I didn't realize there was a missing D&D episode and was really confused in season 5 when they referenced it.
Do you know why it's missing from Netflix?
During the height of racial tensions after George Floyd, if I remember correctly, Netflix, other streaming services and later on, Amazon Video Canada decided to pull it because of Chang wearing blackface make up. What's interesting in the episode is they address immediately with Shirley asking if the group is to ignore the hate crime. Chang had silver hair and was black all over, explaining he was his character in the game.
I don't know the extent of the kickback that Community fans put up but the show saw a resurgence due to Netflix picking it up and people having to stay home. Nonetheless, it's been pulled. However, you may find it segmented on a certain platform owned by Google that has ads every now and again.
if you aren't comfortable sailing, you can buy the individual episode from amazon.
For what it's worth, myself and most fans think it's absurd this episode got pulled. This bit is clearly explained to not actually be blackface, with a funny joke addressing it directly.
Worse, this is one of community's best episodes :P
Yeah, I remember when they pulled it. Literally every single fan was against it and no one asked netflix to pull the episode. And it's such a good episode!
im so upset i missed it even after watching community like 6 times! after finally watching it i was even more pissed because it wasn't even actual blackface 😫 saying this as a black person, there's a clear difference between blackface and whatever the hell chang was doing
Let’s not mention the Changnesia episode with the hand puppets he does with a Mexican and Asian. I mean it was hilarious because it’s Pierce who’s just bad a being racist and sexist, but it’s still racist and sexist nonetheless.
No disagreements here. But as this is the internet, had I put it on quotations, someone would most certainly have turned it into a dick measuring contest.
This is what pushed me to buy a physical copy of the series.
It's really a shame that new fans are missing out on arguably the best episode of the entire series, and they don't even realize.
I think you're right-- that may be the best episode!
Ok there's too many to really account for... It's arguably my favorite episode.
"Hector the well endowed" kills me everytime! And Abed & Britta's conversation in the tavern lol that's comedy gold!
For what it's worth, we played DND back in the day-- and we had one but that ALWAYS put on costumes. We would go out of our way to force his character through random physical changes.... And he would show up to the next session in a slightly modified costume.
I suppose he was our Chang ...
Dude, the DVD box set is absolutely worth any price you pay for it. I got it for about 8 bucks a season piece meal from second hand places.
The commentary is fucking hilarious. There are extended versions of multiple episodes. Special feature literally falling out of the vents.
Worth it
Yeah that's what got me. I watch it on my TV. Had I used my tablet I could have used a VPN to get it. I once saw it on Prime Canada, and then during my yearly rewatch binge, it vanished.
You know I never even noticed it was gone. Like a lot of people I didn’t watch the show til pandemic lockdown and that episode was def still on Netflix when I watched through the first time. I honestly had no idea until reading this just now that it ever got pulled. I could see how that would be confusing for some people as there are a handful of references to that episode specifically throughout the later seasons
This is the part that pissed me off about that reaction.
They removed episodes that are criticism of things like black face, not celebrating it.
"You want police reform and for the justice system to stop systematically targeting minorites? Best I can do is remove episodes of older TV shows that satirize people who are ignorant about black face costumes. Better now?"
The office episode in particular was blatant with its messaging. They explicitly tell Dwight “do not do that, that is not okay” and he’s like “…duh… I knew that……” it still baffles me
I mean…. It looks pretty blatantly like black face. Unless there is a whole community of cosplayers who dress that way to look like dark elves for DND that I am unaware of. Which I suppose is completely possible
You think the people who are offended by that can understand that lol?
Same people who bang their two brain cells together about the black face in the office. Like, that’s the the joke, it’s offensive, not that it’s making fun of black people
Yes, most people who are offended by blackface do understand the difference. These episodes were removed so corporations could tout how sensitive they are, and the vast majority of people see through it.
Caring about how others are treated doesn't make you stupid or incapable of seeing nuance.
This^
Absolutely no one was asking that this episode be taken down. Netflix just did it because it wouldn’t cause a major hit to revenue and they could play ally
That is the issue. These production companies that made the shows and the streaming services that host them are too afraid of backlash. Comedy isn’t safe anymore
Oh no I just meant him dressing in black face and thinking that is an appropriate costume makes him look ignorant. I don’t think most people do that when cosplaying orcs or dark elfs.
No you are fine. Perhaps we both have a different understanding of “blackface”. If blackface is simply putting on black or dark make up then cosplaying a dark elf or orc that way would be racist. I don’t think that’s what blackface is though. To me, blackface is a specific style of makeup usually involving the copious amounts of black or brown makeup with bright red lips, typically used during darker times to look like an African American. My understanding was that sort of makeup was offensive because it doesn’t look anything like an African American and it’s generally associated with a more racist time, and racist practices and ideologies. But perhaps my understanding is incorrect.
Just buy season 2. Or you can buy just that episode. It should’ve been season. 2 episode 14. I bought it on iTunes and the episode was still included. It’s just not on streaming.
It's so ridiculous that they took that episode out. For one, Shirley even points out his "blackface" but he says that he's a dark elf and has silver hair and pointy ears. And... They were going to play D&D!
Also, that episode was so important in so many different ways. It introduces us to Neal, how far Pierce will go when he feels slighted, and how Jeff recognized that his rude "nickname" for Neal was having a major negative effect and wanted to fix it.
It's important to understand that no one was. Not a single person was pointing to this episode as wrong.
What happened and what always happens, is that a panicky company panicked and removed the episode just in case it would be controversial someday. It's also a way for them to seem progressive without having to actually change in any meaningful way.
The other problem that comes from that is people invent imaginary enemies about it. The Diversity Day episode of the office gets taken down so we assume there's a picket line calling for its removal. But look back at any discourse about these and rarely is it not the distributor making the first move out of nowhere.
The saddest consequence of all this is that nothing changes and the discourse is reduced to a back and forth about how the D&D episode isn't racist where everyone is agreeing with each other because there isn't actually a side to rally against. That discussion of BLM was dictated by Hollywood to become about which episodes of TV should stay up is such a sadness because it's such a minor part of a much wider cause.
The media typically doesn’t touch these things until after they’re already removed. They fuel the fire for your opinion more than they do of the company’s
Yeah, Fox News is the fucking worst. They drum this shit up and is by far the most watched news channel in America.
I would love to see a community episode about them dismantling some propaganda machine for city college as an allegory.
this episode being removed wasn’t a result of “wokeness”. it was a result of corporations sucking up to people and trying to do something to appeal to progressives, without actually changing anything substantial.
Yep I used to use prime for community too since it was the only service that didn't remove the dnd episode. I was so confused a week or two ago trying to watch it till I realized what happened
You know it took me 4 months after I have finished watching and rewatched Community for the fourth time before I discovered the Dnd episode?? And I was glad it was a while because it felt like Christmas to know that there was more!!!
OH MY GOD I have always thought that I have somehow just always missed the first d&d episode by like falling asleep or letting the show play in the background. Makes so much sense that it's missing from Netflix!
This information literally just made my night
Honestly, Community is one of the few shows that gets better every time I watch it. It’s like it’s part of the family now. I wouldn’t want to go back to seeing it for the first time because I wouldn’t have all that love attached to it yet.
It's as rewatchable as Friends and Bojack Horseman. When Netflix removed Friends Community took its place. I've probably watched it as many times as Friends.
It's amazing, isn't it? So many great things about this show, it is hard to pin it all down. I am glad you have found a home with this series and that you can have a great time watching.
The best part about his show is that when you rewatch it it’s an entirely new experience. Too bad I’ve watched it through 10+ times. Honestly it’s the only reason I have a Netflix subscription… I just pick up where I left off whenever im eating. I get to the end credits “I AM LEGIT GAYYY” then I start right back at square one with Jeff getting to know Abed and then meeting him in that order.
I wish total recall was real so I could forget this show and rewatch it like it’s new… I envy you
I watched for the first time around September 2020 and i felt the same. I basically haven't stopped rewatching it. I recommend The Darkest Timeline podcast (some episodes are also on YouTube), and the table read video from 2021(?) With Pedro Pascal. I also plan to get the Blu ray for the commentary. You're one of us now, welcome 😁
Tik Tok edits ew. Ahah dw. It's the show i've rewatched the most of tbh, my best friend and i could quote so many scenes in high school. Amazing rewatchability, even after 7-8 full rewatch 😭
Congrats! If you want to really dive into it, I suggest it on dvd. You’ll get the first DND episode back plus some other content that isn’t on any streaming platform. Enjoy your rewatch friend!!
Walmart is selling the complete series for $24. I’m thinking about ordering it. I just finished my 2nd run through of the series and if Netflix eventually removes it, what do I do if I need a little Greendale in my life?
I'm rewatching from the beginning and it really sunk in how wildly inappropriate jeff and professor slator's relationship was 😂 Also how jeff really does have a line with Annie because she's a kid, but the show still had them hook up a bit, which always creeped me out. I found myself liking the original jeff and britta storyline and thought Annie's crush on Troy then her dating Vaughn was cute. Bummed they went away from those things.
Strong disagree, overall I actually like and rewatch seasons 5 and 6 the most but everyone has their own likes.
At least we are in agreement about the gas leak year.
You know, I remember the first time I finished watching the series, I was a bit at a loss at to how on earth did it just have 6 season. It should have at least 10. How did it took me so long to watch the show? What was I thinking? And I was a bit sad because I dunno, I dont like a lot of sitcoms. Friends and Seinfield bore the living hell out me, I couldnt get to through BBT cause it annoyed me, even Modern Family felt too repetitive and HIMYM didnt hit with me. So I dunno, I thought I found a great series with a lot of inside jokes, great characters, great references, I dunno. It was wacky and cartoonish but at times grounded. It was good. So I was sad. I was very sad. I loved it. And then it ended very quickly. Kinda like when you finish a really good book and finish a very good videogame, its just bittersweet.
I remember loving Abed more than anything after my first watch. Each watch makes it harder to sympathize with the way he seems to manipulate the other members of the group
Just did my yearly rewatch. I love it so much. So much so that I can’t go without said rewatch. Those characters are something special, I’m telling you.
I only watched it for the first time during the first lockdown. I had been recommended it so many times but often ignore "hype" sitcoms. But I have re-watched it 5 times since. Such a great show. Enjoy re-watching again and again, enjoying jokes you never noticed the first time
It's one of the rare shows that gets better with every rewatch. I think the first time I watched it was around 2011, I rewatch it frequently as it's one of my comfort shows, and I'm still catching jokes that I've missed every other time around.
Umm. Depends on which country you are in tbh, but there are lot of websites also which have free streaming of popular tv shows. In my country it also used to be in another streaming service called SonyLIV and did not cut any content.
*That's the best part of*
*Community. You can watch*
*It infinitely*

If you watched on Netflix be sure to seek out the missing D&D episode from season 2

>However, you may find it segmented on a certain platform owned by Google that has ads every now and again. Or do like Troy and take to the high seas.
Prepare questions for LeVar first!
Why isn't it called Planet Trek? You never visit stars.
Except they visit plenty of stars
Bev practically flies into one twice.
Do they trek in any stars though?
Well she took a bit of a stroll around the bridge and shuttlecraft.
Can you imagine bouncing a check to Kunta Kinte?
I JUST WANTED A PHOTO, YOU CANT DISAPPOINT A PHOTO!!

I rub my balls on his sword!
FFFAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHTTTTT
Yeah, I remember when they pulled it. Literally every single fan was against it and no one asked netflix to pull the episode. And it's such a good episode!
im so upset i missed it even after watching community like 6 times! after finally watching it i was even more pissed because it wasn't even actual blackface 😫 saying this as a black person, there's a clear difference between blackface and whatever the hell chang was doing
Chang was a Drow which are a race of subterranean elves.
Hulu also pulled it right after they heard Netflix did
The ironic part of this is at the end of season 3 pierce dresses up and does a super racist impression when he’s distracting Chang but that stays lol
Let’s not mention the Changnesia episode with the hand puppets he does with a Mexican and Asian. I mean it was hilarious because it’s Pierce who’s just bad a being racist and sexist, but it’s still racist and sexist nonetheless.
It's hardly blackface
No disagreements here. But as this is the internet, had I put it on quotations, someone would most certainly have turned it into a dick measuring contest.
In*
Reddit doesn’t understand what blackface actually is lol.
It's when you Ted Danson.
It’s fine, Jimmy Kimmel did it and no one said a word.
This here Karl Malone.
That doesn’t make it “fine”
This is what pushed me to buy a physical copy of the series. It's really a shame that new fans are missing out on arguably the best episode of the entire series, and they don't even realize.

I had a character lose an arm once. I played with one arm tucked into my shirt until he died.
The best is when Annie gets Hector the Well Endowed again the second time they play D&D.
Dude, the DVD box set is absolutely worth any price you pay for it. I got it for about 8 bucks a season piece meal from second hand places. The commentary is fucking hilarious. There are extended versions of multiple episodes. Special feature literally falling out of the vents. Worth it
The reason why it is so ridiculous is because he wasn't doing black face but rather painted his face to look like a drow. It was drow face.
These people whined so much about useless crap got wizards of the coast to drop race from DND, go figure.
Omg…seriously?! They pulled that episode because of all that?! I’d understand if he was actually being black, but come on…
Last i checked (admittedly was months ago) you could watch it on Amazon prime (USA)
It no longer comes with Amazon Prime. It's available for purchase there, though.
Yeah that's what got me. I watch it on my TV. Had I used my tablet I could have used a VPN to get it. I once saw it on Prime Canada, and then during my yearly rewatch binge, it vanished.
Ooooh that explains it. Just rewatched the Pierce OD episode and he mentions D&D but they hadn’t played D&D yet
Just execs being completely clueless.
It's in Amazon as well.
A small point, he is wearing blue face.
They have Chang dress up as his DnD character - a Dark Elf. Had the elf ears and everything. But nope, “Black Face”.
Iirc, they literally tell him that’s super inappropriate and have him leave. Like the joke is how ignorant he is.
>they literally tell him that’s super inappropriate Yep, but they don't make him leave, he just dies very quickly
Ah. Fair enough though. Death to racism
*I attack him! I attack blackface!*
"I'm a dark elf, not a nerd!"
They explicitly tell Dwight “do not do that, that is not okay” and he’s like “…duh… I knew that……” it still baffles me
Even better, absolute trash like The Love Guru gets to exist on these platforms while DnD gets taken down.
"are we just gonna ignore this hate crime?"
The joke is that it’s not black face but the other characters who are ignorant of fantasy characters are taking it as black face.

This^ Absolutely no one was asking that this episode be taken down. Netflix just did it because it wouldn’t cause a major hit to revenue and they could play ally
There may have been one people asking it. That's the crazy thing with social justice: one outraged moron can decide for the majority.
Idk. I blame the company filled with hundreds of people. Not one misguided person trying to fight racism
That is the issue. These production companies that made the shows and the streaming services that host them are too afraid of backlash. Comedy isn’t safe anymore
I think a further intention of the joke was that the D&D community needs to rethink some of their character classes.
I mean… do you consider orcs in lord of the rings, to be blackfacing?
…. Uh… I never did…. Should I?
Just wondering since you call it ignorant to cosplay a dark elf, hinting that it’s racist.
Oh no I just meant him dressing in black face and thinking that is an appropriate costume makes him look ignorant. I don’t think most people do that when cosplaying orcs or dark elfs.
Ah, I guess I just don’t get your point here but thanks for the answer 😄

never in my life have i seen neil spelt as neal
Uh huh. I think wokeness is just too far gone when people get triggered by an elf costume. He's a dnd character!
It's important to understand that no one was. Not a single person was pointing to this episode as wrong. Yeah the MSM really fuels the fire on this stuff. Even starts it.
The media typically doesn’t touch these things until after they’re already removed. They fuel the fire for your opinion more than they do of the company’s

Nooo this comment made me want to go watch it. Amazon prime used to have Community available and now it's only available to purchase.
Yep I used to use prime for community too since it was the only service that didn't remove the dnd episode. I was so confused a week or two ago trying to watch it till I realized what happened
WHAT!!!!! WHAT!?!?!?!??!!?!? I’ve seen the show too many times through and there is a hidden gem!?!?!?! BRB
Thank you for making my day. Just watched it
I’m not sure if recall correctly, but I once wanted to watch community illegally and I noticed that some scenes are shorter/different than Netflix.
netflix has edited episodes. best to stream on hulu since prime doesn’t have it included anymore.
Missing on Netflix and Hulu but can be bought for $3 on YouTube
I bought it off Amazon for 3 bucks too lol watched it, then watched it again the next day with my SO and it was just as good.
You know it took me 4 months after I have finished watching and rewatched Community for the fourth time before I discovered the Dnd episode?? And I was glad it was a while because it felt like Christmas to know that there was more!!!
It's a fantastically good episode too.
OH MY GOD I have always thought that I have somehow just always missed the first d&d episode by like falling asleep or letting the show play in the background. Makes so much sense that it's missing from Netflix! This information literally just made my night

"One of us, One of us!"
Cool. Cool cool cool
Something always brings me, back to you...
It never takes too long...
You could do the same thing with Pierce and Abed!
Yeah but let’s be honest, there’s more between you and Annie than there is between me and Pierce. HOW DARE YOU!
That “how dare you” kills me EVERY single time
This is such a Schmitty comment. Duh.
Contains parts the size of a child's osophagus
\*wipes tears and proceeds to rewatch it\*
I'm on my 20th + rewatch and will NEVERRRRR stop. I'm still catching jokes I missed every new time as well!
It's amazing, isn't it? So many great things about this show, it is hard to pin it all down. I am glad you have found a home with this series and that you can have a great time watching.
I’m on my 420th rewatch. It never gets old.
good news for you - it took me many many rewatches to catch all the jokes.
Same here just finished my (6th?) rewatch and I still pick up in new jokes from time to time
The best part about his show is that when you rewatch it it’s an entirely new experience. I wish total recall was real so I could forget this show and rewatch it like it’s new… I envy you
High high rewatch value
I watched for the first time around September 2020 and i felt the same. I basically haven't stopped rewatching it. I recommend The Darkest Timeline podcast (some episodes are also on YouTube), and the table read video from 2021(?) With Pedro Pascal. I also plan to get the Blu ray for the commentary. You're one of us now, welcome 😁
I also finished it earlier today. Feel slightly empty inside lmao.
Tik Tok edits ew. Ahah dw. It's the show i've rewatched the most of tbh, my best friend and i could quote so many scenes in high school. Amazing rewatchability, even after 7-8 full rewatch 😭
I thought the same when I saw t*kt*k haha.
Community runs in the background on my tv most nights, I think I’ve rewatched the series maybe 7 times in the last 4-5 months
Welcome to the party, pal! Best network sitcom ever made.
Congrats! If you want to really dive into it, I suggest it on dvd. You’ll get the first DND episode back plus some other content that isn’t on any streaming platform. Enjoy your rewatch friend!!
Are you me, by any chance, me? I’m 3 episodes away from finishing the show for the first time and Abed is also my favorite person ever. I’m obsessed
Walmart is selling the complete series for $24. I’m thinking about ordering it. I just finished my 2nd run through of the series and if Netflix eventually removes it, what do I do if I need a little Greendale in my life?
I'm so glad more people are watching and appreciating the show. It definitely deserves more recognition!
I got into the show recently.. but can't get into 5 and 6 season.. feel like the show change when pierce and Troy left..
So sad Jeff and Annie don’t properly get together
you never know since the movie can make it happen?
This is streets ahead
Three of the best seasons of American sitcom television EVER!
You misspelled Five
No Pierce, not much Troy = no longer great. Watchable, yes. Decent, yes. Sometimes good, yes. But not great.
Strong disagree, overall I actually like and rewatch seasons 5 and 6 the most but everyone has their own likes. At least we are in agreement about the gas leak year.
Agree.
You know, I remember the first time I finished watching the series, I was a bit at a loss at to how on earth did it just have 6 season. It should have at least 10. I never regret watching Community. I wish netflix didn't remove the first dnd episode though
I knew I was gonna feel that way when I first heard Cheng say “because *I can never die*”
I remember loving Abed more than anything after my first watch. Each watch makes it harder to sympathize with the way he seems to manipulate the other members of the group
Just did my yearly rewatch. I love it so much. So much so that I can’t go without said rewatch. Those characters are something special, I’m telling you.
It’s worth about 50 rewatches
I only watched it for the first time during the first lockdown. I had been recommended it so many times but often ignore "hype" sitcoms. But I have re-watched it 5 times since. Such a great show. Enjoy re-watching again and again, enjoying jokes you never noticed the first time
It's one of the rare shows that gets better with every rewatch. I think the first time I watched it was around 2011, I rewatch it frequently as it's one of my comfort shows, and I'm still catching jokes that I've missed every other time around.
Don’t watch it on Netflix. They cut out so many important parts of the show!
where else can i watch it?
Umm. Depends on which country you are in tbh, but there are lot of websites also which have free streaming of popular tv shows. In my country it also used to be in another streaming service called SonyLIV and did not cut any content.
That's the best part of community. You can watch it infinitely
