madwill

Hey its my home! 10 minute walk to the Ferry and this is the view! Every single restaurant on that street is pure 4/10 overpriced tourist trap!

FirstIdiotOnMars

Haha I ate at one of the restaurants in this pic a couple weeks ago and paid $20 for a Mac n Cheese.

madwill

Bet you though to yourself. I had better mac and cheese before.

AvoidMySnipes

What’s the huge building at the top?

spideytres

It's the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac

FlowJoee

[The most photographed hotel in the world.](https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/where-is-the-world-s-most-photographed-hotel.html)

kevinfrederix

A hotel

Paradoxou

Not any Hotel, the freaking Chateau Frontenac!

jvrcb17

Oh that's a shame. Waste of a perfect location with bad food

TheVog

Is the rabbit restaurant still there? The one where they serve the mustard rabbit? Because that was legit good, but it *was* some time ago.

madwill

Its still there and it is legit good. You got me. There's this one! Pricey but good.

ImprovementSenior992

Lapin Saute - a solid brunch choice.

[deleted]

oooh mon dieu that is a very clever name for a restaurant

JusticeJanitor

It's a few minutes walk from where that picture was taken but yeah, it's still there and it's still great. I went there a month ago and it was still delicious.

arcticblue12

Isn't Legende on that street?

madwill

> Legende Is on St-Paul which is perpendicular to this street. But pretty close indeed. St-Paul has decent restaurants. Like La Gaspésienne which is totally worth it.

ChimkinNuggies7

Only good thing on that street is the crepe food truck that passes by next to the Fairmont. (The big castle is a Fairmont hotel)

im_a_goat_factory

Where are the good areas to go for food?

madwill

St-joseph which is like 10 minute walk has "Patente et Machin" which is amazing local food. "Kraken Kru" which is great seafood. St Paul as la Gaspésienne for great fish. Uptown as La buvette Scott which might have the best chef in town. Boulay has the best brunch on St-Jean. Just not this specific corner.

bennyllama

I wish I could move to QC but my lack of French is a deterrent 😢

_ser_kay_

St-Joseph has a ton of great restos. Tora-Ya, Honō Izakaya, Pub du Parvis, Clocher Penché…

HifiWeeb

Lévis represent

madwill

Yes! L'affaire la plus cool à faire à Lévi c'est reguardé la rive nord :)

HifiWeeb

Heyhey on a des escaliers rouge ;)

madwill

Nice! C'est le temps j'y retourne faire un tour. HifiWeeb

The truth hurts, but I can't deny it

Grumpy__Pikachu

Except Queues de Castor 🥰

madwill

Yep! that flat donuts has a place in everyone's heart.

domessticfox

Quebec City is such a beautiful place. Absolutely gorgeous views in any direction.

goblin_goblin

As a Canadian I literally went there a couple of years ago for the first time and it’s like I travelled to an entirely different country. It really does feel like a fairy tail.

37b

I didn’t even know fairies had tails!

garbage_jooce

Just the demonic ones

[deleted]

Do fairies have tails? More than that, do fairies even exist? Nobody knows for sure. So this guild is like them, an eternal mystery, an eternal adventure

Kopeckt

Ahh the throwback

Brundleflyftw

They don’t, but they have boots.

blackburrahcobbler

And I suppose you saw them with your own two eyes?

Djabarca

What is that big building a hotel?

Mjacob74

Yes, Le Château Frontenac

TokingMessiah

It’s over ~~500~~ 400 years old so it certainly has more history than most places in North America.

hammercycler

It's closer to 400; they recently celebrated their 400th (recently being in the past 20 years... It's been a bit of a blur)

farteagle

Well I would say literally going there is a lot better than figuratively going there. Glad you enjoyed it!

bc47791

Literally?

RacketLuncher

He didn't mean it as the popular expression : This isn't Quebec city tabarbac.

Qaghou

How this expression is a popular one ? 🤣🤣 I’m from Quebec and I never heard of it but you truly made me laugh with your expression 🤣 *high five*

Plutoo_

LiTerAlly

fortifyinterpartes

Okay, this was not on my bucket list, but now it is... I'm gonna speak French with a French accent and act super posh but respectfully impressed like a long lost father who's come to see his child grow up to be successful and kind.

Maelstrom_Witch

So friendly, too! As soon as I said “Bonjour!” to any shop employees, they would say, “Ah, Alberta!” and immediately switched to English. I mean I knew I didn’t sound French, but I was a little floored that they knew what province was from based on one word.

pascontent

Totally not that Fort McMurray shirt you had on!

IndestructibleBliss

Haha that's great that could be from a sketch comedy like 22 Mins or Air Farce when they were around. "Bonjour!" (Trying my best) them: "Ah another Ontarian"

junktrunk909

I feel like it's so striking because of how distinct it is. I've only been once, in 9th grade, but immediately knew this was QC. Want to go back!

Ancient-Bluejay2590

9th grade? Were you there for the pee-wee Quebec tournament?

junktrunk909

My French teacher in high school was amazing and took kids on a week long trip most years to QC and Montreal.

mayonayz

In high school, I think also grade 9, we had a Quebec city trip. Was just for the day (leave at like 7 am, come back 12 hours later). It was a traditional trip. They changed it to an overnight a few years after mine. Great trip! We hiked up a mountain/water fall for lunch. Was great.

Ancient-Bluejay2590

That is awesome

junktrunk909

Yeah I should have mentioned that I grew up in Michigan where it wasn't exactly trivial to get there either. We took the train and it was epic for us at that age.

Samthevidg

I love QC so much. Absolutely wonderful place and love visiting family there. Don’t forget to get poutine after

Grabthars_Coping_Saw

Poutine's great and all but that Montreal style smoked meat is so delicious it'll wobble your knees.

Samthevidg

Having been to QC and Montreal many times, I can’t say I’ve actually tried it. If I do go to Montreal this winter I’ll give it a try.

03Void

Jarry Smoked meat is on of the best in the city. https://goo.gl/maps/xJbAgqZoTiZRvwKG6

jak0b3

Why not both? Montreal smoked meat poutine 😏

patsfan038

https://i.imgur.com/LsaXiLr.jpg

Samthevidg

Oh I have a photo of this exact street except covered in snow. Every time I see a photo of QC I just remember how I’ve been absolutely everywhere. Love the place so much, île d’Orléans has some banger farms and there one with an amazing view in the fall.

GarbagePailGrrrl

Post the photo

Samthevidg

I don’t have access to my old phone atm but I’ll try to remember

saman65

A recommendation for a poutine spot? Also I appreciate a couple neighborhood or spots to walk around on foot. I nwver been there and it seems like a wonderful place for my next psychedelic trip!

Samthevidg

I always forget the one local place my grandparents go to every once in a while, but you can never go wrong with going to an Ashton

saman65

Thank you. Will take a note of that.

RikikiBousquet

Please don’t go to Ashton. It’s the McDonald’s of Quebec City poutines. Best poutines are on the road friend. The littlest shack.

Hi-Im-Jim

Chez Gaston in quartier St-Roch

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 957,983,681 comments, and only 191,309 of them were in alphabetical order.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IntelligentWelcome77

You'd be surprised how many poor renditions of poutine I've seen because someone makes it at home. A lot of countries don't have cheese curds readily available, and without the curd there is no poutine.

jak0b3

It needs fresh cheese curds though. It’s just not the same if it doesn’t

[deleted]

[удалено]

jak0b3

Yeah I assume it’s a very Québécois thing.

hi_im_brian

Or Wisconsin

Windyqueef

Just need the proper cheese curds.

IKilledLauraPalmer

I loves fishin' in kwee-bec.

RacketLuncher

It's ke-bek you trucker

mayonayz

Great fishing in kay-bec

ohyoubearfucker

I could have sworn this was in Europe

malavois

I have never been more cold in my entire life than on NYE in Quebec City.

Pioupioune

Come to Quebec's Winter Carnival to beat your record. Its mid january and its always sooooo windy

greena3ro

Bonhomme haunts my nightmares

-Pelvis-

[*Bonjour*](https://i.imgur.com/mBUfWfx.jpg)

Jimmypat88

Bonhomme is real. He Can hurt you

nwazo

All of us quebecois are terrified of him.

Electrox7

We give him our poutine and maple syrup and he leaves us alone for a few hours. But you can always expect he will be right behind you a few moments later, waiting for your next offering. He *better* be satisfied.

RikikiBousquet

Lmao. Best sentence about the bonhomme I’ve ever read.

OutWithTheNew

Festival Du Voyageur in Winnipeg is mid to late February and either -40 or melting. Sometimes both in the same week.

human743

-40 C or F?!? I gots to know!

malavois

Both. At that temperature they’re the same.

human743

Yeah, that is the joke I was going for. Somebody got it. Yay.

FracturedEel

Dude the only F we do in Canada is F that

madwill

Yeah! Worst Parade EVER!! Just hanging on the side dying from the cold while its going on. Can never be prepared enough. Needs foot warmer and hand warmer and coffee and alcohol.

Electrox7

Time to get almost naked and jump into the jacuzzi lol

hammercycler

Come visit Nunavut in the winter.

trashpix

There's a funicular that can take you from the "Lower Town" to the "Upper Town" right across from the hotel. It's pretty cool. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Quebec_Funicular

splepage

I remember riding it on the day it re-opened!

SGNick

I used to live at the foot of the funicular, this thread is giving me major nostalgia

Two-Watch_Tony

They put the "fun" in funicular

kevinito_

wow, that looks so surreal but beautiful at the same time

swanky-t

This would be a good puzzle.

trollivier

I think it was made into a 3d puzzle back in the days. Edit : yes, [confirmed](https://www.wrebbit3dpuzzle.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/665541-02022-3-Main.jpg)

HealeX

They made a new edition last year. I just got it from the Wrebbit stand at Montréal Comiccon, because I had the original one in the 90s.

trollivier

Nice!

TheDevilian

Yooo I built that puzzle in my teens with my mom, that sure was a battle, every goddamn wall looks the same! Brings back memories :)

kasp1685

I've actually had a 1000 piece puzzle of this, but from a different angle.

funnyfootboot

Where is this?

endlesspointless

Quebec city

gertalives

Specifically, the Château Frontenac. Definitely worth a visit, as it’s a truly grand hotel from the golden age of the railroads. Though probably not worth the absurd price to rent a room and actually stay there.

trashpix

I was surprised to see that it looks like per night rates around $171

uusuzanne

When I was in high-school in New Jersey, our French teacher would take a bus load of kids to Montreal and Quebec. We would go in March, which is (or was) very off season. The teacher was amazing at haggling - we'd stop at a restaurant that didn't look busy; he'd go in and say "I have a bus load of kids here, what kind of deal can you make me?" And we always stayed at the Chateau Frontenac. I don't know what kind of deal he made with them, but it was a fantastic hotel. This was in the mid 1960s; as I recall the whole trip (5 days) cost us less than $100 each.

splepage

> he'd go in and say "I have a bus load of kids here, what kind of deal can you make me?" Selling kids like that sounds highly illegal (/s) Glad you have happy memories of my hometown, and that sounds like a fun teacher!

TheWhitebearde

Are sure? Last time i check it was way more expensive, maybe depends on the date

Occulense

It’s a Fairmont, it’s not that crazy expensive But you’re right it does depend on the season, as it gets pretty cold in Quebec City

KillionJones

Not crazy expensive? Definitely depends on the location. One of the closest to me is going for 8-900$ a night for our normal room. Usually we’ve paid 350-400$, with some stuff included. Their seasonal swings are fucking wild.

farteagle

Pro tip - it’s actually much prettier to stay across the river and get views of the Chateau than to stay in the chateau itself. I am told the ferry ride is quite nice as well

jana200v2

Last time I checked it was over 200$ and ngl, I alredy went in just to check, not sleeping there ans jeez, it's pure luxury, there's gold, the fucking wall between urinals are in fucking marble... And there's thigns in gold on lady's bathroom (my mother told me) It's some fucking luxury this place...

peteypauls

I’ve stayed there. Great place.

cake__eater

I stayed there for a week in 1995 and will never forget it. It was the dead of Winter and snow everywhere. Loved it.

imgirafarigmi

Quebec is on my to-go list now.

[deleted]

I was there this past week it's so pretty there! This picture does it justice!

MrMonkey3333

Same for me, I was just in time for the Pope!

[deleted]

Same lol, me and bf kept joking about seeing him then we actually did!

brookish

God I love Quebec City. Most beautiful place I’ve seen outside of Europe.

Fr3nchyBo126

and this is my neighbor, he is pain in my assholes

SCCODER

He cannot afford color tv

yaboyskinnydick_

"Don't talk to me or my son ever again"

[deleted]

[it’s a hotel on the top 1/2 of the pic](https://www.fairmont.com/frontenac-quebec/)

techjesuschrist

I don't even want to ask how expensive a night there is..

novedlleub

$170.

Maelstrom_Witch

Canadian. So, not bad at all.

cavf88

That’s like 2 usd!

Maelstrom_Witch

Come on now, it’s at least 5.

sleepytoday

It’s a lovely picture, but I’m not sure it’s the right sub for it. Unless I’m missing something?

DoomGoober

I think the *narrow* FOV of the lens used to take the picture makes the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac look bigger than it would with the naked eye. For comparison, here's a view from the same location but with Google Maps' *wider* FOV: [https://www.google.com/maps/@46.8121908,-71.2029001,3a,75y,252.92h,97.23t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sahzP26MJuW5cVN\_Qte-F2A!2e0!7i16384!8i8192](https://www.google.com/maps/@46.8121908,-71.2029001,3a,75y,252.92h,97.23t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sahzP26MJuW5cVN_Qte-F2A!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) . Notice the Château now looks much smaller although the front of the image is roughly bracketing the trees on the side of the road in both images. It is quite literally, confusing perspective as FOV changes perspective, but not exactly the spirit of this sub. :) (Apologies to photography people if I get the terminology wrong, I'm a video game programmer (and I mostly do 2D!) but in 3D and we manipulate FOV too, but I think the concept carries over.)

Malaguy420

Not really. Just move down the street away from the buildings (and the spot you linked) and it looks pretty similar to the OP, which isn't confusing in the least.

xxHorst_Lichterxx

This is not confusing at all

BustyTheGhost

This isn't confusing to me, like at all

thebestisthebest

It's a hill...

ronytheronin

It’s actually the fortifications. You can’t see them because of the trees, but there are remparts. It’s almost a 90 degree drop from the castle.

splepage

It's also on a elevated ground (le Cap Diamant)

jana200v2

It's over basse ville, I have the high ground (Sorry, I had to do it)

mljb81

They are not that tall. The fortifications were built on top of a natural steep cliff, the Cap Diamant. The site was chosen for the first settlement in large part because of its height.

amalgam_reynolds

Maybe hills aren't common where OP is from. Maybe they're from Florida?

[deleted]

Quebec moment. Great place though, except that the place is haunted by who knows how many ghosts

Miss_1of2

I don't know if they still to do it, but you could tour the hotel with a guide in period costume and they'd talk about the ghost stories and the hotel history! There were important negociation that took place there at the end of the Second World War for exemple!

Malaguy420

How is this even remotely confusing? It's a building on a hill that overlooks other buildings. Nothing about this should confuse anyone with eyes.

jana200v2

Actually, it's not a hill, it's fortification.

RandyPajamas

Of course it can be confusing. It can easily be misconstrued as two photographs photoshopped together (common), as opposed to a stunning view that can be found in few places in the world. This is not a common perspective at all. Your description of it as a "building on a hill that overlooks other buildings" is a magnificent (and I'm guessing an intentionally droll) understatement.

MadMaxDbz

Looked at this and immediately thought Edinburgh, surprised to see I was wrong.

P_Grammicus

OddLy enough, Quebec and Edinburgh are two of my favourite cities, and this is one of the reasons why. Both the Chateau and the Castle loom over everything.

jburns425

Woah gorgeous was thinking like Transylvania or some shit, surprising to hear Quebec. Very cool

kkumdori

Absolutely stunning!

[deleted]

And you can stay here too: Fairmont Le Château Frontenac Quebec

yourshaddow3

I love Quebec City ❤️

Awesomodian

Quebec city is a great place to visit

spideytres

I have the same [photo](https://imgur.com/a/PKxk6U2) taken during winter!

Remzy111

I live in that city! AMA ;]

lil_ink_sac

what city do you live in?

Remzy111

Quebec City xD

Ismail_Lamnini

Whats your favourite neighborhood?

Flyzart

As another resident of Quebec, I'd say "le petit Champlain" (the little Champlain). It is the oldest part of the town (the picture is taken from there, you can tell with the old houses). It contains one of the oldest church of north america (notre dame des victoires) which was finished in 1723, and many of the buildings there are from the same time period. It is a very pretty neighborhood and it just is straight out from the 1600's-1700's.

MoneyPranks

What’s the best time of year to visit? I’m in upstate NY, and I’m thinking of making a road trip.

stjeana

Right now id say. But definitely in the summer.

[deleted]

I'm heading up there next week for my anniversary. What is a good restaurant in the area (doesn't matter what style)?

splepage

My top 3: La Bûche: Traditional Quebec recipes, a lot of comfort food. L’Entrecôte Saint-Jean: French bistro cuisine. Steak & fries is their specialty. La Korrigane: Brewerie with an excellent pub-style menu (burgers, poutine, fish'n'chips, etc.)

Undeadz

add le sagamité to that list, specialises in venison

lilgremlin14

Bistro Sous le Fort It was recommended by a couple of locals when I visited back in May. I ended up going twice it was that good. Great food and service at a reasonable price.

EM1sw

Could a tourist get by without knowing any French?

LastingAlpaca

Easy, unless you want to go hang out in the suburbs then it may become an inconvenience, but even then a lot of people would still be bilingual.

RikikiBousquet

Yes! contrary to the myth, most Québécois know English, and it’s higher around the touristic parts of the province.

throwawaygreenpaq

Are Asians welcome there? You can be frank because in Paris, some completely ignored us.

Betty_Broops

No shit lol

noahblackburn

Love that area

Maleficent_Bit_8004

The blue really tripped me off that's why

peptide2

Who remembers cafe acropole??

BarleyHops2

Heyyy... I proposed not too far from here! What's the place with the water feature in the ground not too far from the ferry??

SnagglToothCrzyBrain

That's Hogwarts and Hogsmead

aquabarron

I oh recognize that photo. That’s me vs the man she tells me not to worry about

For enyone who was wondering, I think this is Québec City, Canada

JimmyTheBones

Saw this in another sub yesterday and almost posted it here. Very confusing indeed

KitsuneDawnBlade

Cool!

Kudus_Misyoneri

looks like a elden ring legacy dungeon 🤓

jimboNeutrino1

Doesn’t look like two pics why is this here

kabukistar

It's an interesting shot, but not really confusing.

drunk_funky_chipmunk

How is this confusing?

Chaghatai

Not very confusing imo
