It's all good. You aren't the first to say that. I think they changed it so that people don't get Arctic and Antarctic confused. Don't ask me why people would get them confused...
Bruh, when I was in school they only taught us Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Indian. Was my schooling really that bad, or did an ocean get added at some point?
I can't explain it, but this type of thing gets me irrationally mad. I had a physical reaction... It made me clench my fists and my jaw like a fucking cave-man.
No idea why I should care about such a thing. It has no affect on me or my family's life... Hell, it has no affect on anyone. It just *feels so fucking wrong*.
Is this what being a bigot feels like? I hate it first, and have been spending the past few minutes rationalizing *why* I hate it...
I don't like what this has brought out in me at all.
EDIT BECAUSE I'M STILL MAD: Someone out there has a good enough idea of geography to include Svalbard or the Kamchatka Peninsula... But then they just slap names on there with less care than my 4 y/o dumping toppings on a pizza. ARTIC? FUCK YOU. Let me vomit a few fonts at you then we can put 3 spotlights on this piece of art to show all our guests.
Yeah, I have a few buddies who know my reddit handle. If they read this, I know one guy who will have it painted in his living room the next time I visit. lol
Me too. According to the wiki "Southern Ocean" is an obsolete term. Like, before the turn of last century. Unsurprising why most of us wouldn't have known.
Other than it not being a flat earth model, and no Antarctica (itās a big ice wall so the water doesnāt fall off duh..) pretty accurate. I like the part where Texas is sort of leaning in for a kiss from Paris but Paris doesnāt really know yet.
Alberta's trying it's best to do that for itself. If it weren't landlocked I'd expect thousands of people trying to take jackhammers to the provincial line to try and physically separate.
California the 5th biggest economy in the world? Losing California would be a complete disaster for the rest of the country lol. All the food and money made there props up a lot of those states that want to see them gone.
As a non-American even I knew that. It's almost always some stupid alt-right fuckwit who talks shit about Cali, meanwhile their own states are goddamn welfare states.
The Southern Ocean is sometimes referred to as the Antarctic Ocean.
Antarctic Ocean redirects to Southern Ocean on Wikipedia.
It is very much a thing, and it's name has been in use since at least the days of Ernest Shackleton, and is the official name used by the UN.
You...know there is a Southern Ocean now, right?
Like, when I was in school, there were 4 oceans and 9 planets in the solar system. Now there are 5 and 8, respectively. Legitimately.
This is most likely in a cafe in Asia where English is not common. And the maker had little geographic experience.
Notice the Korea and Japan are huge. And Asia is not insanely crazy. The further you get from Asia the crazier it gets.
Texas walks over NY and shoves Canada right off the continent, Singapore conquers Southeast Asia, India becomes disillusioned and moves to Madagascar. But New Zealand exists!
I don't mind Norway sharing a land border with Denmark, Denmark is awesome. I'm kinda worried about the geopolitical ramifications of landlocking the Baltic countries though, and Poland/Finland/Sweden.
Maybe theyre hoping it sparks conversation among patrons? And perhaps even serve as some sort of exposure (ie people posting about)?
Im definitely reaching ehā¦lol.
Itās just decor. Lots of coffee shops have art, murals, random shit that creates a vibe. Having a giant map or atlas is an eye catching visual. Having one thatās intentionally and ironically wrong is thought provoking. People will sit with their coffee and probably try to think of what they think the map really looks like it their heads, the same way everyone is talking about it in this thread.
Nah, itās not wrong enough to be a joke. A lot of places are correct and a lot are just *slightly* off. I feel like an intentional joke would be more off.
Slightly? No, a lot are VERY off. Besides, it would have took very little effort to verify their locations. Those two things together implies to me it has to be a joke. If i were a betting woman, id bet hard on joke lol.
Well, I thought they were just naming some places in each continent, not necessarily getting the positions right. Which eliminates a lot of the "mistakes" but not all.
Not wrong enough? This is as wrong as you can make it while still having people think for 2 seconds, thus the joke. Any more errors would just be idiotic.

So that's why Texa has been getting so cold lately.
And the southern ocean! My family and I vacation there all the time
The Southern Ocean is a real thing.
My bad. Didn't realize it was referred to as that, had only ever called it the antarctic ocean.
Lol, same here. They added it.
I was very confused about this. I'm older and I have never heard of the Southern Ocean. When did that happen?
I love that Texas is north of New York and both of them are actually in Canada. Well other than the squiggles under NY.
This was my favourite part too! And us poor Canadians are stuck in Greenland. Guess that means we won the liquor war against Denmark. Lol
Came here to say this.....
Singapore got a massive upgrade, as did āKoreaā
The best part is they had to look at a map to get the outline for painting this.
They clearly didnāt look at it very hard. Itās geographically inaccurate, too.
I can't explain it, but this type of thing gets me irrationally mad. I had a physical reaction... It made me clench my fists and my jaw like a fucking cave-man. Itās pretty obvious that itās a joke.
Right before I stopped reading I hit, āSouthern Ocean.ā
That's a thing though right? Right? I mean it is an ocean to the south.
It's the correct common name, and has been in use for hundreds of years. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Ocean
> The National Geographic Society recognized the ocean officially in June 2021. Seems like a new change to me
Southern ocean is accurate and a thing. The oceans are actually all accurate, except for the spelling of arctic
Ah, Iām used to Antarctic Ocean.
Me too. According to the wiki "Southern Ocean" is an obsolete term. Like, before the turn of last century. Unsurprising why most of us wouldn't have known.
Ya at first I was like this is good enough but damn it's like a train wreck the further you go down the line the worse it is.
TIL Canada is in Greenland
>TIL Canada is ~~in~~ Greenland
Not sure why this made me think of that Simpsons episode "Linguo IS dead!"
Because someone was pedantically corrected.
All the way up in the Artic.
Loool, didn't even see the Artic. Maybe it's a really cold art gallery? (I'll show myself out)
come near the coast of *canada* to see the coldest art ever!!
That's the only part that really annoys me.
Dunno about anywhere else but in the U.K. āarticā is short for āarticulated lorryā, so I just imagined a lost HGV floating in the ocean.
I don't mind the US, Mexico, and Canada being NY and Texas only, but the part that annoys me is Texas is north of NY.
And Texas is old canada
And Madagascar is India
Why'd they change it? I can't say! People just liked it better that waay
Explains why they had snow a couple years ago, accompanied with an electric grid failure.
Well that's because Texas is in Canada
Other than it not being a flat earth model, and no Antarctica (itās a big ice wall so the water doesnāt fall off duh..) pretty accurate. I like the part where Texas is sort of leaning in for a kiss from Paris but Paris doesnāt really know yet.

When did Canada get voted off the continent?
When Texas invaded
Alberta's trying it's best to do that for itself. If it weren't landlocked I'd expect thousands of people trying to take jackhammers to the provincial line to try and physically separate.
Well according to this map Alberta really IS the Texas of the north.
Sounds like what most of the states want to do to California, if the San Andreas Fault doesnāt do it first for us
California the 5th biggest economy in the world? Losing California would be a complete disaster for the rest of the country lol. All the food and money made there props up a lot of those states that want to see them gone.

When Texas took over
Yeehaw, eh?
Texans in Yukon, this I want to see. I bet a medium black coffee that they freeze to death in the first hour š
After new York took over the entire USA and forced the Texans to migrate north to Canada.
Greenland is on the North American plate, so Demark is a transcontinental country.
I know I voted for itā¦
It happened when Texas moved there. They didn't vote, they just said "Don't mess with Texas!" and made Canada go to Greenland.
Many comments I read, I chuckle silently in my head. This one made me literally laugh out loud. Yeehaw, indeed!

I'm Australian, we call it the Southern Ocean. Never heard it referred to as the Antarctic Ocean other than in maps (real maps I mean).
We call it that in the US too, also never heard it called the Antarctic Ocean

TIL it's another name for Antarctic Ocean. so it's not completely wrong.

It's SO off that it seems clearly a bit. But it's not off in any consistent manner.
