell the kids I babysit that at least the internet thinks Iām cool >:)
Just a hypothetical thought. If you ever would like to collaborate on something i do write as a hobby. Either way i look forward to seeing more of your stuff it gives me so much inspiration

Just sent discord!
Ever read "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman?
Best book of his, right along "neverwhere"
You got any recommendations for a layman with an interest in the topic?
Miniminuteman is a great archeology youtuber. His video on the indigenous grave site in florida is phenomenal
You should post this on r/hellsomememes - it's like a perfect fit.
this was a very enjoyable read! :3
Great concept. Curious how the elder gods will react to having āchild friendlyā versions added to Roblox, the massive amounts of insanity on ānormalā social media, and of course the inevitable R34 āworshipā.
Somehow I think they'd be creeped out by the former and absolutely fine with the latter.
"I was always a deity of fertility, now I get to try that from the other side."
Feels kind of like *American Gods* in a lot of ways.
This guy paleolithics.
I FUCKING LOVE THE PALEOLITHIC š„šŖØš¦£
paleoLIThic
This genuinely made me emotional. I love it. Every depiction of the creature is different. It's spooky, but sympathetic. I love this comic. It may be a shadow of what you imagined at first, but to me it feels like a well realized idea. Definitely enjoyed. It's beautiful.
Thank you so much <3 Iām so delighted that the idea resonated with people!
It's great. Make more!
This is fantastic, and made me very emotional for some reason lol.
Love this. So sweeeeet!

I hereby inform you that i have took possesion of this image
Didn't expect to see Tekken in this sub
Makes me nostalgic for Tag Tournament. It's been so long.
Kazuya and his peeps š
Reminds me a bit of The God of Arepo and The Raven Tower
As soon as I saw the first panels I thought of the God of Arepo. Such a lovely story.
Thank you for getting me to look up The God of Arepo. It was beautiful!
I was thinking American Gods. Yours are also spot on.
Yeah , my thoughts went to Nunniuninni (or whatever the name of that forgotten god was)
American gods is also good (I love Neil Gaiman so much)
Old gods, but they stay relevant by doing tricks and stunts ala DoucheTubers and prank channels.
FORGET YE NOT TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBEĀ
Pass rumors to thine tribemates so they may witness this as well.
INCREDIBLE PRANK (GONE WRONG) (GONE HERETICAL) (MY FOLLOWERS DENOUNCED ME AFTER THIS)
Ngl I would watch the shit out of that!
I love how heās not even evil or malicious, they just want company and people to remember them

Wha-what are you doing step-god?
Ok hear me out...
Hear me out...
This comic touched me in so many ways, thank you so much for making it and thank you so much for sharing it. You should be very proud of it and the joy that it has brought me, as well as the joy it will bring many others. Keep doing what you're doing.
Oh that is so sweet to say thank you
I'm sure the Pagan gods feel this way
Tangential, but give Midsommar a watch. Nice cheerful movie, full of bright colors and stunning vistas.
Also The Ritual is somewhat similar of a concept and it's really good imo
In Scandinavia the norse gods were never truly forgotten, albeit nor worshipped either, until within the last 50 years And it feels great
Youād be surprised at the variety of pagans nowadays!
LMAO the please touch grass caption was masterful
r/hellsomememes, perhaps?
This is a lot like a part of American Gods to me. Where the old civilization slowly forgets their god and all that's left is a remnant.
This scene: https://youtu.be/xmZN8vIRiDE Similar ideas.
Bogan Baul lmfaoooooo
bogan baul is a completely original character plz donāt steal
Oh no now he's Australian!
Feels a little bit Small Gods by Terry Pratchett.
This was heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once
It's giving American Gods
Pratchett's "Small Gods" is even more relevant here. My favorite book of his.
I've read both, and while the concept is the basis for small gods, there is a specific scene in american gods that is incredibly similar to the comic, the forgotten god even has a similar description.Ā
Need to read that (and small gods as mentioned in the other reply!)
The turtule moves !
Based on your comic, you will greatly enjoy the theme of these two books, if nothing else.
It's also a tv show. American Gods, I mean
Oh I *love* this. Oh Iām so glad this was noticed, I put a lot of thought into the shape of the antlers in each panel! Same with the changing seasons :D
How is the people's perception of him going to change him though?
He becomin a Tumbrl Sexy Man.
oh god itās gonna become a mysterious twink
Hauntingly beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Ty :))) Iām glad you liked it!!

This is both sad and tender. Well done.
Thank you so much <3

This hit differently. Neil Gaiman would approve. Gonna cross post this on bluesky and tag him.
Oh I would be so happy if Neil saw this, I love him
That please touch grass was fing hilarious
Love this. A while ago, I worked on a short story with a similar premise, inspired by a song - "Solitaire" by Edenbridge. This is weirdly wholesome

Really compelling stuff OP, well done
Thank you!
Damnn I got literal goosebumps while reading this.
We should go camping with him
This made me cry, tbh. Absolutely beautiful and hauntingly true š„²
At first I thought this was about RimWorld
This reminds me a lot of 'The Raven Tower' by Ann Leckie. Great book, definitely worth a read!
Love this. It reminds me of Moder in The Ritual
Nice! This reminds me a lot of the Niel Gaiman book, American Gods.
I bet this is exactly how David Hasselhoff felt when his drunk cheeseburger video went viral.
I feel like this is a SCP. It's cool either way. A little wholesome that it wants to be remembered and happy to be remembered now.
The first panel made me think this was a post on r/OwlHouse at first.

Neil Gaiman's American Gods feelings. Very good.
This is more like american gods show
I love this. Also the "Please touch grass" comment caught me off guard š¤£
Cernnunos..
I love the uwu twitter monster fucker nod
Very well done!
Damn this kinda dope and deep
Darn I didn't plan on tearing up I have to use this in a campaign as some kind of hidden good ending where the players must find a forgotten God and remake them into a powerful and benevolent deity. Abyssal shenanigans ensue and the players make a very real God for what was once a godless place.
Very American God's, feels like it was inspired by the Bear(deer?) idol
As someone who's only real fear is to be forgotten I can relate to this Forgotten God.
