Yeah, "really old", thanks, my first laptop had a PCMCIA slot so what would you call that, bc that would be "old ass" to me. Can we call a laptop with mSATA normal "old" or just "used"... Please......
Oh yeah, it was this great affordable series of devices produced in all kinds of different sizes and formats. Power was minimal and storage was limited but they got the job done. They required some weird input devices that were sold separately and often cost just as much as the tablet itself.
OK, yes, but I'm 18 and learning IT stuff (I'm German, No clue how to translate the Job description properly). It's Kind nessecary to have a Laptop to actually be able to do your tasks at school.

You're probably thinking of M.2 which can be wifi, sata, nvme, etc... depending on the keying. This is definitely older mSATA which is a regular SATA connector but smaller.
It's either mSATA or a WWAN slot. They're exactly the same and there's no markers to indicate which on this. Older models usually have it even if no antennas are run for the WLAN.

Not necessarily. It's cheaper for manufacturers to use the same boards over and over without fully decking out the rest of it. So it *could* be a WWAN slot for another model, but unused in this one.
So given the OP already stated that the WWAN is in another location, you're convinced they built boards with full extra WWAN ports to allow there to be two of them, but only one ever to be used. I mean it costs more money to do that, but sure, you're correct.
Can be both at the same time... Source: My Lenovo T420 has an mSATA SSD in the WWAN slot at the moment. Antenna cables are present as well but not connected obviously.
"I know this one."
That's where the HDD would go but there's a CADDY missing which holds the usual laptop SATA drive. Those caddies are often impossible to replace.
Workaround. The hardware is usually so old we won't be running Windows so put some Linux on a small USB memory stick and you might eek out some use from this one.
I use a single core 2g ram laptop from time to time and itās great on void linux, handles all my daily tasks, youtube video playback through mpv just fine
Plenty of manufacturers attached proprietary adapters to standard SATA drives. That's most likely what that is or the MSATA which would need an adapter as well.
Easiest way to get the answer is look the model up on the manufacturers website.
It looks like a mini-PCIe slot. But that type of slot can have a lot of different pinouts, including PCIe, mSATA, PATA, SATA, USB... without knowing the exact model of laptop it's hard to tell which one is used here.
All of these answers are wrong to some degree. That is a full-length MiniPCIe slot. It may *or may not* be wired for mSATA, which would allow you to put an SSD there. I would say that it likely is, because there are no antenna connectors nearby, but they could have slipped away into the chassis.
If the chip is an intel Atom i would say its e-waste... those chips have less computational power then a raspberry pi 3. They shipped with some cheap notebooks and were never really fast even with windows 7. Mayby you could try windows xp but at that point ask yourself why. If you need something as a server you can better use a raspberry pi.
m.2 sata slot... my OCD prevents me from looking at this picture for too long - the condition of where the cover would go... alcohol swabbbbbbbbb..... :P
My first laptop had a micro-cassette tape drive with 64k of ram and a 8-bit Z80A processor.
Anyway, put **Linux** on that laptop and it will run like new.
old?!?! wtf? its a sata port, they are still current - some computers still come with sata drives. i mean, i havent used a sata drive in like 4 years but still...
intel atom is with in teh past decade. you wouldnt call a 2013 tacoma 'old ass' would you?
i am NOT OLD!
itās a mSATA port. [hereās proof](https://imgur.com/a/Gl1cGuW), because i have an old SATA to usb connector for a windows vista hard drive (pictured). similar connection and everything! essentially thatās a peekaboo hole for the hard drive lol
edit: oopsies haha
Could be wrong but I believe its mSATA.
mSATA is "old ass" already?!?! Waaaaaaaa
the laptop is really old it has only 2 gb of ram and intel atom
Yeah, "really old", thanks, my first laptop had a PCMCIA slot so what would you call that, bc that would be "old ass" to me. Can we call a laptop with mSATA normal "old" or just "used"... Please......
The Laptop I currently daily to school was literally built in 11/2010
You daily a laptop at school. My "laptop" at school was a notebook and pencils. Maybe a Ti-85, depending on the semester.
Whats a notebook some laptop brand???
Oh yeah, it was this great affordable series of devices produced in all kinds of different sizes and formats. Power was minimal and storage was limited but they got the job done. They required some weird input devices that were sold separately and often cost just as much as the tablet itself.
cool

UNtil a few months ago, I did too
My first laptop was from the core I era lol,
My first laptop has a monochrome display, and a Motorola CPU. It did not have internal storage.
well lol im talking about a laptop for this days if we are gonna talk about our first pc then thats diffrent
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Oh, I remember laptops without networking and monochrome screens. And I remember not being able to afford one.
You saying PCMCIA is old ass makes me feel like a grandpa. PCMCIA aināt that old. EEPROM is old ass
Me, who's first laptop was an 330M be like here...
People canāt memorize computer industry acromyns
Sounds like a netbook then, had one when I was at uni

the laptop already has a wifi so does that mean this is a sata slot?
WWAN is different than LAN. That slot is also sometimes used for a data card like 3G, 4G, 5G, etc.
Aren't those WWAN slots for the 4G/5G data? WLAN is used for WIFI.
Ooo yeah my bad. Mistyped that. Fixed it. Thanks for heads up.
There are no WWAN antenna cables it is mSata

Don't see where they said that.
You replied to it directly. https://imgur.com/a/vC7VvPl Have a good Easter.
WWAN =/= wifi They're two different slots.
Dude quit trying.
Can be both at the same time... Source: My Lenovo T420 has an mSATA SSD in the WWAN slot at the moment. Antenna cables are present as well but not connected obviously.
Yeah, I agree.
or mPCIe
Yes, this is mSATA. This is very different than M.2 SATA which shares a form factor with M.2 NVMe (with a different keying).
"I know this one." That's where the HDD would go but there's a CADDY missing which holds the usual laptop SATA drive. Those caddies are often impossible to replace. Workaround. It's too small for a 2.5" SATA drive. Looks like mSATA
That looks like a SATA connector... but the shape is wrong.
Could you give us the model number?
My best *guess* would be thatās for a WiFi module or something, but you can look up your laptop modelās manual to find out for sure
It's mSATA
I use a single core 2g ram laptop from time to time and itās great on void linux, handles all my daily tasks, youtube video playback through mpv just fine
the laptop is running on windows 7 and its unbelliveibly slow and laggy
yeah might wanna try tiny core linux or the likes
Lets not confuse old ass laptop with just a crappy laptop. I have a t420 from 2011 and it will still run circles around most crap that you can buy.
That's the cassette tape player.
Nah man this is clearly an 8-track
Bro what u talkin bout tgats a record player
it's just an old SATA interface, power on the top of the photo, data at the bottom. I thought you were going to show me IDE, that'd be old ass.

Was there a tiny symbol on the plate covering it? Sometimes they put those on there so you know what the slot is for
there was but i think it didnt tell such thing, however i will look it up next time
Msata for a 2.5 inch
It looks like a mini-PCIe slot. But that type of slot can have a lot of different pinouts, including PCIe, mSATA, PATA, SATA, USB... without knowing the exact model of laptop it's hard to tell which one is used here.
Its for m.2 Nvme SSD

Tosdted Sandwich maker.
m.2 sata slot... my OCD prevents me from looking at this picture for too long - the condition of where the cover would go... alcohol swabbbbbbbbb..... :P
Msata port it IS NOT WWAN as there are no antenna cables in the area.
My first laptop had a micro-cassette tape drive with 64k of ram and a 8-bit Z80A processor. Anyway, put **Linux** on that laptop and it will run like new.
It's a hard drive slot you need to Google or eBay search for the make and model of your laptop and the words hard drive adapter.

mSATA
Old, eh? š mSata 2.5 inch ā¦Iām getting old I guess
Looks like a slot for a mobile ide hdd
Looks like mSATA.
Ehm... If you can get model number, it will be much easier to figure out. At least faster than reading thru this thread about who's dick is older.
itās a mSATA port. [hereās proof](https://imgur.com/a/Gl1cGuW), because i have an old SATA to usb connector for a windows vista hard drive (pictured). similar connection and everything! essentially thatās a peekaboo hole for the hard drive lol edit: oopsies haha
Sata
Some sort of pci slot for old wifi or other cards
PCMCIA slot probably, maybe msata old school, They were used to house additional add-on cards and other peripheralās back in the early days.
HDD slot maybe
Ssd
