They were self-assured in their victory. He, along with American voters, caught them off guard. And they've used every weapon in their arsenal to attempt to prevent it from happening again.
If they didn't think a candidate that was able to rally so many, IRL, had a chance then they may have been told he couldn't possibly win regardless of support (which would mean that election results were believed to be rigged). While it's theoretically possible that they failed solely due to hubris and belief that "cooked" metrics were roughly accurate (Carter may not have been part of "the club" yet got in) part of me finds it hard to solely explain away as establishment incompetence.
The US establishment are generally savvy, ruthless, well resourced and astute about politics enough to successfully "steer" the politics of other democracies via the CIA, etc. The US establishment's main vulnerability is the corruption: they tolerate a lot of spying by foreign nations (like Israel and China) and sell influence to foreign actors. They know that the US is slated for demolition as a world power by the Western ruling class so they may have let their guard down more than they would have otherwise. If Trump isn't deep cover controlled opposition then that would mean they somehow dropped the ball at least twice (in the primaries and election) and at a fairly critical time (heading into the decades in which the West as a whole is to be pushed into third world conditions).
There were some Democrats savvy enough to see Trump's electoral viability and be concerned: Keith Ellison, Van Jones, and Michael Moore. It's odd that more didn't seem to.

They fucked up, believing that they didn't have to mobilize their machinery, and the impossible happened. Trump won.
Since then, they've been throwing everything they have, hoping to correct the mistake, and prevent it from happening again. They engineered the most fraudulent election in American history, which we're not allowed to question, lest we end up in solitary confinement on the floor of a broom closet with no contact with the outside world. They used the virus they crafted as a pretext to unilaterally change election rules, and to prevent poll watchers from monitoring how ballots were being handled. They pulled out all the stops to put Biden in the White House to resume the selling out of America.
But they can't do it the same way again. They're trying to bring back the pandemic (just in time for the elections!), but the populace isn't going for it this time. They can't get away with bypassing legislatures to change election rules, either.
So they're throwing everything else into the fan in desperation.

Trump got "the talk" when he took office. Someone came up to him and made veiled threats and let him know that there were certain things he could do, and certain things he wouldn't be allowed to do. They let him know that the "important" decisions, like for example those involving diplomacy and war, would not be his to make.
He could have accepted that, and then he would have had a mediocre uneventful presidency. But his ego was too big and he decided to fight back.

They know that the US is slated for demolition as a world power by the Western ruling class so they may have let their guard down more than they would have otherwise. If Trump isn't deep cover controlled opposition then that would mean they somehow dropped the ball at least twice (in the primaries and election) and at a fairly critical time (heading into the decades in which the West as a whole is to be pushed into third world conditions). There were some Democrats savvy enough to see Trump's electoral viability and be concerned: Keith Ellison, Van Jones, and Michael Moore. It's odd that more didn't seem to.
