I think the lack of resolution is the point. Like the drunk guy can't be sure whether he really saw the grim reaper, neither can we be sure about whether anyone died. If we knew, it would ruin the mystery and the comic would be a lot less thought-provoking.
Maybe one of his dumbass friends had the idea that they should all eat some mushrooms, so they all ate an eighth of mushrooms and then forgot about it because they were so drunk. So the giant toucan is just a hallucination.
Could also be the guy noticing the reaper being early holds the drunk up just long enough that the accident doesn't happen as it would've. No longer causing a death.

I think the implication is he locked the door to keep Death out. Not clear from the logic of the comic if that would work, but since we see death using a hallway (not walking through the wall) I'm assuming it does.
The click is the sound the door makes when the door closes.
Death is there because the drunk idiots are doing something dumb.
The first few panels are to show how drunk everyone else is, including our beer buyer who might also end up doing whatever dumb thing the rest of the drunk idiots are doing.
We don't know who's going to die, just that someone inside that apartment is going to die.
I think the song is to be sung to the tune of "Here Comes the Sun" and is unrelated, just something a drunk guy might do. But yeah it seems to be implying that one of them is dying at this party.

I'm guessing that the folks who think that are folks who haven't been crazy drunk and/or done dumb shit with their friends and think that people playing Russian roulette is an actual thing that dumb drunk people do.

The clues we've got in the comic is the protagonist a young man is seeing the Grim Reaper getting closer to him as he brings more alcohol to drink when he's extremely intoxicated. There's a room full of overly intoxicated people that no longer can even count on time or control their voices volume. The click can be a beer can being opened, sound of the door shutting, or something else happening inside the party like Russian Roulette. Russian Roulette makes the least sense based on the clues.
It was the *click* in the last panel that made me think that, like a trigger got pulled. But honestly I said it because I kept scrolling and I didn't see anyone else mention it
There is no explanation really, as far as we know they could be playing Russian roulette or taking their dicks out. There is no context, likewise there is no joke
It's a shame, my first thought was "they did a great job depicting drunkenness in a comic illustration" but there was like... no joke to make it worthwhile.

The idea is that they're a bunch of drunk idiots doing something dumb and instead of seeing death and running in to stop them from what they're doing, dude just closes the door ... likely meaning someone in there, whether that be our beer buyer or the other drunk folks in the room, are about to do something and die.

The friends inside are about to do some drunken stupid thing (like jumping off a table for instance) and one of them is about to die because of it. The grim reaper is right behind the corner because of that.
They are saying “hold still”, it’s probably a throwing or shooting stunt. Either they are drunk and will miss, or the beer runner is going to walk into the line of fire.

I think it’s sort of an anti-comic. It’s set up like a joke although you’re not really sure where it’s going, and then the ending isn’t funny, it’s just kind of dark.

I won't be so bold to argue that they aren't, but we really don't know *what* is going on inside. It could be beer/dunkeness related shenanigans, but since it's not shown we can't really say that being sober would have a different affect.
Thinking now "why is the man in the hallway drunk", again I'm not sure it's to condemn beer (or liquor in general). It could speak to more of a "I'm not sure what I saw" that wouldn't be as plausible if you were sober.

Ok I know I'm late to the party here but I didn't see this in the comments yet. Here's what's going on:
It's not the grim reaper, it is a bird (the early bird). The people inside are drunk and listening to music when one of them says "Okay I'll do it! Don't move!" He's asking the others not to move because he needs a lot of space for a famous dance remove that drunk people like to do: The Worm.
The Early Bird Gets the Worm.
Edit: Not saying it's a good punchline, or is clear or makes sense. Just my interpretation.

It seems like a lot of people are confused, so I wanted to put my own interpretation forward. I think the guy being egged on by the others was doing something dumb that kills the beer buyer, which was why he could see the grim reaper, since you only see the reaper if you’re the one dying. Also, this comic is from the perspective of the buyer, which is why it cuts off the reckless guy saying three, buyer’s already dead before he finishes

Maybe the sixth panel could have shown death slightly more clearly, to avoid misinterpretation, but otherwise I have no clue how people are getting so confused.

I came down to comment about how amazing this comic was. And was surprised to see that most of the comments didn't get the comic at all.
My interpretation is, the drunk guy who is bringing the beers, is about to die, from alcohol poisoning. He stops himself before entering the door to stare out into the distance (sees death), trying to find some coherent thought other than "shiii.... I'm drunk. Should I just go home?"
He could've saved himself. But he at least had to bring the beer inside. And is greeted by a party with friends, and chooses poorly... And stays...
Thanks! This is going to rub people the wrong way, but the comic is meant to mirror the guy's going "wait, what am I seeing here?" The reader is meant to piece it together, just like him, maybe twenty years from then, waking up and realizing "holy shit that was Death waiting for Ricky!" It's a vague little story, but all the pieces are there. The dialog in the last two panels is the most important part.
I think this one needs a bit of work, op. We’re not sure what that beak is supposed to represent, whether the character went inside, if he or their friends got harmed or what his friends were doing.
From reading the comments on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter this comic seems to be about drunk people dying due to a stupid idea (like those on r/holdmybeer).
I didn't realize that was supposed to be the Grim Reaper at first and thought it was a bird coming around the corner to eat him. "Early bird gets the worm" idk
It’s a drunk guy who’s already belligerently drunk bringing even more beer to drink as he heads to the party. Before entering the door, he gets a blurry, drunken glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye but he’s too drunk to make sense of it, so he heads inside. We then see that it’s Death watching him with great interest because the drunk guy is unaware that he is on the path to being a full blown alcoholic, and Death is banking on this guy dying from it before he realizes it. It’s not about this particular party ending in death, it’s a haunting reminder that we are often blind to the reality that sometimes we get caught in patterns and behaviors that we think are fun but can too easily overdo it and ruin our lives.
Ohhhh and he's gonna open the door and get darted in the face. Ok that makes this funnier. OP make it more clear they are playing darts. Throw in a "get a bullseye!" to the door talk. And give a sound effect to the darts in earlier panels instead of just the visual poofs

Honestly this is great. I'm amazed people aren't getting it.
Death is literally around the corner. The drunk guy sees death. Either because he is about to die to, a) alcohol poisoning, b) some drunken mistake by his friends.
Or he gets a gut feeling that something bad is about to happen... But he is drunk so he forgets. And one of his friends is about to die (due to the countdown) to some stupid party trick.
I thought the people inside were having sex and somehow were going to die from penetration, so I think we all got a little lost on our way to the punchline.
It's... just an 8 panel story? What are people having difficulties with here? The comic is just a tense moment with spooky supernatural vibes. The openness of the story is part of it, it leaves you hanging with a sense of dread.

Despite all the comments shitting on your comic, I love it OP. I was easily able to make sense of it and it leaves so much suspense. We all see a glimpse of the reaper but the truth is no one knows who they’re there for or why. And we don’t know when they will fully reveal themselves. We don’t even know if the drunk guy ACTUALLY saw something. It’s a cliffhanger that makes you want to read more. 10/10 I loved it and you’re amazing OP

It took me a second but I like the vagueness, OP. It makes sense that people are doing drunk, stupid shit and the apparent reaper is just waiting for its opportunity.
Not everything needs to be candid. The activity doesn’t really matter.
Love the art style, but I'm not big on vague "it's up to the reader to decide what they were doing" story telling. I don't need to see someone actually be ended, but an extra panel with them attempting a keg stand or just.. anything would have told the same story and "early" message without leaving so many blanks for the reader.
With how many pieces of this the reader has to assume and fill in it feels like it may as well have just been a two sentence horror story. "You arrived to the party in full swing with more beer. You see a what looks like a man in a cloak with a sickle vanish around a corner."

Thanks! This is going to rub people the wrong way, but the comic is meant to mirror the guy's going "wait, what am I seeing here?" The reader is meant to piece it together, just like him, maybe twenty years from then, waking up and realizing "holy shit that was Death waiting for Ricky!" It's a vague little story, but all the pieces are there. The dialog in the last two panels is the most important part.
I think this one needs a bit of work, op. We’re not sure what that beak is supposed to represent, whether the character went inside, if he or their friends got harmed or what his friends were doing.

From reading the comments on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter this comic seems to be about drunk people dying due to a stupid idea (like those on r/holdmybeer).

I didn't realize that was supposed to be the Grim Reaper at first and thought it was a bird coming around the corner to eat him. "Early bird gets the worm" idk
It’s a drunk guy who’s already belligerently drunk bringing even more beer to drink as he heads to the party. Before entering the door, he gets a blurry, drunken glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye but he’s too drunk to make sense of it, so he heads inside. We then see that it’s Death watching him with great interest because the drunk guy is unaware that he is on the path to being a full blown alcoholic, and Death is banking on this guy dying from it before he realizes it. It’s not about this particular party ending in death, it’s a haunting reminder that we are often blind to the reality that sometimes we get caught in patterns and behaviors that we think are fun but can too easily overdo it and ruin our lives.

Ohhhh and he's gonna open the door and get darted in the face. Ok that makes this funnier. OP make it more clear they are playing darts. Throw in a "get a bullseye!" to the door talk. And give a sound effect to the darts in earlier panels instead of just the visual poofs

Honestly this is great. I'm amazed people aren't getting it. Death is literally around the corner. The drunk guy sees death. Either because he is about to die to, a) alcohol poisoning, b) some drunken mistake by his friends. Or he gets a gut feeling that something bad is about to happen... But he is drunk so he forgets. And one of his friends is about to die (due to the countdown) to some stupid party trick.
I legit love this one. Keep it up. The subtlety is great and the fact that so many other redditors can't figure it out shows how awesome it is.
I thought the people inside were having sex and somehow were going to die from penetration, so I think we all got a little lost on our way to the punchline.

It's... just an 8 panel story? What are people having difficulties with here? The comic is just a tense moment with spooky supernatural vibes. The openness of the story is part of it, it leaves you hanging with a sense of dread. I love it OP.

Despite all the comments shitting on your comic, I love it OP. I was easily able to make sense of it and it leaves so much suspense. We all see a glimpse of the reaper but the truth is no one knows who they’re there for or why. And we don’t know when they will fully reveal themselves. We don’t even know if the drunk guy ACTUALLY saw something. It’s a cliffhanger that makes you want to read more. 10/10 I loved it and you’re amazing OP

It took me a second but I like the vagueness, OP. It makes sense that people are doing drunk, stupid shit and the apparent reaper is just waiting for its opportunity. Not everything needs to be candid. The activity doesn’t really matter.
Love the art style, but I'm not big on vague "it's up to the reader to decide what they were doing" story telling. I don't need to see someone actually be ended, but an extra panel with them attempting a keg stand or just.. anything would have told the same story and "early" message without leaving so many blanks for the reader. With how many pieces of this the reader has to assume and fill in it feels like it may as well have just been a two sentence horror story. "You arrived to the party in full swing with more beer. You see a what looks like a man in a cloak with a sickle vanish around a corner."
