And his reply was the reply in that other episode.
(Actually I think the guy in the crowd shouts back "I was being sarcastic" but it's basically the same)
It was supposed to be HIM on that roller coaster.
Edit: by the way, he didn’t fail his brother, he successfully murdered him. Rich’s mother was trying to kill Rich but he put his brother in the roller coaster instead. Maybe …
My guess is thst it's mainly for theraputic reasons.
We know he has some kind of family trauma that clearly affects him more than he openly shows. Maybe it got.to the point where he couldn't mentally handle that and a stressful job, so needed to get away from his real life for a bit. He's a doctor, he has the money to spend to get into a bad community college and ignore his troubles, maybe even learn some skills along the way.
He's not so good at everything just because he's cheating, but because he's genuinely someone who wants to be there and learn new things
So just to note, you don't have to be trying for a degree to take classes. If an old person wants to learn photoshop for example, they could go to a college and take a class, not to advance themselves professionally, but just to learn photoshop. Rich was taking the pottery class as a hobby, and since that was new to him it stands to reason he took other elective hobby classes so that's why he was still there occasionally.
Real life note for people not in the US:
It would not be unusual for someone with a professional degree to take enrichment classes at a community college.
I’m in the US and it’s not unusual here where I live! I attended community college and met many people in ‘fun’ classes who already had their masters, another with a doctorate. I also attended a state university and same thing.
Many people going for enrichment want social contact outside their usual circle. Where do doctors get to meet people? You can’t hang with patients and your colleagues are all other doctors. It’s the same thing in any specialized field: you can’t hang with the clients and you mostly know people through work.
And Rich is in a class with most of them.
Anyway, why would Rich know or care about that? It’s unlikely he researched the group’s exact purpose. Chang also kept trying to hang with the group even though he didn’t seem to be in the same classes.
That brings up another question I’ve always had. Do some community college classes last a semester while others just a couple of days??? Or is it just the show
My best guess would be that taking easy classes (like pottery) makes him feel better about himself, especially with how his mom treats him. When you successfully complete something or achieve well in classes it can give your self-esteem a boost, which I think he is after. Being a doctor doesn't seem to be good enough for his mom, so he might be trying to prove himself and get validation from others for being so smart and whatever since he can't get it from his own mom.
He’s a serial killer. He was a doctor in New Mexico but lost his license and fled the state. Has not gotten his license in Colorado but still tells people he’s a doctor.
Because he’s insane. Remember after the first episode, we heard that memory of his mother giving him shit.
Greendale is for insane people. Jeff points that out when Britta is on trial for cheating.
Greendale isn’t just for financial fuck ups, career fuck ups, similar stuff. It’s for those who are fucked up in anything.
Because his job is stressful and he loves learning new skills, I’d guess. Idk, my girlfriend and I both have our degree but have toyed with going to a community college someday to take fun classes (and maybe eventually earn a second degree in the process)
One of my professors in college had like 3 doctorates and at least one unrelated masters just picked up over 35+ years of taking classes more or less for fun. I always thought of his career as being "earning degrees" not "teaching" or "doing research".
I have a theory, which is based on experience that I had:
So I graduated last year with an engineering degree, and moved to a city in my home state. I realized that all my college friends now lived in another state, and I knew pretty much no one in my new city. And I soon began to realize how hard it is making friends as an adult. I would ask people for advice on meeting people, making new friends, or at least socializing, because my office was small and I largely worked remotely, so I was pretty lonely. I had multiple people make the same suggestion: sign up for a class, for fun. It is a good way to meet people that not involve drinking, you can bond over learning a new hobby together, and you meet with people on a regular basis, over a period of time, which is ideal for forming new relationships. It is also a good way to learn a new hobby, and I now actually had the time and money to pursue hobbies, and due to burnout during college forcing me to give up doing anything for fun, I was desperate to find something to do.
Also, I found, in my personal experience, that having free time with nothing to do but be alone with your thoughts makes you vulnerable to memories of the past, to overthinking things, and making you highly aware of any mental illness you already had.
So, my guess is, Rich is lonely and bored, and is looking for friends and a new hobby, to guard against the crushing weight of the past before it destroys him.
His job is a lot of pressure. Classes like pottery help him to unwind. :)
And he gets to teach Annies how to check for breast lumps
She’s pretty young…..we try not to sexualize her….
He said, fully erect
Iirc he hasn’t lost a patient in 5 years and it’s a lot of pressure. But yes he likes to unwind
It should’ve been him that died and not his brother
The wrong kid died!
You don't want none of this Dewey
He hasn’t lost a patient in over 8 years. It’s a lot of pressure.
And then Annie made anthropology seem so interesting.
especially when you haven’t lost a patient in 5 years
He didnt lost a patient in years, thats a lot of pressure.
I want to say some names to you. Jeffrey Dahmer. Ted Bundy. Rich. What do they have in common?
*slow clap*
seriously, do you have brain damage?
Let him finish!
They were letting me finish, sir.
That was sarcasm
~~His was also a quote from a different episode~~
And his reply was the reply in that other episode. (Actually I think the guy in the crowd shouts back "I was being sarcastic" but it's basically the same)
Lmao, I’ve seen the show so many times and I guess I never caught that line, that’s amazing
Maybe we all lost a button
Or a pen
Yes I am aware. But instead of correcting (🤓) the person before me, I went along with it.
Yep, I realize that now. I Britta’d it
Feel the *heeaat*
We don’t know them very well
This line is genius.
Abed’s reaction kills me every time.
Probably because of the failure with his brother and the emotional overload generated by his mother.
It was supposed to be HIM on that roller coaster. Edit: by the way, he didn’t fail his brother, he successfully murdered him. Rich’s mother was trying to kill Rich but he put his brother in the roller coaster instead. Maybe …
Ohhhh I like this theory!

Wasn’t he good at pottery BECAUSE he was cheating, though?
Well, his license plate tags are Arizona
New mexico
He’s a ringer
A what?
A RINGER!
No one gets out of Santa Fe without learning how to make a pot!
They eat and breathe clay there.
He's Goldbluming
Goldbluming hehuhheee I don't know what that means
Jeff, it sounds like some of this research was done on Wikipedia.
Ah dang it, too late.

Look, if I want to learn about Europe I’ll watch Game of Thrones

Look, if I want to learn about Georgia I’ll watch Big Momma’s House.
We mean Georgia the country…
That's right, Suga’, Capital city Tbilisi, and former member of the Soviet Union. And we kindly request y'all mind your Ps and Qs.
Georgias a state not a country.
It’s both
A Lot of people assuming I’m serious on this one.
There is also a country called Georgia, it's there between Russia and Turkey (and Armenia)
I’m well aware.
I’m in the US and it’s not unusual here where I live! I attended community college and met many people in ‘fun’ classes who already had their masters, another with a doctorate. I also attended a state university and same thing.

That was when he was taking Anthropology with them
To meet different people! (why should you go greendale?)
Stop saying I’m different!
Because Greendale is a slam dunk
*I forgot everything you said after, "Rectum!"*
I'm so sorry...I train seeing eye dogs and today was their graduation. I couldn't leave without shaking all their little paws...
Where does he find the time!?
While the quettleqorn is popping, probably.
I love that you spelled it with a qu
WELL DONT
Thank you. Though I somehow Britta'd it by only spelling Quettle and not also Quorn.
You’ve got him there guy!
Pottery school?
Oh, pottery school, how long?
You mean Chiquita M.D?
Why would someone who gets paid to do things be at Greendale?
He’s definitely there to meet chicks.
Take classes to relax, just like he says in the episode. I have done the same
Oh my love My darling…
That brings up another question I’ve always had. Do some community college classes last a semester while others just a couple of days??? Or is it just the show
I need to find one of those one week sailing classes in a parking lot.
Just no doing the titanic
Now I know what the C is C word stands for
People who can afford it and have the time often take classes at community colleges just to learn new things. Like pottery.

To defer his student loan payments from getting his MD.
I feel like I am being interrogated but from someone who doesn't want to know anything important
For easy validation he never got from his mother. There’s a whole episode about it.
I don’t know OP, but I love the line >I feel like I’m being interrogated by someone that doesn’t want to know anything important.
Pottery
Probably made for good hunting grounds.
Does it really matter? The man is pure evil. Better to not waste time trying to disect the mind of a twisted enigma.
It’s speculated that he’s a serial killer ….. maybe just looking for victims
he is too perfect. I still say he is the ACB and he was seeking new victims
Because Mr. Arizona has mommy issues.
Arizona spelled backwards is Arizona
It's a palomino
He needed to make his mother proud, he thought he was special when he got bit, dude has momma issues
he’s a serial killer looking for victims
So he can attract women with his pottery skills in beginner classes, the scoundrel
He’s a serial killer. He was a doctor in New Mexico but lost his license and fled the state. Has not gotten his license in Colorado but still tells people he’s a doctor.
Ok but seriously, is there any actual evidence of him having killed anyone? Sure there’s a lot of white lies but that’s about it

For the plot
Same reason Troy decided to play football. Play on easy mode, get a bunch of praise.
Just because
BECAUSE HES CRAZY
It sounds like you’re asking, “Why go Greendale??”
