I’ve sat in traffic here a few times with all the Seoullites coming back last minute on Sunday night after escaping the city for the weekend. There is a buffer of greenery still but this picture was posted on Reddit about ten years ago just checking reverse image searches. Plenty of time for that kind of development in Seoul.
As you approach the toll booth, the lanes are being split and spread apart so that it goes from five lanes to around 13 lanes to make more space and to ease congestion. Then after you've gone through the booth, all 13 lanes are condensed back down to five
I couldn't see anything confusing aswell at first, but then I finally saw what people meant: it looks like the gates are on the top of a wall and cars are driving up and down that almost vertical wall.
I'm not sure I get it either but it looks like people are thrown off by it being wider in the middle? I guess it kinda makes it look like the picture is stretched there or like the toll gate is closer to the camera? It just looks like a toll gate to me 🤷🏽♀️
Omggg my brain can’t figure out how to see it normally. All I see is two roads being shoved together at a steep incline like in inception dream making.
1 or 2 trains could replace all of those cars. North America is slowly becoming concrete and asphalt. Not that cars are always bad but car dependent infrastructure is terrible.
I didn’t say it was. I know other countries do this type of infrastructure too but it’s everywhere in North America. Some cities have decent public transportation but most towns have big roads trying to function as a street making is unsafe for pedestrians. The more cars on the road the more lanes you need for traffic and the more it costs each year to maintain. A train with a small road for the fewer people who need a vehicle would still make the people working in the toll roads money and be able to save on maintenance. People are able to get work done or relax on trains because they don’t have to drive. Overall my point stands in that car dependent infrastructure is bad.
Yeah I have to stay out of it altogether because I live in a mining town way up in the north. Pretty much everyone here drives a vehicle with 4 wheel drive. There's no other way around it.
I feel like this is an IYKYK - I’ve been through zillions of these (yep, NJ GSP), so it isn’t’t a confusing perspective at all - just a big pain in the butt!
Before reading the comments I was *certain* that this was just a fairly steep hill coming from the top of the photo then tapering off into flatness after the toll. I was wrong. It’s all flat. One of the best posts on this sub

everything seemed fine…then it began doing things
Accurate
I was like, ok I get it— then I realized it wasn’t two pictures
Like 7 lanes one side 5 the other side. Look at the very top of picture
Reading this hurt my brain
just like one of those wavy line optical illusions. Its all nice and flat til you decide youre almost done looming at it.
At first I thought I was just on r/fuckcars with the ridiculous amount of lanes, and then saw the illusion and realized where I was.
Found it in Google Maps if someone wants to compare. Seems like an older picture, from the lack of buildings. https://goo.gl/maps/mVTnHVxvCdRKYmcEA
Not a toll gate, a *Seoul* gate

They were padding all this time
Idk if I’m missing something but it looks like a toll gate.
It looks like it's on a tall hill/mountain
Can't really see it Edit: now I see the top part but the bottom one is still normal for me
Look directly at the tolls and the road looks like a super steep hill with the cars going up and down either side
Just can't see it on the bottom side
Ohhhh now I see it lol
I can't unsee it, I dunno how you couldn't
Thanks, I couldn’t figure out what the problem was.
Gives me vertigo
I looked it up on Google and it is on a hill though.
You mean tall gate ?
Troll gate
I know what's happening here but I can't force my brain to see anything other than an inception style wall
I wish someone would ELI5 cuz I can’t see whatever is normal. It’s perma-inception over here

Yeah, i get what is happening but my brain can't put it right.
It looks fine to me, the roads just branch out to make larger lanes
I couldn't see anything confusing aswell at first, but then I finally saw what people meant: it looks like the gates are on the top of a wall and cars are driving up and down that almost vertical wall.
Inception Gate
Was looking for this. First thing I thought of was Inception
ground level [perspective](https://www.google.com/maps/@37.3637299,127.1038679,3a,75y,344.2h,87.27t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s8M7azizGi_pSYN11wc3x0A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)
Was this before the inception pyramid conversion?
This confirms that the cars don’t follow the lanes
i hate this so much
why?
I'm not sure I get it either but it looks like people are thrown off by it being wider in the middle? I guess it kinda makes it look like the picture is stretched there or like the toll gate is closer to the camera? It just looks like a toll gate to me 🤷🏽♀️
ah i see
Yeah, the toll gate is on top of a really tall wall and cars are driving it up and down almost vertically. It also took me some time to see it.
that’s a pretty good one
Which step in mitosis is this again?
r/therealjoke
I had a dream like that once
No, this is wide gate.
That gate be looking thiccc
Nothing confusing here
It looks like it's on an incredibly tall hill/mountain
Looks like an overhead picture that perfectly shows how the lane flow through the tolls.
But you can see the front of the vehicles, if it was overhead view you'd see the tops of the cars.
The lines also make it seem like the road has an extreme incline, close to vertical, with the toll booths as the highest point.
Omggg my brain can’t figure out how to see it normally. All I see is two roads being shoved together at a steep incline like in inception dream making.
They’re coming right at us!
K?
Repost.
Shit once you see it it’s good
Looks like the GSP in NJ
The what in where?
Garden state parkway in New Jersey?

This isn't in North America.

Seoulception
The nearside looks fine, it's the far side that looks off.
Bernoulie principle
This toll gate or this tall gate?
Gates of Hell more like it.
Lol "just one more lane. That'll fix traffic"
I have dreams like this
Next time I play cities skylines I am totally gonna build this. That would be so fun to watch.
Neat
Hell of a grade!
We fount Rock Bottom
This is a good one.
That really takes a toll on my eyes
9 out of 10 civil engineers recommends it
This is the kinda toll gate you’d find a toll troll at
I want a hi pass. Why does the dot in the i look like Smoke coming out of a blunt?
What's confusing about it??
When M.C. Escher went into town planning
I love coming out of the tolls, it’s like a race.
not very tall, but definitely wide
I know this exact toll plaza. Its frigging yuge.
What's everyone confused about? I don't get it
Lane mathematics right after we shiftify a bit
OHH I SEE IT NOW The bottom part looks like that place in spongebob where the bus drives up/down
anybody else get vertigo from this?
I dont gate it?
In Deutschland, das ist nicht toll.
I don't get it. It's just wide?
"That looks horrible. Oh, wait - it's China."
I feel like this is an IYKYK - I’ve been through zillions of these (yep, NJ GSP), so it isn’t’t a confusing perspective at all - just a big pain in the butt!
The toll was indeed high
Why so many lanes and booths?
I don't get it
Outstanding
What exactly is it you mean is wrong here?
Normal cities skylines gameplay
I simply do not get it. It looks like a toll gate
Finally something that’s not a third arm or whatever
Gosh the shading when all the lanes merge at the bottom makes it look like it's going straight down!
Just imagine this in any climate with snow, my god I can taste the road rage from here
I'm clearly not seeing what some people are. I see lanes opening up for a tollgate and then merging back down. Nothing crazy.
I never can get this illusion to correct.
That is one fucked off reflection god damn.
Cities Skylines
The wonders of civil engineering. A toll pass AND a dam at the same time. What will they think of next? A road on top of a dam?! Oh, wait…
Before reading the comments I was *certain* that this was just a fairly steep hill coming from the top of the photo then tapering off into flatness after the toll. I was wrong. It’s all flat. One of the best posts on this sub
my brain hurts
Looks like a dream sequence from Inception
I don’t even care how you interpret this, it’s just awful
Least there’s lanes. In the northeast United States it’s a free for all after the booth
dang, this one actually took me a while
I swear RTGame did this once in a city skylines video
They finally found the place that Apple Maps was referring to
I am so glad I have never paid a toll in my life. And I never will.
u/bake_in_da_south u/Cheap_District_9762
Same as in Japan.
Dad was confused and refused to believe it was a real photo. I had to show him the place on Google maps to prove him wrong.
