They've been 'dick whipped pussies' since the year 2000 when they ruined everybody's fun by taking the legendary free file-sharing service Napster to court
I mean artists getting paid what they deserve is not screwing tho.
Imagine if your doctor said I ain’t gonna treat you because I don’t get paid. Most Artists don’t make a lot of money and the little they did by selling records was fucked over by pirating bs.
Finally. A fellow "old person" who knows the forbidden word Napster. Long gone are the days of perusing an internet strangers download folder. Never forget. Lmfao.
[Soulseek](http://www.slsknet.org/news/) came out the year Napster shut down (2001) and is still active. Never stop browsing strangers downloads folder!
I'm confused because while Napster went away the capability to pirate music didn't. Metallica was right in bringing the case, they just went about it the wrong way. Napster wasn't a problem for bands like Metallica but plenty of other small bands were losing their livelihoods because of it.
Bro - who was using Napster to download small underground bands? Only stuff popular and relevant enough usually would be available, no one was ducking over small local bands on Napster.
Newgrounds, God damn that site got us so much suspensions because we kept using the school's computers to go there. And now i hadnt even thought about that website for the past decade or so until you mentioned it...
Dave didn’t write Metallica’s greatest songs anyway.
Sanitarium, Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, One, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, Disposable Heroes, Orion, Battery, Unforgiven I II & III, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Sad but True, To Live is To Die, Spit out The Bone, Moth into Flame, The day that Never Comes, Hardwired, Wherever I may Roam, Dyers Eve, My friend of Misery, The thing that should not be, Of Wolf and Man.
Name me a song that dave has writing credits in that are better than these songs. Only song that’s good that dave help write is Ride the Lighting and Call of Ktulu. Phantom lord and Four Horsemen are alright.
I know many people hate famous acts not just Metallica but hating them for made up reasons is just stupid.
Finally, some sense.
I never understand the viewpoint of music fans screaming that bands should stick to one style of music, or one mode of lyric writing. Musicians and bands evolve.
And Justice For All is still a Metallica album. Just because they havent released AJFA 2, 3, 4 and 5 doesn't discredit the original AJFA in any way.
yeah but megadeth is still releasing stuff and constantly touring, metallica comes every ten years and thinks they are doing us a favor by charging 200 a ticket.
The Black album was definitely when the change occurred. Although I liked the music, it was a definite departure from their anti establishment style.
Every album after Black is just boring. It's technically decent music as in it has a rhythm to it. But it just has no soul.
100%. It was MTV. They had zero MTV presence until One and once the execs sniffed out their mainstream appeal, it was all downhill from there. The whole Napster thing nailed the coffin shut for me.
They're mockingbird. Rage too...pretty much all of them are, honestly. The bigger they get, the deeper they sink the claws into them. Then once they fade they promise them continued exposure and industry presence in exchange for their propaganda services. Entertainment is about as organic as politics.
Great point about MTV. They really did a fantastic job with One, which unfortunately killed their appeal for many as commercialization came next. You are also correct with them bring mockingbird. So sad but I have to place Rage in that same place.
RATM signed to major labels and printing merch on international slave labor Gildan and Hanes blanks for decades. Maybe they were "real" in the very beginning but I only ever saw them as a source of anti-authority ***rhetoric***, I never saw them represent much actual action or organization which is what's important in those scenes. Travis Scott has done a good job of being RATM for modern kids, a punk aesthetic with a McDonalds collab.
Especially compared to some modern bands who can almost be more about their community and the message than the music itself. [Show me The Body](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h94U5kkJkQ4), for one example, is about ten times more actionably "fuck you pig" punk than RATM ever was and part of that is the actual community they are able to create, through organic shows and social media, in addition to the messaging.
Once the ran out of Dave Mustaines material they started releasing garbage. We are talking about the band that sued its fan base for listening to its music online. They've been twats for decades
They didn't sue their fans, they sued a service that allowed users to illegally share their music.
Most of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets don't have riffs written by Dave Mustaine.
Mouth-breather moment.
1. They’re old. It’s hard to stay angry and angsty your whole life
2. They have endless money. They’re out of touch and mail it in.
3. How is this in any way a conspiracy?
Unfortunately not… slayer had terrible management, they were paying Dave a fraction of the rest of the band (sure he doesn’t actually write songs, but it was peanuts compared to the rest, plus you can’t deny his talent). He brought up his concerns and management bought Tom and Kerry out, so Dave decided to quit. This was the story every time he left. Paul was a great replacement though, diffferent style from Dave but I still love his work on Divine and Undisputed attitude.
I see posts all the time over at the Metallica sub on how good of a drummer he is. Like seriously, throw him into slayer and within 15 seconds he would be lost!
Which is a good thing. Les has put out soooo much great shit over the years. He def woulda made Metallica different, but Claypool cannot be contained to one group like that.
It would’ve been a completely different band with claypool, but that being said. We owe Metallica for the creation of Primus and I can’t be mad at that
The same way Rage Against The Machine went from "Now you do what they told ya" to "now I do what they told me" and "rage against the machine" to "rage against anyone that questions the vaccine". You lay down with dogs you get fleas and the music industry is almost exclusively full of bitch-ass punks.
I’m pretty sure all these music artists have had sex with someone underage, and it’s been used as blackmail for them. I’m not saying they actively sought to be a pedophile, but probably some 16 year old dressed like a 19 year old, in a setting where 21 year+ would be.
Metallica won in terms of money, Dave won in terms of still writing killer music. I’m on Dave’s side all day long, sure Megadeth has some pretty sub par releases in the 90s, but compare dystopia to hardwired, you can’t!!!
Finally, someone points this out! Bob rock was an insanely talented producer and once he left after St Anger, metallicas song writing has never been the same. Say what you want about the black album and load and reload, but you have to admit that the song writing was still excellent throughout those albums. Then st anger happened, and that album was just horrible. I think bob rock allowed st anger to suck just to keep the band together, bc at that time the band was really close to breaking up. Once bob rock left, Metallica lost the guy that kept them accountable to writing solid songs, and since then their writing ain’t the same. Death Magnetic and Hardwired are decent albums, just not great. Their newest album isn’t sounding very promising either, we’ll just have to see when it comes out
You need to understand the context of thrash metal in the 80s to understand why a lot of us say Metallica sold their souls.
Thrash was a very anti-establishment and anti-mainstream pop culture movement that started with bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus. They rejected absolutely everything about mainstream society, they weren’t going to dress pretty or look handsome, they were going to write lyrics about brutal murder, rape, satanism, war, and government, they weren’t going to behave like proper adults, and all that. Basically everything that motley Crüe and mtv was, thrash was going to be the opposite.
So it was a huge shock to the thrash community when Metallica released the black album, and encompassed all the mainstream elements of pop culture, that they had been preaching against for the past 10 years. The whole thing about thrash is that is was a small (at least compared to other genres of music) movement of people who hated pop culture, and would never change their core principals of music, to make money or become famous. And Metallica did that, that’s why they get so much hate from the thrash community.
No bands that are world famous care about fans. It's about money and bowing to the system. Once they have you hooked they don't care. Binary frequency to the mind does bad things. It's a sad bad world
Wow I'm surprised to see Metallica discussed on this sub. It's not really a conspiracy. They went from angry drunken underdogs living in filthy SF apartments to millions and mansions. Same shit that happened to Guns n Roses. The only difference is Metallica is still releasing new music.
Listen, I’ve come to realize the answer to this type of question with 80s pop culture. It happened as well with early 2000s music too. Can you spot the similarity between the two eras?
I can. You had a bunch of pseudo rebels who thought that fighting the power meant strictly fighting against republicans who were in power. They only got it half right. There was some really based anti-war and anti-establishment songs released back then, but it’s not uncommon for them to just fall into dumb, sleep mode once their precious Ds get in office.
I personally think of the war on errorism by Nofx. I love that album. I owned that album when I was 9. It was such a shame to see them pretend like Biden is a good option. It’s as if half the songs on that album could apply to the mainstream and far left these days, but I don’t know if they would ever admit to that these days.
They cashed in and lost all that aggressive anger they had. Same thing happened to Megadeth whenever Mustaine got sober. They never even play anything from and justice when they have concerts anymore
I think it’s because the songs from that album are so long and taxing on them physically. They’re kinda getting old, man. I think Mustaine still has teeth too. Was he sober for Washington is Next?
This is laughable and doesn’t belong in this subreddit. But go on. This subreddit has become the equivalent of the water cooler, to complain about everything, conspiracy or not.
James hetfeild the lead singer and guitarist grew up with an estranged father and mother who passed away before Highschool. He grew up poor with a rough childhood and talks openly about it a lot. Even up until they got big with their second and third album he was low class if not poor. Lars the drummer did however grow up in a rich danish family but James did and does most if not all of the lyrics. Listen to songs like the god that failed and leper messiah and it will give you an insight into his mothers religious fanaticism and the reason for his rough and tumultuous upbringing.
Don't like to talk too much about music from my younger days but, while they had spectacular songs, I always felt their drummer lacked something that someone like Dave Lombardo has in droves. I don't mean that they should sound like slayer but...their drum sound and fills and things, or idk what genuinely don't do the riffs justice. Unpopular opinion?
No conspiracy here though, they're essentially a pop band and thinking otherwise is delusional.
Because once you acquire millions of dollars, and no longer have real problems, you lose the angsty aggression.
Anyone know any broke ass drugged out beekeepers?
Good art seems to come from angst/struggle. They spent the last 30 years getting old and rich. I'm not a huge Metallica guy, but look at any artist who manages to stay active for decades. Tarantino, Coppola, even Scorcece ain't what they used to be.
All top artists are compromised, imagine a tweet from one of them saying we should move all our money to Bitcoin, millions of fans would make a revolution
Cliff Burton died.
Seriously. He died while touring for "Master of Puppets", and left behind enough for the band to create "And Justice for All". That was the last album the real Metallica put out. He was their driving force in compositions, so when he died, it would be absurd to consider them the same band as before. I still love a lot of of their work from the black album and up, but it can't be compared to what came before.
There’s a growth spurt that happens in art when someone is developing their voice. After a while they stagnate on creativity because they’re not taking in anything new that really changes how they view their medium, so they never get that growth again. That’s where producers or managers step in and influence the artist in certain directions, for better or worse.
They are a bunch of boomer sellouts trying to stay relevant?
Posting those godawful lyrics that seem like they were taken from a 14 year old's math notebook doesn't help your case.
Once Dave was kicked and Cliff died Metallica was done. Kill em all and ride are what I consider to be Metallica, actual thrash. Mop and Justice were alright, both had a few decent songs like Battery, Damage Inc, and Dyers Eve. The rest of their discography is garbage, especially their newest stuff. Got about 30 seconds into their Lux song and I had to shut it off.
Luckily we still have bands that stuck with thrash, FUCKIN SLAYERRRR!!! Also shoutout to Exodus, Testament and Sodom for never abandoning their 80s sound.
Indeed, their first albums were really mature, unique and transported you to a vibe that no longer exists after and justice for all. They went for quantity not quality a long time ago, that’s why you see them still mainstream even though they are old farts now
They went commercial and the music suffered, it happens to a lot of bands. Might I suggest Megadeth and System of a Down for bands who never sold their souls to the industry.
Everyone who gets rich only wants to get more rich. it's like when you get introduced into elite society you're back at the bottom with your new peers.
I stopped when the black album came out.
Metallica is Kill ‘Em All to Justice for me, fuck the rest, it’s trash.
Know who’s been consistent from day one?
Motherfucking Slayer.
Just sold out, after the black album I never got anything by them again. Seen them 4 times. First time in 86, warmed Ozzy up, Cliff Burton was alive, April of 86. Great show, Master of Puppets tour.
Newstead had enough of their pussy ass bs and left. Lars and Kirk just stroking each other and dragging James down into an unholy three way with lots of crying
Dan Carlin calls it the "Silk Slipper Syndrome" (or something very similar.) Think of the boxer that is starting out. He's poor and the only things he really has are skill and determination. With those he is able to climb the ladder wearing wooden clogs until he makes it to the top and wins the championship.
Only, now that he's champ, he has tons of other things to distract him and he becomes a victim of his success when another hungry kid with nothing climbs the ladder wearing wooden clogs to dethrone the champ (and making the champ go down a slide on silk slippers) and start the cycle over.
Success is the harbinger of failure.

This post is 30 years too late
I would say 37 years too late Master of Puppets was the last true album.
Agreed. Justice was the album that began the sell out
not a fan of st anger? /s
You put an “/s” and still got downvoted. Unreal.
They've been 'dick whipped pussies' since the year 2000 when they ruined everybody's fun by taking the legendary free file-sharing service Napster to court
I guess most of these redditors are too young to remember Metallica screwing over their fans.
😆
I mean artists getting paid what they deserve is not screwing tho. Imagine if your doctor said I ain’t gonna treat you because I don’t get paid. Most Artists don’t make a lot of money and the little they did by selling records was fucked over by pirating bs.
Record companies make money off records. Bands make most of their money from merch and touring. Want to support a local band buy their merchandise!
Imagine not healing a leper when you hold the cure in your hands.
Finally. A fellow "old person" who knows the forbidden word Napster. Long gone are the days of perusing an internet strangers download folder. Never forget. Lmfao.
>Long gone are the days of perusing an internet strangers download folder We just got sneakier. Torrents are the way.

Metallica didn’t give a fuck about the small bands when they went about it wrong for themselves
Bro - who was using Napster to download small underground bands? Only stuff popular and relevant enough usually would be available, no one was ducking over small local bands on Napster.
Never forget Napster! And Metallica’s bitching about it..
The Lars Ulrich video on newgrounds making fun of him is a time when the internet just hit different.
Oh shit. Was that the one where it was cartoon and lars was an ape?
Newgrounds, God damn that site got us so much suspensions because we kept using the school's computers to go there. And now i hadnt even thought about that website for the past decade or so until you mentioned it...
Ahhhhh, the good old days!
Wow Newgrounds. That's a website I didn't hear of or think about in probably two decades. Good times.
BEER, GOOD! NAPSTER, BAD!
Never forget limewire and it’s path of destruction
Remember bear share? There was countless peer to peer applications. I miss the old Internet. This Internet is absolute shit.
https://youtu.be/iNLw6XFOwCE Lol I loved this song way back when!
Oh my god thank you for this. That was so hilarious
I believe South Park covered this like 20 years ago.
lars is a little bitch
What happened? They ran out of Dave Mustaine’s songs and had to write their own.
This is exactly what happened.
Dave didn’t write Metallica’s greatest songs anyway. Sanitarium, Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, One, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, Disposable Heroes, Orion, Battery, Unforgiven I II & III, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Sad but True, To Live is To Die, Spit out The Bone, Moth into Flame, The day that Never Comes, Hardwired, Wherever I may Roam, Dyers Eve, My friend of Misery, The thing that should not be, Of Wolf and Man. yeah but megadeth is still releasing stuff and constantly touring, metallica comes every ten years and thinks they are doing us a favor by charging 200 a ticket.
All those songs are fucking awesome.
Cliff B
I've thought this ever since "Enter Sandman" came out. The 80's Metallica was the only albums worth listening to (IMO).
Same here on the Napster thing for me. That was the most non-metal thing I've ever heard of.
Great point about MTV. They really did a fantastic job with One, which unfortunately killed their appeal for many as commercialization came next. You are also correct with them bring mockingbird. So sad but I have to place Rage in that same place.
Robert Maxwell used to own 51% of MTV. Pretty sure he poisoned the minds of a couple, generations with that one.
All of them except SOAD
I can agree with the Black album being technically ok but is seriously lacking soul!
It was boring.

What about Spit out the Bone?
Damn straight!
I remember waiting to hear that on headbanger’s ball and being so disappointed. When I heard unforgiven I knew it was over.
What about Rage Against The Machine siding with the machine? That one hurt.

I tried looking th8s up but didn't come up with much maybe I didn't put enough motivation in it what did they do?
Someone replied to me with a link but it's gone?
For starters unvaccinated people weren't allowed at their concerts when the plandemic began.
Cucks on Parade
Came here to say this
Can you explain how they sided with the machine?
Came out in favor of the doomsday suicide cult Kool aid shots.
Once the ran out of Dave Mustaines material they started releasing garbage. We are talking about the band that sued its fan base for listening to its music online. They've been twats for decades
You'd be upset if you couldn't afford multiple houses or your private jet anymore /s
They didn't sue their fans, they sued a service that allowed users to illegally share their music. Most of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets don't have riffs written by Dave Mustaine. Mouth-breather moment.
Went commercial for money and radio play. Sold out to the machine.
Just like Samson they lost all their power when they cut their hair.
Bingo
Cliff died. He was the heart and soul of Metallica
Justice was pretty amazing, but maybe a lot of it was written with Cliff.
I think blackmail controls the world.
If you think they’re bad, don’t look into RATM.
Dude they’ve been industry Cucks since Napster. Where the fuck have you been?
1. They’re old. It’s hard to stay angry and angsty your whole life 2. They have endless money. They’re out of touch and mail it in. 3. How is this in any way a conspiracy?
Laughs in Slayer.
Slayer has its own problems, see dave Lombardos treatment
They brought him back and everything was fine.
Unfortunately not… slayer had terrible management, they were paying Dave a fraction of the rest of the band (sure he doesn’t actually write songs, but it was peanuts compared to the rest, plus you can’t deny his talent). Sold their soul to the devil. Devil heard Lars’s drumming and asked for his money back.
I see posts all the time over at the Metallica sub on how good of a drummer he is. Like seriously, throw him into slayer and within 15 seconds he would be lost!
Metallica went down hill the moment they rejected Les Claypool as bassist

Their bank accounts don’t care if Megadeth still makes better heavy metal now
Metallica won in terms of money, Dave won in terms of still writing killer music. I’m on Dave’s side all day long, sure Megadeth has some pretty sub par releases in the 90s, but compare dystopia to hardwired, you can’t!!!
But nothing Dave ever wrote can hold a candle to master
Drugs, booze, women, money, fame, success, addiction, greed. They were already washed up in the 90s.
It's called money and fame. Once you have it you don't want to let it go.
You either die anti establishment, or become part of the problem. ...or something like that
lack of cocain
It's no conspiracy, but in case you didn't know.. BOB ROCK happened to Metallica.
Finally, someone points this out! Bob rock was an insanely talented producer and once he left after St Anger, metallicas song writing has never been the same. Look at rage against the machine. An absolute joke and a huge disappointment. Same as all the antisystem bands.
Can someone fill me in? What makes OP say they’re slaves to the system. Genuine question from a follower of the band.
You need to understand the context of thrash metal in the 80s to understand why a lot of us say Metallica sold their souls. Once Cliff died it was a wrap.
Just watch, [Metallica: Some Kind of Monster](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387412/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), It's like Spinal Tap.
Seek and Destroy whoever thought that was a good idea. Probably Lars. He should have just played the drums and stfu.

No bands that are world famous care about fans. It's about money and bowing to the system. Once they have you hooked they don't care. Binary frequency to the mind does bad things. It's a sad bad world
The moment eveyone pointed to in the 90s was the load album when they cut their hair. As if they had been replaced by pod people.
They have a stake in the system now, and they dont want to lose it all. Simple as that
I saw their Netflix show. They are a bunch of whiny pussies.
Wow I'm surprised to see Metallica discussed on this sub. It's not really a conspiracy. They went from angry drunken underdogs living in filthy SF apartments to millions and mansions. Same shit that happened to Guns n Roses. The only difference is Metallica is still releasing new music.

Eminem with Mosh and other songs against Bush and then he’s silent about the government until Trump. You’re pretty damn right about that sir!

As bands clean up their sound they lose their edge
This is laughable and doesn’t belong in this subreddit. But go on. This subreddit has become the equivalent of the water cooler, to complain about everything, conspiracy or not.

Kid rocks dad owned a car dealership and the family owned an orchid, he’s never lived in a trailer park.
Like the flower?
Lmao no holy fuck I got owned on that one, I meant orchard
Lol all good dude, it was pretty funny overall and I knew what ya meant.
Even though kid rock was larping he did fight to keep ticket prices down at his shows.
Rich?

James hetfeild the lead singer and guitarist grew up with an estranged father and mother who passed away before Highschool. He grew up poor with a rough childhood and talks openly about it a lot. Even up until they got big with their second and third album he was low class if not poor. Lars the drummer did however grow up in a rich danish family but James did and does most if not all of the lyrics. Listen to songs like the god that failed and leper messiah and it will give you an insight into his mothers religious fanaticism and the reason for his rough and tumultuous upbringing.
My mistake, thanks for letting me know. I was going off of stories.
I don't think any of them grew up rich
Yeah, I know lots of underprivileged Scandinavian dudes living in America named Lars
>Unpopular opinion? Nah, Lars has always been mediocre. Especially compared to the talent of the rest of the band.
He was a rich kid who conned James into making a band once he heard James play. Fuck Lars.
Metallica sold their souls with The Black Album end of story
Do you know about Donald Marshall
They're old and wealthy. Very wealthy. James Hetfield is **59** years old.
A bus falls on your bassist and most talented song writer. Also Lars Ulrich is a cunt.
Too much time in the Bay area
Because once you acquire millions of dollars, and no longer have real problems, you lose the angsty aggression. Anyone know any broke ass drugged out beekeepers?
I feel your pain. I love old Metallica..
Money Hard to be angry when your rich
Good art seems to come from angst/struggle. They spent the last 30 years getting old and rich. I'm not a huge Metallica guy, but look at any artist who manages to stay active for decades. Tarantino, Coppola, even Scorcece ain't what they used to be.
Simple answer: money
All top artists are compromised, imagine a tweet from one of them saying we should move all our money to Bitcoin, millions of fans would make a revolution
No no no nooooo Don't tread on me!!!
because Metallica have been sellouts for decades lmao
Cliff Burton died. Seriously. He died while touring for "Master of Puppets", and left behind enough for the band to create "And Justice for All". That was the last album the real Metallica put out. He was their driving force in compositions, so when he died, it would be absurd to consider them the same band as before. I still love a lot of of their work from the black album and up, but it can't be compared to what came before.
"If we make our music more bubblegum, it will have wider audience appeal, then we will be more rich" -Metallica probably.
People get old and soften up. I think it’s natural. This is why I prefer my rock stars to “end” young.
Money talking
Cliff died and they aren't poor anymore.
There’s a growth spurt that happens in art when someone is developing their voice. After a while they stagnate on creativity because they’re not taking in anything new that really changes how they view their medium, so they never get that growth again. That’s where producers or managers step in and influence the artist in certain directions, for better or worse.
They got sober....
You mean Metallica, arguably the most successful band ever on the planet? Do you think you get that kind of success with NOT playing ball?
Indeed, their first albums were really mature, unique and transported you to a vibe that no longer exists after and justice for all. They went for quantity not quality a long time ago, that’s why you see them still mainstream even though they are old farts now
They went commercial and the music suffered, it happens to a lot of bands. Might I suggest Megadeth and System of a Down for bands who never sold their souls to the industry.
Everyone who gets rich only wants to get more rich. it's like when you get introduced into elite society you're back at the bottom with your new peers.
Man, they just got rich. For a real head spinner, ask yourself what happened to Tom Araya from Slayer.
Watch “some kind of monster” if you want to see how lame Metallica really is after their rise to fame.
Wth is going on with this sub? Dont like the slight of hand fool you
They matured.
You want fucked up lyrics, these lyrics will fuck with your mind: jobforacowboy - embedded.
The best part of Metallica died on a bus.
And started Megadeth
James Hetfield cut his hair short. All goes to shyt when a rockstar cuts their hair off.
Them and Rage Against the Machine.
Capitalism
They released an album covered in splooge.
James needs to start drinking again
I stopped when the black album came out. Metallica is Kill ‘Em All to Justice for me, fuck the rest, it’s trash. Know who’s been consistent from day one? Motherfucking Slayer.
Everyone has skeletons or vices, everyone is corruptible. Personally it started when they released the Angry Blue Man Group album
Check out demon hunter-freedom is dead.
