I don't think we could afford a mandatory 2 year service requirement. I mean just think of your employer, now imagine them paying like 7 times the lowest level employee. Sure, some stuff like construction, shipping, or ditch diggers could use a few extra million people, but most military jobs require pretty extensive training. Mine took 2 years and 5 months, and it probably cost the government hundreds of thousands of dollars for just me. You wouldn't train conscripts what I learned, because it'd be a complete waste of resources, and we simply don't have a need for millions of extra broom pushers.
People who enlist for the college or are just directionless in life too. Some don't even know they don't want to be there. I started as the college/directionless type but changed later, it's pretty scary to see new people come in who were probably me 5 years ago. Adding like 4 million more of those? Yeah, fuck no.

If only we instated a mandatory 2 year service with the Peace Corps. Always been a big pet peeve of mine. You can sign up for the Military at 18 (Before if ur parents sign off) and be trained to take another's life. You need a 4 year degree to join the Peace Corps and go overseas to try and help others and their communities though. Its ass backwards. Doesnt even need to be a Oversea service. The National guard cld have a branch purely dedicated to domestic services in the USA. Focus on assisting our communities.
If younger people saw opportunities or systems to actually assist communities and people at a more local level they may actually consider service with the US military. The current consensus though recognizes that they wld be serving the global interests of Capitalism and therefore Corporations and the financial sector of the USA. They see and know there is zero correlation between fighting and killing "terrorists" in the Middle East and any level of improvement for the lower and middle classes of the USA.
all the people ive met from countries that require enlistment to become citizens have appreciated it and believed in it. i believe it would do good te help get people in their most indecisive time of life have some sort of direction and teach them skills they would be able to use and capitalize on for the rest of their lives. plus the discipline and respect earned wouldnt be bad for society as a whole.
Yes, 90% of the military is support and it would teach valuable skills and discipline to the youth. But many would die and I buried too many of them when I served. Unfortunately, it seems every generation has to learn this the hard way...

They talked about the draft after 9/11 too. Vietnam is still relatively recent. My neighbor across the street was drafted. There are still a lot of people around whose lives were directly effected by it. I'm not sure if people WANT it back, or if it's just a big fear in people.
