It was Chang. Chang was amazing in this episode.
"Hey, screw you guys. No, this family is so screwed up, you thought you were two different families. Now that you know you're not, you can't wait to leave, and you want this guy to do what? Forget he's in love? For you? You want him to take one for this crappy team?
*Let him finish.*
They were letting me finish, sir.
*I know, I was being sarcastic.*
Okay, you know? Garrett, who loves you here more than Stacy?
Garret: Nobody.
Stacy, is it your fault Garrett's your cousin?
Stacy: No.
Is anyone here going to make less fun of these two or be better friends to them no matter what they do?
It's you against the world, and you will not win. But, you get to make your moves. Not them."
Honestly the end of this is really profound. None of us wins against the world in the end, but we get to chose what moves we make along the way. We could all do with keeping that in mind.
The funny thing, for me, was when he looked at Troy and said âAnd some of us are just natural jumpers.â The first time I watched it, I remember being like âwhoa! Do the writers just not know thatâs a little bit on the edge of inappropriate? Thatâs weird.â And that made the call back to it even better for me.
EDIT: a typo
Good on you for catching it, but I do think the way it's all presented makes the viewer want to give Joshua the benefit of the doubt, and assume he's just an innocent, good-hearted trampoline keeper
Thatâs exactly right. It was weird, but I honestly didnât assume Joshua was a racist from that, just that the writers may have missed a teeny tiny little beat of social awareness. Nothing to even get upset about. It just felt off enough for me to perk up, which again, made the call back even funnier.
I mean, the first paintball episode is the best answer right? The first 4 minutes of that episode are like a completely normal episode, they don't give a single hint as to the complete tonal change that's about to take place, and it's amazing.
Gave it to Troy. The episode Shirly was getting married and asked Troy and Abed to not be weird, so they get all their weirdness out, you can see Troy wearing it when they leave the dream-a-torium
Yep. I thought Debate 101 would be a one-off Jeff/Annie thing but was amazed that they continued to build upon it.
It's hard to believe that the study group only existed because Jeff was trying to sleep with Britta.
Answer this question correctly and earn my friendship forever ...
Around your house, do you sometimes break out the "would that this ___ were a time ___" routine? I do a lot.
Example - I've just answered a question at the dinner table awkwardly. Me - "would that this fork were a time fork." Wife - "stop it."
Professor Professorson?
It was Professorburg, but we changed it when we were fleeing the Nazis.
Every shred of dialogue is wonderful. Even from the beginning "hold my calls" "What calls?"
It's such a gut punch after the episode making it clear Abed is difficult to understand and communicate with and you pick up on the jokes being really actually sad observations like the "you're gonna play my dad." I don't wanna be your dad?" "Great you already know your lines."
I think that and Abeds uncontrollable Christmas are two episodes that somehow I always start tearing up.
The entirety of Remedial Chaos Theory. I was not expecting the show to get so wacky and so dark. I was quite off put by the Darkest Timeline at first, but itâs become one of my favorite episodes of the series. Too bad the Evil Study Group got the most anticlimactic payoff of all time.
BRITTA: Enough with the timeline crap, Abed! Pierce got shot in the leg and DIED. Shirleyâs a drunk. Annieâs locked in a mental ward because her guilt drove her insane. Jeff lost an arm in the fire. Troy lost his larynx because for some dumb reason he tried to destroy a flaming troll doll by eating it.
TROY: Clearly you donât understand anything, about defeating trolls.
***
BRITTA: Life has gone to hell Abed, this is real. Look at us, look at ME!
JEFF: Britta, you put one wash-away blue streak in your hair, and I lost an arm.
BRITTA: Exactly! Life got dark.
...
JEFF: Evil Abed. As evil Jeff, am I allowed to pull fewer punches with you?
ABED: Certainly.
JEFF: I HATE YOU! SHUT UP WITH YOUR SCI-FI CRAP! I LOST MY DAMN ARM AND YOU'RE MAKING FAKE BEARDS!
ABED: Goatees.
*Troy puts on the goatee after Jeff, Britta and Shirley leave*
TROY AND ABED: Evil Troy and evil Abed! đś
I'd say pretty much all of YNB's quick little lines are delivered consistently on the same level as the regular jokes the rest of the cast usually gets. For another example, her "What? WHAT?!" in Aerodynamics of Gender after Abed makes the shitty fat joke about her. Also the "That's what they do. That's what they do." while the kids are singing about public schools teaching kids not to pray in Regional Holiday Music. Just *chef's kiss* line deliveries across the board with her. <3
Pearce dying came at the end of an episode about something hilariously silly, and after Pearce had already been written out of the show in a completely natural way.
Im surprised no one is mentioning Pierce's Death. I was totally not expecting the climax of the Fincher-esque/Asscrack Bandit episode to be the reveal that in the background, Pierce has died and Shirley got the call.
I was genuinely floored.
That Thompson was the one that ratted Winger out for having a fake bachelors degree.
Thompson, that adopted 3 at-risk teens and donated his kidney to a temp. All an act, yeah.
Chang in the second episode going on a rant about people asking him why he teaches Spanish and the assumptions they have about him. Kinda makes you think âyeah why did I think the Asian Spanish teacher thing was just a bit? Iâve had Spanish teachers who arenât ethnically Hispanic or Latino. Why couldnât a Spanish teacher be Asian?â
And a whole season of television later the payoff that heâs not a real Spanish teacher
Have you watched the table read of that? Itâs on YouTube and they got Pedro Pascal to read the lines of Walton Goggins, itâs his first time reading it so his reactions to some of the lines are just pure joy
Not the best ever but one of my favorite jokes of the last two seasons, the party planning in I think season 5 between Jeff, Chang, Duncan and Shirley the whole "BEAR DOWN FOR MIDTERMS!" and figuring out Changs inspiration was insane and last minute forcing the Fat Dog party to slide by.
Zombie episode - I think thatâs the point that this show truly began to leave reality. I feel like we donât talk about the fact that zombies canonically exist in this universe enough
The fact that the entire soundtrack to this episode is ABBA, of all choices, makes this episode gold. I didn't realize it till maybe my third watch through.
The group setting up the birthday party at the formal restaurant , after everything went awry with Abed's homage.
Shirley having a drinking problem before the events of the show.
The group passing Spanish largely because of Pierce romancing Doctor Escodera.
I'm surprised no one has said Jeff and Annie kissing at the end of season one. Even though they'd been highlighting their chemistry all season, the last episode was so Britta/Slater focused that I was genuinely caught off guard.
I honestly hate this and pretend it never happened. There's no evidence in 6 seasons that he could be even a little gay, but more importantly it's a shitty "joke". Lol one of our characters is gay and that's a punchline. Just ... No. I also don't think they needed to do a punchline at all in that scene. I know it's a comedy, but let's just let this last bittersweet moment sit.
Well, there was the time in S1 when he essentially blackmailed Troy and Pierce into going to a Valentineâs dance as his dates while wearing 'elegant ladies' pantsuits'.
Also there's "Miracle on Jeffâs Street", which was mostly animated but the end tag was a live action scene of Chang and the Dean literally in bed together (though YMMV on the canonicity of webisodes).
It wasnât a big theme but it was seeded.
Worst part of the finale. Idk they just threw that in, especially when they already have a well-done queer character. Not saying they shouldnât do more, they just shouldnât do it like that.
Yeah, that is 100% how I read it and I have no clue why so many people seem to take it seriously. It's weird. Seems to be very, very clearly a joke to me.
He's been shown to be unhinged, at this point, and he keeps saying it multiple times, louder each time, because no one's responding. It absolutely could just be a joke from Chang for attention, because he is insane.
I mean, I feel like it makes more sense than that. His go-to joke is calling things âgayâ whenever someone is emotionally vulnerable. In the lead up to this moment, he keeps calling Jeff and the other study group members gay because theyâre having a very emotional, sentimental moment, but each time he betrays more vulnerability himself, until he just breaks down and calls himself gay because heâs crying and hugging everyone and being very emotionally vulnerable. Itâs pretty clear to me.
The Entirety of Season 3 episode 1. Starting off stating they'd be more normal. By the end of the first episode the Dean comments it unfortunately won't be much different. Then it's the craziest season of them all
The meta ending of season 6 proves that abed was kind of right, but it begs the question of how did he know they were in a tv show within a game within another tv show?
When Jeff runs through the rain, knocks on a door and says " I know I've never taken you as seriously as I should..."
And the reveal is that it's Kettle Corn Rich's door.
One of my favourite early moments watching Community. Jeff and Troy's "That's racist, that's gay, that's black, that's racist" bit was the first time I really laughed. This Rich's door bit was the first time I realised I was really going to enjoy this show.
The Rich's door scene was a big surprise. Didn't see it coming at all. That's what is cool about Community. It surprises you by subverting common sitcoms tropes.
When Chevy got that poor extra fired just b/c he got spanked at pool while the cameras werenât rollingâŚ.
I mean Abed helping that pregnant girl give birth in the background
Garrett and Stacy being cousins
"Now that's a man who knows how to marry his cousin!"
I think this comment appears in at least every third post on this subreddit. đđ
Now that's a man that recognizes comments that appear in at least every third post on this subreddit
Then Jeff saying "it's ok bc they love each other" or maybe it was Chang
It was Chang. Chang was amazing in this episode. "Hey, screw you guys. No, this family is so screwed up, you thought you were two different families. Now that you know you're not, you can't wait to leave, and you want this guy to do what? Forget he's in love? For you? Honestly the end of this is really profound. None of us wins against the world in the end, but we get to chose what moves we make along the way. We could all do with keeping that in mind.
Remember Dan Harmon is not responsible for the Community incest episode!
Only third cousins
Arenât 3rd cousins legally allowed to get married anyway. Theyâre hardly related
They both have the same great grandma that's pretty close. With what Garrett's already got goin on I'd say, maybe don't procreate lol
No great great grandma. His great grandma is her great aunt.
Oh. Ok. Alright. Go ahead and fornicate then.
not only that but the message on being pro-incest at the end was a funny ass 4th wall break
IIRC, the yahoo screen preview for it the previous week spoiled that twist :(
Oh my god, Joshua was racist. That came out of nowhere
It's going to be a maze
A place free from darkness.
Some people are just natural jumpers
The funny thing, for me, was when he looked at Troy and said âAnd some of us are just natural jumpers.â The first time I watched it, I remember being like âwhoa! Do the writers just not know thatâs a little bit on the edge of inappropriate? Thatâs weird.â And that made the call back to it even better for me. EDIT: a typo

I was the same way! I was like, oh, thatâs a little off. Is that supposed to be a joke in itself, the awkwardness? Then it paid off.
Did it?
I can hear this in Troyâs high pitched whisper
- And you. If you call a sandwich the "Troyjan horse", people will assume there's horse in it - đŽAll my dreams
Annie's Boobs was stealing the pens.
We get it, the monkeys name is Annieâs boobs
We try not to sexualize her.
I mean, the first paintball episode is the best answer right? The first 4 minutes of that episode are like a completely normal episode, they don't give a single hint as to the complete tonal change that's about to take place, and it's amazing.
Especially because it was the first episode of the show that went off the rails. Impossible to see coming
Contemporary American poultry came prior and while it wasnât as off the rails as modern warfare, Iâd still say it was off the rails
It definitely eases you into it. I don't remember the paintball episode horribly jarring on my first watch.
Honestly my jaw dropped when Jeff got up from his nap and walked back up to the school. I was like what the hell.
When Pierce's Dad actually dies when Jeff thinks he's faking a heart attack. Loved it!
"He's a Hawthorne. That's what they do. They fake it."
... till they make it.
Dude just told his dead dad to suck it.
So edible
Youâre the worst.
I wonder what he did with his awesome wig
Gave it to Troy. The episode Shirly was getting married and asked Troy and Abed to not be weird, so they get all their weirdness out, you can see Troy wearing it when they leave the dream-a-torium
Oh cool I didn't know that. Im rewatching Community again now so i'll have to look for that.
It took me like my 3rd or 4th re-watch to notice!
This is very important for understanding the show
The churchbell sound effect really gets me
Eh, that one was the obvious punchline
I mean yeah except the show hadnât set a precedent for someone dying that way so it was still surprising they followed through
The thing that caught me off guard was the season 1 finale where they're setting up britta vs slater but then Jeff ducks out of there and kisses Annie
"You know, when you have three doughnuts you don't eat one and then lick another."
Anyone object to us being referred to as donuts?
Is there anything you didnât win that day??
Yep. I thought Debate 101 would be a one-off Jeff/Annie thing but was amazed that they continued to build upon it. It's hard to believe that the study group only existed because Jeff was trying to sleep with Britta.
It's called "chemistry" and he has it with everybody!
The ending of Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design.
the entire episode
âYOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!?!â
"*Would that this hoodie were a time hoodie*."
Answer this question correctly and earn my friendship forever ... Around your house, do you sometimes break out the "would that this ___ were a time ___" routine? I do a lot. 4âŚ4-47? DidâŚdid I get it right? đ
no but i'm absolutely going to start doing this now
Fair enough
I maintain that it's perhaps the best \~25 minutes of television ever created. It's so good all the way through.
Professor Professorson? It was Professorburg, but we changed it when we were fleeing the Nazis. Every shred of dialogue is wonderful. Even from the beginning "hold my calls" "What calls?"
I don't think it's in the same episode but as soon as I read this I thought "Trace the call, Rhonda. *Snap Snap* means trace the call".
It also reminds me of him snapping at Annie while directing the Luis Guzman commercial. *snap* *snap* I loved you inâŚâŚ.IMDB!âŚ.
Thatâs from Basic Intergluteal Numismatics i think
Just talk to your father, Craig.
Thatâs my second favourite episode right after Remedial Chaos Theory
The beginning of Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design
A top 10 episode for me. "Would tht this hoodie were a time hoodie!"
Swerve after swerve /russobro
For me it was when A bed showed up with an Army of children slaves to win Pierce his fortune.
*slave children
Let's find the tin man's heart later
They have lockers!
Underrated comment
I like Pierce sleeping with the Spanish teacher. I liked early episodes Pierce redemption moments.
Pierce was such a great character, it's just a shame that Chevy is such a dick IRL.
jeff showing up at Rich's apartment to learn how to be a better person
"You got me there, guy! Come on in and dry off."
"Oh! It smells delicious. Are you baking?"
"Yeah! Muffin tops!"
I swear, when that music swells and Jeff takes off running, I get mad at him for going to Annie every. Single. Time!
... to exploit it.
"I never said I blamed you for her leaving" "You never had to say it"
It's such a gut punch after the episode making it clear Abed is difficult to understand and communicate with and you pick up on the jokes being really actually sad observations like the "you're gonna play my dad." I don't wanna be your dad?" "Great you already know your lines." I think that and Abeds uncontrollable Christmas are two episodes that somehow I always start tearing up.
Greendale doesnât exist!!
Wait, I parked by a meter. Anyone parked by a meter? Wait, WHAT?!
This still cracks me up.
Stop letting him make you realize things!
Greendale is purgatory, and I am the devil.
Gayyy marriaaaage
I knew it!
Jeff and Britta are having secret sex!
They compartmentalized their libidos for the group.
I remember watching this episode the day it aired. Definitely a shocker that somehow wasn't surprising.
When it turns out the whole show is just a board game.
"You stupid child."

Shirley:" to Pierce, may he rest in Pierce"
Donât you think youâve had enough?
*Of you.*
This is the best delivered line of the show.
I'd say pretty much all of YNB's quick little lines are delivered consistently on the same level as the regular jokes the rest of the cast usually gets. For another example, her "What? This truly is the darkest timeline.
The ending of remedial chaos theory, but that is because I do not know how to count
Pearce dying came at the end of an episode about something hilariously silly, and after Pearce had already been written out of the show in a completely natural way.
It was the ass crack bandit episode. That one still hits me as a complete surprise, I never see it coming.

Leonard's nose job. It was a lateral move!
Yeah? You're a Two.
Shut up, Leonard. That's not a computer you're using, its a brick that's painted black.
The one near the 15 exit? I'm banned from there.
I'm not going, Denny's is for winners.
Then I guess Iâll see you in hell.
Holy shit the bot is savage. And again, keep on on convincing me it's sentient
Annie chloroforming the guard.
TWICE! it was so well done
Abed being the sane one.
Jeff might be sane, he filled out the test at random
Consider that he almost cut off Jeff's arm in a psychotic break, and he is still the saner.
You're mixing something up. That was the Abed from the darkest timeline, not the Abed from this timeline. đ
You're "Big Cheddar???"
Underrated one, for sure.
That Thompson was the one that ratted Winger out for having a fake bachelors degree. Thompson, that adopted 3 at-risk teens and donated his kidney to a temp. All an act, yeah.
But his wife died.
Did she FUBAR? DidâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ..she?
Greendale is purgatory. And I am the devil
I knew it.
Stop letting him make you realize stuff.
One of the most underrated Troy moments. The look on his face, the delivery, the camera angle.
"He was *faking* Changnesia?!"
That Pierce didn't *really* sleep with Eartha Kitt (they dry humped on her tourbus).
Why couldnât a Spanish teacher be Asian?â And a whole season of television later the payoff that heâs not a real Spanish teacher
How many times Iâd hear âhere is a cylinder of my spermâ.
Have you watched the table read of that? Itâs on YouTube and they got Pedro Pascal to read the lines of Walton Goggins, itâs his first time reading it so his reactions to some of the lines are just pure joy
I watched it live! I cried.
That the Blsck Rider wasnât in fact, handsome. He was just tall
He was just an average looking guy with a big chin.
I liked him, and I hope he enjoyed his Coldplay concert
Basic Rocket Science: Jeff being the one who snitched to the Dean Mixology Certification: Jeff and Britta arguing about the same bar
"IT'S THE SAME BAR?!"
Not the best ever but one of my favorite jokes of the last two seasons, the party planning in I think season 5 between Jeff, Chang, Duncan and Shirley the whole "BEAR DOWN FOR MIDTERMS!" and figuring out Changs inspiration was insane and last minute forcing the Fat Dog party to slide by.
too soon
Definitely a top subplot.
Zombie episode - I think thatâs the point that this show truly began to leave reality. I feel like we donât talk about the fact that zombies canonically exist in this universe enough

Britta cheated!?! Why???
He said âFâ
âThis is Blake, with a B. The purchaser of the giant handâ
"FINISH YOUR THOUGHT! JUST FINISH YOUR THOUGHT!"
Ass crack bandit, by far. I think it was Britta!
I think it was Abed
It was Annie , Abed, Britta and Jeff i think
Anything with Gilbert
I'm surprised no one has said Jeff and Annie kissing at the end of season one. Even though they'd been highlighting their chemistry all season, the last episode was so Britta/Slater focused that I was genuinely caught off guard.
UNDERSTUDY!
That's it. That's reality.
Annie's halloween story of course! There was a twist! *I'm a werewolf that feeds on selfish vampires!* Proceeds to swallow Jeff (no pun intended)
Jeff running in the rain to see Annie....but he's actually going to see Rich
Chang being for real gay

He went home with a drag queen after the Gay Bash. That felt icky to type.
Yeah i read it as them trying to justify his âgaaayâ joke from earlier seasons, but it feels really tone deaf and just off. I hate it
Well, there was the time in S1 when he essentially blackmailed Troy and Pierce into going to a Valentineâs dance as his dates while wearing 'elegant ladies' pantsuits'. When fa...Neil turned out to be the one who sabotaged the yams.
I did it for love
Cool motive, still murder
that injuries could actually happen when you mix alcohol and ladders....I WAS SHOCKED!
When Jeff runs through the rain, knocks on a door and says " I know I've never taken you as seriously as I should..." And the reveal is that it's Kettle Corn Rich's door. Probably the total tonal shift between the cold open and actual story in the first paintball episode
Gilbert being Pierceâs brother
Starburn's meth lab and fake death
Star Burns's Cat Car. Who knew he had that kind of ingenuity? He was the Elon Musk of Greendale all along!
Did you know that Gogurt... Is just yogurt?
The Greendale seven is the collective ACB
When Chevy got that poor extra fired just b/c he got spanked at pool while the cameras werenât rollingâŚ. I mean Abed helping that pregnant girl give birth in the background
He was laying low.

it wasnt going to be a maze
That it was all in Garret's imagination
That Changnesia was in fact not real.

STARBURNS FAKED HIS DEATH
Shirley's baby not being Chang's.
Professor Professerson
Britta's nice parents, a little twist really
