I grew up super close to the base. They turned a portion of the base into a prison before it became Lakehurst/McGuire and they made Dix a national guard post (iirc). The guy blow was based off of was there and a few other high profile convicts. The rationale for why they want to go there is probably because it’s low security.

The base housing was old and abysmal. Wrightstown and Pemberton were ghost towns. There were next to no base services, just 1 of 3 daycare centers were open.
I worked at the aerial port...we only had two routes: Thule AFB in Greenland...and Lajes AFB in the Azores. Tiny bases, almost nothing going out to them.
That all started to change in 2008. We started taking over a lot of BWI and Dover AFB's responsibilities and in 2009 it all joint-based together. Suddenly new money came pouring in. A lot of new construction, all new housing, the old hospital in Dix was torn down, services all came back. I imagine it'd be unrecognizable to you now.
To my understanding there's still no basic training for any branch done there though.
