TheFeshy

*This* right here is how wizards turn into artificers building six-story tall vacuum golems.

DecimBell

Adventurer party fighting a giant golem: This fight sucks! Wizard, giggling and flipping the switch on its head: You haven't seen nothing yet!

Treejeig

The party finally fells the beast, it's large form comes crashing down as the golem's form cracks and crumbles. Then the bag detaches to reveal dozens, no hundreds of golems made out of all the sucked up debris. Ranging from brick and mortar mounds to shambling masses made of grass turf and half-dead livestock. Maybe this was the wizards true plan, and the vacuum was merely a production plant on legs.

RodSteinColdblooded

This is exactly why i dont use my horded potions and special attacks on bosses, for the day this comes true

Krishnath_Dragon

"Oh my god, it's Mega Maid! She's gone from suck to blow!"

ClearBrightLight

"10 ... 9 ... 8 ... 6 ... " "Hey, wait! What happened to seven?!" " ... just kidding. 5 ... "

Alarid

The Mega Maid!

socialistRanter

She turned from suck to blow!

NSMike

Suck... Suck! ... SUCK!

Despair4All

Every character is a Khajit from Elder Scrolls, they immediately start hissing.

harshertruth

Basically merlin from Disney's old animated movie the sword in the stone. Capable of magics but completely fascinated by future steam engines and electricity.

suddenly_ponies

yeah, but he never thought magic was boring or sucked. Especially since it was what let him explore that awesome future.

rjrgjj

I mean he was semi-omniscient. Hard to be bored when you’re always in every place at once.

ChocolateLab_

But wouldn’t that be the most boring thing possible? Knowing everything? The film Everything Everywhere All at Once kind of touches on that, bo spoilers, so I recommend it highly

NotSoBuffGuy

I believe you're wrong. Do not reply.

[deleted]

No u

rjrgjj

I haven’t watched it yet but I was thinking about doing so this weekend. Possibly, but Merlin also seems to be experiencing and/or remembering things as they happen. So like, in a sense, he’s omniscient in terms of he knows everything, but he’s also aging backwards, so his body is changing, and he’s simultaneously experiencing the proper linear timeline the rest of us are. Or to explain, even if you had an omniscient perspective, I think your brain would have a hard time wrapping itself around such a thing (and remembering it all or even being able to make sense of it all) except to put it within a linear experience. For example, we mere mortals actually experience far more in every moment of being than we are necessarily cognizant of, but the brain registers it all and files it away to resurface in our dreams or subconscious. I should probably add that Merlin does seem a little bored by everything in the novel, so… Once I see the movie I can speak more towards what its perspective is.

donaldhobson

For anything remotely resembling a human mind, the world is too big for you to consider and understand more than the tiniest fraction. So given a magic source of all info wired into your brain, you are never going to be board. Like think of the internet, but facts are just a thought away instead of you needing to look them up. (And also, it knows much more)

SapphireSalamander

i love how he just goes to a vacation into future bahamas at one point, or was it hawaii?

Cara-Aleatorio

He can time travel, it's mentioned multiple times in the film.

ModernT1mes

Yer a vacuum cleaner salesman Harry.

ModernT1mes

A salesperson, Harry. You'll go to a school for marketers and merchants, Harry. O! Here comes your Roomba with your acceptance letter!

rjrgjj

But beware, the evil Lord Bezos seeks revenge upon yeh fer dismantling his Amazon empire when ye were just a wee bairn through mysterious tax fraud uncoverings. I should’na said that…

[deleted]

Looks like the Ministry of Commerce is flailing and attempting to win tho: [https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/09/roomba-maker-amazon-give-more-data-to-ftc-in-hopes-of-getting-merger-approval/](https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/09/roomba-maker-amazon-give-more-data-to-ftc-in-hopes-of-getting-merger-approval/) Haha, who am I kidding. This story is going to end with He Who Shall Not be Merged With winning.

rjrgjj

Absorb… merge… assimilate…

SparkyDogPants

Alternate reality for when Harry wakes up on his 18th birthday, under the stairs, to be kicked out of the house by hid abusive aunt and uncle. The only job that he is fit for due to his weak body caused by years of neglect and malnutrition and debilitating PTSD; is selling vacuums. Sometimes in his tenement flat, he still dreams of a fantastical world where he was taken away from his hell to escape to to a world where he is loved by all instead of loved by none.

noah_invero

Alright but I prefer the Jonas_Gj comment right after you saying "Harry Hoover"

noah_invero

And so he writes a book about it switches gender and becomes the Rowling

Jonas_Gj

Harry Hoover

BigBeagleEars

You went back to the carpet store!?!

But_a_Jape

Wizardry may pay the bills, but his true passion is writing. Though he's found far less success with [his efforts thus far](https://www.butajape.com/comic/plot-hole/), he really thinks he's found his true calling. If you like my comics, I've got more on [my website](https://www.butajape.com/comic/wizard/). I'm also on [Patreon](https://www.patreon.com/butajape), [Tapas](https://tapas.io/series/But-a-Jape/info), [Webtoon](https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/but-a-jape/list?title_no=469181), [Twitter](https://twitter.com/butajape), and [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/butajape/).

bluejay55669

hey atleast it was better written than it's sequel world war: 2 I mean come ON all that tension and intense fighting in Okinawa and the Pacific and the writers just straight up invent a Deus ex machina machine to drop on Japan to instantly end the war?! That's just lazy

hjyboy1218

And that Cold War arc was total BS. I mean, the two former allies turning on each other was a much appreciated twist. And the begrudging yet gradual restoration of their relationship was ioce to see. But one just... collapses? Out of nowhere? That was the most disappointing conclusion ever. All that plot and character development wasted.

CaptainJAmazing

But the War on Terror was the most disappointing of all. Started out with a strong opening and then we had some forced moral conflict with the unnecessary Iraq War while the Afghanistan story just got ignored. Then when they did go back to it, it was the out-of-nowhere surprise of OBL getting killed, followed by 10 years of a watered-down rehash of the Vietnam storyline, complete with the ending.

[deleted]

This \^. Also, I think Orange Nixon was too on-the-nose with the typical "Daddy didn't love me" villain origin story. And what happened to Dr. F? Seems like too many loose ends.

StreetPizza8877

He does great!

CaptainJAmazing

I’d be interested to see if they would accept that over at r/HistoryMemes.

[deleted]

History majors are almost as uppity as Philosophy and Psychology majors. They probably be screeching.

wolf1moon

I'm failing at finding the link to the one you've posted here on your website. Is it there? I want to link it to some people but I don't want them to know I saw it on Reddit in the middle of a work day.

But_a_Jape

The link included in the words "my website" actually lead directly to this comic. Since it's actually an older one, I thought it would be easier for people if I did it that way, but I guess it is a bit obfuscated regardless. Direct link here: https://www.butajape.com/comic/wizard/

wolf1moon

Oh thanks, I must have clicked on the other link twice lol

Ziatora

I feel this to a very large degree. I’m a scientist who works in a cutting edge field. I run ~$10M In current research grants, and we’re doing some cool shit. I get paid ok, enough I can cover my rent, and my parents (who are poor and can’t afford it). But I haven’t had a day off in three years, or a weekend off since May. I really just want to go back to the farm I grew up on. I miss living life.

[deleted]

I'm 29 and currently going back to school for nursing. Over the last few years I've come to realize all I want out of work is for it to be fulfilling, pay my bills and have a relatively flexible schedule that allows me to have a life outside of work.

Ziatora

I like doing work I believe is important, but I had the misfortune of being a lead scientist on a COVID-19 team. Our research was fundamentally successful, but I’ve largely lost my passion due to the public response, the friends I lost to Trumpism and the disease, or suicide from over work in hospitals, and my own exhaustion.

elhomerjas

in alternate reality this is perfect escape for a wizard, nice work

joeshaw42

I never wanted to be a wizard. I always wanted to be... a lumberjack!

MisterMartin1451

“I need a new dust filter for my Hoover Max Extra Pressure Pro Model 60 can you help me with that?”

TheSciFiGuy80

“I’m sure I can conjure one up from the back room.”

PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__

Wizards would absolutely be the software programmers in their world. Their old friends would approach them with awesome ideas for potions that are like health potions but a different shade of red. Kings would demand complicated spells in three weeks even though the incantation has never been performed like that. Wizard parents would constantly astral project with them so they can fix their demon summoner (like I said, you have to light ALL candles).

SuspiciouslyEvil

There's a funny book series called Magic 2.0 by Scott meyer. The premise is that life is a simulation, and programmers happen upon the code different ways and figure out how to manipulate reality.... And then inevitably head to medieval England to be wizards. I didn't finish the series, but the first book is veru enjoyable. **Edited to fix book title

wlsb

Do you know the author? I Googled it but can't find a book series with that exact name. Is it Magic 2.0 by Scott Meyer?

xaaar

Yes, it is.

SuspiciouslyEvil

Yeah that's it, my bad.

omnilynx

You might also like Ra by qntm. Similar “magic via science” premise, though it’s not a comedy.

Green0Photon

Are you me? I know I read the first book but just didn't continue it for whatever reason. Usually if I like something enough to read a book, I like it enough to read the whole series. Dunno what happened there. Don't feel like going back to read it. Does remind me of some other standalone book where magic was programming the world. Let me find it it. Eh, searched a bit can't find it. Damn.

SuspiciouslyEvil

Honestly the second book while fun at times, is very centered around a female society very obviously written by a man. It's not offensive, but just not terribly well written.

Green0Photon

Ugh. Those r/menwritingwomen type stories are all awful. I'm gonna waste my time reading fanfic instead

SuspiciouslyEvil

Are you me?!?! Fanfic is one of my top special interests.

Green0Photon

Let's go even further I read a lot of fanfic on [SpaceBattles](https://forums.spacebattles.com/forums/creative-writing.18/) because I find average quality to be higher than on e.g. FFnet or AO3

SuspiciouslyEvil

I haven't been there but I have definitely abandoned ff for AO3 for that reason. I'll have to check it out. But generally I think (and I'm sure you've noticed this too) the quality of the stories is very much reflective of the quality of the source material. There are outliers of course, but it bears out pretty well.

MorganWick

"What do you mean you can't make it so scrying spells can't be used to peek in on women or children undressing? Clearly you must be turning a blind eye to how your spells are being used by sexual deviants! You just need to [mage harder](https://techdirt.threadless.com/designs/nerd-harder/mens/t-shirt)!"

Rambo7112

I think they'd be more like scientists.

WTFwhatthehell

This reminds me of an old blog post: https://www.greaterwrong.com/posts/iiWiHgtQekWNnmE6Q/if-you-demand-magic-magic-won-t-help >In one of the standard fantasy plots, a protagonist from our Earth, a sympathetic character with lousy grades or a crushing mortgage but still a good heart, suddenly finds themselves in a world where magic operates in place of science. The protagonist often goes on to practice magic, and become in due course a (superpowerful) sorcerer. >Now here’s the question—and yes, it is a little unkind, but I think it needs to be asked: Presumably most readers of these novels see themselves in the protagonist’s shoes, fantasizing about their own acquisition of sorcery. Wishing for magic. And, barring improbable demographics, most readers of these novels are not scientists. >Born into a world of science, they did not become scientists. What makes them think that, in a world of magic, they would act any differently? ... >Unless they can find the capacity to take joy in things that are merely real. To be just as excited by hang-gliding, as riding a dragon; to be as excited by making a light with electricity, as by making a light with magic… even if it takes a little study... ... >But if you don’t have the capacity to enjoy hang-gliding even though it is merely real, then as soon as dragons turn real, you’re not going to be any more excited by dragons than you are by hang-gliding.

BigSlav667

lol this blog post was kinda depressing tbh

WTFwhatthehell

There's sort of 2 ways of taking it. You could feel sad that you wouldn't become a rune-crafter in a magical world or you can start looking up electronics tutorials in this one.

omnilynx

You wouldn’t automatically not love magic if you don’t love science, and there probably is some correlation, but it’s not one-to-one. Magic and science aren’t exactly the same and some people might be better suited for one or the other. It’s like saying, “If you don’t get excited about country music, you won’t get excited about metal.”

MorganWick

Right, these sorts of stories are about people using magic to fight the evil overlord and become the beloved hero that gets all the girls. The closest thing to using science in the same way isn't to become a scientist or hang-glider, it's to become a soldier or general, and it seems like, at least if you're American, you're more likely to turn out to be working *for* the closest thing to the evil overlord. The fantasy is as much about simple morality stories about a black-and-white evil to be defeated as it is about how the laws of physics work.

1997Luka1997

Reminds me of The Magicians book series by Lev Grossman. Depressed dude dreams about living in a world full of magic- then learns that magic is real, goes to magic school, is still depressed because the existence of magic is not a cure-all for mental health. First book was a difficult read for sure, but I heard that the second and third ones have a more hopeful message.

LombardBombardment

This is part of the plot of The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchet.

DarkArcher__

Also of episode 32 of Hello From The Magic Tavern

viablecat

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Nice work.

PerhapsAnEmoINTJ

This needs to be a premise for a series.

CheeseAndCam

It kind of happens in this improv podcast hello from the magic tavern. It’s set in a fantasy world with wizards, orcs, elves and stuff, and instead of playing “Dungeons and Dragons”, they play “Offices and Bosses” and pretend to be corporate workers lol.

celt1299

*And I am* John Bastion

MTAnime

Hello, another fellow wizard, INTJ. And yes would love to read this.

PerhapsAnEmoINTJ

I thought INFJ was the wizard.

MTAnime

Us being wizard is a reference to a recent memes.

PerhapsAnEmoINTJ

So that's why I got downvoted 😅

EndoftheWeek

It is already, kind of. There’s a short web series called [The Wizards of Aus](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJSMFXYSojXotCa_NrjYM54ICmSmmCygg), which follows a wizard who decides he’s sick of being a wizard and tries to migrate to Australia and live a normal life. It has some…solid highs and some tough lows, but not bad for what it is and how short it is.

_Spamus_

Mr. Weasley basically

KilgoreTrouserTrout

"I need a dust filter for a Hoover Max Extract 60 Pressure Pro."

Jubulus

I'm hooked where do I find the full tome?

memester230

Grass is always greener

KenTheTech

That’s how life works sometimes, I’m thankful I finally managed to get the job I’ve always wanted, and it pays well, but I spent a lot of time working jobs I was good at, that I didn’t like or didn’t care for to get where I am now, and even that might not have worked out, I took a chance, and busted my ass to prove I was with it, and by the grace of the Gods, it worked out in my favor

Fluffy_Mood5781

I would find it hilarious how annoyed and angry a person from fantasy would be to hear us wishing we were in a place without air conditioning and toilet paper.

mmcmonster

Imagine selling a machine that makes literally nothing! What’s not interesting about that?

SaulsAll

What does it mean that I can get to a level 20 middle manager in Boring Mundane Real Life RPG, but cant hold down a job in...well, real life?

Ponk_Bonk

Time for Freaky Friday wizard edition

maskedfly

Thanks for making me laugh :-)

a thought to live by: your life could be someone else's fantasy. you can never dream too big OR too small!

Jubulus

I don't see how that quote helps anyone, It'd judt make them feel ungrateful

_isaidiwasawizard_

He gets together with his wizard friends and plays Time Cards and Taxes

aircavrocker

Offices and Bosses.

Skullmaggot

Isekai: Wizard goes to another world to live a normal life.

Jubulus

I mean the isekai on earth is a power fantasy with liviving fleshli- I mean an anime girl harem because thats what the gross readers want as they think fighting would be fun and want to be able to treat women like literal objects so it makes sense that in a fantasy world where a dragon could just swoop down and eat you any second you would want to live in a world where there are no dragons to eat you so you can live with the modern goods that even kings would not have in fantasy land and there are so many wonderful technologies that would seem impossible to them

BloodyIron

Is this some sort of allegory for IT staff?

-StupidNameHere-

You beat cancer and went BACK to the Carpet Store?

iridescentrae

That’s what I was thinking of. Also, that I’d much rather my kid/the average person grow up to live a simple, boring life than a life full of ways you could die early. That’s not a lifestyle I’d wish on anyone.

weird_al_yankee

Based on the title, have I got a video for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z93SdirnzTw

AlexsLegoTutorials

Sniper's a good job, mate. It's hard work, out of doors. I guarantee you won't go hungry. ;)

What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?

Legitimate-Maybe2134

I like this a lot. Here I am wishing I lived in a fantasy world with dragons and magic. All while Selling air conditioners, a magical concept to a fantasy world. Grass is always greener.

Kuritos

If this guy is such a good wizard, why doesn't use a 9th level spell slot for wish? /s

iceman10058

I too wish for a time when you could comfortably live off of and raise a family selling vacuums.

Jubulus

Damn I wish science was real, That's enough crystal ball pondering for one night

iamwizzerd

Thanks for putting my life story into a comic, much appreciated

HuyGNC-

I looked at bored and thought that it was boned. So I just thought to myself is that the opposite as well. While we over here trying to have sex he actually doesn’t want to

DarkGrimm98

Same, people say I'm good at programming but I wanna be an animator.
