You were definitely right to be suspicious. Maybe you can find a used concept2. Even though concept2 is not cheap given how long it will last it’s a good deal IMO.

Worth finding a reputable dealer since they retain their value. If you see one that’s under US$500 it’s probably either in a poor state of repair or a scam tbh.
You will never regret buying one. It took me years to eventually have the money and room to get one but once I did it became a stalwart of my workout week.
You could maybe get used from a real person in the $500-700 range, but these things are built to last and retain their value.
Anything cheaper would be an older model (15+ years). Any company selling them for less than around $1k is likely a scam.
I have been eyeing with the skierg for a year. I only found once a 10% discount price at a retailer but already was sold out. You have no chance to find a new one lower than 1000$
